SL Certification Roles

There are six roles identified so far in the SL Certification Project:

  • Wiki Topic Moderator
  • Wiki Topic Contributor
  • Wiki User
  • Project Opinionator
  • Education Course Designer and Instructor
  • Certification Test Designer and Certifier

Wiki Topic Moderator

The Moderator Starts a Page for their Assigned Topic and keeps it Sorted (organized for accuracy, clarity and usability).

This is a Thankless Task but Highly Satisfying. The moderators work with Hunter Benazzi, Sitearm Madonna, and Glenn Linden, AND the Contributors, and keep the pages sorted in usable overall order and content. Moderator efforts will be criticized by Opinionators (see below) either deliberately or inadvertantly. However, Moderators are paid ten times as much as Contributors (ten times nothing).

Wiki Topic Contributor

The Contributor Adds Useful Material to any Topic Page they want, with the Understanding that the Moderator will keep sorting it over time. This is a thankless task but... oh nm see above. Contributors are paid ten times as much as Opinionators.

Wiki User

The User says, "Thank goodness for this material I can use it, or ideas I get from it, imMEdiately in my school / business / self education program etc." and then dOEs use it. Blessed are the Users for they shall Benefit from the SL Certification Project in happy Ignorance of the Bending Over Backward Hard Work of the moderators and contributors. But we love them anyway.

Project Opinionator

We are aLL Opinionators at the start. It is the Default Role.

GOOD Opinionators:

  • Add specific suggestions on the Discussion sections of Topic Pages. (Every wiki content page has a parallel discussion page to put comments on)
  • Say supportive things like, "I like that, that's great!"
  • Are listened to more and more as their merit becomes evident

BAD Opinionators:

  • Say things like, "I don't like that, that's Wrong!", without offering specific solutions.
  • Are listened to or ignored by others as needed.

Education Course Course Designer and Instructor (SL SKILLS SCHOOLS)

The Course Designer and Instructor (who already exist in many SL Skills Schools) prepare and teach courses either Instructor- or Hud-Led to impart skills to trainees.

It is expected that the SL Cert Project will provide many opportunities for new courses to be offered by SL Skills Schools.

Certification Test Designer and Certifier (SL SKILLS CERTIFIERS)

The Certification Test Designer and Certifier (who DO NOT YET EXIST in SL) prepare and give performance based testing to certifiee candidates, and give them documentation if they past.

It is expected that SL Residents will become the FIRST Certification Test Designers and Certifiers and that they will likely often also be Education Course Designers and Instructors at first ("wear multiple hats").

It is expected that the SL Cert Project will provide many opportunities for new certifications to be offered by SL Skills Certifiers.

Issues

Conflicts of Interest?

Is it possible for a Bad School to give Bad Certifications to its students? Yes and No.

In the short run, since NObody knows yet who to trust for certification, it is a wide open field.

HowEVer, as with other efforts in Second Life, savvy clients and users know that, "by our actions we are known".

Good Schools can give Good Certifications where "Good" is determined by clients and users. We don't yet have an overseeing body OTHer than the SL Cert Project Team.

It is predictable that over time, Linden Lab will take over the SL Certification process using its own staff or a paid disinterested third party. In fact this is arguably a "definition of success" for the SL Cert Project, to get things moved along far enough to make them official. For those who want it to get official sooner, it is recommended that they look at and apply for the Solution Provider Gold Program first.

Disclaimer

SL Cert Roles is the creation of Fellow Residents And Developers Like You and does NOT reflect the official stance of Linden Lab. They just hope we get something useful done that many will benefit by, within this lifetime.
