  • [13:02 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: wow ... where is everyone?!
  • [13:02 SLT] Jeremy Linden: I was just going to say...
  • [13:02 SLT] Torley Linden: so strange isn't it? ;D
  • [13:02 SLT] Torley Linden: brb i gonna invite some peeps
  • [13:02 SLT] Jeremy Linden: Looks like a smaller crowd this week. Maybe the grid troubles last time turned them off.
  • [13:02 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: yeah ... we were saying that on HIP just now ... nobody around
  • [13:03 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Thought maybe it was a recent sim crash over there but it doesn't explain the quietness here
  • [13:03 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: .
  • [13:04 SLT] Jeremy Linden: It could just be an off week. I think once Torley does his magic we'll be pretty full :-)
  • [13:04 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: haha
  • [13:04 SLT] Jeremy Linden: I'm sure Becky remembers the days when sometimes it was just her and 3 Lindens.
  • [13:04 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Hi Axle
  • [13:04 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: lol wow Becky
  • [13:04 SLT] Becky Pippen: yeah :-)
  • [13:04 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: 3 Lindens all to yourself :)
  • [13:04 SLT] Axle Bookmite: MystiTool seems locked up
  • [13:04 SLT] Jeremy Linden: Something feels slow in this region.
  • [13:04 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Move over a bit Axle
  • [13:04 SLT] Torley Linden: welcome! welcome!
  • [13:05 SLT] Torley Linden: heya Axle and Matt :)
  • [13:05 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: yeah although I see no packet loss
  • [13:05 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Hey we'll have a Linden each once Kate gets here!
  • [13:05 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: woohoo
  • [13:05 SLT] Torley Linden: i wonder what else is happening this week?
  • [13:05 SLT] Matt98371 Parnas: hi
  • [13:05 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Hi Matt
  • [13:06 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Hi Kate
  • [13:06 SLT] Axle Bookmite: It seems that many people in SL seem to be ignoring the CS on intolerance.
  • [13:06 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: The CS?
  • [13:06 SLT] Axle Bookmite: Community Standards
  • [13:06 SLT] Kate Linden: Hello :)
  • [13:07 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Hello Cheop
  • [13:07 SLT] Matt98371 Parnas: can u give an example?
  • [13:08 SLT] Kate Linden: Hi Jeremy, Hi Torley :)
  • [13:08 SLT] WidgetHUD v1.2 (Mono): Kate Linden has pinged you.
  • [13:08 SLT] Jeremy Linden: Hiya Kate.
  • [13:08 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Hello Bau
  • [13:08 SLT] Kate Linden: Hey Saloman :)
  • [13:08 SLT] Saloman Salomon: hello
  • [13:09 SLT] Torley Linden: that's such an alliterative name, Saloman. :)
  • [13:09 SLT] Torley Linden: heya Bau!
  • [13:09 SLT] Bau Ur: :)
  • [13:09 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Hello Saloman
  • [13:09 SLT] Bau Ur: Thngs are looking very fragmented to me. How odd.
  • [13:10 SLT] Jeremy Linden turns on deferred rendering and watches his framerate drop while everything looks awesome.
  • [13:10 SLT] Kate Linden: How is everyone this week?
  • [13:10 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: oooh Jeremy ... how to do that?
  • [13:10 SLT] WidgetHUD v1.2 (Mono): Tourmaline Falken has pinged you.
  • [13:10 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: .
  • [13:11 SLT] Matt98371 Parnas: good kate
  • [13:11 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: oh ... hang on .. frame rate ddrop lol
  • [13:11 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: not what I'm hoping for
  • [13:11 SLT] Becky Pippen: shadows cause my viewer FPS to drop between 30% - 60%... so it's pretty and novel for a while.... :-)
  • [13:11 SLT] Kate Linden: It will be a good test using shadows during this office hour.
  • [13:11 SLT] Jeremy Linden: In the 1.23 RC, you need to open Debug Settings, then set RenderUseFBO to true, then RenderDeferred to True. It'll only work if you have a high-end graphics card, and you'll slow waaaay down.
  • [13:11 SLT] Axle Bookmite: welli'm using 1.22
  • [13:11 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: I sometimes struggle with only 2 fps on the lowest graphics setting ... the joys of an Intel card on a laptop :/
  • [13:12 SLT] Torley Linden: brb
  • [13:12 SLT] Jeremy Linden: Right now it's just there so we can test it- if it breaks your computer we may not be able to provide support.
  • [13:12 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: yeah I'm not going to try it :)
  • [13:12 SLT] Bau Ur: What is its intended function?
  • [13:12 SLT] Bau Ur: What virtue do you hope it will have?
  • [13:13 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Another awesome avatar, Torley :)
  • [13:13 SLT] Torley Linden: thanx Tourma, i haven't worn this in awhile. but the shirt's new. and i was like "these go together!
  • [13:13 SLT] Arawn Spitteler hasn't any graphics card: Linden Labs seems just a little less tolerant, of those who don't meet specs; I can't get rid of that warning, no matter how many times I clicck "DON'T SHOW THIS AGAIN!!!"
  • [13:13 SLT] Torley Linden: welcome aboard, llwelcome aboard, lffaf :)
  • [13:13 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: lol can't say I noticed the shirt
  • [13:13 SLT] Iffaf Ling: Thank you
  • [13:13 SLT] Kate Linden: Arawn, can you show me a screenshot?
  • [13:13 SLT] Becky Pippen: Arawn, that may be fixed internally already... those blue notices that keep coming back
  • [13:14 SLT] Becky Pippen: the Popups
  • [13:14 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Not yet, but I can take one later. This is a black warning at login
  • [13:14 SLT] Saloman Salomon: The shrit was the first thing i noticed
  • [13:14 SLT] Kate Linden: ok thanks.
