Avatar name questions

Can I have a custom last name for my Second Life account?

Template:Needs Translation/de Template:Needs Translation/es Template:Needs Translation/el Template:Needs Translation/fr Template:Needs Translation/he Template:Needs Translation/it Template:Needs Translation/ja Template:Needs Translation/ko Template:Needs Translation/nl Template:Needs Translation/hu Template:Needs Translation/no Template:Needs Translation/da Template:Needs Translation/sv Template:Needs Translation/tr Template:Needs Translation/pl Template:Needs Translation/pt Template:Needs Translation/ru Template:Needs Translation/uk Template:Needs Translation/zh-Hans Template:Needs Translation/zh-Hant

When you sign up for Second Life®, you create your account name by entering a first name, and selecting a last name from a list. The last names cycle in and out of usage as Residents choose them. This creates a good variety of inworld names, gives Residents some identity through the rarity of their last name, and most importantly, allows Residents to use common first names (there's always a good chance you can be "Dave" Someone), thus avoiding the awkward names on some other services (like "dave298374") that can reduce individuality.

Under special circumstances, you can create your own last name — see the "Second Life Last Names FAQ" for details!

Why isn't the last name I want listed?

Template:Needs Translation/de Template:Needs Translation/es Template:Needs Translation/el Template:Needs Translation/fr Template:Needs Translation/he Template:Needs Translation/it Template:Needs Translation/ja Template:Needs Translation/ko Template:Needs Translation/nl Template:Needs Translation/hu Template:Needs Translation/no Template:Needs Translation/da Template:Needs Translation/sv Template:Needs Translation/tr Template:Needs Translation/pl Template:Needs Translation/pt Template:Needs Translation/ru Template:Needs Translation/uk Template:Needs Translation/zh-Hans Template:Needs Translation/zh-Hant

You may have seen other residents with a Second Life last name that you like, but you find that you are not able to choose it during registration. Second Life names are cycled in and out of usage. A given last name is removed from the New Account list when a certain number of people have used it.

Unfortunately, we cannot re-enable names that have been cycled out of usage.

Can I change my avatar's name?

Template:Needs Translation/de Template:Needs Translation/es Template:Needs Translation/el Template:Needs Translation/fr Template:Needs Translation/he Template:Needs Translation/it Template:Needs Translation/ja Template:Needs Translation/ko Template:Needs Translation/nl Template:Needs Translation/hu Template:Needs Translation/no Template:Needs Translation/da Template:Needs Translation/sv Template:Needs Translation/tr Template:Needs Translation/pl Template:Needs Translation/pt Template:Needs Translation/ru Template:Needs Translation/uk Template:Needs Translation/zh-Hans Template:Needs Translation/zh-Hant

Your Second Life avatar and account name is your account, for all intents and purposes. Your avatar's appearance, inventory, friends, L$ balance, etc. are all tied to the name you've chosen. As a result, while you may create additional Second Life accounts, Linden Lab is unable to rename an existing account.

Can I turn off the display of my own avatar's name to others?

There is no way for you to turn off the display of your own avatar's name to others. However, depending on their preferences, other Residents can choose not to see the names of other avatars. So it's possible that another Resident may not see your name, but that will be their choice, not yours.

Other questions

How can I make sure I stay out of trouble?

Template:Needs Translation/de Template:Needs Translation/es Template:Needs Translation/el Template:Needs Translation/fr Template:Needs Translation/he Template:Needs Translation/it Template:Needs Translation/ja Template:Needs Translation/ko Template:Needs Translation/nl Template:Needs Translation/hu Template:Needs Translation/no Template:Needs Translation/da Template:Needs Translation/sv Template:Needs Translation/tr Template:Needs Translation/pl Template:Needs Translation/pt Template:Needs Translation/ru Template:Needs Translation/uk Template:Needs Translation/zh-Hans Template:Needs Translation/zh-Hant

If you just want to have fun, and don't do anything bad or wrong, then just read and follow the Community Standards, the guidelines to your Second Life experience. Follow them and you should be fine.

What does "SLT" stand for?

Template:Needs Translation/de Template:Needs Translation/es Template:Needs Translation/el Template:Needs Translation/fr Template:Needs Translation/he Template:Needs Translation/it Template:Needs Translation/ja Template:Needs Translation/ko Template:Needs Translation/nl Template:Needs Translation/hu Template:Needs Translation/no Template:Needs Translation/da Template:Needs Translation/sv Template:Needs Translation/tr Template:Needs Translation/pl Template:Needs Translation/pt Template:Needs Translation/ru Template:Needs Translation/uk Template:Needs Translation/zh-Hans Template:Needs Translation/zh-Hant

"SLT" is a deprecated initialism for "Second Life Time". Due to lots of confusion as Second Life became increasingly global, we changed the in-Viewer clock to show Pacific Time instead (PDT or PST depending on daylight savings).

So, for official purposes, don't use SLT. If you spot someone using it, show them this page. If you need help figuring out time zones, The World Clock can help.

Unless otherwise noted, miscellaneous times on our website, such as our Second Life Blogs, are in Pacific Time.
