- [15:03] Oskar Linden: anyways here is the agenda: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Server_Beta_User_Group
- [15:03] Ima Mechanique: hope the hookahs weren't to pricey, and you wore protection ;-)
- [15:03] Oskar Linden: nice one Ima
- [15:03] Coyot Linden: hahah
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: since Coyot is here and is a busy man I'll let him go first
- [15:04] Coyot Linden: nah
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: nah?
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: ok
- [15:04] Coyot Linden: we moved our other meeting
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: oh ok
- [15:04] Coyot Linden: so I could be here
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: well to the regularly shceudled agenda
- [15:04] Coyot Linden: that's how important these folks are
- [15:04] Sahkolihaa Contepomi: :D
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: we pushed the code on BlueSteel and LeTigre to main channel this week
- [15:04] Larre Leborski: :-)
- [15:04] MartinRJ Fayray: I said "Happy Birthday" in the group but you weren't there :(
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: those were the fixes here: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Server/12#12.02.24.249991
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: SVC-7631
- [15:05] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7631] New rate throttle on llGiveInventory https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7631
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: SVC-7660
- [15:05] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7660] http_request() fails to trigger on RC Magnum 12.01.27.248571 & Second Life Server 12.02.24.250006 https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7660
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: and a few other misc bugs and crashers
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: it went fine
- [15:05] Coyot Linden: yep
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: we did have to shuffle the RC rolls
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: we did those this morning instead
- [15:06] Oskar Linden: BlueSteel and LeTigre have new code
- [15:06] Oskar Linden: some inventory api changes
- [15:06] Oskar Linden: Improvements were made to the way inventory transactions are handled in order to improve scalability and reliability of inventory transfers.
- [15:06] Oskar Linden: no external jiras fixed
- [15:06] Oskar Linden: some old unused code removed
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: then there was Magnum...
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: poor Magnum
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: the magnum code has been around a while now
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: it's the threaded region crossing prep code
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: it's a complicated set of code
- [15:07] Kallista Destiny: Purning dead code is a mitzvahs (good deed)
- [15:07] Coyot Linden: lots of race conditions
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: and it didn't like the merge with the trunk code
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: regions have been crashing heavily all day
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: and that's real bad
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: so we have to rollback
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: we're doing that in 2 hours
- [15:08] Coyot Linden: tonight
- [15:08] Coyot Linden: yep
- [15:08] Homeless: ouch
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: our apologies for any inconvience
- [15:08] Coyot Linden: magnum -> trunk
- [15:08] Theresa Tennyson: Glad I was away from SL home all day then...
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: inconvenience
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: on a good note though
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: we've been taking this week to do some cleanup
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: Don has been working on a project for a while to make things easier for region crossings
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: Coyot can you tell us about it
- [15:09] Coyot Linden: well, actually, there is a whole team of us
- [15:09] Larre Leborski: Indeed.. me was away from Magnum yesterday as well.. been in LeTigre tho.
- [15:09] Coyot Linden: don, susan, dynamike, steven and myself
- [15:09] Coyot Linden: so, here's the basic idea
- [15:09] Coyot Linden: as you can probably guess, some regions use more memory than others
- [15:10] Coyot Linden: we also have two kinds of machines, some with more memory
- [15:10] Coyot Linden: prior to this week, there was no programmatic
- [15:10] Coyot Linden: assignment of higher mem usage to higher mem machines
- [15:10] Coyot Linden: by Friday, this will be "rebalanced"
- [15:11] Coyot Linden: we are already 95% of the way through the grid
- [15:11] Moundsa Mayo: Sweet!
- [15:11] Larre Leborski: Indeed :-)
- [15:11] Coyot Linden: the benefits, particularly for high mem users on low mem machines has already been pretty dramatic
- [15:11] Coyot Linden: lower overall mem usage
- [15:11] Coyot Linden: faster region crossings
- [15:11] Coyot Linden: lower lag
- [15:12] Coyot Linden: I hope to have numbers by next Beta OH
- [15:12] Coyot Linden: <EOF>
- [15:12] Oskar Linden: it also took into account neighboring regions and placed them closer in the colos right?
- [15:12] Coyot Linden: that's right
- [15:12] Coyot Linden: thank you for reminding me
- [15:12] Moundsa Mayo: Excellent!!
