Transcript of CG Linden's office hours:

[8:01] Media Hax: .. so I can make that call in LSL ? and a real tp occurs?
[8:02] Opensource Obscure: ... no, you have to click it in the chat history
[8:02] CG Linden: . Good morning :)
[8:02] Opensource Obscure: ... i usually put it in chat / IM messages, with a notice "click here"
[8:02] WolfPup Lowenhar: .... morning CG
[8:02] Media Hax: .. hmmm.. for some reado I thought app were accessable
[8:02] CG Linden: . or afternoon
[8:02] ZOE Popstar: ..... Good morning
[8:02] Teagan Linden: ...... Morning CG!
[8:02] HALEY Salomon: ....... gmorning
[8:02] Amber DeCuir: ........ Hi:-)
[8:02] Arawn Spitteler: ......... Blessed is your well ballanced aftermorning.
[8:02] Imaze Rhiano: .......... good evening
[8:03] Arawn Spitteler: ......... Guten Nach-Kafe
[8:03] XLR8RRICK Hudson: ........... Good Morning CG
[8:03] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ hey, Teagan!
[8:03] CG Linden: . Hi Teagan!
[8:03] Chua Gunawan: ............. may your spirit get a full body rubdown.
[8:03] XLR8RRICK Hudson: ........... Full House today
[8:03] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ it's been ages. how are you?
[8:03] CG Linden: . rez rez rez
[8:03] Teagan Linden: ...... Aargle! ltns! Been good :)
[8:03] Teagan Linden: ...... Wow, I can't type today
[8:03] XLR8RRICK Hudson: ........... Hiya Teagan
[8:03] Teagan Linden: ...... Hi XL!
[8:03] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ I miss the old g-team meetings.
[8:03] Teagan Linden: ...... Yeah, me too :/
[8:04] Arawn Spitteler could do an on-line rubdown, but has a hard time holding people still.
[8:04] WolfPup Lowenhar: .... morning aargle
[8:04] Amber DeCuir: ........ LOL
[8:04] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ hello,Wolfpup
[8:04] Media Hax: .. ya, the h team meetings just arent the same....
[8:04] Amber DeCuir: ........ No dragon claws this week
[8:04] CG Linden: . I think this is a record....
[8:04] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ hey CG... whatcha go for us today?
[8:04] CG Linden counts avs
[8:04] Lamorna Proctor: .............. good sometime-in-a-24-hour-period to everyone
[8:05] Opensource Obscure: ... with regard to permissions, CG: you explained us that the best way to set them is doing it on objects that are rezzed in world, then take them into inventory.
[8:05] Opensource Obscure: ... does this apply to scripts too?
[8:05] CG Linden: . yes, the main reason I say that is because that is the best way to ensure that the "folded" or aggregate permissions are "baked" correctly
[8:06] CG Linden: . btw, there was an error in my explanation last Tuesday....
[8:06] Aargle Zymurgy sniffs his pits and wonders why Lamorna moved over
[8:06] Media Hax: .. mmmmmm... makes me think of cookies......
[8:06] Lamorna Proctor: .............. lol
[8:06] CG Linden: . This "F" here means "folded" permissions
[8:06] WolfPup Lowenhar: .... open you cna do scripts in you inventory berrte cause if you put a no mod/cpy/tans script into an object inworld it would over ride the objects settings
[8:06] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ I thought it stood for something else
[8:07] Lamorna Proctor kicks Aargle
[8:07] CG Linden: . so these are the "effective" permissions which take into consideration the content
[8:07] Arawn Spitteler: ......... Current Effective, or ext user effective?
[8:07] Lamorna Proctor: .............. wow, these meetings are getting popular
[8:07] Arawn Spitteler: ......... We have a hard time alpha testing our perm assignments.
[8:07] Opensource Obscure: ... so, when we see 'F:VMCT' we know that an object is fullperms as well as all its contents. right?
[8:08] CG Linden: . errr, that's an inference, yes....