  • [13:14 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: hmmm I think I was a little bedazzled by the ears and wings
  • [13:14 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: ;)
  • [13:14 SLT] Axle Bookmite: well my main computer which i'm using now has a ATI 9250 radeon PCI card that i put in,iin addition to a fan and a new monitor.
  • [13:14 SLT] Torley Linden: i can dive bomb too :)
  • [13:14 SLT] Bau Ur: :)
  • [13:14 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: The box that says not to show again doesnt' work, which is probably fixed in the 1.23.1
  • [13:15 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: scary ...
  • [13:15 SLT] Torley Linden: Flatscreen Monitor, eh? :) eco-friendly?
  • [13:15 SLT] Kate Linden: oh nice avatar name Flatscreen
  • [13:15 SLT] Flatscreen Monitor: TY
  • [13:15 SLT] Bau Ur: :)
  • [13:15 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: I'm stuck with the Intel Extreme Graphics chipset, that I've heard Andrew vent over, until I have a cash flow.
  • [13:15 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Here too Arawn
  • [13:15 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: But we've had this conversation
  • [13:15 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Does Flatscreen have a second monitor?
  • [13:16 SLT] Torley Linden: thankfully really great graphics cards keep getting cheaper. you can get one that exceeds SL's System Recommendations for under US$50.
  • [13:16 SLT] Kate Linden: Dual Monitor?
  • [13:16 SLT] Flatscreen Monitor: No he does not
  • [13:16 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: I will check that out Torley, but I heard that the Intel graphics card in a laptop will be part of the motherboard and not changeable
  • [13:16 SLT] Axle Bookmite: yeah, i saw a graphics card yesterday at the local Office Depot
  • [13:16 SLT] Torley Linden: yes, alas, with laptops your options are much more limited and you usually can't change it
  • [13:16 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: or anyway, in mine
  • [13:16 SLT] Bau Ur: yeah, laptops, less flexible.
  • [13:16 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: sighs
  • [13:16 SLT] Matt98371 Parnas: mr radeon 1200 does great.........let me double check number
  • [13:17 SLT] Torley Linden: hiya Dakota and Blu, dropping in! :)
  • [13:17 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: You look to have very black skin, and that's sometimes unintentional. It's like when your god shows up as Godzilla, and you don't know if She means to blend in or stand out that millenium.
  • [13:17 SLT] Dakota Schwade: Hi there, disembodied voices.
  • [13:17 SLT] Blu Palou: hi ty
  • [13:17 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Hello Dakota
  • [13:17 SLT] Bau Ur: I have a question about the KB> Is there any system to preventing information from becoming outdated? Is there anyone, for example, that constantly goes through sections checking for outdated or obsolete or wrong content?
  • [13:18 SLT] Bau Ur: Giving notecard on the blackened skin issue
  • [13:18 SLT] Torley Linden: that is a FANTASTIC question Bau!
  • [13:18 SLT] Torley Linden: hiya tasha, welcome to Doc Team office hours chat session!
  • [13:18 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Oh Bau - Can I get a copy please?
  • [13:19 SLT] Arawn Spitteler's ordered Hubbard's How To Live Though An Executive, which addresses such an office, in hope s of developing the next great compiler, and making lots of mney
  • [13:19 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Ty :)
  • [13:19 SLT] Bau Ur: On Flatscreen the blackening looks deliberate. And cool :)
  • [13:19 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Cool i cool
  • [13:19 SLT] Torley Linden: so Bau, we have a project tree where we note "KB additions". we lovingly call it "The Bucket" and add to the queue of revisions for an article. some of these come through a Suggestions Ticket form, which Kate checks regularly
  • [13:20 SLT] Torley Linden: we don't keep staring at an article but we do act on reports that "OMG YOU SHOULD UPDATE THIS NOW" :)
  • [13:20 SLT] Torley Linden: there are a number of places such feedback can come from, so it's useful to have them collected in one place
  • [13:20 SLT] Matt98371 Parnas: i have the radeon xpress 1270 on laptop, wont do sims though
  • [13:20 SLT] Bau Ur: So teh system is quite dependent upon people noticing there is a problem or an obsolete entry.
  • [13:21 SLT] Torley Linden: Laurent! look forward to seeing you at Noelle's meeting tomorrow. thanks for all the helpful work on the French video tutorials so far, merci! http://www.youtube.com/groups_videos?name=LocalisationSL
  • [13:21 SLT] Bau Ur: YAY translators and linguists! I love you!!!
  • [13:21 SLT] Torley Linden: Bau, we also depend on internal communication to keep us up-to-speed, like a new viewer version. since we read the KB a lot ourselves ;) if we notice something we change it.
  • [13:21 SLT] Knowl Paine: sorry
  • [13:21 SLT] Kate Linden: With each release we update articles that have changes to the viewer or server that affect Residents.
  • [13:21 SLT] Laurent Bechir: you're welcome :)
  • [13:21 SLT] Arawn Spitteler triedto connect http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-13174 to KB 4051-4032 today: All Software maintenance is documentation, ultimately
  • [13:22 SLT] Bau Ur: So, when a new viewer is released, the viewer developers do tell you "hey this is going to change A, B, and C, so better check out whatever is said about A, B, and C in the KB?"
  • [13:22 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: QA should have an officer like that
  • [13:22 SLT] Kate Linden: Since I've been on Doc Team, we did review every article in the KB for current and accurate info.
  • [13:22 SLT] Torley Linden: that's a great way to summarize it, Bau. basically yes.
  • [13:23 SLT] Torley Linden: and in addition, we're becoming more cognizant of Resident-created resources like http://wiki.secondlife.com , for there's a lot of non-official but highly beneficial info within.
  • [13:23 SLT] Flatscreen Monitor: Is there a way to find out what sims the screenshots on the startup screen are from?
