If the exact figures for what constitutes a byte and how they compile (potentially multiply) together are known I thought it might be nice to show them. I encounter the word so often that knowing what it refers to would be great. -- Eddy (talk|contribs) 19:28, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Tests in Jan 2013

Tests in January 2013 show that messages containing only ASCII characters are truncated consistently to 1024 characters for llSay, and 1175 characters for llInstantMessage.

A message of all 'á' characters truncated at 512 characters (1024 Bytes assuming 2 Bytes per character) and InstantMessage at 587 and a half characters (last appears as '?') (i.e. 1175 Bytes assuming 2 Bytes per character)