[8:08] Lamorna Proctor: .............. but i suppose it just means the last time it worked them out
[8:08] Aargle Zymurgy almost subliminally tries to reorganize the letters for a good Lexis score
[8:08] CG Linden: . usually the folded permissions will be more restrictive than the object permissions, if your content is nore restrictive
[8:09] CG Linden: . in my example here, the folded permissions are exactly like the object permissiomns, since I just used a simple cube as an example
[8:09] Johnitta Yarrowroot: ............... ???Hello Hello???
[8:09] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ I've now taken to providing seperate scripts/objects should folding get a bit complex
[8:10] CG Linden: . hello
[8:10] Lamorna Proctor: .............. there are no group permissions on that slide. is that because it is not set to "Share with group"
[8:10] Flos Spore: ................ hello all
[8:10] CG Linden: . yes
[8:10] Lamorna Proctor: .............. ok, gotcha
[8:11] CG Linden: . so sharing with group is one of these things.... there are actially two modes
[8:11] SLB Wirefly: ................. hello
[8:11] Aargle Zymurgy listens carefully to this bit.
[8:11] CG Linden: . if you check of share with group, _anyone_ in the group can manipulate that object
[8:11] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ is that despite any other perms?
[8:12] CG Linden: . it will be as if they are the owner
[8:12] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ for example, no-mod script, but I've shared with group, so my partners can mod anyways
[8:12] Arawn Spitteler: ......... They woul dhave most of your perms
[8:12] CG Linden: . I think so.
[8:12] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ "most" or "all"?
[8:12] CG Linden: . Simon, correct me if I;m wrong
[8:12] XLR8RRICK Hudson: ........... is that Set for Sale too
[8:12] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ ok, this bit is good...... I have really been doing this the hard way all along
[8:12] Simon Linden: .................. Perm's give me a headache, but I think you're right
[8:13] CG Linden: . I would have to try it out, but that is the intent I believe
[8:13] Lamorna Proctor: .............. if they give you guys a headache, imagine what's it's like for us :)
[8:13] CG Linden: . oh look at that, twins :)
[8:13] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ though< i'm noticing, changing group once it's rezzed doesn't seem to work. you have to re-rez
[8:13] Simon Linden: .................. But I think the higher level advice is perfect - get the object set up in-world the way you want, then take into inventory
[8:14] CG Linden: . Zoe and queen :)
[8:14] Media Hax: .. I think you have to open the script independantly first
[8:14] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ internal scripts, yes... you have to set those to share
[8:14] CG Linden: . now sharing with a whole group can be too much, so later, we introduced the concept of "deeding" to group
[8:14] Lamorna Proctor: .............. i thought you had to set each script in a scripted object to share with group as well, if you want to work on a project together with someone
[8:14] ZOE Popstar: ..... :-:-)) who us?
[8:14] CG Linden: . I am pretty sure you do
[8:15] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ yes, Lam, youdo. I know that for sure.
[8:15] CG Linden: . so, to get fine grained control ver who in your group may do what, you need to deed to group
[8:16] CG Linden: . to get to that point, you need to first check share with group, then the button to deed comes alive
[8:16] CG Linden: . press it, then unshare with group
[8:16] CG Linden: . yes, not optmimal
[8:16] Media Hax: .. yes, if you have rights to deed in group perms..lol
[8:16] CG Linden: . and then you need to go into the group tab (assuming you are the group owner)
[8:16] CG Linden: . (or officer may be enoiugn too)
[8:17] CG Linden: . and then you can add roles with specific permissions
[8:17] CG Linden: . sorry, I don't have slides for that
[8:17] CG Linden: . but Torley has a video I think
[8:17] Media Hax: .. <---- imagines the slides
[8:17] CG Linden: . it's a bit shallow on that subject, but it hows the interface
[8:17] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ I've got an odd question related to that......
[8:17] CG Linden: . ok
[8:18] Lamorna Proctor: .............. it would be nice to have an authoritative detailed wiki article on all this
[8:18] CG Linden: . WorkingOnIt
[8:18] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ if my alt has a notecard which is full perms, and I have the abiliity to edit my alts's things, why can't I edit the notecard?