  • [13:23 SLT] Torley Linden: haha great question Flatscreen =) i don't have a total list but more info here: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Login_screen
  • [13:24 SLT] lizette Iridescent pink/yellow wings: Touched.
  • [13:24 SLT] lizette Iridescent pink/yellow wings: Touched.
  • [13:24 SLT] Dakota Schwade: Popular question, too :-)
  • [13:24 SLT] Torley Linden: yes, rightly so. in the future we'd like to integrate that tighter with Showcase as described.
  • [13:24 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Do we even know that that sim exists?
  • [13:24 SLT] Torley Linden: Arawn, at least when i visited, yes. (i took almost all of the pictures used on the login screen.)
  • [13:24 SLT] Bau Ur: (laughing) is there any way to get rid of those terrible new startup screens without hurting anyone's feelings? Really, most of them are dreadful snapshots. And somewhat distorted by stretching too.
  • [13:25 SLT] Bau Ur: Oh god
  • [13:25 SLT] Torley Linden: some people were like "this is too beautiful, how is it possible!?!?" but i had to educate them about WindLight.
  • [13:25 SLT] Bau Ur: Okay that was one of the largest blunders of my life right there.
  • [13:25 SLT] Torley Linden: Bau, can you please specify what is dreadful? i agree the lack of antialiasing for scaling hurts, and wish there wasn't scaling.
  • [13:25 SLT] Torley Linden: well, it's not a blunder if you're honest, point to what you do like so i understand better. :)
  • [13:26 SLT] Bau Ur: Well, showing the invisiprims on the shoes
  • [13:26 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Hi, Aireanna, and welcome to Second Life
  • [13:26 SLT] Knowl Paine: I'm ok with this
  • [13:26 SLT] Knowl Paine: :)
  • [13:26 SLT] aireanna Mistwalker: hi
  • [13:26 SLT] Torley Linden: invisiprims have never been robust, alas. they're just a hack which, in the future, i hope we don't have to workaround anymore.
  • [13:26 SLT] Bau Ur: photots that include things that don't seem terribly well built
  • [13:26 SLT] Torley Linden: welcome welcome to Documentation Team's office hours! :D
  • [13:27 SLT] Laurent Bechir: anyway we can put any picture we want with loginuri argument at startup, no ?
  • [13:27 SLT] lizette Iridescent pink/yellow wings: Touched.
  • [13:27 SLT] Torley Linden: Laurent, hey, i never actually tried that yet. but if you know a trick, share. :)
  • [13:27 SLT] lizette Iridescent pink/yellow wings: Touched.
  • [13:27 SLT] Torley Linden: OH WHEEE
  • [13:27 SLT] Bau Ur: At the same time, I appreciate the fact that they are not excessively photoshopped and beautified the way startup screens used to be. They were so beautiful that they were essentially false advertising. Sl really does not look that good :)
  • [13:27 SLT] Torley Linden: none of the pictures were photoshopped. they're entirely raw.
  • [13:28 SLT] Torley Linden: as i mentioned earlier, just use of WindLight.
  • [13:28 SLT] Torley Linden: =)
  • [13:28 SLT] lizette Iridescent pink/yellow wings: Touched.
  • [13:28 SLT] Bau Ur: Yeah, I appreciate the honesty of that.
  • [13:28 SLT] Blu Palou: i look at it this way, they are snapshots of things in sl and not everything in sl is well built, so the startup screens show this as well as the beautiful places :)
  • [13:28 SLT] Torley Linden: and yeah, it slays me that... we don't have server-side WindLight yet. but someday, someday... *hopes*
  • [13:28 SLT] Blablablak Botha: sorry if im in the middle of things (still loading)
  • [13:28 SLT] Torley Linden: for instance, i prefer the default sky to be more of a deep blue than it really is. so, i edited my Day Cycle.
  • [13:28 SLT] Blu Palou: and they also reflect that sl is not just about the visual but also the social aspect
  • [13:28 SLT] Arawn Spitteler'd like nights to be less dark, but can only do that by freezing the time of day
  • [13:28 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: It's funny that you feel that way about the login pages, Bau. I find them always interesting and some are so beautiful I have downloaded them to put on the wall on my sl beach house.
  • [13:28 SLT] Kate Linden: Welcome to our Doc Team office hour Blablablak
  • [13:29 SLT] Torley Linden: Arawn, custom day cycle can replace your night.
  • [13:29 SLT] Blablablak Botha: thank you kate
  • [13:29 SLT] Torley Linden: oh here's a video tutorial to clip and save for later: WINDLIGHT: Using the Day Cycle Editor - https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/community/tnt/blog/2009/04/22/video-windlight-using-the-day-cycle-editor
  • [13:29 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: So I could bring light back to my sunrise?
  • [13:29 SLT] Blu Palou: i must go, was nice to see you all :)
  • [13:29 SLT] Torley Linden: yes, you sure could, Arawn.
  • [13:29 SLT] Torley Linden: thanks for being with us, Blu!
  • [13:29 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Does it work without Windlight?
  • [13:29 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: ooh is that new, Torley?
  • [13:30 SLT] Torley Linden: oh for crying out loud i noticed our blog has no "earlier entries" easy paging button. *makes a note*
  • [13:30 SLT] Torley Linden: no Tourma, it's been around awhile but not well understood. so i'm publicizing it.
  • [13:30 SLT] Bau Ur: ooo that would be good to put in, Torley. Cool.
  • [13:30 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: ok :)
  • [13:30 SLT] Blu Palou: you're welcome torley, thanks for the latest batch of textures, i've been having fun building with them :)
  • [13:30 SLT] Torley Linden: yes Arawn, works without Atmospheric Shaders on. won't be as beautiful, but will still work.
  • [13:30 SLT] Torley Linden: oh super to hear that Blu. someday i may make more volumes. we'll see. so much to do in the present.