- [15:12] Oskar Linden: all around an awesome setup
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: the whole team has worked hard on this for a while
- [15:13] Coyot Linden: that also greatly improves region crossings
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: this didn't require simulator code changes, just organization of existing resources
- [15:13] Coyot Linden: yeah, we basically threw the grid in the air and made it come down in different places. :P
- [15:13] Coyot Linden: no code chanes
- [15:13] Coyot Linden: changes
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: we rebalanced the empty regions first
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: so no one knew it was going on
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: we tried to be low impact
- [15:14] Coyot Linden: indeed
- [15:14] Coyot Linden: that got us past 80% of the grid
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: hopefully we'll have it finished tomorrow morning
- [15:14] Coyot Linden: by doing parts at different times
- [15:14] Coyot Linden: so that different regions were empty
- [15:15] Theresa Tennyson: So bigger regions are on better machines now, basically?
- [15:15] Coyot Linden: basically, yes
- [15:15] Homeless: Empty as in no av's?
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: if by bigger you mean more intensive
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: yes
- [15:15] Theresa Tennyson: Yep.
- [15:15] Coyot Linden: as in "no agents"
- [15:15] Draconis Neurocam: were the regions restarted to do this?
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: no agent presents ;-)
- [15:15] Coyot Linden: draconis: yes
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: there was a lot of shuffling
- [15:15] Coyot Linden: you can't move a region between machines without restarting it
- [15:16] Moundsa Mayo: I noticed a few weeks ago we suddenly had significntly more Spare Time in Huckleberry. Would this have been an indicator?
- [15:16] Ima Mechanique: yeah, moving regions live would be like moving live sharks byhand
- [15:16] Coyot Linden: no, we weren't doing this that long ago, Moundsa
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: no moundsa
- [15:16] Coyot Linden: Ima: heh
- [15:16] Coyot Linden: more like eels
- [15:16] MartinRJ Fayray: 80% of the grid are empty regions?
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: thankfully we hav escripts to do it Ima
- [15:16] Moundsa Mayo: And i didn't get rid of any of my script glut. Hmmm.
- [15:17] Oskar Linden: not empty
- [15:17] Oskar Linden: but no agents at that time
- [15:17] Theresa Tennyson: Did you take into account average traffic as well as stuff on the ground?
- [15:17] Coyot Linden: right, Oskar
- [15:17] MartinRJ Fayray: ah
- [15:17] Oskar Linden: Theresa we took into account an overall gestalt of machine usage
- [15:17] Oskar Linden: over multiple weeks
- [15:17] Theresa Tennyson: Yay!
- [15:17] Oskar Linden: to determine which regions were more memory intensive
- [15:17] Coyot Linden: we used as our primary metric, the amount of memory used by the region over the last month
- [15:17] Coyot Linden: (as an average)
- [15:18] arton Rotaru: will this permanently rebalanced when things change on regions?
- [15:18] Oskar Linden: hopefully we will see some awesome results over the weekend
- [15:18] Coyot Linden: well, there will always be drift
- [15:18] Coyot Linden: let's say someone asks to have their region put on an RC
- [15:18] Oskar Linden: I believe we will monitor it and rebalance as needed arton
- [15:19] Coyot Linden: that might move things a bit
- [15:19] Coyot Linden: and over time...
- [15:19] arton Rotaru: okies
- [15:19] Coyot Linden: but yes, we are monitoring drift over this week and next
- [15:20] Oskar Linden: this is the type of project that makes me excited
- [15:20] Draconis Neurocam: are you monitering these by hand or is the system automated?
- [15:20] Oskar Linden: hoping to offer performance increases without code changes
- [15:20] Coyot Linden: it'sa script
- [15:20] Oskar Linden: automagically
- [15:21] Coyot Linden: I'm particularly proud of the ASM sections of the code.
- [15:21] Coyot Linden: :P
- [15:21] Draconis Neurocam: hahah
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: ASM?
- [15:21] Draconis Neurocam: assembly
- [15:21] Coyot Linden: right
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: Age, Sex, Mustard?
- [15:21] Coyot Linden: HAHA
- [15:22] Oskar Linden: Asynchronous Squirrel Monitoring
- [15:22] Draconis Neurocam: x86 or x86-64?
- [15:22] Oskar Linden: anyway. any questions?
- [15:22] Ima Mechanique: Aged Sado-Masochism
- [15:22] Coyot Linden: You see ASM hooks in OS code when it reaches out to the devices
- [15:22] Coyot Linden: SPARC!!!
- [15:22] Draconis Neurocam: pffff
- [15:22] Oskar Linden: hah
- [15:22] Theresa Tennyson: Ooo, ASM hooks. Ima was right...