[8:18] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ I can delete it from the object....
[8:18] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ I can put a new one in
[8:18] Media Hax: .. CG, this has implicationsalso in land settings..it can be set to share with group, but not deeded, which causes all kinds of trouble for peeps
[8:18] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ but I can't take out a copy, nor edit it in situ.
[8:19] Teagan Linden: ...... I'll mention it to Kate and the doc team, so see if we can get a KB article
[8:19] Teagan Linden: ...... *to so
[8:19] CG Linden: . yeah, Wolfgang volunteered to write up something, Kelly and I spend about 30 minutes going over some scenarios
[8:19] Arawn Spitteler: ......... Aargle, are you talking about the fact that every edition of a notecard has a new UUID?
[8:19] Imaze Rhiano: .......... you can deed land parcels, Media
[8:20] Media Hax: .. yes.. i know
[8:20] CG Linden: . Hmmm... I think the only way to allow someone else to change something of yours is to share with group
[8:20] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ no, arawn... I"m talking about ... well... what I talked about. my alt has a full-perms notecard in an object, I can edit my alts things, why can't I edit that notecard.
[8:20] CG Linden: . the fact that next owner permissions are full, only applies if you transfer ownership
[8:20] CG Linden: . and full owner permissions only apply if you're the owner
[8:21] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ well, you can change size and position and delete contents, add contents, etc. I just wondered why that one bit doesn't work.
[8:21] CG Linden: . so I would try sharing the notecard with group, then try editing
[8:21] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ yeah... I'll give that a try
[8:21] CG Linden: . Hi CUmmere
[8:22] Cummere Mayo: ................... sorry im late ive been trying to figure out how to stop sl from soemtimes disabling a soundcard on exit and lost track of time
[8:22] CG Linden: . so, today we have a guest, two guests even :)
[8:22] Flos Spore: ................ :-)
[8:23] CG Linden: . Simon Linden does simulator development
[8:23] CG Linden: . Teagan is in our "resi" team
[8:23] Teagan Linden waves
[8:23] XLR8RRICK Hudson: ........... Simon and Teagan
[8:23] Lamorna Proctor: .............. Hello Simon and Teagan
[8:23] Teagan Linden: ...... Hello! :)
[8:23] Simon Linden: .................. Hi everyone
[8:23] WolfPup Lowenhar: .... morning simon and teagan
[8:23] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ hey, Simon
[8:24] Cummere Mayo: ................... yay two of my fave lindens next to joppa and cg to annoy *giggles
[8:24] Cummere Mayo: ................... /ao off
[8:24] Teagan Linden: ...... hehe :)
[8:24] CG Linden: . Johny, we generally do not use voice here :)
[8:24] Arawn Spitteler looks at Teagan's Profile, and note that Asset Servers are slow, this morning.
[8:24] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ voice is hard to log
[8:24] Lamorna Proctor just muted voice
[8:25] Lamorna Proctor: .............. so, CG, how are we doing on the current RC Client cycle?
[8:25] Lamorna Proctor: .............. I was forcefed 1.22.8 today
[8:25] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ brb... RL crisis
[8:25] WolfPup Lowenhar: .... got public 1.22.8 last night
[8:26] ZOE Popstar: ..... Yes me tooo
[8:26] CG Linden: . yes
[8:26] Media Hax: .. Simon are we in the middle or end of a new rollout?
[8:26] HALEY Salomon: ....... me to
[8:26] CG Linden: . rollout ended yesterday
[8:26] XLR8RRICK Hudson: ........... both Client and Server code are working well . Congradulations
[8:26] Gareth Qunhua: .................... for some reason i find that sl script performance fluctuate from normal to not responding.
