Summary

A short summary of the decisions and discussed topics of this meeting:

  • Danica thanks for the work and effort.
  • Tom is going to proofread all submitted translations (unless the translator doesn't like to).
  • Tom is going to submit suggestions for changes in the glossary.
  • It is O.K. to change the wording in formal articles into formal German while translating non-formal English.
  • Quality Assurance (AQ) is done by an agency in San Francisco (SF), who are required to use SL and who are basically correcting spelling and interpunctuation.

(+ further topics. going to expand the summary)

  • [10:02 SLT] Danica Linden: thank you very much for all the help guys!!!
  • [10:02 SLT] Lore Lamont: sorry, was IM ing a french newbie..mentoring from everywhere ;)
  • [10:02 SLT] Danica Linden: really appreciated
  • [10:02 SLT] Lexie Linden: lol nice Lore!
  • [10:02 SLT] Lore Lamont: well i get used to the translations
  • [10:02 SLT] Lore Lamont: only have to face probs with the glossary
  • [10:02 SLT] Danica Linden: do you find them difficult?
  • [10:02 SLT] Danica Linden: what do you mean?
  • [10:02 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: as far as I can see it the CT project is going fine, though there are some issues concerning the glossary and the need of creating a glossary for the web content
  • [10:03 SLT] Lore Lamont: its more difficult to find the right german terms but i am always in discussion with tom
  • [10:03 SLT] Danica Linden: you mean we need to gloss more terms?
  • [10:03 SLT] Danica Linden: great that 2 of you work together, Tom and Lore
  • [10:03 SLT] Danica Linden: always helps to team up on translation/editing
  • [10:03 SLT] Lexie Linden: right
  • [10:04 SLT] Danica Linden: are the articles difficult to translate?
  • [10:04 SLT] Danica Linden: do you find the language challenging?
  • [10:04 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: oh we pretty all teamwork, this is necessary in order to archieve it that the translations for different terms that are errorneus or missing in the glossary stay the same even if different translators work on different KB articles
  • [10:04 SLT] Lore Lamont: the language is fine, i learn a lot and its fun to turn it into german
  • [10:04 SLT] Danica Linden: thank you very much for that
  • [10:05 SLT] Danica Linden: also, please, if you'd like, send me your suggestions for glossary items
  • [10:05 SLT] Lexie Linden: good idea
  • [10:05 SLT] Lore Lamont: today i talked with tom about all this
  • [10:05 SLT] Danica Linden: or new glossary items that are not in the existing glossary
  • [10:05 SLT] Lore Lamont: i think it might be a good idea if he concentrates on proofreading our translations
  • [10:05 SLT] Lexie Linden: Your feedback on that glossary will help improve it
  • [10:05 SLT] Lore Lamont: so he can collect all the terms for the glossary
  • [10:05 SLT] Lore Lamont: and put all articles in the same way
  • [10:06 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: actually danica... I am working on a review on the current glossary and I am going through the german UI to get the missing pieces, so I will be able to send you a list shortly with alot of fixes... I felt free to comment on my change requests which would make the handling easier for you
  • [10:06 SLT] Lexie Linden: Sounds like a good plan
  • [10:06 SLT] Danica Linden: thank you!!!!!!
  • [10:06 SLT] Danica Linden: that is great
  • [10:06 SLT] Lexie Linden: : ))
  • [10:06 SLT] Lore Lamont: thank you
  • [10:06 SLT] Danica Linden: we can update the glossary and repost it for further translations
  • [10:07 SLT] Danica Linden: do you find certain articles more difficult than others? and, do you have a preference on what kind of articles you like to work on?
  • [10:07 SLT] Lexie Linden: We are going to try to bring in more translators also. We know there are more out there that would love to help too.
  • [10:07 SLT] Lore Lamont: well i avoided the create terrain article