  • [13:31 SLT] Iffaf Ling: I wouldn't mind having a look at those new textures
  • [13:31 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Devane, please step to one side - someone on your head :)
  • [13:31 SLT] Laurent Bechir: in fact it is "-loginpage <URL>" argument. you add it as argument when you launch Secondlife and you use the page at URL as login page instead of the default one
  • [13:31 SLT] Torley Linden: lffaf, you can get them inworld at Here island, or Xstreet... more info @ http://torley.com/textures
  • [13:31 SLT] Iffaf Ling: thank you
  • [13:31 SLT] Torley Linden: ohhh that might be useful for someone who has a custom dashboard, Laurent!
  • [13:31 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: If she rezzes as slowly as I do, she's still grey
  • [13:32 SLT] Laurent Bechir: yes
  • [13:32 SLT] Torley Linden: there are some things that'll inevitably happen... just... not ... yet.
  • [13:32 SLT] Dakota Schwade: You guys needs some tunes here :-)
  • [13:33 SLT] Torley Linden: what kinda tunes did you have in mind? ;D
  • [13:33 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: What a thing to suggest near Torley
  • [13:33 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: lol
  • [13:33 SLT] Dakota Schwade: Anything. The silence is deafening.
  • [13:33 SLT] Torley Linden: btw, what Laurent mentions is listed on this page, https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Client_parameters ways of customizing the viewer upon startup
  • [13:33 SLT] Torley Linden: i used to use MediaMaster to stream my own music but they went under; i've had a drone station of ambient stuff on Here island ever since
  • [13:33 SLT] Blablablak Botha: oh yea i checked that out after your multiple viewers tutorial
  • [13:34 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: Torley i only checked out your video tutorials last week. They're great!
  • [13:34 SLT] Torley Linden: oh yeah! totally Blablablak, that's a great example
  • [13:34 SLT] Bau Ur: They are super.
  • [13:34 SLT] Torley Linden: oh kewl , thanks Ingrid! great to see ya, it's been so long =)
  • [13:34 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: i put video tutorial kiosk at the Violet infohub
  • [13:34 SLT] Torley Linden: and oh yeah i'm going to be doing Xstreet tutorials in the future
  • [13:34 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: you too!
  • [13:34 SLT] Torley Linden: oh thank you very much :-D
  • [13:34 SLT] Blablablak Botha: yea at the end you mentioned client parameters i believe so i searched for sl parameters on google
  • [13:34 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: oh good
  • [13:34 SLT] Blablablak Botha: oooo xstreet tutorials!
  • [13:34 SLT] Torley Linden: there are going to be some changes to Xstreet =) exciting stuff, so wait for those
  • [13:34 SLT] Kate Linden: music and video: http://vimeo.com/2914268
  • [13:35 SLT] Torley Linden: i get a kick out of that epic action music ;D
  • [13:35 SLT] Kate Linden: lol me too
  • [13:35 SLT] Torley Linden: hmm maybe we need a seaside ambience kind of station that plays water sounds since we ARE on a dock
  • [13:35 SLT] Torley Linden: hur hurr hurrr
  • [13:35 SLT] Knowl Paine: :)
  • [13:36 SLT] Torley Linden: Kate you totally look like a movie star with those glasses and waving on a director's chair like that
  • [13:36 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: Do you guys know if there's going to be anything new for the infohubs to help new players? I noticed a tutorial thing in Hyannisport, a kiosk that has some "how to" info
  • [13:36 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Something Mormon, like the Seagul Tab&Apple Choir?
  • [13:36 SLT] Bau Ur: It's really good that videos are in the Second Life Help portal now. I must say, a year or so ago, when anyone had a question, I seldom sent them to the wiki or the KB because it just was not good enough and was too hard to navigate. It is really good now. I am glad it is accessible from the Help menu and I no longer hesitate to refer people to it.
  • [13:36 SLT] Kate Linden: lol that was my ocean wave
  • [13:36 SLT] Torley Linden: i'm not sure yet Ingrid, but let's see, Michael and Patch would be good to ask about that, they've been setting them up
  • [13:36 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: okie doke
  • [13:37 SLT] Kate Linden: Bau that's great feedback.
  • [13:37 SLT] Matt98371 Parnas: are there some tutorial sites for very newbies on sl?
  • [13:37 SLT] Dakota Schwade: For English speakers, you could direct people to the University of Caledon Oxbridge. Self-guided learning there.
  • [13:37 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: well there's Torley's online tutorials which are great...got a link torley?
  • [13:37 SLT] Torley Linden: Matt98371, we have a new Quickstart Guide, have you seen it? http://tr.im/quickstart :) it's a PDF and also, http://secondlife.com/whatis which is going to be iterated further
  • [13:37 SLT] Dakota Schwade: It's a Community Gateway, very newbie friendly.
  • [13:37 SLT] Usil Bailey: NCI's Caledon si wonderful
  • [13:37 SLT] Torley Linden: Ingrid oh yeah, easy link is http://secondlife.com/video
  • [13:38 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Phoenixia is a new sim specially designed to give newbie info
  • [13:38 SLT] Bau Ur: Good as the KB is now, it nevertheless cannot replace a good initial introduction to SL. I truly wish there were decent orientation islands. People need to be given the basics before they are thrown into the wash of everything.
  • [13:38 SLT] Matt98371 Parnas: cool ty
  • [13:38 SLT] Torley Linden: and there's a Basics category, you can just search for "basics" or use the Browse tab
  • [13:38 SLT] Kate Linden: Here is a list of references to get a new person started: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/community/tnt/blog/2009/04/28/welcome-to-the-second-life-virtual-world-reference-tips-for-beginners
  • [13:38 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: I had a lot of benefit from Teleportation Trail, but never finished before it did
  • [13:38 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: they should make a kiosk in world with that quickstart guide in it
  • [13:38 SLT] Torley Linden: we've been discussing similar themes, Bau. that never gets old, learning what we can from other worlds and games and experiences, too.
