Timing

When will Teen Second Life close?

It will close in early January 2011

When will the minimum age on the Main Grid be lowered to 16, and when will the transition of Residents and organizations that serve them on Teen Second Life occur?

On, or before, December 31, 2010. All regions and eligible accounts will have been transferred before mid-January 2011.

Individual teen account transfer to the Main Grid

What will Residents under 18 years old have access to on the Main Grid?

Second Life Residents 16-17 years old will only be able to access regions and search results with a General maturity rating. Residents 13-15 years old will only be able to access Second Life through an affiliated organization and will be restricted to the estate of that organization. These estates will be private, and only avatars approved by that organization will be able to enter. These Residents will not be able to search the Grid or purchase items from the Marketplace.

What will be transferred when Residents under 18 years old are promoted to the Main Grid?

All inventory, groups, friends, and land for 16-and-17-year old Residents will be transferred. Accounts and content for 13-15 year old students associated with educational and nonprofit organizations on the Teen Grid will be transferred to the Main Grid, where these teens will be limited to the hosting organizations’ estates. All accounts and content for 13-15 year olds will be preserved (avatars, inventory, etc.) so that these Residents can easily join the Main Grid when they turn 16, or if we are able to serve younger Residents more broadly in the future.

What will accounts have to do in order to transfer?

There is nothing that users will need to do to transfer. Linden Lab will handle everything for both the 16+ year olds that will continue using Second Life, as well as for the 13-15 year olds when they turn 16 and will once again have access to their accounts. It should be a seamless transition on the users' side.

What happens to the current Teen Grid land?

All land will become part of the Main Grid, while staying in its current location on the Second Life map. Land ownership will continue as it is. However, for 13-15 year olds, please note that since your account will be on hold you will no longer be able to pay tier, and therefore you should take action to sell, or give up, your land prior to January.

Will adults have access to Teen Grid land after transfer?

Yes, adults will have access to all public Teen Grid land after transfer. However, as you can now, it is possible to place privacy limits on parcels that you are renting.

What happens to inventory?

All inventory will remain as is during the transfer process. 16-17 year olds will retain all inventory when they transfer, and 13-15 year olds will retain all inventory when their accounts are placed on hold.

Are there actions that 13-15 year olds should take prior to January?

We recommend that 13-15 year old accounts cash out any remaining inventory balances and sell or give up their land prior to January. At the time of transition, if you still own land in Teen Second Life, it will be returned to Governor Linden and resold; you will not get a refund. You should strongly consider selling your land as you prepare for the transition. Otherwise, there is nothing that 13-15 year olds need to do.

Are Linden Homes available to users under 18?

At this point, no. 16-17 year old users will continue to be able to have the other benefits of becoming premium Second Life users. However, they will not be able to access Linden Homes until they turn 18.

Organization (NPOs, educational institutions, etc) transfers to the Main Grid

What will happen to accounts and content held by organizations on TSL?

For organizations serving the Teen Grid population, land, avatars, and inventory for these Residents will be transferred automatically.

Will accounts that are currently limited to our estate be affected?

All accounts that are limited to your organization's estate will be transferred. Avatars that are limited to an estate are not able to search, leave that estate or purchase items from the Marketplace.

What will organizations have to do in order to transfer?

There will be no necessary action on part of the organizations to have their land and accounts transferred.

Will anything change regarding access to our estates?

All organizations serving users under the age of 16 must keep their estates private, with 13-15 year old accounts limited to these estates. Access to the estate by users 16 or older will be at the discretion of the owner of that estate.

Will all avatars be limited to our estates, similar to the current requirements on Teen Second Life?

All users under the age of 16 must remain limited to that estate. Access to the regions by other users (including organizational staff, etc) will remain at the discretion of the estate owner. These authorized users can be allowed onto the estate by using estate privacy and whitelist features.

Where will the regions be located after the transfer?

Locations of the transferred regions will remain the same. These regions can be moved, at the request of the estate owner, for a fee.

Can new organizations that wish to serve under 16 users join Second Life?

Yes, welcome to Second Life. To serve under 16 users, you will need to be able to limit them to your new Second Life estate. To do this, you must use the Registration API, create your island in Second Life, and bring teens onto this island through your own website. You can form groups that include teens and IM and exchange objects with teens who come in through your RegAPI. However, in this case, these accounts will NOT be able to leave your island and visit other spaces, search within Second Life or purchase from the Marketplace. In this "closed island" model, you can form groups, IM, and exchange objects with them; but all these activities are limited to your island.
