If not intentional, this is an issue that typically manifests itself as your avatar being a solid or otherwise clashing color, or featuring spikes, bumps, and other unsightly protrusions coming out of your body.
 
First, if your graphics card meets our [http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php System Requirements], make sure you've updated to the newest drivers. This has historically been known to affect Residents with ATI cards more than nVIDIA ones.