- [15:22] Coyot Linden: RISC for evah!
- [15:23] Draconis Neurocam: totally
- [15:23] Coyot LindenCoyot Linden used to work for Sun...
- [15:23] Draconis Neurocam: hey arm is getting big
- [15:23] Oskar Linden: hiring Coyot was a RISC
- [15:23] Draconis Neurocam: cisc will fall eventually
- [15:23] Ima Mechanique: I gotta couple Sparcs lying around here ;-)
- [15:23] Coyot Linden: haha
- [15:24] Oskar Linden: those poor things
- [15:24] Larre Leborski: Indeed.. I have a question about this.. is this all new hardware that is hosting SL now?
- [15:24] Oskar Linden: no
- [15:24] Oskar Linden: same hardware
- [15:24] Coyot Linden: yep
- [15:24] Kallista Destiny: BAL Port it to the I370 mailframe
- [15:24] Oskar Linden: but better region balancing on the hardware
- [15:24] Larre Leborski: Indeed.. ok.
- [15:24] Oskar Linden: all of our machines are not identical
- [15:25] Larre Leborski: :-)
- [15:25] Coyot Linden: but there are only two kinds, really, and the ONLY real difference is the memory
- [15:25] Homeless: hmmm if anyone is using viewer 3, check your CPU usage, is it way up?
- [15:25] Kallista Destiny: all of you base belong us
- [15:26] Kallista Destiny: Firestone 4.0.1 Pre-Beta cpu normal
- [15:26] Draconis Neurocam: cpu usage is normal here on v3
- [15:26] arton Rotaru: 25% CPU on Second Life 3.3.1 (250315)
- [15:26] Coyot Linden: my cpu is normal
- [15:26] Theresa Tennyson: Beta 3.3 is just loafing along
- [15:26] Coyot Linden: on SL 3.2.8
- [15:27] Draconis Neurocam: 3.3.1 (250772) here
- [15:27] Homeless: hmmm I log in and mine is just fine for about 15 minutes... then it shoots up 50%... even when minimized my v3 uses 66%
- [15:27] Oskar Linden: hmm
- [15:27] Theresa Tennyson: There's a JIRA on that.
- [15:27] Oskar Linden: I'm not surprised
- [15:27] Moundsa Mayo: V3.2.8 here, scooting right along, Homeless
- [15:27] Homeless: I commented on that jira
- [15:27] Sahkolihaa Contepomi: If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, disable 'threaded optimisation' in the NVIDIA control panel.
- [15:28] Homeless: will have to try that
- [15:28] Oskar Linden: thanks for the update coyot
- [15:28] Coyot Linden: yw
- [15:28] Coyot Linden: hope to have more good news
- [15:28] Coyot Linden: next week
- [15:28] Oskar Linden: yeah I'll be excited to see some graphs
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: in other news SImon says he fixed SVC-7629
- [15:29] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7629] Map tile generator not working https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7629
- [15:29] Coyot Linden: oskar: http://graphjam.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/funny-graphs-apathy-charted1.jpg
- [15:29] Draconis Neurocam: huzzah for that
- [15:29] Draconis Neurocam: seriously
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: so open your map windown and scroll out
- [15:29] Draconis Neurocam: it works
- [15:30] Draconis Neurocam: i hope to not get packet loss from the map anymore because of it, i wish i knew how it was broke though
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: not sure about the release path to AGNI yet
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: but it is fixed here
- [15:30] Coyot Linden: That way it won't have little JIRAs
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: as it looks today the code on BlueSteel/LeTigre will get promoted next week
- [15:31] MartinRJ Fayray: my map window is broken, it says the sim next to this one is Lusk =)
- [15:31] MartinRJ Fayray: j/k
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: barring any unforseen issues
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: so if you are on Bs or Lt this weekend and notice massive inventory related oddities be sur eto file a jira and let me know
- [15:32] Theresa Tennyson: Is Magnum going to last week's Magnum or the main server release after the rollback.
- [15:32] Coyot Linden: main server
- [15:32] Oskar Linden: trunk
- [15:32] Oskar Linden: so the same as main server channel
- [15:32] Theresa TennysonTheresa Tennyson isn't special anymore, for a week at least.
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: you're still special!
- [15:33] Theresa Tennyson: Thank you!