[8:26] Gareth Qunhua: .................... the past few days
[8:26] Simon Linden: .................. There was just a new 1.25 rollout this week -- it finished yesterday
[8:26] Simon Linden: .................. (new sims, that is)
[8:26] CG Linden: . 1.25.5 was deployed by 10am yesterday, and 1.22.8 was released yesterday evening
[8:27] Lamorna Proctor: .............. how many more client iterations before 1.22 goes mainstream?
[8:27] CG Linden: . did anyone notice any performance changes?
[8:27] Gareth Qunhua: .................... ahh i see that explain the smoother client i have today
[8:27] Gareth Qunhua: .................... yup performance is better today
[8:27] Media Hax: .. I may have an issue, but I will test hard today
[8:27] XLR8RRICK Hudson: ........... I did the RC is very stable now
[8:27] WolfPup Lowenhar: .... one thing im noticeing on my viewer is that the animations seem a little slow might need to up the BW setting
[8:28] Lamorna Proctor: .............. i've been testing scripts all day and they have been fine... apart from my own bugs ;0
[8:28] Cummere Mayo: ................... ive noticed a very slight lag reduction on the heavier used sims
[8:28] CG Linden: . well, I was interested whether busy sims showed any signs of improvement
[8:28] WolfPup Lowenhar: .... im wanting test some fossl vender script on aditi but the servers they connect to are on agni
[8:28] Media Hax: .. im seeing some odd sleep behaviour in scripts opening URLs... but I will see if it was prior version or latest today
[8:29] Arawn Spitteler: ......... How did I get my rows bck; I don't know if that's a version errr, ofr if I clicked onsomething.
[8:29] CG Linden: . Johny....
[8:29] Cummere Mayo: ................... about 1-3 fps improvement.. but still 2708 is with us... always
[8:29] Gareth Qunhua: .................... yup there is lots of improvement, i didn't even crash my viewer once i tp in :p
[8:29] Lamorna Proctor: .............. johnny, aargle is afk, but he'll kick you when he comes back
[8:30] CG Linden: . byebye :)
[8:30] CG Linden: . ok, where were we...
[8:30] Gareth Qunhua: .................... i'm not sure about rezing objects though, haven't start building yet
[8:30] CG Linden: . Ah yes, sim performance
[8:30] Lamorna Proctor: .............. I'll see how Zynadu is performing when I get back
[8:31] CG Linden: . What data are we now collecting on simperformance, Simon?
[8:31] Cummere Mayo: ................... so simon have they figured out what way back in the day broke sim performance yet?
[8:31] Media Hax: .. Any Plans to obsolete clients prior to 1.21?
[8:31] Simon Linden: .................. Well, there is a bunch of new metrics in 1.25 that can be turned on when we want to examine a slow region
[8:31] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ who am I supposed to kick now?
[8:32] Lamorna Proctor: .............. don't worry, CG kicked him
[8:32] CG Linden already did :)
[8:32] Simon Linden: .................. The info in the ctrl-shift-1 panel has changed slightly as well, and makes more sense in the RC viewer
[8:32] Gellan Glenelg: ..................... yeah - hasn't stopped it being logged as a "bug" several times tho :)
[8:32] CG Linden: . active objects and scripts yummy
[8:32] XLR8RRICK Hudson: ........... what changed in the Statistic display
[8:33] CG Linden: . well, active objects and scripts are a great addition
[8:33] HALEY Salomon: ....... QUEEN POPSTAR
[8:33] Simon Linden: .................. In the "Time" section the "Total Frame Time" meaning changed slightly, and there's a new "Spare Time" value
[8:34] Simon Linden: .................. "Total Frame Time" is how long the frame lasts - which if the sim is running 45fps, will hover at 23ms
[8:34] Simon Linden: .................. It get higher if the sim slows down
[8:34] Simon Linden: .................. The "Spare Time" is the amount of extra time the sim has when it's running 45fps -- it's overhead until it will slow down
[8:34] CG Linden: . I see spare time 0, is thta good or bad?