  • [13:38 SLT] Torley Linden: hmmm like an inworld version of the Quickstart Guide, Ingrid? prims? or a link to the PDF?
  • [13:38 SLT] Usil Bailey: Grabbing Links as fast as I can :XD
  • [13:39 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: well like a kisok where you just click next to read the next page of the pdf
  • [13:39 SLT] Matt98371 Parnas: me too usil lol
  • [13:39 SLT] Bau Ur: I think it would be great to have a station at Orientation that tells people to check out the stuff under the Help button, including the link to the KB.
  • [13:39 SLT] Dakota Schwade: Is that pdf going to be translated? I can't remember.
  • [13:39 SLT] Torley Linden: ahhh. i should let the Quick Start team know about that. it should be scripted to automatically position the camera, since that's tricky when you're new too. i know some inworld book readers do it
  • [13:39 SLT] Torley Linden: sure is, Dakota.
  • [13:39 SLT] Kennef Riggles: hey everyone
  • [13:39 SLT] Dakota Schwade: Very good.
  • [13:39 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Hey Kennef
  • [13:39 SLT] Torley Linden: heya Kennef!
  • [13:40 SLT] Sana Holmer: hi all
  • [13:40 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Orientation could also be sensitized to prior experience. I came in world with no experience in IRC, but lots in Omega
  • [13:40 SLT] Torley Linden: welcome to our Doc Team office hours! =D
  • [13:40 SLT] Kennef Riggles: Torley!!! i made it!!! via Ajaxlife no less!!
  • [13:40 SLT] Kennef Riggles: heya Tourmaline
  • [13:40 SLT] Torley Linden: wow really.
  • [13:40 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: so what does the DOC team do?
  • [13:40 SLT] Dakota Schwade: Look at hovering clouds, like Kennef :-)
  • [13:40 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Kennef is rezzed for me
  • [13:40 SLT] Torley Linden: Arawn, yes, it's important to consider previous background. in some cases, that's what Solution Providers and people who make their own orientation experiences do.
  • [13:41 SLT] Kennef Riggles: yeah i am gonna be cloudy likely... logging in from work via ajaxlife
  • [13:41 SLT] Jeremy Linden: Heheh. Doc team generates DOCumentation in the form of the Knowledge Base and other side projects :-)
  • [13:41 SLT] Torley Linden: there was someone awhile ago who made an intro to SL that was very sim-ish, for players of Sims Online. even had an HUD for skills that looked stangely familiar. ;)
  • [13:41 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: gotcha
  • [13:41 SLT] Bau Ur: (again I say: YAY translators who make the fun of SL accessible to so many people who would otherwise struggle. I love all translators, linguist mentors, and volunteers who set up support systems for nonEnglish speakers.)
  • [13:41 SLT] Torley Linden: "Doc" is a nice double entendre because it makes us sound like Doctors. haha.
  • [13:41 SLT] Kennef Riggles: and awesome videos... *cjeck*
  • [13:41 SLT] Usil Bailey: lol
  • [13:41 SLT] Torley Linden: yeah, videos are pretty much what i do. lol. funny how that started as a minor side project back in the day. oh boy.
  • [13:41 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: so potentially you guys would be making stuff for the infohubs for new players?
  • [13:41 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Thank you Bau ;) I speak french and help out
  • [13:41 SLT] Iffaf Ling: Slightly different question - can I get rid of the ambient sound for everyone on my land? How?
  • [13:42 SLT] Kate Linden: oh wow, did you guys see the awesome video made from the Translators party?
  • [13:42 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: whee I can
  • [13:42 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: where*
  • [13:42 SLT] Jeremy Linden: And we're on a dock! Well, maybe it's more of a pier. Would that mean we participate in pier review?
  • [13:42 SLT] Torley Linden: but i am really, REALLY thrilled as more people make videos, it's expanding.
  • [13:42 SLT] Bau Ur: Yes, and Orientation Station is very good too. It is hard for me to imagine whey so many existing good models have not been implementted in the official entry islands. It's puzzling.
  • [13:42 SLT] Torley Linden: HAHAHA Jeremy.
  • [13:42 SLT] WidgetHUD v1.2 (Mono): Torley Linden has pinged you.
  • [13:42 SLT] Bau Ur: Ouch Jeremy
  • [13:42 SLT] WidgetHUD v1.2 (Mono): Bau Ur has pinged you.
  • [13:42 SLT] Dakota Schwade: No Kate, didn't see those videos.
  • [13:42 SLT] Laurent Bechir: yes very nice video !
  • [13:42 SLT] Torley Linden: lffaf, could it be an invisible sound orb making those sounds? you'll need to show it and take them, mute them, or otherwise disable them depending how they work.
  • [13:42 SLT] Kennef Riggles: Torley, impersonating a Doctor is a crime... becareful on translating this ocer into RL... lol
  • [13:42 SLT] Bau Ur sighs and notes that push is disabled here so it will do no good to shoot Jeremy.
  • [13:42 SLT] Arawn Spitteler doens't get the entendre: Doctor meant Teacher, originally, and is likely related to Documentation. Root word related to Thought, also
  • [13:42 SLT] WidgetHUD v1.2 (Mono): Bau Ur has pinged you.
  • [13:43 SLT] Iffaf Ling: Torley, I meant the wind blowing through
  • [13:43 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Anyone here need an Fx D?
  • [13:43 SLT] Jeremy Linden: Well, that's an interesting connection, Arawn. I didn't know that!
  • [13:43 SLT] Torley Linden: (sorry i don't accept friendship requests on my Linden acct. but please feel free to send to my pleasure alt, Torley Olmstead :) )
  • [13:43 SLT] Kennef Riggles: chat lag is going to make my very un-witty
  • [13:43 SLT] Torley Linden: mmm etymology.
