Second Life requires that all Residents be 16 years or older, with the exception of 13-15 year old Residents that are brought into Second Life by a Sponsoring Institution, as stated in section 2.2 of our Terms of Service.

We take the problem of underage Residents very seriously. If you find someone under 16 years of age who shouldn't be on the Main Grid, here's what you need to do:

  1. First, make sure they've actually admitted their underage status within Second Life, in their own words in chat. For example, "I'm 14" is clear evidence. We can't accept hearsay or rumors, so "I heard that so-and-so is a young teen" or "That griefer behaves like they don't belong here!" don't count. "Confessions" on external instant messaging programs or any areas outside of Second Life itself can't be investigated either.
  2. Inworld, use Help > Report Abuse to bring up the abuse reporter tool.
  3. Click Select category and choose Age.
  4. Enter the required information as indicated, and please be specific. If you recently heard an underage admission in chat, copy-and-paste the snippet into the Details field. If it happened earlier and you don't have a chat record, just recite as much as you remember to help us know what to look for.
  5. Click the Report Abuse button and our Abuse Team will investigate it and take appropriate action. Thanks for your help.

Accounts found to be 12 years or younger are too young to be on any version of Second Life, we are sorry but you will have to wait to join the Second Life community.

Underage reporting in SL

Second Life Residents often file abuse reports on other avatars because they suspect that the person they are reporting is underage. We read these reports and investigate whether there's any validity to the claim. If we find any information that leads us to believe that the report filed may be valid, we put the account in question on hold and request age verification by email.

In order to get the account off hold, the person with the account must provide a legible copy of a government-issued identification document (state ID, driver's license, passport, military ID, birth certificate) that clearly includes both their name and date of birth. This is the only type of identification acceptable for establishing age eligibility. You may send your ID via email ( by replying to the initial email sent to you regarding the request), fax, or mail.

The age verification process is usually resolved within the week. We do what we can to keep your accounts valid and active in Second Life.

If you're between the ages of 13-15 and somehow ended up on the 16+ area of Second Life (or 16-17 and ending up on the 18+ areas of Second Life), please contact Support and let us know that you'd like to be moved to the correct location. If you think it would be funny, you can also file an Abuse Report against yourself, with your name and age. Your honesty is appreciated!
