== Volunteer ... not me! ==

Last Saturday I attended an obligatory information session.
I was early on the SL Volunteer HI and was witness of a session I didn't subscribe to.

What struck me was that a hugh number of mentor-to-be where present.
And some profane language was used.
At that time I wondered how a class like this could improve the quality of a volunteer to promote to mentor.

So I asked my "mentor". He told me it wasn't his class and that he did not have the time to talk to me at that moment because he was watching "Eagle one".
In the mean time he appeared to be present in the class I was watching on the SL volunteer HI sandbox?

When I attended the class I did sign up for, I was told after 30 minutes the class wouldn't start for another hour. Start time was changed ? and not communicated.

At that moment I decided that I'm no volunteer anymore.
I don't have the urge to become a SL approved mentor.

I like to help everybody, I offer my friendship and my skills to everybody who need a friend and/or help. I'm a true mentor by hart, not because SL says so.
I would very strongly suggest that (a) directly under the page name ('Main Page' - which could do with being changed anyway) is a statement along the lines of '''''"This wiki relates to the Open Source client and protocols for Second Life only. If you are looking for assistance regarding Second Life please refer to '''(whatever page is felt best)"'' as it is clear from the comments on the announcement thread on the SL Blog that there are an awful lot of people who do not understand what this is all about and it will probably scare some of them! == SL client to massive ==
I wonder whether the limited success of SL is caused by the fact that the client is too massive.<br/>
Several friends of mine have only limited computers and limited network capabilities and therefore drop out of SL after the first experience. It is considered slow and unusable. ?So why would they stay?<br/>
Not only the download of 32Mb can be a hamper to set SL up on one's computer.<br/>
All the developertools available in the client might be blocking too. It all consumes computer power<br/>
Not everybody is interested in landshaping tools, or building activities or continuously dressing up.
So I suggest to make several parts of the client optional/switchable (on/off) after the kernel is loaded.
This potentially reduces the size of the kernel with 40 to 50%. And usage of computer power will decrease with about 20%.<br/>
In SL I'm Gal Canning. In RL as well as in SL I'm a man of about 48 years old.
I'm a technician, a teacher, a manager and can be characterized as a fixer.

Sharing knowledge and interact with people, that is what makes a human being a better person. So here I am, ready to share and interact.

Although I'm rather fresh in Second Life (march 2007) I already could translate my RL designing and programming experience to SL en LSL.

(a proof of the pudding...look at Our Virtual Holland5)

You can always send me an IM if you have an SL related problem or want to share something.
You can visit my blog to know more about me...michel.artagainstwater.nl
==Script protocols and known chat channels==
<div style="padding: 0.5em 0.5em 1.5em">
Some times, scripts in Second Life send messages to one another to exchange information or coordinate behavior. The rules for that conversation are a ''protocol''. Being able to say "/1show" or "/1hug lee" are examples.

Such protocols use a common [[chat channel]]. The examples above use channel 1. They could just as easily have used any other number, but a user (and other objects) have to have some way to find the correct number.

Some protocols, such as combat systems, are quite complicated and could be better documented. This page can be used to help prevent conflicts and allow multiple programmers to coordinate the protocol definitions.
Add a protocol here if it is widely used, or might be sometime in the future.

A protocol in this list should also have its own pages where the protocol is defined in some detail.
