This article explains some of the things Xstreet customers and merchants may want to keep in mind regarding PayPal.

Fees and announcements
First, please make sure you've read the Xstreet fees, and that you understand these fees prior to using this service. Any changes to the fee schedule will be reflected in that article, and most will be formally announced in our Commerce Forums. Please check the Commerce Forums often in order to avoid surprises.
Fraud
Fraud is a very real risk when transacting any online business, and nobody likes to lose money to fraud, or to be used as a waystation for fraud. Keeping this in mind, we've implemented a very stringent fraud protection system. One of the main components of this system is a rating score that's attached to each account. The rating score is based on several factors, but it primarily relates to the age of the Xstreet account, age of the Second Life® avatar, and the PayPal verification status of the PayPal account being used.
Accounts and avatars under 45 days old have a much lower rating than more mature accounts. Once an account and avatar both pass the 45-day mark, that account's rating begins to increase over time, though not immediately, and without large upward jumps. The same goes for verified PayPal accounts: just because you verify your PayPal account doesn't mean you'll immediately be able to buy hundreds of thousands of Linden Dollars (L$) in goods at once.
Note: Limits vary from account to account. You'll be told what your limits are when you go to deposit funds.
Fraud reviews
In order to expedite our Customer's transactions, we conduct reviews several times through out our business day and into late night hours.
First-time PayPal users should be aware that all first-time Xstreet PayPal user transactions are automatically flagged and held for a manual review by our fraud screening software. This is normal and necessary in order to insure that we can continue to operate in the present-day environment of the internet and of Second Life, which by its nature includes a nonzero risk of fraud.
Depending on changing criteria, our automated fraud prevention software may flag and hold any PayPal transaction at any time. This proactive approach to fraud is necessary in order for us to continue providing risk-free services to the Residents of Second Life.
Using Mass Pay
Limits and holds may also be averted by using PayPal's Mass Pay functionality to make your deposits. Mass Pay is available to Business and Premium PayPal accounts, and upgrading is free.
Note: There is a charge for normal payments to your PayPal account. These charges don't apply when sending funds from your Xstreet account to your Business or Premium PayPal account because we use Mass Pay to save you money.
To send a Mass Payment:
- Log into your PayPal account.
- Click the Mass Pay link at the bottom of any page.
- Click Make a Mass Payment. Mass Pay requires you to create a text file containing your payments.
- Create a text file anywhere on your computer with these contents, and make sure that the spaces between the items are tabs:
-
paypal@xstreetsl.com 150.00 USD
-
- Save the file.
- Specify the file you just saved as the file attachment on the Mass Payment page.
- Select Email Address as the Recipient Type.
- Enter your Xstreet account name in the Note field.
- Send the payment.
What this means to you
All this talk of fraud and limits is interesting, but what does it mean to you? It means that some of your transactions may be denied outright, or in borderline cases, they may be flagged for manual review and approval. Overall, the percentage of transactions that are flagged or denied is very small, but there's always a chance that it could happen to you; the information in this article has been provided to help you be less surprised if it happens.
If a USD deposit or item purchase is flagged for manual review, a message alerting you to this fact will be displayed after the transaction is initiated. Manual reviews are usually done within two business days. Upon reviewing the transaction, we may hold it for up to seven days. The volume of holds we must place prohibits us from automatically notifying you that we're holding your funds, but you're welcome to contact us at our Support page to inquire about the status of your pending transactions.
About failed purchases
Items in Second Life may be undeliverable for many reasons. When this happens, Xstreet immediately tells you and the merchant that the purchase failed. In this case, your PayPal funds are converted into Linden Dollars and credited to your Xstreet account. This way, you can again attempt to purchase the item (or something else, if you want) without needing to go through PayPal again to do it.
If you have any further questions about PayPal transactions, please direct them to our Support page.
How do I use PayPal without a credit card?
This is a workaround that can allow you to buy Linden Dollars (L$) without a credit card by using a PayPal account. This method works best if you have a bank account that allows you to do electronic banking.
Note: This has been tested with a Dutch PayPal account and may not be applicable to all international Residents. If you find this works for you in your country please let us know at our Support page.
To set yourself up to buy L$ without entering credit card information on the Second Life website:
- Sign up for a free PayPal account at paypal.com.
- When finished, click the button on the bottom of the page. A form for credit card information opens.
- Without filling out any of the credit card information, click the button on the right to continue the signup procedure.
- Activate your PayPal account as usual through the confirmation email.
- Deposit money into your PayPal account.
- Log into your PayPal account and click the Add Funds tab to deposit funds from your bank account.
- When you choose to make a deposit, PayPal shows you the bank account number from which the funds will be withdrawn, along with a unique transaction code. Use this transaction code with your deposit. It may take up to 5 days for the funds to arrive in your PayPal account.
- Once the funds are in your PayPal account, you can credit your Xstreet account and use that money to purchase L$.
The following are some things to keep in mind when using this method:
- Please be sure you've read the Marketplace FAQ and Xstreet fees.
- Be aware that there's a limit on the amount of money you can deposit on a daily and weekly basis using standard PayPal payments. Please see the following article for more information: Using PayPal with Xstreet
- Deposits from Paypal accounts may be flagged for manual review. In some cases, funds may be held up to seven days before they become active in your Xstreet account.
- Once your funds are available you can purchase Linden Dollars from Xstreet using one of the following methods:
- ** The Currency Exchange, which will probably have the best price
- The Buy/Sell Page, which is the easiest way to purchase
- When you've purchased L$ and they show in your account balance on Xstreet, you can withdraw them in Second Life at an Xstreet Terminal by typing "withdraw X" (replace X with the amount you want to withdraw) or by clicking the Withdraw from your Funds Page.
- After you've withdrawn L$ from a terminal, they'll show in your Second Life account information page at secondlife.com.
Important: It's very important to understand that if you have not supplied credit card information to Linden Lab, you should never exchange your L$ to USD through the Second Life website. That's because those USD are useless without credit card information, since all USD transactions at secondlife.com (such as account upgrades or exchange for L$) require it. Since you didn't supply that information to Linden Lab, no USD transactions will work properly.