  • [10:07 SLT] Lore Lamont: cause thats stuff i dont know
  • [10:07 SLT] Danica Linden: ok
  • [10:07 SLT] Lore Lamont: bu all other is okay
  • [10:08 SLT] Danica Linden: ok. good.
  • [10:08 SLT] Lore Lamont: and i will even try tahat one if nobody else picks it ;)
  • [10:08 SLT] Danica Linden: :)
  • [10:08 SLT] Lexie Linden: : ))
  • [10:08 SLT] Lexie Linden: I think you all are making good progress on those articles
  • [10:08 SLT] Danica Linden: yes, definitely
  • [10:09 SLT] Lexie Linden: I want to blog about it on vteam blog pretty soon too
  • [10:09 SLT] Lore Lamont: so what i think that after translating we should just change the articles to edit, so that tom knows they are ready for review
  • [10:09 SLT] Lexie Linden: : ))
  • [10:09 SLT] Danica Linden: I hope it is enjoyable as well
  • [10:09 SLT] Danica Linden: that would really help
  • [10:09 SLT] Lore Lamont: i have lots of fun with it :)
  • [10:09 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: it is always a bit of a hazzle concerning the style... some articles that relate to financial issues are written in a pretty familiar style in the english version, while it might be showing a better effect to change it a bit more into the formal style for the german version,,,,
  • [10:09 SLT] Danica Linden: that is fine
  • [10:10 SLT] Danica Linden: especially the articles around PayPal, credit cards, etc., please, feel free to adjust the "register" of them
  • [10:10 SLT] Danica Linden: American English is rather casual
  • [10:10 SLT] Danica Linden: in all matters
  • [10:10 SLT] Lexie Linden: hehe
  • [10:10 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: danica... would it technically be possible to set a workflow state in the PJIRA that indicates that the translator is done and that I could throw an eye on the article? that would make it easier for the QA team and myself since I would then directly see what I could do
  • [10:10 SLT] Danica Linden: so, if you could maybe adjust it to German stylistically, that would be good
  • [10:11 SLT] Lore Lamont: yes danica thast what we are doing, we realized that switsching to the more formal german style makes it much easier
  • [10:11 SLT] Danica Linden: well, we do have "Translated"
  • [10:11 SLT] Lexie Linden: You could pick it up once it is set to translated...and change it to edit Tom?
  • [10:11 SLT] Lexie Linden: right
  • [10:11 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: i.e. Translation in Progress -> Free for Edit -> Translated ready for QA
  • [10:11 SLT] Danica Linden: so, when something is marked "Translated", it is a cue to go and edit
  • [10:11 SLT] Lore Lamont: although i liked to find a translation for Bob Griefer
  • [10:11 SLT] Danica Linden: is that good for you?
  • [10:12 SLT] Danica Linden: haha, I thought you may like finding the right German equivalent for Bob Griefer! :)
  • [10:12 SLT] Lexie Linden: lol
  • [10:12 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: I will just pick the translated ones into edit quick as they are done then, that would not prevent anyone to change it if I have a talk with the original translator
  • [10:12 SLT] Danica Linden: so, when something is translated, you take it and set it to "Editing"
  • [10:12 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: works too
  • [10:13 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: yeap
  • [10:13 SLT] Danica Linden: When you are done, you mark it as Edited
  • [10:13 SLT] Danica Linden: Then, I pick it up and go into QA
  • [10:13 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: and then QA can have their fun :P
  • [10:13 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: btw who is doing the QA?
  • [10:13 SLT] Danica Linden: I jumped the gun last week and put articles in QA that should have first gone to Editing
  • [10:13 SLT] Danica Linden: so it was me who probably confused you
  • [10:13 SLT] Lexie Linden: Hi Anonym3
  • [10:13 SLT] Danica Linden: so QA is actually done by a translation agency here in SF
