  • [2010/01/19 20:09] Colossus Linden: Search
  • [2010/01/19 20:09] Colossus Linden: 2. Search
  • [2010/01/19 20:09] Colossus Linden: I'd now like to introduce Liana Linden, our Business Lead on Search and Advertising at Linden Lab
  • [2010/01/19 20:09] Lydi Lockhart: Hello Liana!
  • [2010/01/19 20:09] Colossus Linden: passes baton to Liana
  • [2010/01/19 20:09] Argus Collingwood: welcome
  • [2010/01/19 20:10] Liana Linden: Hello!
  • [2010/01/19 20:10] Pamela Galli: hello
  • [2010/01/19 20:10] Liana Linden: Let me start with a little intro and context.
  • [2010/01/19 20:10] Liana Linden: I‚m Liana Linden. I‚ve been with Linden Lab for 4 years, and I‚ve been a Second Life Resident since 2005. I‚ve worn several ‚hats‚ at Linden, refocusing my role as the company and platform evolve. For the last year, I‚ve been the Product Manager and Business Lead for Search and Advertising.
  • [2010/01/19 20:10] Liana Linden: In 2009, the focus of the Search Team has been mainly on inworld Search‚which is what I‚ll talk about today--but XstreetSL will be increasingly on my radar.
  • [2010/01/19 20:11] Liana Linden: So, what has that year of effort gotten you, the Residents? Well, much of the work has been behind the scenes, preparing for customer-facing improvements in 2010.
  • [2010/01/19 20:11] Connected undefined:
  • [2010/01/19 20:11] Liana Linden: In 2009, we built a team around Search. Previously, we‚d never had a focused engineering and product team for Search, with the obvious results‚no traction on large-scale improvements, let alone regular bug fixing. There were simply too many competing priorities clamoring for those resources. That has changed.
  • [2010/01/19 20:12] Pink Linden: (hi lazlo)
  • [2010/01/19 20:12] Liana Linden: We‚ve brought in team members from Yahoo! who bring deep domain expertise in search and technology from Google. We also have advisors on staff who come from eBay and Amazon and contribute their experience in merchandizing and search tools.
  • [2010/01/19 20:13] Liana Linden: The other, very important thing we did in 2009 was to work our way out of some technical dead-ends in Search. We are in the process of moving to a much more agile, web-services based framework that will allow us to improve and maintain Search on a much faster release cycle. You will have seen the effects of some of that backend work show up on search.secondlife.com last fall, and we‚ll be introducing it in the Viewer soon.
  • [2010/01/19 20:13] Liana Linden: Looking ahead... My preference is to under promise and over deliver. But I‚d like to give you a sense of our direction for 2010.
  • [2010/01/19 20:13] Liana Linden: E.g.
  • [2010/01/19 20:14] Liana Linden: * Improve inworld Search relevance and counteract gaming techniques
  • [2010/01/19 20:14] Liana Linden: * Simplify inworld Search user interface (UI)
  • [2010/01/19 20:14] Liana Linden: * Improve the Advertising options for merchants (Classifieds, Xstreet, etc.)
  • [2010/01/19 20:14] Liana Linden: That's a lot of text to absorb. :-)
  • [2010/01/19 20:16] Liana Linden: To summarize, I'd say that as we work on the releases ahead, our focus will be on stimulating commerce and helping to make Second Life more appealing and stickier for new and old residents alike.
  • [2010/01/19 20:17] Lydi Lockhart: stickier?
  • [2010/01/19 20:17] Argus Collingwood: stick around
  • [2010/01/19 20:17] Liana Linden: I'd like to open the floor to questions.
  • [2010/01/19 20:17] Lydi Lockhart: ah
  • [2010/01/19 20:17] Pamela Galli: Simplify how?
  • [2010/01/19 20:17] Talisien Llewellyn: When you mention "counteract gaming techniques" Could you please clarify what that will mean? Will search be moving away from traffic based results?
  • [2010/01/19 20:17] Argus Collingwood: will the graphic look of search change?
  • [2010/01/19 20:18] Liana Linden: Lydi: As much as I try to avoid jargon, sometimes I fall prey. What Argus said, stickier as in people stay on the platform longer and do more.
  • [2010/01/19 20:18] Liana Linden: Pamela, Argus: We are working on a redesign of the user interface of Search.
  • [2010/01/19 20:19] Argus Collingwood: great
  • [2010/01/19 20:19] Pamela Galli: Fewer tabs?
  • [2010/01/19 20:19] Alesandra Markova: Traffic for a non-enterntainment bussiness is not a fair assesment of what a store has to offer, how do you plan to seggregate entertainment venues, which traditionally have higher traffic, and a store where someone might hangout for 30 mins.
