When and Where?

Meetings will be held every first Thursday of a month at 21:15 MEZ (12:15 PM SLT) at the German Linguists Pavillion(note) Sandbox or Theater at SLVEC. Meetings will be advertised at the Volunteer-sponsored_Events article, in the Volunteers Mailinglist and as a groupnotice in the Second Life German Mentor group. Review the Style Guide and Glossary

Quote from How to Localize Your World#Review the Style Guide and Glossary:

Linden Lab has created a Style Guide and Glossary for each of the seven languages it supports. These contain the translation recommendations for each language. Reviewing this before beginning translation will save translation time and error, and make changes easier for Linden employees to QA and incorporate in a new viewer.

This Style Guide recommends to translate the English word You with the German Sie. German Linguists considered this translation as inapropriate for a medium such as the Second Life Wiki. We discussed this topic at a previous meeting and got the feedback from Lexie Linden to translate formal articles (like rules and guidelines) with "Sie", while using "Du" for conversational topics. A revision of already translated articles is welcomed but no must.

Project: Volunteer Portal Translation

A translation of the Volunteer Portal was suggested and started at User:Zai_Lynch/Sandbox/Volunteer_Portal/de. It will be moved to Volunteer Portal/de as soon as the article is readable. Guidelines for this project were discussed at a previous meeting and are as follows:

  • German articles should link to other German articles instead of linking to their English parents.
  • If no German translation is available, please mark the link to the English article with a bold and red asterisk *. The required wiki-code is: <font color="red">'''*'''</font>. Please also add this page to our to-do-list at German_Linguists/Portal_Translation_Project.
  • Create new articles with German titles and enter redirects to ENGLISHARTICLENAME/de. For example:
Create an article named Mentorenanwärter with a redirect to SL_Apprentice_Mentors/de using the wiki code #REDIRECT [[SL_Apprentice_Mentors/de]] as its only content.
  • Search the English pendent to orphaned German articles and move them to ENGLISHARTICLENAME/de. If there is no English pendent, create one with a brief summary about the content and then move the orphaned German article as mentioned above.

Please don't edit these guidelines without a discussion at either the related discussion page or at one of the German Linguists Meetings.

ISO 639-1 vs. ISO 639-3

The Mentor Linguist Scribe Translation Project is advertising the use of Template:Multi-lang which uses ISO 639-1. Since this is the only semi-official resource we have about LL's plans regarding the wiki-structure, we should name German translations of existing articles as ARTICLENAME/de. Not ARTICLENAME/deu. However, the wiki is currently a mix of both ISO's since Template:ISO 639-3/cat-speaking is using ISO 636-3 (like it's name indicates). Please move articles you find using the /deu naming to /de. Google states that Mentors Teaching Mentors/deu is currently the only affected article. If you find more, please list them on this page! Please also have a look at WEB-456 and Project:I18n regarding internationalisation.
