What is an alternate viewer?

The primary viewer for Second Life is the official Second Life Viewer, available on the main Second Life Downloads page. That page also links to the latest beta, the version next in line to become the next released Viewer.

The viewers below provide alternate means of accessing Second Life.

KBnote.png Note: If you experience problems using any of the viewers below, you may be asked to try to replicate the problem using the officially supported SL Viewer release.

Second Life Project Viewers

A Second Life Project Viewer is an early release from a Viewer development team that provides a preview of one or more new features. See the linked project pages for the status of the feature and instructions on how to provide feedback based on your use of the feature.

Direct Delivery

KBnote.png Note: Use of the Direct Delivery feature is currently restricted to the Aditi Test Grid, and is not accessible via the Main Grid. This restriction applies to both Project and Development viewers.
Released August 26, 2011 - Direct Delivery Project Viewer

Direct Delivery is a new, more convenient system designed to improve the delivery of Second Life Marketplace products to recipients, as well as help sellers more efficiently list their products on the Marketplace. For more information, please see the Direct Delivery FAQ.

Installers: Windows | Macintosh | Linux

KBnote.png Note: Bugs founds by those participating in the Direct Delivery Beta are tracked in a private Jira project.

Important Reminder: Development builds are untested, and while they are up-to-the-hour builds of work in progress, they are unsupported and potentially risky to use. The Direct Delivery public source code can be found in http://bitbucket.org/leslie/viewer-dd

Mesh Import

While mesh is now available in SL Viewer v3.0.0 on the Main Grid, we plan to release further improvements to mesh import and the edit/build panel soon. You can download SL Viewer v3.0.0 from the Second Life Viewer downloads page

KBnote.png Note: There is a fee associated with uploading Mesh models, so you may wish to avoid spending Linden dollars while experimenting with uploading models by using the preview grid, also called "Aditi". The preview grid allows you to test new features and experiment with potentially costly designs in a safe environment, using a copy of your Second Life account. Actions taken on the preview grid do not affect either your inventory or L$ balance on Second Life's main grid.

Second Life Development Viewer

The Second Life Development Viewer is the very latest build of features and fixes that are on the way to being in the next Beta release. Every build of the main development tree is made available for you to try as soon as it's built. The Snowstorm Project page has information on the process of creating these builds and how you can contribute to them as either a developer or a tester.

Third-Party viewers

Many Second Life developers, outside of Linden Lab, offer customized Second Life viewers. Please note that Linden Lab does not support third-party viewers.

See Third Party Viewer Directory for a listing of third-party viewers created by developers who have certified that they comply with the Policy on Third Party Viewers.

Detailed information about many viewers in the Third Party Viewer Directory may be found in the Resident-maintained Downloads article.
