Make a movie in SL

Before you begin you may need the following:

  • Windows Media 8.0 and 9.0 codecs (if you don't already have them). You can search these at: [1].
  • Video editing software


  1. Log into Second Life
  2. Set your movie resolution.
    1. From the 'File' menu, select 'Set Window Size' and '800x600'.
    2. IMPORTANT: your Second Life window will be reduced significantly.
    3. During filming, you must leave the SL window at this size on your screen.
  3. Hide the User Interface.
    1. Press Ctrl-Alt-1 to hide the UI so that it won't appear in your movie.
  4. Start your movie.
    1. Press Ctrl-Shift-A to start the movie (this command also stops filming).
  5. Pick a place to save your movie.
    1. IMPORTANT: select or create a folder NOT on your desktop; for example, on Windows-based machines, any folder on your C: drive will work.
    2. Once you have your folder selected, click Open.
    3. Click Save.
  6. Choose video compression.
    1. Select Full Frames/Uncompressed.
    2. IMPORTANT: this will generate a large uncompressed video file - about 1 GB per minute - which you will need to compress during or after editing. OR
    3. Select Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec.
    4. Click OK. Filming begins.
  7. Capture your raw footage.
    1. To stop filming, press Ctrl-Shift-A.
  8. Edit your movie using your choice of video editing application.