  • [13:43 SLT] Kate Linden: I think this was the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqhUSMILit8
  • [13:43 SLT] Torley Linden: oh and Ingrid we haven't historically done all of that but we've helped influence what goes in the Infohubs.
  • [13:43 SLT] Ingrid Ingersoll: ah!
  • [13:44 SLT] Blablablak Botha: (by the way i like the watermelon slice on top of the shack torley)
  • [13:44 SLT] Torley Linden: documentation does hook into/connect with many areas.
  • [13:44 SLT] Usil Bailey: Kate , Is this chat just starting or almost over ?
  • [13:44 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Is it a crime to misrepresent your self as a doctor, or as a Physician, or as a Physician liscensed to practice in the United States?
  • [13:44 SLT] Torley Linden: haha thanks Blablablah i was too lazy to write my name in full. XD
  • [13:44 SLT] Knowl Paine: I was wondering about time in SL and if in the future SL could be divided into time zones
  • [13:44 SLT] Torley Linden: i'm a Doctor of Awesome and i don't give a damn what anyone else thinks
  • [13:44 SLT] Usil Bailey: WTG Torley
  • [13:44 SLT] Kennef Riggles: haha
  • [13:44 SLT] Kate Linden: Doc Team office hours start at 1 pm PT until 2 pm Usil
  • [13:44 SLT] Usil Bailey: ok
  • [13:44 SLT] Usil Bailey: tankee
  • [13:44 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Have you written your diploma yet, Torley?
  • [13:44 SLT] Doctor Gascoigne: not my team
  • [13:44 SLT] Dakota Schwade: Kennef, somebody's trying to land on your head.
  • [13:44 SLT] Leia Cale: LOL! ^-^
  • [13:44 SLT] Kate Linden: Hey Doc :)
  • [13:44 SLT] Doctor Gascoigne: documentation
  • [13:44 SLT] Torley Linden: and hey, we have a Doctor Gascoigne in tha hizzouse!
  • [13:45 SLT] Leia Cale: hey
  • [13:45 SLT] Kennef Riggles: shoot
  • [13:45 SLT] Doctor Gascoigne: hey!
  • [13:45 SLT] Doctor Gascoigne: Torley
  • [13:45 SLT] Kennef Riggles: can someone push me
  • [13:45 SLT] Torley Linden: written it, Arawn? I rapped it with a phat beat!
  • [13:45 SLT] Blablablak Botha: lol a think a new arrival point may be needed
  • [13:45 SLT] Kennef Riggles: i cant move on my own
  • [13:45 SLT] Kate Linden: Nice to see you :)
  • [13:45 SLT] Torley Linden: hahahah this is hilarious
  • [13:45 SLT] Kennef Riggles: its all my fault
  • [13:45 SLT] Bau Ur: :)
  • [13:45 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: I like that, a diploma published in Rap. For mine, you're supposed to put two virgins togeather, but that goes back before Ganesha, or Agni
  • [13:45 SLT] Leia Cale: dont mind my title its evil titler lol
  • [13:45 SLT] Torley Linden: welcome each and everyone to Documentation Team's office hours! we're the masters of Tips & Tricks in Second Life and caretakers of http://secondlife.com/kb ! we wanna make your SL better =D
  • [13:45 SLT] Kennef Riggles: stand me up in the corner like i was a scarecrow

  • [13:46 SLT] GOLAN Eilde: hi Leia
  • [13:46 SLT] Torley Linden: Kennef i gotta say, you floating around like that, spinning in circles, is positively hypnotic.
  • [13:46 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: lol Keneef
  • [13:46 SLT] Leia Cale: woops
  • [13:46 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Kennef*
  • [13:46 SLT] Bau Ur: Such a shame, I don't have a long list of things to complain about.
  • [13:46 SLT] Usil Bailey: lol
  • [13:47 SLT] Kennef Riggles: seriously... this is the only way i could stop in at work... i love me some Ajaxlife
  • [13:47 SLT] Kate Linden: We might need to adjust our landing area lol
  • [13:47 SLT] Leia Cale: yep
  • [13:47 SLT] Torley Linden: oh yeah Kate where do you think it should be? i like center cause it's fun to watch everyone fall, we can set it higher so they go wuhahaaaaaaaaaaaa
  • [13:47 SLT] Torley Linden: hahahahaha
  • [13:47 SLT] Torley Linden: WE CAN SEE YOU
  • [13:47 SLT] Torley Linden: WE ARE WATCHING YOU
  • [13:47 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: I atteded Zero's Address at Pooley Stage, and that had a lot of Lindens. It also had a griefer's spam toy, that left a ghosted prim singing
  • [13:47 SLT] Leia Cale: haha your mean torley
  • [13:47 SLT] Torley Linden: wait, that's kinda creepy. scratch that.
  • [13:47 SLT] Kate Linden: lol
  • [13:47 SLT] Dakota Schwade: Now there's an idea.
  • [13:47 SLT] Usil Bailey: ha ha ha
  • [13:47 SLT] Kate Linden: What's the record for stacked avatars in SL?
  • [13:48 SLT] Torley Linden: we could put a waterslide or funny sort of... hmmm...
  • [13:48 SLT] Bau Ur: teh wuaaaah though would give people time to fly up and to the side instead of swimming on top of one another.
  • [13:48 SLT] Torley Linden: Kate, i once participated in a stack of like 35 avatars, almost the region full!
  • [13:48 SLT] Leia Cale: um theres a youtubbe video of that Kate
  • [13:48 SLT] Dakota Schwade: I smell a Guiness World Record of SL coming on :-)
  • [13:48 SLT] Torley Linden: Willow Zander hosted it, many moons ago
  • [13:48 SLT] Kennef Riggles: ok... did i get myself out of the way?