  • [2010/01/19 20:20] Lydi Lockhart: how about having a way to denote if you are searching for a "store/shop" or a "club/entertainment area"
  • [2010/01/19 20:21] Liana Linden: Talisien: Traffic is a great metric for landowners, but it isn't a great measure of search relevance. We're looking to strike the right balance.
  • [2010/01/19 20:21] Liana Linden: There are several blog posts on that already. I'll dig them up in a minute.
  • [2010/01/19 20:22] Pamela Galli: Are there going to be different types of advertising opportunties?
  • [2010/01/19 20:23] Liana Linden: Alesandra: I think a lot of that segregation must be left in the hands of the searcher, who will filter for Events or Places.
  • [2010/01/19 20:24] Alesandra Markova: Nods, just seems that traffic and postion in search is not a good measure for a store owner over a high end entertainment venue.
  • [2010/01/19 20:24] Argus Collingwood: a shopping tab seems like a possibility
  • [2010/01/19 20:24] Liana Linden: Lydi: We already have Places and Event categories that people can filter on. Maybe I misunderstand your question? Could you clarify?
  • [2010/01/19 20:25] Argus Collingwood: all search is what most use I feel
  • [2010/01/19 20:25] Lydi Lockhart: Liana, yes - sometimes I want to search for a store to buy something, other times I want to search for a club or activies area...
  • [2010/01/19 20:25] Liana Linden: Pamela: Creating new advertising opportunities is absolutely something we are working on.
  • [2010/01/19 20:26] Pamela Galli: no hints?
  • [2010/01/19 20:26] Toysoldier Thor: if u are a merchant of a store that is in a mall or land u r renting and u are not the property owner.... search sucks for anyone trying to find content that u make. Xstreet is the primary Search engine for inworld content - until most of the freebies are wiped out. how will search inworld provide better search fro CONTENT of items being sold inworld
  • [2010/01/19 20:26] Pamela Galli:  :-)
  • [2010/01/19 20:26] Lydi Lockhart: not an event, but just a place to hang out with like minded people
  • [2010/01/19 20:26] Liana Linden: Pamela: Not yet. Stay tuned. :-)
  • [2010/01/19 20:26] Talisien Llewellyn: Would it be possible to have different categories for places like the events tab has for events? WHile I have no doubt that it will be gamed, it does seem like a way to lessen the confusion when searching for a specific type of place
  • [2010/01/19 20:28] Liana Linden: This is interesting. So, I'm gathering from the chat that few of you know about or use the subcategories in Places, like Shopping or Hang out. Is that the case?
  • [2010/01/19 20:28] Alesandra Markova: I have never i just use the base tabs...
  • [2010/01/19 20:28] Toysoldier Thor: i use people search and ALL search
  • [2010/01/19 20:28] Toysoldier Thor: none of the others
  • [2010/01/19 20:28] Alesandra Markova: people, places, all
  • [2010/01/19 20:29] Lydi Lockhart: I use people and places
  • [2010/01/19 20:29] Toysoldier Thor: and there is no CONTENT search
  • [2010/01/19 20:29] Alesandra Markova: and i never use catagorys...
  • [2010/01/19 20:29] Pamela Galli: I use All and People
  • [2010/01/19 20:29] Talisien Llewellyn: I use the sub-categories when showing my land in search, however the only place I have seen those categories in search is in the events tab
  • [2010/01/19 20:29] Orage Lubitsch: hello. i remember there were changes coming to search during mid jan. is the reunion related with new features coming ? or still on choosing them?
  • [2010/01/19 20:29] Liana Linden: There are similar subcategories in Events. This is great feedback for me to know that they are not top of mind for you.
  • [2010/01/19 20:30] Lydi Lockhart: I use places to try and find fetish clubs or sims and shopping location sfor different items, I use people to find people I am trying to locate to IM
  • [2010/01/19 20:30] Liana Linden: Getting to the question of content search --
  • [2010/01/19 20:31] Cherry Blossom: Tree: Falling Blossoms ON
  • [2010/01/19 20:31] Toysoldier Thor: if there was a Content search in world for items that are taged as FOR SALE and a price higher than 0... it should be indexed by the GSA so I dont have to rely upon xstreet for residents to find my store and items inworld
  • [2010/01/19 20:32] Liana Linden: The inworld search tool is heavily used to find products to purchase, and despite its flaws, has connected buyers and sellers.