[8:35] Simon Linden: .................. It looks like we're filling it up with scripts
[8:35] Amber DeCuir: ........ This new viewer is crashing me out a lot
[8:35] Simon Linden: .................. Having a higher number there is better, but right now we're basically running full speed, but scripts are filling in any extra time
[8:35] Amber DeCuir: ........ and is using a lot more memory
[8:36] CG Linden: . wouldnt scripts always fill up the spare time?
[8:36] Lamorna Proctor: .............. they do mine
[8:36] Simon Linden: .................. Depends on how many scripts you have
[8:36] Imaze Rhiano: .......... I just heard from another chat group that Linux client have audio problems with 1.22.8
[8:36] CG Linden: . yeah, we know about that
[8:37] Gareth Qunhua: .................... ohh yeah for some reason voice is a little blurry for me today
[8:37] Lamorna Proctor: .............. yes, it's in the release notes
[8:37] CG Linden: . apparently, linux on intel hardware is goign to get worse before it gets better
[8:37] Media Hax: .. thats a microsoft feature Imaze
[8:37] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ odd.... RL is blurry for me today, too.
[8:37] Gareth Qunhua: .................... rofl
[8:37] Gareth Qunhua: .................... anyway where can i check the spare time?
[8:38] CG Linden: . well, you need to expand down the statistucs window
[8:38] CG Linden: . make it as tall as you can
[8:38] Simon Linden: .................. In the RC viewer, press ctrl-shift-1, then click on the 'TIme' section at the bottom to expand it
[8:38] CG Linden: . and at the bottom you will see all the different "time(ms)" entries
[8:38] Gareth Qunhua: .................... ahh thanks
[8:38] CG Linden: . total, net, physics, ....
[8:38] Gareth Qunhua: .................... didn't know there were more stats below ther
[8:39] Simon Linden: .................. The simulator has a few things it has to do every frame - physics, agent time, images, some scripts
[8:39] Simon Linden: .................. If it has extra time in the frame, it will run more scripts
[8:39] Simon Linden: .................. If it runs all the scripts, then it has some spare time
[8:39] CG Linden: . you an also click on basic/advanced and simulator to fold/unfold parts of the display
[8:39] HALEY Salomon: ....... TWIN PRINCESS
[8:39] Simon Linden: .................. If the 'required' stuff (physics, etc) takes too long, then the frame rate starts to drop
[8:40] Opensource Obscure: ... i sort of hate how the statistics floater behaves when you click on an item - does that make sense for you? i mean, subsections-collapsing
[8:40] CG Linden: . I wished the collapsible items would be more visible as such, yes
[8:40] Lamorna Proctor: .............. yes, they need arrows, like in inventory
[8:40] Gareth Qunhua: .................... woah i got 400+ ping >_<
[8:41] CG Linden: . so, thanks Simon, that was great
[8:42] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ need to play with that back home
[8:42] Gareth Qunhua: .................... yup
[8:42] XLR8RRICK Hudson: ........... I like it Simon
[8:42] CG Linden: . I still wished the top script display would work per parcel, since I think this would help out a lot on the mainland
[8:43] WolfPup Lowenhar: .... that it would
[8:43] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ I"m appalled how many innocuous things take so much script time
[8:43] CG Linden: . so, for 1.23 or 1.24 we have a couple of more permission goodies coming...
[8:43] Simon Linden: .................. In 1.26 avatars will show up in the 'top scripts display' so you can see how much their attachments and HUDs cost
[8:44] CG Linden: . oh cool!
[8:44] Aargle Zymurgy perks up a bit.
[8:44] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ ok, fantastic, Simon
[8:44] XLR8RRICK Hudson: ........... nice
[8:44] Lamorna Proctor: .............. good, because it freaked ud out how much script time was taken by poseballs
[8:44] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ I was thinking more sim owners would start clamping down on people getting a bit excessive.
[8:44] Imaze Rhiano: .......... how about those memory limits for scripts - how they come together?
