This article explains how to set up a space for your inworld classroom in Second Life that's accessible only to your students, depending on whether you've chosen to use a Private Region or a parcel on the mainland.

{{KBnote|Have you not yet created a Group for your students? Groups:
* Have implications on permissions and access settings
* Can be used to send notices and share a communication channel

==Private Regions (islands)==

Private Regions in Second Life® (often referred to as "islands") offer the greatest amount of flexibility in terms of configuring accessibility options. Private Regions provide Region-wide access control settings, allowing the Private Region owner to configure accessibility permissions for the entirety of the Region, as well as the individual parcels of land that make it up. Furthermore, because Private Regions aren't connected to the Second Life mainland Regions, you can dictate that your Region not have an immediately-neighboring Region, providing an added privacy option when you decide where to place your Private Region inworld. Once you have ownership of your Private Region, consider following these steps to configure your Region's security options, which will turn off access to your Private Region to everyone except groups of your choice:

# Make sure you're standing on your Private Region.
# From the menus at the top of the Second Life viewer, select '''World > Region/Estate'''. The Region/Estate window opens.
# Click the '''Estate''' tab and configure the following options:
#* '''Public Access''' - Leave this unchecked; doing so will allow only those on the access lists to enter your Private Region.
#* '''Allowed groups''' - Use the '''Add''' function in this window to add the group you want to allow access to the Region.
# You may also choose to configure the following options, which help grant administrative controls to trusted Residents and further limit access to the Region:
#* '''Estate Managers''' - Residents who are Estate Managers have access to region/estate controls; this list should be reserved only to administrators.
#* '''Allowed Residents''' - If there are Residents to whom you want to grant region access who aren't in the groups that were granted Region access, add their names here.
#* '''Banned Residents''' - Residents on this list will not be able to enter the Private Region. This list is typically added to on an as-needed basis.

==Mainland parcel controls==

When seeking a secure space, mainland Second Life offers an alternative to Private Region ownership, with some considerations. The Second Life mainland is made up of many interconnecting Regions that are managed by Linden Lab. This means that you'll have configuration options for your parcel, but will have far less control over the rest of the Region, including such aspects as who your neighbors are, what content exists outside of your parcel, and who's able to visit nearby parcels. Once you have ownership of your parcel, consider following these steps to configure your parcel's security options:

# Make sure you're standing on your parcel.
# From the menus at the top of the Second Life viewer, select '''World > About Land'''. The About Land window opens.
# Use the '''Group''' option in the General tab to set the land to the group that contains the students or Residents to whom you want to grant access to the parcel.
# Click the Access tab and configure the following options:
#* '''Access to this parcel''' - Uncheck '''Public Access'''.
#* '''Allow Group Access''' - Check this to enable your group of students or Residents to have access to the parcel.
#* '''Allowed Residents''' - If there are Residents you want to grant parcel access who aren't in the groups that were granted parcel access, add their names here.
#* '''Banned Residents''' - Residents on this list will not be able to enter the parcel. This list is typically added to on an as-needed basis.