  • [10:13 SLT] Anonym3: hey lexie
  • [10:14 SLT] Danica Linden: but I think your handle on terminology and understanding of the matter is really strong
  • [10:14 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: do they know alot about Second Life? I mean in some cases it really would not be easy for a translator to understand why we translated something the way we did, since this is Second Life™ and things go a bit different :)
  • [10:14 SLT] Danica Linden: so, not too much QA is needed. :)
  • [10:14 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: thanks danica
  • [10:15 SLT] Lexie Linden: : ))
  • [10:15 SLT] Danica Linden: I agree with you, Tom
  • [10:15 SLT] Danica Linden: so, the requirement for the agency is that they use SL
  • [10:15 SLT] Danica Linden: but I think you are an authority on the subject5
  • [10:15 SLT] Danica Linden: subject
  • [10:15 SLT] Lexie Linden: Hi Gellan
  • [10:16 SLT] Anonym9: hi
  • [10:16 SLT] Lexie Linden: So when they are looking at these..they do you have some knowledge of SL?
  • [10:16 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: I just would see it a bit as frustrating if a native speaker was paying alot attention of making the translation fit to the needs of Second Life™ and in the end he/she finds his/her content re-edited in the KB
  • [10:16 SLT] Lexie Linden: Thats good
  • [10:16 SLT] Danica Linden: Iwe are not allowing that
  • [10:17 SLT] Danica Linden: we only allow overall review
  • [10:17 SLT] Danica Linden: no worries
  • [10:17 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: ah ok, so it is just the standard punctuation review and glossary review... ok
  • [10:17 SLT] Danica Linden: yeah
  • [10:17 SLT] Danica Linden: and if you prefer certain glossary items, they have to keep it
  • [10:17 SLT] Lexie Linden: That makes sense
  • [10:17 SLT] Lore Lamont: that sounds pretty good
  • [10:18 SLT] Lexie Linden: Is there anything else about the project you all think needs a change..to make it run smoother or easier?
  • [10:18 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: they will notice that we "adjust" some things already now to be able to continue the translations... the glossary update will come once I went through all and everything (900+ lines is alot)
  • [10:18 SLT] Lexie Linden: (yes it is)
  • [10:18 SLT] Anonym4: Ah..... Here ypou are...
  • [10:18 SLT] Danica Linden: I was wondering if you may have time this week to look over the 6 articles I marked as critical
  • [10:18 SLT] Lore Lamont: Hi Anonym4
  • [10:18 SLT] Lexie Linden: Hi Anonym4 : )
  • [10:19 SLT] Lore Lamont: i think i might translate 2 or 3 of them this week
  • [10:19 SLT] Danica Linden: thank you so much! that is great
  • [10:19 SLT] Lexie Linden: Hi Sole
  • [10:19 SLT] Lore Lamont: yvw
  • [10:19 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: well I had some ideas about glossary requests and how to bundle them... I have a plan to create a site where the translator can enter the pending term with a proposal then I review it and either let it go through or make my own proposal and we can discuss it on my OH, once that is done I can add it as a glossary update for you
  • [10:19 SLT] Lexie Linden: Hi Saveme
  • [10:19 SLT] Danica Linden: Lore, you are doing the "How do I rent land to other people"
  • [10:20 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: I will be able to do some articles as well
  • [10:20 SLT] Anonym2: hi lexie hi all
  • [10:20 SLT] Anonym3: er hey save me
  • [10:20 SLT] Lore Lamont: yes I am
  • [10:20 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: hi Anonym
  • [10:20 SLT] Anonym1: Hi all
  • [10:20 SLT] Danica Linden: Tom, that would be great.
  • [10:20 SLT] Danica Linden: Also, if you would not mind editing, that would help as well
  • [10:20 SLT] Lore Lamont: its nearly finished Danica
  • [10:20 SLT] Anonym2: you are translating to european lenguages ??'
  • [10:20 SLT] Anonym4: For transltions, I am not that good..... My German is not that good.

