User:Prospero Linden
From Second Life Wiki
Prospero Linden is a member of the "DNOC" ("Distributed Network Operations Center"). The DNOC is a group of engineers spread around the world. We each spend half of our time "on shift" watching Second Life for network, server, and other problems. Much of this time is spent running from one region to the next, fixing problems that have cropped up, but sometimes we also have to deal with larger issues. The other half of our time is spent on various projects. At the moment (as of 2007-11-07), one project Prospero has in project is the creation of an automated tool for monitoring the state and history of all of the hosts that run regions.
Prospero Linden's real life avatar is Rob Knop. Rob has a PhD in Physics from Caltech, where he worked on infrared observations of active galactic nuclei. As a post-doc with the Supernova Cosmology Project at Lawrence Berkeley Lab, he was involved in the discovery that the expansion of our Universe is accelerating. After six years as an assistant professor at a research university, he decided it was time to run screaming from academia, and became a Linden.
Rob is an amateur violinist and violist, and currently plays with the Nashville Philharmonic. He has also done a lot of community theater in the past, having acted in, stage managed, and directed a number of plays and musicals. He's also your typical nerd: science fiction reader, gamer, and embarassingly expert on the original series Star Trek episodes.
Rob occasionally writes a blog.
Office Hours
As Prospero is not a member of the in-world support team, these office hours are not meant as a help desk or to provide customer support, but are here to talk about anything else you want -- what does somebody in Operations do, what sorts of things is Prospero working on, why is it that not enough kids these days are familiar with The Hitch-hikers' Guide to the Galaxy and other topics of import.