  • [13:48 SLT] Usil Bailey: Torley I got here late so lemme ask,,If you could only give ONE link to a new person what would you give them ???
  • [13:48 SLT] Kate Linden: I'm game
  • [13:48 SLT] Bau Ur: Gosh Torley. Isn't that still illegal in Alabama?
  • [13:48 SLT] Leia Cale: a buch of furrys did furry Jenga
  • [13:48 SLT] Torley Linden: oh it wasn't a worry Kennef, it was just very fun to watch ya spin

  • [13:48 SLT] Kennef Riggles: hehehe
  • [13:48 SLT] Usil Bailey: kk
  • [13:48 SLT] Usil Bailey: tankee
  • [13:48 SLT] Leia Cale: furry jenga is fun
  • [13:49 SLT] Bau Ur: So what's new with the KB? Is there a particular area where you could use volunteer help?
  • [13:49 SLT] Torley Linden: AnthroJenga! it's a hit with skunks and dragons alike!
  • [13:49 SLT] Explorer Dastardly: hello
  • [13:49 SLT] Bau Ur: Anything especially exciting or challenging lately?
  • [13:49 SLT] Leia Cale: haha
  • [13:49 SLT] Torley Linden: funny, er, meaningful you mention that, Bau. we're actually "looking at ways" we can get more Residents to contribute their time-tested, valued-experience knowledge.
  • [13:49 SLT] Torley Linden: more details to that to come. as they come.
  • [13:49 SLT] Blablablak Botha: is there a way so that when i get a new IM it shows me it in chat, not just a button telling me that I got a new IM
  • [13:50 SLT] Torley Linden: yeah Blablablak, it's a preference option. :)
  • [13:50 SLT] Blablablak Botha: can't seem to find it in preferences
  • [13:50 SLT] Bau Ur: Blab you can set your IM to show in chat, or not. By default it does,.
  • [13:50 SLT] Torley Linden: Preferences > Communication tab > Include Im in Local Chat
  • [13:50 SLT] Kennef Riggles: but it only shows it if you dont have the local chat window open at the time
  • [13:50 SLT] Usil Bailey: When I help someone I always ask them to Pay It forward if they can,,,many do
  • [13:50 SLT] Torley Linden: that should show in the chat console (the transparent overlay, not the window)
  • [13:50 SLT] Kennef Riggles: not that i ever did that or anythign
  • [13:51 SLT] Torley Linden: yes Usil, that's true amplifying the awesome, spreading knowledge!
  • [13:51 SLT] Kennef Riggles: lol
  • [13:51 SLT] Blablablak Botha: oh wow thats obvious, i feel embarrassed now...
  • [13:51 SLT] Torley Linden: we started out very quiet today but are glad you could all join us!
  • [13:51 SLT] Torley Linden: DON'T be embarrassed. i'm happy you asked!
  • [13:51 SLT] Bau Ur: Bloab, SL has so many millions of settings, no one should be embarrassed at overlooking anything :)
  • [13:51 SLT] Torley Linden: there is no shame in the quest for knowledge, only pursuit of answers and discovery!
  • [13:51 SLT] Dakota Schwade: The tubes in my amplifier broken, gotta get to Radio Shack :-)
  • [13:51 SLT] Torley Linden: once you know, you're empowered to tell a friend!
  • [13:51 SLT] Usil Bailey grins
  • [13:51 SLT] Blablablak Botha: huzzah!
  • [13:52 SLT] Laurent Bechir: one nice option would be the possibility to stop im showing up when there a lot to read in the chat like now :)
  • [13:52 SLT] Usil Bailey: Help one person,,,nice ,,,teach another how to help and find answers,,,way Nice !
  • [13:52 SLT] Leia Cale: eeo golan you make me look short
  • [13:52 SLT] Explorer Dastardly: then I shall ask, Since the Linden award went only to big companines, has the Lidens thought of such and award for outstanding individuals>
  • [13:52 SLT] GOLAN Eilde: but you are
  • [13:52 SLT] GOLAN Eilde: lol
  • [13:52 SLT] Torley Linden: Explorer, there was also the Resident's Choice Awards.
  • [13:53 SLT] Usil Bailey: Yes seen that
  • [13:53 SLT] Blablablak Botha: well that would be the opposite of my problem laurent, just turn the function off and IM will not show up local chat (or so i'm told :])
  • [13:53 SLT] Torley Linden: the Linden Prize was NOT restricted to "big companies" and i'd argue Wikitecture isn't a big corp
  • [13:53 SLT] Usil Bailey: It was cool
  • [13:53 SLT] Leia Cale: was the winners anoouced fr that resident wards?
  • [13:53 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: When do we hear about the REsidents Choice Awards?
  • [13:53 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: echo Leia lol
  • [13:53 SLT] Usil Bailey: And Sam Is very special to so many
  • [13:53 SLT] Leia Cale: hehe
  • [13:53 SLT] Explorer Dastardly: no but Cancer is
  • [13:53 SLT] Torley Linden: there were already winners announcements about both of those on http://blogs.secondlife.com
  • [13:53 SLT] Explorer Dastardly: so a few of us felt confused
  • [13:53 SLT] Torley Linden: "Virtual Ability" isn't a big corp either that i'm aware of... :)
  • [13:53 SLT] Explorer Dastardly: yes, aware
  • [13:53 SLT] Torley Linden: they're certainly driven groups who've contributed, yes
  • [13:54 SLT] Usil Bailey: No But they work wonders for many
  • [13:54 SLT] Leia Cale: VA is nonprofit i thought
  • [13:54 SLT] Torley Linden: one person can make a severe difference in the best of ways for many
  • [13:54 SLT] Bau Ur: I'm glad they were acknowledged. I love it when anyone doing good works gets some appreciation.
