Blocking Unsupported Viewers
Mandatory Upgrades
After the 30 day phase-out period has elapsed after a new viewer release, we will not allow those unsupported viewers to connect to the Grid. Residents using unsupported versions of the viewer who attempt to login will be prompted to upgrade to the latest version.
Mandatory upgrades may be necessary to to correct an urgent security issue or policy change.  Under such circumstances, all Residents are required to update their Viewer to the newest supported version. Mandatory upgrades are only employed when absolutely necessary.

This accommodates the current upgrade behavior of most Residents. And given the rhythm of viewer releases, it means that even the most upgrade-averse Residents will need to install new software approximately every six months.

Mandatory Upgrades
Mandatory upgrades (for an urgent security issue or policy changes) which require all Residents to upgrade to the latest version of the viewer in order to operate correctly, will override this policy. However, such mandatory upgrades are only to be employed when absolutely necessary.

----

Rollout
We will roll this policy out with the 1.22 release of the viewer, but we will provide an additional grace period of 30 days before we start to enforce it.  After the 60 days, Residents with viewer 1.20 will not be allowed to connect and will be prompted to upgrade to a newer viewer. By that time, the population of 1.20 should be approximately 1% of the total.

Viewer Support Policy

As described in T's March 2009 blog post, our policy is to support the newest Official Viewer, the previous Official Viewer, and the last released Beta or Release Candidate Viewer - e.g. Viewer 2 (2.1.0), Viewer 1.23 (1.23.5), and the last Beta version, 2.1.1 Beta.

Deprecation Policy

Because we support only the current version and one version back, sixty (60) days after the release of a new official Viewer, the oldest Second Life Release will be deprecated. At that time, residents attempting to login using the deprecated version will be required to update to the newest Second Life Release. Should you wish to use a supported Viewer other than the newest one, download links have been provided below.

Note: At this time, Viewer 1.23 remains an exception to the above-stated policy, as there are no immediate plans to deprecate it.

Supported Viewer Versions

We currently support the two latest Viewer 2 generation Second Life Releases (2.1.0 and 2.0.1), the 1.23 Second Life Release (1.23.5), and Second Life Beta Viewer 2.1.1 (207725).