  • [2010/01/19 20:32] Argus Collingwood: if the dropdown in All had many more subsets it would be great
  • [2010/01/19 20:32] Toysoldier Thor: no it doesnt
  • [2010/01/19 20:32] Liana Linden: That said, Places search is not a solution for Product search -- something that XstreetSL does far better.
  • [2010/01/19 20:32] Toysoldier Thor: inworld search is utterly useless for content search
  • [2010/01/19 20:32] Lydi Lockhart: I agree with Toysolider there
  • [2010/01/19 20:32] Liana Linden: Toysoldier: I know a lot of people feel that way. :-)
  • [2010/01/19 20:33] Lydi Lockhart: try finding a sculpty map store
  • [2010/01/19 20:33] Liana Linden: And I also agree that it could be a heck of a lot better.
  • [2010/01/19 20:33] Talisien Llewellyn: I agree with Toy as well
  • [2010/01/19 20:34] Liana Linden: And creating a really good way to search for products inworld is very high on our goals.
  • [2010/01/19 20:34] Orage Lubitsch: for us -the inworld search- works as marvel
  • [2010/01/19 20:34] Orage Lubitsch: and it does provide the content search , we just need to put the name on object and "show in search"
  • [2010/01/19 20:34] Orage Lubitsch: but the meeting today is? :)
  • [2010/01/19 20:35] Lydi Lockhart: I would love it if I could search for low lagged stores
  • [2010/01/19 20:35] Liana Linden: Orage: Good points. We've seen many merchants do well with the existing tools using these techniques.
  • [2010/01/19 20:35] Lydi Lockhart: I hate TP'ing in somewhere to find I can't move
  • [2010/01/19 20:35] Toysoldier Thor: any success in content search is only possible if you are a Property owner where u can place keywords of the items on your LAND... but if you are a shop owner of a mall that u dont own... Good luck anyone findmy your content for sale
  • [2010/01/19 20:35] Argus Collingwood: checks map for dots before going
  • [2010/01/19 20:36] Alesandra Markova: Ive done the show in search on every item in my store but that doesnt help if they dont know the name of te item...
  • [2010/01/19 20:36] Pink Linden: Toy, the mall owners doesn't try to drive sales for you? seems like that would be a value added service landlords would use to distinguish themselves.
  • [2010/01/19 20:36] Toysoldier Thor: noo... the mall own has 100 shops....she is not going to add your itesm onto her property
  • [2010/01/19 20:37] Toysoldier Thor: its not her job
  • [2010/01/19 20:37] Toysoldier Thor: its mine
  • [2010/01/19 20:37] Lydi Lockhart: and you really don't want to be in mall that has all the same stuff as you either
  • [2010/01/19 20:37] Toysoldier Thor: and i have no tools available to me because i am ont the property owner
  • [2010/01/19 20:37] Toysoldier Thor: nope
  • [2010/01/19 20:37] Toysoldier Thor: u r right
  • [2010/01/19 20:37] Pink Linden: right Toy, that's what I'm suggesting...I find it interesitng that the mall owner has no incentive to help you guys drive sales by putting items in the land.
  • [2010/01/19 20:37] Lydi Lockhart: I have to say though, a good mall owner would update mall listings to add in your stuff, I wouldn't think it would be hard to do
  • [2010/01/19 20:38] Pink Linden: maybe I'll go start a mall. JUST KIDDING.
  • [2010/01/19 20:38] Liana Linden: Alesandra: Could you give us a specific example of how you name your items?
  • [2010/01/19 20:38] Toysoldier Thor: there needs to eb a CONTENT tab... and it idexes ALL objects for SALE with >0L sale price
  • [2010/01/19 20:38] Lydi Lockhart: Pink, start a newbie mall, for low cost itmes
  • [2010/01/19 20:39] Alesandra Markova: well i use my store "logo" example I do demonic stuff obviously...(DGD) CC Queen of the Damned Complete av
  • [2010/01/19 20:39] Toysoldier Thor: and it needs to be in place before all my listings will be forced off xstreet - because that is how many shoppers finding my niche products inworld now - from xstreet but i cant keep them on xstreet after the taxes take effect - so hurry with the CONTENT SEARCH
  • [2010/01/19 20:40] Colossus Linden: Alright folks.
  • [2010/01/19 20:40] Colossus Linden: That was a lot of great feedback
  • [2010/01/19 20:40] Talisien Llewellyn: Let me put it this way, say you have a content tab and you are looking for a specific item, the content tab could show you products and the descriptions of those products matching your search.
  • [2010/01/19 20:40] Colossus Linden: I hope you enjoyed hearing what Liana had to share
  • [2010/01/19 20:41] Colossus Linden: In 2010, we will see some search improvements
  • [2010/01/19 20:41] Colossus Linden: Thank you Liana and thanks to the audience for all of the questions and feedback.