  • [10:21 SLT] Anonym1: And as the Linden are almost German
  • [10:21 SLT] Danica Linden: she only was able to do the first paragraph and she suggested that someone takes the whole thing
  • [10:21 SLT] Danica Linden: it is marked as "In Translation" but it is really not
  • [10:21 SLT] Lexie Linden: Sole right now this is a particular project for German but we know there are more languages that need attention too
  • [10:21 SLT] Lore Lamont: i will have a look at it

  • [10:24 SLT] Danica Linden: so the 6 that we need with priority are: The About Land Window, How to use edit terrain tool, How do I rent land to other people, Creating Terrain Textures, How do I join & split land and FAQ from Beginning Landowners
  • [10:25 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: okies, should be makeable :P

  • [10:25 SLT] Danica Linden: thank you so much
  • [10:25 SLT] Anonym1: ok got it
  • [10:25 SLT] Anonym1: I try to make translations in some dialects
  • [10:25 SLT] Anonym1: so we can also serve the people who speak that
  • [10:26 SLT] Lore Lamont: Danica shall i assign Igel Hawks beginning landowners FAQ to me then?
  • [10:26 SLT] Danica Linden: yes, please, igel said that this week she does not have time
  • [10:26 SLT] Lore Lamont: okay

  • [10:26 SLT] Anonym1: for example here in Holland people speak some dialects and have problems with english
  • [10:26 SLT] Lexie Linden: ahh
  • [10:26 SLT] Danica Linden: Igel mentioned that next week will be easier
  • [10:27 SLT] Lexie Linden: Hi ChatBrat : )
  • [10:27 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: we'll back her this week and pack her next week :P
  • [10:27 SLT] Anonym1: And there is some questions from the canary islands
  • [10:27 SLT] Anonym6: Hi Lexie :)
  • [10:27 SLT] Anonym1: if we could also whistle it
  • [10:27 SLT] Danica Linden: nice, tom! :)
  • [10:27 SLT] Lexie Linden: : ))
  • [10:28 SLT] Lexie Linden: Are any of you working on other translation projects of your own?
  • [10:28 SLT] Anonym4: Not at this moment...
  • [10:28 SLT] Anonym1: Sole and me try to whistle FAQ in canary
  • [10:28 SLT] Anonym1: but she has problems to understand me
  • [10:28 SLT] Anonym1: but we work on it
  • [10:28 SLT] Lexie Linden: : ))
  • [10:28 SLT] Anonym2: sorry disturb. can we translate in that page ?
  • [10:29 SLT] Lexie Linden: Yes Sole..https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mentor_Linguist_Scribe_Translation_Project is open to all
  • [10:29 SLT] Anonym2: i would like do something of that
  • [10:29 SLT] Anonym2: goodddd
  • [10:29 SLT] Lexie Linden: The other is for German only at this time
  • [10:29 SLT] Anonym1: Sole, maybe you better whistle your question
  • [10:29 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: Well unfortunately Igel cannot be here, but as far as I am concerned she has shown interest in the translation of the blog lately and mentioned such on our last group meeting, with 0-6 postings per day it would be a hazzle to do synchronous translations but maybe that would be an idea for future ever since the Blog contains important information that aim at the customer relation and technical matters
  • [10:30 SLT] Anonym1: Ich werde mal kuken
  • [10:30 SLT] Lexie Linden: That would be alot Tom
  • [10:30 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: Lexie, not the past entries
  • [10:30 SLT] Anonym1: vielleicht ist das mogelich
  • [10:30 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: one could set a starting date
  • [10:30 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: and from then it gets translated
  • [10:30 SLT] Lexie Linden: Hi Oliver
  • [10:30 SLT] Lexie Linden: True
  • [10:30 SLT] Anonym8: hi
  • [10:31 SLT] Lexie Linden: Danica...is there anything in progress about getting the blog translated?
  • [10:31 SLT] Anonym1: can it be non smoking here please?
  • [10:31 SLT] Danica Linden: well, once we have the localization portal live, we can do it easier and quicker as we will have translation memory, automated handling of terminology, etc
  • [10:31 SLT] Anonym1: I have astma
  • [10:32 SLT] Danica Linden: but, I think Tom is right: we could also have a weekly digest version for Germany until such time that we can translate every blog
  • [10:32 SLT] Lexie Linden: That sounds good
  • [10:32 SLT] Lexie Linden: I'm sure it would be really helpful!
  • [10:32 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: oh btw... when I have remarks on UI Items, do you need the corresponding xml file to locate it easily?
  • [10:33 SLT] Danica Linden: you know, we've just coded this tool tip loc tool to view strings in context
  • [10:33 SLT] Danica Linden: and you'll be able to see the whole string
  • [10:33 SLT] Tom32 Anatine smiles
  • [10:34 SLT] Anonym1: Is there anybody who can translate my blog? Especially the Linden parts? http://savemeoh.wordpress.com/
  • [10:34 SLT] Danica Linden: so instead of an xml file, you'll be able to just send me problematic strings
  • [10:34 SLT] Lore Lamont thinks she should smile too, even if she doesn´t know what that cool tool is ;)
  • [10:34 SLT] Danica Linden: but I'llk take xml files too
  • [10:34 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: I only meant the file location :P
  • [10:34 SLT] Lexie Linden: Sounds like a good tool to have
  • [10:34 SLT] Lexie Linden: lol
  • [10:34 SLT] Danica Linden: yeah, that would be fine
  • [10:34 SLT] Lexie Linden: Hi Kizzy
  • [10:35 SLT] Danica Linden: absolutely
  • [10:35 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: okies thanks again
  • [10:35 SLT] Danica Linden: you know, with the new loc portal, we will display translatable text in a web format one string at the time, so the CT project of SW will become pretty easy if you only have like 5 minutes to spend
  • [10:36 SLT] Danica Linden: say: you only want to translate a couple of strings, you'll be able to do that very easily
  • [10:36 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: can't wait to see it run :P
  • [10:36 SLT] Danica Linden: I know, me too!!!!!
  • [10:36 SLT] Lexie Linden: Do any of you have ideas on how you think is best to promote the project to bring in even more translators?
  • [10:36 SLT] Tom32 Anatine pokes web-dev team
  • [10:36 SLT] Anonym1: Anonym3, stop smoking please
  • [10:36 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: post a blog about it
  • [10:37 SLT] Anonym2: put advices in the main page
  • [10:37 SLT] Anonym5: throw me out a notecard and I will blog it on the MM website
  • [10:37 SLT] Lexie Linden: all good ideas