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: but if you go onto the forums and talk about how many bugs Magnum has I will laugh at you
- [15:33] arton Rotaru: :p
- [15:34] Larre Leborski: :-)
- [15:34] Homeless: "more bugs than a roach motel"?
- [15:34] Oskar Linden: that is the funniest situation that I ever get a chance to witness. 2 codebases named differently and people arguing that one is dramatically worse than the other
- [15:34] Theresa Tennyson: SOME of us try to know SOMETHING about what we're talking about. That's why I'm here.
- [15:35] arton Rotaru: well, there was a bug with childprim positions, which was region depending, on the same code^^
- [15:35] arton Rotaru: when mesh code was released, it hit the main grid
- [15:36] arton Rotaru: I told Dan Linden about it, and he said impossible^^
- [15:36] arton Rotaru: but it reproduced all the time
- [15:37] Oskar Linden: it is just the idea that two identical codebases that only differe by name would give wildly different impressions based on personal experience
- [15:37] Oskar Linden: it's a placebo thing
- [15:37] Coyot Linden: hence the placebo effect
- [15:37] Coyot Linden: heh
- [15:37] Coyot Linden: jinx
- [15:37] Kallista Destiny: But there are also other things thay afect stuff...
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: I read a fascinating article about the placebo effect where even when people were told "this is a placebo. it is just sugar pills. it will heal you" they still got better
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: hah
- [15:38] Homeless: I suppose the (stable) in one name and the (unstable) in the second name could have something to do with it.
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: that's true Kallista
- [15:38] Kallista Destiny: viewers, network traffice etc
- [15:38] Kallista Destiny: How you hold your mouth
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: agape
- [15:38] Kallista Destiny: Remember it' alll magic at some level
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: that it is
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: just electricity
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: zipping around
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: in very precise patterns
- [15:39] Draconis Neurocam: is there a ParcelMediaURLFilterList server cap out of curiousity?
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: no idea
- [15:39] Kallista Destiny: But electricity is magic
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: it is
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: like magnets
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: how the F do they work?
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: :-p
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: anyway
- [15:39] Draconis Neurocam: miracles up in this
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: lol
- [15:40] Ima Mechanique: magnets have invisible arms that want to hug other magnets of opposite gender
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: aww
- [15:40] Ima Mechanique: basically they're horny little b'stards
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: I don't have anything else in the agenda to talk about
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: so we could either adjourn or chat about whatever
- [15:40] Ima Mechanique: why is scr-6 on "any other stuff"?
- [15:40] Flame of Jira: [#SCR-6] llGetSubString can produce results that crash Mono scripts https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SCR-6
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: ?
- [15:41] TankMaster FinesmithTankMaster Finesmith hates good weather... means there is no excuse not to do yard work
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: go outside tank
- [15:41] Coyot Linden: I think I will take this opportunity to take my leave, good folks.
- [15:41] TankMaster Finesmith: i was outside
- [15:41] Coyot Linden: have a great weekened
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: cya coyot!
- [15:41] Coyot Linden: cya
- [15:41] TankMaster Finesmith: tc cypte
- [15:41] Ima Mechanique: bye Coyot
- [15:41] Draconis Neurocam: take care coyot
- [15:41] Moundsa Mayo: Coyot, thank you for your time!
- [15:41] Coyot Linden: yw, you too!
- [15:42] Ima Mechanique: and if your ears start burning when you're gone, it's just yopur butt has finished burning
- [15:42] Theresa Tennyson: I DON'T want to start the whole debate here but I'm curious - how are the old "last names" encoded? Is "T-E-N-N-Y-S-O-N" anywhere in my "identity" or is it a number that gets looked up?
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: it's a number
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: a row in a database
- [15:42] Theresa TennysonTheresa Tennyson licks a finger and writes a "1" in the air.
- [15:43] Moundsa Mayo: "You are not a name, you are a NUMBER!!"
- [15:43] Oskar Linden: more likely 8565
- [15:43] Theresa Tennyson: Do you know off the top of your head how many last names are possible with that system?
- [15:43] Oskar Linden: as many as we want
- [15:43] Kallista Destiny: Who is number 1?
- [15:43] Draconis Neurocam: probably locked to some data value maximum
- [15:43] Ima Mechanique: lots, I have several thousand in my db and it is a fraction of what's in use
- [15:44] Kallista Destiny: 64K if is'ts a Ushort
- [15:44] Theresa Tennyson: But we can't come up with our own, I take it...