  • [13:54 SLT] Torley Linden: one person can bring about so much positive change, never doubt your own power
  • [13:54 SLT] Explorer Dastardly: but Virtual is an NPO
  • [13:54 SLT] Explorer Dastardly: so that was confusing
  • [13:54 SLT] Dakota Schwade: http://virtualability.org/default.aspx
  • [13:55 SLT] Leia Cale: VA is awesome glad we have something like that in Sl now
  • [13:55 SLT] Sana Holmer: what is a good way to stop bots
  • [13:55 SLT] Torley Linden: thanks for the link :)
  • [13:55 SLT] Torley Linden: Sana, which bots? there are numerous types. specifics please!
  • [13:55 SLT] Explorer Dastardly: I try very hard with the lecture serie s I set up in the Holocaust and my Burning Life projects
  • [13:55 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Do you mean as in, Don't sponsor Camping?
  • [13:55 SLT] Sana Holmer: campers
  • [13:55 SLT] Usil Bailey: I love It when a new person on my freinds list IM's me all excited,,"I help someone today It was Fun "
  • [13:55 SLT] Explorer Dastardly: and will continue to use SL for RL educations against hate
  • [13:55 SLT] Roxette Mabellon: And how can you detect if an avatar is a bot ?
  • [13:55 SLT] Leia Cale: I love to help ppl
  • [13:55 SLT] Laurent Bechir: ask him :)
  • [13:55 SLT] Leia Cale: or share my geek ways
  • [13:55 SLT] Bau Ur: Hmm, yeah, there is a big problem now with cmaping bots that crash sims. I didn't see that in the KB. Would be good to inform people of it. I bet tehre are people with camping chairs on their property and no clue whey their regions keep crashing.
  • [13:55 SLT] Leia Cale: lol
  • [13:55 SLT] Blablablak Botha: being a mentor seems like it would be fun
  • [13:56 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: Ultimately, any algorhym will be guess work
  • [13:56 SLT] Doctor Gascoigne: it can be challenging
  • [13:56 SLT] Doctor Gascoigne: I have been a mentor a long time
  • [13:56 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: Come along to Help Island Public to offer help anytime :)
  • [13:56 SLT] Torley Linden: the whole bots thing is part of a larger discussion... re: landbots you should see Jack's post. camping bots, if substantiated, may be obstructing resource usage. should file an abuse report so the bot owner can be disciplined.
  • [13:56 SLT] Doctor Gascoigne: it is rewarding
  • [13:56 SLT] Blablablak Botha: i can understand that
  • [13:57 SLT] Torley Linden: it's one of those things that has a common word but really needs to be examined on a case-by-case basis, like most tools/automation.
  • [13:57 SLT] Usil Bailey: OH OH Found It ,check this out ,,,Its about Bots,,: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/land/blog/2009/04/23/conclusion-to-the-blog-post-on-bots
  • [13:57 SLT] Torley Linden: thanks Usil!
  • [13:58 SLT] Usil Bailey: May be old news by now,,,but Its all I have
  • [13:58 SLT] Iffaf Ling: ouch - Tatuka
  • [13:58 SLT] Leia Cale: im not big on camping i love lucky chairs and Midnight Mania though
  • [13:58 SLT] Arawn Spitteler: One prblem is that a type of Camp-Bot is presently chopping physical vehicles, by selecting everything
  • [13:58 SLT] Torley Linden: i once won a prize in a Lucky Toilet
  • [13:58 SLT] Torley Linden: i had to sit down there with a group tag for 10 min to get my prize tho, so i opted out :(
  • [13:58 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: lol Torley
  • [13:58 SLT] Bau Ur: The problem with the camping bots is that they touch and activate everything in a region, including any physicals that may be present and this can freeze everything that is happeing in a sim. If not actually crash it.
  • [13:58 SLT] Dakota Schwade: Gee that's, um, great Torley :-)
  • [13:58 SLT] Usil Bailey: Camping lol ,,cost more in electricity to run the PC than you earn in camping lol
  • [13:58 SLT] Leia Cale: lol lucky toliet thats a first
  • [13:59 SLT] Torley Linden: ugh Arawn yeah that vehicle-selection-freeze has bothered me on a level for a long time
  • [13:59 SLT] Rand Linden: bye all...gotta go to another meeting!
  • [13:59 SLT] Bau Ur: right, selecting, not activatioin, I mean.
  • [13:59 SLT] Knowl Paine: not me
  • [13:59 SLT] Explorer Dastardly: I have one more question, my friend is deaf and uses SL , but VOIP is a challenge for , will the new canidate help those with disabilities
  • [13:59 SLT] Torley Linden: Usil, hey, some people fall for Nigerian 411 scams too!
  • [13:59 SLT] Dakota Schwade: Ditto, gotta run.
  • [13:59 SLT] Usil Bailey: See Ya Rand
  • [13:59 SLT] Kate Linden: Wow has it been an hour already?
  • [13:59 SLT] Torley Linden: it's a human problem.
  • [13:59 SLT] Knowl Paine: you must not be getting run over
  • [13:59 SLT] Sana Holmer: bye Rand
  • [13:59 SLT] Dakota Schwade: Bye folks.
  • [13:59 SLT] Blablablak Botha: see ya rand
  • [13:59 SLT] Tourmaline Falken: LOL Kate - that is usually my line
  • [13:59 SLT] Torley Linden: Explorer, new Release Candidate? not specifically that i know of but we continue to improve Viewer usability.
  • [13:59 SLT] Bau Ur often wants to de-bug humans.
  • [14:00 SLT] Doctor Gascoigne: we are all very much waiting for the new viewer
  • [14:00 SLT] Torley Linden: it's most useful to see what enhancements other programs have adopted too, so we know it's (1) been done and (2) proven useful.