  • [10:46 SLT] Anonym1: what he said?
  • [10:46 SLT] Lexie Linden: I think some Mentors do that when they need to help someone and no translator is available
  • [10:47 SLT] Anonym3: well google has the thing where you paste who swathes of a document
  • [10:47 SLT] Anonym3: maybe the whole thing but i dont trust what comes out

  • [10:47 SLT] Anonym3: heck if i remember savemeh
  • [10:47 SLT] Anonym6: simbotic*
  • [10:47 SLT] Anonym4: I strongly disadvice a Babler or equal for translating Pages of text.... They simply cannot keep up.
  • [10:47 SLT] Lexie Linden: Agreed Anonym4
  • [10:48 SLT] Anonym6: true, Anonym4
  • [10:48 SLT] Lexie Linden: You will get some of it correct but much of it not
  • [10:48 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: the trick about in world translators is to create short sentences of simple structure since usually they cannot handle a highly complex grammatical structure
  • [10:48 SLT] Anonym2: all those pages are a disaster.. imposible understand a word when i try to use those pages
  • [10:48 SLT] Lexie Linden: Exactly Tom
  • [10:48 SLT] Danica Linden: exactly
  • [10:48 SLT] Anonym1: but translators should be checked first if they are not secret agents in disguise
  • [10:49 SLT] Anonym3: that has been my experience sole
  • [10:49 SLT] Anonym6: i was talking about Babel Fish: http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url
  • [10:49 SLT] Lexie Linden: ahh
  • [10:49 SLT] Anonym2: yes.. i know jumpy
  • [10:49 SLT] Anonym2: i use babel fish also chat

  • [10:49 SLT] Anonym3: i have one i keep meaning to delete lmao
  • [10:49 SLT] Anonym1: I luckely speak all languages
  • [10:49 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: even the professional web translation services that are based on machina cannot handle structures that contain of more than 22 words, the big advantage would be that you get alternate proposals but that still would require a basic knowledge in the foreign language grammar
  • [10:49 SLT] Lexie Linden: So what is the best in world translator now? Opinions?
  • [10:49 SLT] Anonym3: luckely u do :p
  • [10:50 SLT] Anonym1: So when a German curse you again call me
  • [10:50 SLT] Anonym7: simbolic
  • [10:50 SLT] Anonym5: gtans is good
  • [10:50 SLT] Anonym2: the problem is most the slangs. or the short cuts that normaly use in english
  • [10:50 SLT] Anonym6: i use simbotic, Lexie
  • [10:50 SLT] Anonym2: thats imposible translate it.
  • [10:50 SLT] Anonym4: For In-World, I use the Symbolic translator... For pages of text, I do only Languages which I can do best, and thats only 2...
  • [10:50 SLT] Anonym3: it is
  • [10:50 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: I usually do not use inworld solutions, I stick to: http://www.tranexp.com:2000/Translate/result.shtml
  • [10:50 SLT] Lexie Linden: ok..interesting
  • [10:50 SLT] Anonym3: hopely the employees at LL will cut back on the slang in their official docs
  • [10:51 SLT] Anonym3: :P
  • [10:51 SLT] Lexie Linden: I think the official documents are worded pretty careful these days with translation in mind
  • [10:51 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: and for translations as for Knowledge Base it always helps to look at http://dict.cc or the online version of the Oxford Dictionary
  • [10:51 SLT] Lexie Linden: good info!
  • [10:51 SLT] Anonym1: I am a walking translator, so everybody is free to use me