- [15:44] Kallista Destiny: 4Guf if it's an Ulong
- [15:44] Draconis Neurocam: im going to just throw it out there that Linden is number 1
- [15:44] Oskar Linden: 1 is Linden :-)
- [15:44] Draconis Neurocam: yeah
- [15:44] TankMaster Finesmith: lol
- [15:44] Oskar Linden: actually I think Linden is like 4
- [15:44] Ima Mechanique: and Tester?
- [15:44] Draconis Neurocam: really
- [15:44] Draconis Neurocam: cause doug is the oldest avatar i could find
- [15:44] Oskar Linden: it's been a while since I poked the db
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: there is an older one
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: what is her name
- [15:45] TankMaster Finesmith: ruth
- [15:45] TankMaster Finesmith: :D
- [15:45] Ima Mechanique: poking Db's is a dangerous art, sometimes they poke back
- [15:45] arton Rotaru: lol
- [15:45] Theresa Tennyson: Wasn't "Steller Sunshine" the first official resident?
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: lemme find it
- [15:45] Kallista Destiny: Yeah
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: yes
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: there
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: Steller
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: on my friends list I'll have you know
- [15:45] TankMaster Finesmith: lol
- [15:45] Moundsa Mayo: Made the Beanstalk
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: I know her personally
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: really awesome
- [15:45] Theresa Tennyson: Kewl!
- [15:45] Draconis Neurocam: 3dacc611-17d1-20a9-986f-721528a4857e ruth doesnt have one of the special keys though
- [15:46] Draconis Neurocam: a2e76fcd-9360-4f6d-a924-000000000001 theres dougs
- [15:46] Oskar Linden: heh
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: ok so yeah 1 is Linden
- [15:47] Homeless: What number is "Resident"?
- [15:47] TankMaster Finesmith: 42
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: 4 is Apple
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: 42 is Powers
- [15:47] TankMaster Finesmith: lol
- [15:47] Draconis Neurocam: what is 2?

- [15:51] TankMaster FinesmithTankMaster Finesmith wonders what # is emerald

- [15:51] Ima Mechanique: on the agenda SCR-6 is mentioned under "Any Other Stuff". is that just decoration?
- [15:51] Oskar Linden: that might be old
- [15:51] Oskar Linden: and I forgot to remove it
- [15:51] Oskar Linden: I think we talked about it last week
- [15:51] Ima Mechanique: ahh, wasn't here last week
- [15:52] Larre Leborski: hmmm...
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: I don't remember
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: ok. 8 minutes left
- [15:53] Theresa Tennyson: Another random thought I had - I know you can keep text chat, sounds, etc. from going OUT of a parcel. Is it theoretically possible to keep them from coming INTO a parcel?
- [15:53] Oskar Linden: I might shut the meeting down a tad early
- [15:53] TankMaster Finesmith: no
- [15:53] Oskar Linden: hmm
- [15:54] TankMaster Finesmith: enjoy the nice weather
- [15:54] TankMaster Finesmith: np*
- [15:54] Oskar Linden: isn't there that one parcel setting that lets you do that now?
- [15:54] Larre Leborski: :-)
- [15:54] Oskar Linden: or is that only one way
- [15:54] Theresa Tennyson: That keeps it from going OUT. If you could keep stuff from coming IN that would really frustrate griefers.
- [15:54] Oskar Linden: gestures and objects sounds are stuck inside the parcel
- [15:54] TankMaster Finesmith: if you enable privacy on the parcle, it blocks both ways
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: like a total wall
- [15:55] Theresa Tennyson: Kewl...
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: hmm
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: not sure that will happen anytime soon
- [15:55] Theresa Tennyson: Just a thought.
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: yeah
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: alright guys. I'll give you 5 minutes back in your day!
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: 4 minutes now

- [15:56] Ima Mechanique: ooooh, extra sleeping time
- [15:56] Theresa Tennyson: Thank you!
- [15:56] Flip Idlemind: Oh, something I wanna bring up here at the last minute. There's a feature called "Avatar Sounds", which restricts who can play sounds on a parcel. Would it be possible to do the same thing but with Voice?
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: let me know of bluesteel or letigre have inv issues over the weekend k?
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: possibly
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: I don't think anyone is working on that Flip
- [15:57] TankMaster Finesmith: its SL, it alwyas has inventory problems :P
- [15:57] Flip Idlemind: I'm not even sure if it's possible to restrict voice usage in that way, making it so people can hear but nto speak
- [15:57] Ima Mechanique: will do, I'm on LT
