I believe I’ve found what this option renders: it’s kind of a primitive ground; it’s completely flat and horizontal (no hills or other irregular terrain — that’s what SurfacePatch is for), displayed at zero elevation as just a plain gray surface with blank texture.
To see it:
#(Enable the Ground option on the Advanced menu > Rendering > Types submenu.)
#Either disable as many other Rendering options as necessary, or go to the edge of the world.
#*Beyond the edge of the world, there is no “ground” of the kind whose rendering is enabled by the SurfacePatch option (and of course there’s nothing else either), so this other, primitive kind of “ground” is revealed, whereas normally it’s hidden under everything else, especially SurfacePatch ground.
#Disable the Ground option again to see the difference. — Albert Zerundi 23:28, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

I could use some help with this page, many of these items are obscure and known only to elite hackers and Linden programmers :-) DanielRavenNest Noe 22:05, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

I added some more options where I were sure what they did and sent a mail to the SLDev mailing list. Let's cross fingers that some of them jump in :-) Otherwise, it might be good to poke Rand Linden on this. He seems to be the right one.

I saw your email to SLDev. I have added a few and once I jump on SL to brush up on a few more I should be able to get at least half of the rest as well. --Dante Tucker 00:33, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Advanced menu > Rendering > Types > Ground

> > Ground - not sure what it renders but disabling it has not effect other than speeding up the client. -spitfire clary

I believe I’ve found what this option renders: it’s kind of a primitive ground; it’s completely flat and horizontal (no hills or other irregular terrain — that’s what SurfacePatch is for), displayed at zero elevation as just a plain gray surface with blank texture. To see it:

  1. (Enable the Ground option on the Advanced menu > Rendering > Types submenu.)
  2. Either disable as many other Rendering options as necessary, or go to the edge of the world.
    • Beyond the edge of the world, there is no “ground” of the kind whose rendering is enabled by the SurfacePatch option (and of course there’s nothing else either), so this other, primitive kind of “ground” is revealed, whereas normally it’s hidden under everything else, especially SurfacePatch ground.
  3. Disable the Ground option again to see the difference. — Albert Zerundi 23:28, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
