Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

Want to help us improve articles? We appreciate your insights! It's easy!

  1. Login to this Second Life Wiki using the link in the top-right corner. (If you aren't already logged in.)
  2. Familiarize yourself with our Style Guide so you know what awesomeness we expect from you. If you're new to the wiki, get help.
  3. Start editing Knowledge Base articles. See KB To Do List for ideas on what to do.
  4. Documentation Team & Resident Reviewers review your edits, and if approved, they become "stable" versions which everyone sees by default.
  5. If you'd like to be a Reviewer, which means you'll help us approve others' edits, please build up a history of edits you're proud of — show us what you can do! Then, contact Torley Linden.

What is the difference between "stable page" and "draft"

Knowledge Base articles are under revision control, which means that reviewers must approve all edits to the article. So, when a regular user (not an administrator or designated reviewer), edits such an article, the edits become the "draft revision" or "current revision." Once a reviewer or administrator approves the edit, it becomes the "stable revision."

Both the stable revision and the draft revision (if there is one) are available through the tabs at the top of each page. By default, users always see the stable revision. Although you can view the draft revision, keep in mind that it has not been vetted by Linden Lab employees or experienced reviewers.

What is the Linden Lab Official namespace?

As part of the KB2Wiki Pilot, we introduced the "Linden Lab Official" namespace to this wiki to clearly denote policy and service articles which aren't open for editing because of legal, canon, and other reasons. This came about for a couple reasons:

  • There are several policy & service articles in the Beginners category we're using for this pilot.
  • There's been confusion about what articles on the Second Life Wiki are "the word" of Linden Lab. Furthermore, each article in this namespace will have a header and footer further making this status clear.

Thus, we're using the flexibility of the wiki to offer both many pages that can continue to be contributed to by Residents like you, and some that shouldn't be.

How do I compile articles?

Say there's a series of short question & answer articles and you want to bundle them into a single page without affecting the original content. Your solution is to use transclusion.

On a philosophical note, see "The art of compiling".

Reviewer resources

Reviewers have the ability to review and approve article revisions for articles in the Knowledge Base category that become the "Stable page" or (default) version. Reviewers are a group of designated Residents with proven wiki and Second Life experience. Reviewers, like other Volunteers, must be in good standing with Linden Lab.

The Documentation Team

The Doc Team oversees the Knowledge Base. We're available to answer your questions.

Tips & tricks

  • Make sure to review your own edits! - After you click Save Page, you need to scroll up to the top of the page, where it shows the differences in the last revision and yours. You also need to rate your own edit at least "somewhat accurate", "somewhat clear", and "somewhat complete".
  • Admin Dashboard - Provides links to special pages listing articles needing review and more.
  • Flagged Revs Configuration - Explains how the Flagged Revisions extension works on this wiki, and a bit about the article review process.
  • Template changes - If you change a template, the changes might only slowly propagate to pages that transclude the template. You can speed it up with another null edit in order to clear the cache.
  • For Reviewers, see Unreviewed Pages, but always take the initiative to improve pages, even if you don't see them on that list.

Editor resources

Any Resident logged in to the wiki can edit all unprotected articles. However an edit to a Knowledge Base article must be approved by a reviewer before it becomes the "stable" revision that everyone sees by default.

See the Style Guide for information on how to "craft beautiful documents which aren't just well-written, but easy-to-read".