  • [2010/01/19 20:41] Colossus Linden: Alright, moving to our final agenda item
  • [2010/01/19 20:42] Colossus Linden: # Time Permitting
  • * Review of 2009
  • * General Q&A
  • [2010/01/19 20:42] Colossus Linden: 2009 saw some big achievements and excellent growth
  • [2010/01/19 20:43] Colossus Linden: We started the year by acquiring Xstreet SL
  • [2010/01/19 20:43] Colossus Linden: We started the year by acquiring Xstreet SL
  • [2010/01/19 20:43] Colossus Linden: Additional gifting functionality was added before the Valentine's Day rush
  • [2010/01/19 20:44] Colossus Linden: We converted the Xstreet SL login to use Second Life user names and passwords which drastically improved user acquisition on Xstreet
  • [2010/01/19 20:44] Orage Lubitsch: \o/
  • [2010/01/19 20:44] Colossus Linden: We spent a large portion of the year working on back end integration with Second Life. This coming year, we're hoping to focus more on front end features which will have more obvious effects
  • [2010/01/19 20:44] Colossus Linden: We also ran a whole host of promotions throughout the year which drove shopping in-world and on Xstreet SL
  • [2010/01/19 20:44] Colossus Linden: Our various "lookbooks" got a lot of praise
  • [2010/01/19 20:45] Colossus Linden: In 2009, residents saw US$55M in gross earnings which grew 11% over 2008
  • [2010/01/19 20:45] Colossus Linden: The economy, measured as resident-to-resident transactions grew 65% over 2008 to US$567M
  • [2010/01/19 20:45] Colossus Linden: Mind you, this was while most real world economies were struggling. I consider that a great achievement.
  • [2010/01/19 20:45] Colossus Linden: Finally, on Xstreet, the gross merchandise sales volume hit L$1.6B, US$6.1M in 2009 which was 74% growth over 2008
  • [2010/01/19 20:46] Colossus Linden: Once again, for all of the details, please see T's blog post:
  • [2010/01/19 20:46] Colossus Linden: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/features/blog/2010/01/19/2009-end-of-year-second-life-economy-wrap-up-including-q4-economy-in-detail
  • [2010/01/19 20:47] Colossus Linden: We grew the economy in 2009 and we are looking forward to continuing on that path in 2010
  • [2010/01/19 20:47] Colossus Linden: And now, I'll open up to any general Q&A
  • [2010/01/19 20:48] Lydi Lockhart: What if anything is LL doing about the mass abandonment of sims? Is there any truth that LL will lower tier costs in an attempt to get more sim owners to keep their sims?
  • [2010/01/19 20:48] Pink Linden: Lydi, this group has no insight into that decision.
  • [2010/01/19 20:48] Orage Lubitsch: i saw the search at www reacts a bit different even on raking results even when choosing only for parcels.. and sometimes one minute bring ups one company as #1 and another minute or second later shows another. will this "system" of ranking we the one introduced into the inworld viewer results?
  • [2010/01/19 20:49] Lydi Lockhart: A shame.. can you pass the question on to those that does..
  • [2010/01/19 20:49] Lydi Lockhart: or do :)
  • [2010/01/19 20:49] Pink Linden: will do Lydi. May I also sugges Jack Linden's office hours
  • [2010/01/19 20:49] Pink Linden: he's truly the guy to ask
  • [2010/01/19 20:49] Alesandra Markova: you said over all teh growth was good what about since zindra came online. I noticed that sales dived after zindra came online. we used to get adult traffic to our sim mainly becuase of name.. but now none of them come.. so how do the moneys compare to after zindra than before?
  • [2010/01/19 20:49] Colossus Linden: If Liana is still with us, I'll leave that question to her Orage
  • [2010/01/19 20:50] Orage Lubitsch: ok ^^
  • [2010/01/19 20:50] Liana Linden: Orage: There are some known bugs in results ranking on search.sl.com that we expect to have fixed w/in a couple weeks.
  • [2010/01/19 20:51] Colossus Linden: Alesandra, I don't have a perfect handle on the in-world sales data. On Xstreet, it has continued to grow.
  • [2010/01/19 20:51] Liana Linden: If you don't see the issue clear up in the next 2-3 weeks, I'd ask you to file a pJira report.
  • [2010/01/19 20:51] Colossus Linden: Thanks Liana
  • [2010/01/19 20:51] Orage Lubitsch: ok liana
  • [2010/01/19 20:51] Lydi Lockhart: xStreet - I've noticed that the listings have gone a good deal after the annoucement of the new fees, any comments on that?