[8:44] CG Linden: . yeah, that's an indirect way to measure avatar script usage
[8:44] Lamorna Proctor: .............. until we realised that they included the attachments of the person sitting on tjem
[8:45] XLR8RRICK Hudson: ........... I have seen ARCs of 250000
[8:45] CG Linden: . well, those are still being tweaked... memory limits
[8:45] WolfPup Lowenhar: .... ouch!
[8:45] Simon Linden: .................. right, when you're sitting on something, internally it's like being a linked child prim, so some of that info gets rolled up
[8:45] Simon Linden: .................. Sometimes that's good, sometime it's confusing
[8:46] CG Linden: . the basic problem for scripters is that lsl doesn't have an array construct, and therefore people need to use lists instead... and the list operations are cimbersome, even internally...
[8:46] CG Linden: . if prims aren't a problem, I like using prims as arrays :)
[8:46] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ I've done just that with my latest.
[8:47] Lamorna Proctor: .............. mind you, i'm not a huge fan of fixed-length arrays
[8:47] WolfPup Lowenhar: .... what is the best way to tweek the viewers to get the best FPS and still have good rendering
[8:47] Lamorna Proctor: .............. what we REALLY need are structures
[8:47] CG Linden: . for example the time clock behind me uses that concept
[8:47] Lamorna Proctor: .............. instead of strided lists
[8:47] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ you were saying something about permissions?
[8:47] CG Linden: . well, there are plenty of people att LL who can't wait to see C# get out
[8:47] CG Linden: . yes, I was going to talk some more about permissions
[8:48] CG Linden: . http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8049 is being worked on, and will probably be in 1.24
[8:48] CG Linden: . maybe even 1.23, but unlikely
[8:48] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ I"m thinking back to a 100 prim object and nearly 400 scripts whose perms I'm going to have to tweak
[8:48] Arawn Spitteler: ......... What's 8049?
[8:48] CG Linden: . I would love to see some comments (and votes) for http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-3551;jsessionid=4D66C8F6F795474A076152FBA23869A5
[8:48] CG Linden: . oops
[8:48] CG Linden: . SVC-3551
[8:48] Jeffbot 2.3: ...................... https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/svc-3551
[8:49] CG Linden: . 8049 is default permissions
[8:49] CG Linden: . 3551 is for expanding the usefulness of two lsl functions to set permissions on object content
[8:49] Lamorna Proctor really wants llSetForSale
[8:50] CG Linden: . 1.23 I believe will already feature a viewer widget to make mass permission changes
[8:50] CG Linden: . have you made a jira for it, Lam?
[8:50] Lamorna Proctor: .............. yes
[8:50] Lamorna Proctor: .............. there is one already
[8:50] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ #?
[8:50] CG Linden: . have the number handy?
[8:50] Lamorna Proctor: .............. looking...
[8:50] Aargle Zymurgy: ............ I just voted for 3551. no comments. I think it just stands to reason it's needed.
[8:50] Gellan Glenelg: ..................... SVC-1593
[8:50] Jeffbot 2.3: ...................... https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/svc-1593
[8:51] CG Linden: . love gellan the Jira master
[8:51] Jeffbot 2.3: ...................... http://osiris.lindenlab.com/love/gellan/the%20Jira%20master
[8:51] Gellan Glenelg: ..................... eek. why did jeffbot give THAT?
[8:51] Gareth Qunhua: .................... lol
[8:51] Simon Linden: .................. ha, that's a hard site to get to :)
[8:51] Teagan Linden: ...... Jeffbot sent you love! <3
[8:51] Amber DeCuir: ........ hahahahaha
[8:52] Gellan Glenelg: ..................... awww
[8:52] Lamorna Proctor: .............. that's the one
[8:52] CG Linden: . it's a Linden Lab thing
[8:52] Cummere Mayo: ................... o.o
[8:52] Amber DeCuir: ........ And a privatedocument too LOL
[8:52] CG Linden: . most certainly you heard of the "love machine"... I don't think there is any event where phillip doesn;t mention it
[8:52] Lamorna Proctor: .............. i don't buy the "security issues" about llSetForSale
