The DG Grid Flyer Network

As part of the development of the DG Grid Flyer Teleport System, several standards have been created and methods developed that should be shared with users and developers alike. This page (and the related sub-pages) will detail the various aspects of the Grid Flyer Network, how it relates to the operation of the DG Grid Flyer and other additional details that may be pertinent.

Overview of the DG Grid Flyer

The DG Grid Flyer is a member of the same family as the DG Flyer and DG InstaFlyer Teleport Systems. It provides rapid and accurate point to point teleporting within a single Sim (or "Region" in Second Life parlance) but also adds the ability to teleport to any other location within the Second Life Grid. Operation and installation of the Grid Flyer is essentially the same with the DG Flyer and InstaFlyer, however there are additional functions provided by the Grid-Wide capabilities.

Features of the DG Grid Flyer include:

  • Multiseat Teleport - Up to six people (1 Driver and 5 Passengers) may TP at the same time
Driver determines the destination by menu selection
Driver's permissions are used to determine access control
Intra-Sim teleports happen automatically as soon as the Driver makes the selection
Inter-Sim teleports require each person to click a specially formatted "TP Link" displayed in their Local Chat window
  • Real-time "Live" updating of destination locations
Destinations are marked by a Grid Flyer Location Ring or MiniRing
Rings may be added, removed and relocated as desired without modification to system configuration
All teleports use the current location of the Rings, even between Sims
Rings may be "Locked" to prevent display or selection by unauthorized drivers
  • Single Network Controller supports up to 5 Networks
One Network Controller needed per Sim for every 5 Networks (regardless of Network Owner)
Single-Prim Network Controller serves as local Sim controller and Grid-wide Controller using HTTP Server technology
  • Rez On Demand Flyer Platform
Platforms are rezzed on demand and delivered to the requestor
Platforms automatically "Die" when TP is complete or when unused for one minute
  • HUD Controllable
Low-Lag Heads Up Display (HUD) can be used to summon Flyer Platform or TP to other Sims
Network Selection via HUD
Last 9 Grid Destinations saves as "Favorites" for rapid return to most recent locations
Automatic detection and selection of active Grid Flyer or InstaFlyer Networks upon entry to a Sim

Grid Flyer Networks

Unlike the InstaFlyer Network which is limited to a single Sim, the Grid Flyer Networks may exist on more than one Sim. Each Network is owned by a single person and the Network Name must be unique in the entire Second Life Grid. When a Grid Flyer system is purchased, the recipient receives 5 "Network Credits" that allow them to create up to 5 Networks. Additional Network Credits may be purchased either individually or in 5-Packs.

Network Security

Grid Flyer Networks may be designated either "Public", "Secure" or "Private". Public Networks may be added to any Grid Flyer Network Controller regardless of the ownership of the controller. Private Networks may only be added to a Network Controller that is owned by the Network Owner. Secure Networks require the entry of a special "Access Key" before they may be added to a Network Controller that is not owned by the Network Owner.

This concept needs more work. How are we going to secure a Network and how can we ensure that the key won't escape into the wild?