  • [2010/01/19 20:52] Pink Linden: Lydi, listings are actually on the rise in the last month
  • [2010/01/19 20:53] Orage Lubitsch: regarding the changes at viewer result, what's the good news for 2010? :)
  • [2010/01/19 20:53] Colossus Linden: Orage, I'm not sure I understand your question.
  • [2010/01/19 20:53] Liana Linden: Orage: I'm not sure I can parse that question. Rephrase?
  • [2010/01/19 20:53] Liana Linden: Colossus: Jinx.
  • [2010/01/19 20:54] Orage Lubitsch: (sure)when we will start seeing the mid january changes at search at the inworld resuts.
  • [2010/01/19 20:54] Liana Linden: Are you talking about this release annouced here? https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/technology/blog/2010/01/14/search-upcoming-release--update
  • [2010/01/19 20:55] Liana Linden: If so, the answer is in that update. If not, please be more specific.
  • [2010/01/19 20:55] Khamon Fate: The ALL tab in Search is not showing anything listed in the Classifieds column. Is that a temporary restructuring bug or is that column being removed?
  • [2010/01/19 20:55] Orage Lubitsch: thanks liana :)))
  • [2010/01/19 20:55] Talisien Llewellyn: Any estimate on when the new listing fees will take effect? Also, will inactive listings still be charged fees?
  • [2010/01/19 20:55] Liana Linden: Hi, Khamon. Long time no see.
  • [2010/01/19 20:56] Toysoldier Thor: i guess we wont get an answer as to when the xstreet freebie and clutter fees will be starting? no updates on the progress of the questions asked of colossus on the details of the 10L/month fees?
  • [2010/01/19 20:56] Khamon Fate: I don't get out much
  • [2010/01/19 20:56] Colossus Linden: I don't have a launch date on any changes from the freebie roadmap. When we do, we will message it. We will provide at least 2 weeks notice prior to instituting any change from that roadmap
  • [2010/01/19 20:57] Argus Collingwood: active items only charged?
  • [2010/01/19 20:57] Lydi Lockhart: Q: Can anything be done to improve the emails that get set when a listing is removed for an adult content violation? I recently had a couple of my items removed and I had no idea why some of them were and others were fine when the listings where all the same
  • [2010/01/19 20:57] Pink Linden: Active items only
  • [2010/01/19 20:57] Liana Linden: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-12395
  • [2010/01/19 20:57] Toysoldier Thor: the statement was within 90 days
  • [2010/01/19 20:57] Argus Collingwood: tyty
  • [2010/01/19 20:57] Pink Linden: ywyw. „
  • [2010/01/19 20:57] Colossus Linden: We are currently focussed on a few higher priority projects which should drive more shopping on Xstreet. One of these is the L$ balance merge.
  • [2010/01/19 20:57] Liana Linden: Erk. Copy paste fail. Khamon: Are you referring to the Classifieds bug linked above?
  • [2010/01/19 20:59] Khamon Fate: Yes Thank You, I just noticed it this evening
  • [2010/01/19 20:59] Lydi Lockhart: Colossus, was that to my question? If so, can it be added to the list of things to get to when there is time/priority of keeping merchants from getting pissed off?
  • [2010/01/19 20:59] Liana Linden: If so, that came up in an earlier office hour. And I'll repeat what I said then. That classified bug is a thorn in my side that I can't tell you how badly I want fixed! It's an intermittent problem that is being very hard to solve. Grr.
  • [2010/01/19 21:00] Lydi Lockhart: Cause if I'm going to be paying for a listing, I'm sure the heck not going to like it to have it removed and not know why
  • [2010/01/19 21:00] Colossus Linden: I know Toy. We've begun trying to message upcoming work as early as possible as requested by our merchants and shoppers. This gets you information sooner, but it also means that now and again, we'll over or underestimate a launch
  • [2010/01/19 21:00] Khamon Fate: Grr
  • [2010/01/19 21:01] Colossus Linden: Alright folks, it's 9pm here in San Francisco
  • [2010/01/19 21:01] Alesandra Markova: So no matter what happens with search traffic will still be a primamry search parameter? is that correct? I run a store that sells items, most of my visitors stay for like 5 mins, its unfair that I fall in search due to that one issue....(really hates the traffic metric)....
  • [2010/01/19 21:01] Argus Collingwood: or close to it lol
  • [2010/01/19 21:02] Colossus Linden: You can always send us an IM, but I'm going to need to close this Office Hours session.
  • [2010/01/19 21:02] Liana Linden: Before everyone runs off, I'll post those links I promised earlier in chat.
