== More Info ==

Well I have needed to update this page for a long time. I haven't ever really been sure what to put here, but I think I'm just going to talk about my Second Life with a bit of Real Life thrown in.

I started Second Life 2 years ago. I was happy then... optimistic about what Second Life was and what it could do. I volunteered my time as a helper to others, making friends, shopping, pretty much everything you might expect. I had a wonderful group of friends; we called ourselves "the HIP Clique". We were all just of a similar spirit about helping. As time went on, I helped so much that I was made a Live Helper and a Second Life Mentor. It was a huge compliment to me, and I did everything I could be be worth that.

Being a Live Helper was such a rush. People would IM with the craziest questions sometimes, and I learned so much. It was amazing to be there at the moment that someone else needed help, and it was the most crazy pressure to try and help during a new Viewer release. This was back in the days when Linden Lab would come out with a new Viewer almost every 2 weeks. 100 people would be IM'ing Live Help at once with the same question. Crazy, but so much fun.

And I grew as a person then too. I learned more, I got to be there for others.

Then one day, without warning, Linden Lab decided that they should use a ticket system instead of helpers on-call. So all of us Live Helpers were now ex-Live Helpers, and SL was less exciting for a while.

It seems like this was about when Linden Lab changed somewhat also. Lindens weren't so accessible anymore. They were mostly hidden away, accessible via their IM's maybe, and maybe if you tug their coattails while they were out you might get to say "hi", but it wasn't the same. The world was changing, and I think we all could feel it.

I've had friends come and go over time in Second Life. I love lots of them still. Justice, Kalli, Zai, Asri (yes you too), Shoshana, Sparrow, Kitty B., and Kitty T., Chaos, Gwynnie, Trinity S and Nala, Meghan, Lisa, Loki, Jaiden, Codie, Beth, Mellow, and lots more.

I'm sad now tho. In RL, I now have severe clinical depression because of a lot of RL events that have all come together to bring me down. And the things lately that have happened in SL to me didn't help.

After truly earning my place to be given the enormous compliment to be a Helper and Mentor in Second Life, I was kicked out by AL for 'asking too many questions'. I think I just got tired of the VTeam dragging their feet as they added thousands of new people to the Mentor program, diluting the talent, removing the special-ness it might have had and just turning it into a commodity, where those new people are never really made a part of the group, just added in and forgotten. I went and chatted with Robin Linden about it all before Amber removed me; I think it helped maybe, but it didn't help me stay a Mentor. The VTeam seems to slowly be doing better now. I often wonder what it is that takes up so much of their day, but I am sure they have to deal with a lot of things we never see.

One of my more recent attempts to contribute to the greater good was at SL5B this year. I only signed up in the first place because SignpostMarv asked me to make a logo for it. Then one day Dusty Linden told us all that he stepped down and we all just stared at her for a moment dumbfounded trying to process it. She asked for volunteers to help lead in this vacuum, and I stepped up.

I had no idea I would end up getting so hurt by it all.

DL, I really can't say there's much love lost at this point, but I appreciate the insane struggle that the SL5B put you through, and even tho I can't say the decisions were perfect, I actually still respect your efforts. My final word to you would be to let the hard feelings go. We all struggled to put together a successful event, and even tho I couldn't be everything we needed as a team, I still tried my best.

So, why I am writing all this? I don't know really. I just need to let these feelings go, and I'm putting them out there. If you are reading this and have something else to contribute, feel free. Thank you to those who've helped me. Love, Trin.

I would be interested to know why Trinity's name was removed. I know she was co-director with someone, was it Dawn? And neither one shows. That hardly seems fair, especially given the number of hours they both put into the event, regardless of the positions they held. Just because someone does something that upsets some people doesn't remove the fact that they held the position for some time. Are we changing history?

You might want to put Dusty's name under infrastructure since she had so much input into what happened at the event.

This year's birthday celebration is a 2-week event. The first week, June 23 to June 29, will be kicked off by speeches from Philip Linden and M Linden. Themes for that week will feature exhibits from cultures past and present, arts, fashion, machinima, and music. For these exhibits, we’ve extended the deadline to Thursday, June 5 at 6pm PDT. Applications are now closed.

The second week, from June 30 to July 7, will feature exhibits from business, education, health care and nonprofits. We’ll close with a ceremony including a special guest speaker with a very important announcement. The deadline for the business, education, health care and nonprofit exhibits was Tuesday, June 10 at 6pm PDT. Applications are now closed.

New information will be added here as we are able to make it available, to keep our fellow residents of Second Life informed on the progress of our 5th Birthday Event. Information in English is the most updated.

This year's birthday celebration is a 2-week event. The first week, June 23 to June 29, will be kicked off by speeches from Philip Linden and M Linden. Themes for that week will feature exhibits from cultures past and present, arts, fashion, machinima, and music. For these exhibits, we’ve extended the deadline to Thursday, June 5 at 6pm PDT. Applications are now closed.

The second week, from June 30 to July 7, will feature exhibits from business, education, health care and nonprofits. We’ll close with a ceremony including a special guest speaker with a very important announcement. Themes for that week will feature exhibits from cultures past and present, arts, fashion, machinima, and music. For these exhibits, we’ve extended the deadline to Thursday, June 5 at 6pm PDT. Applications are now closed.

The second week, from June 30 to July 7, will feature exhibits from business, education, health care and nonprofits. We’ll close with a ceremony including a special guest speaker with a very important announcement. == Overview ==

Shoshana Epsilon takes extraordinary pictures in Second Life. Primarily a portrait artist, she also has some wonderfully emotive "world" pictures, as well. When taking portraits, she has a way of "capturing the soul" of the avatar that defies explanation. She specializes in raw photography, using very little Photoshop post-processing to achieve her goals.

Shoshana's first art display was at SL3B, SecondLife's 3rd Birthday. She has been the art director for [[SL4B_Art]] , and is now the director of SL5B's art display.

Shoshana has been the featured artist at several displays: the Metaverse Gallery Premiere Opening for the UTD (University of Texas at Dallas) Artech display, Angel Dorei museum and a the Library Gallery. She will be the featured artist at Avatrait in April 2008. The has been the curator at Rezzable's Cannery Gallery and is on the Board of Directors at Avatrait.

When I first came to Second Life, over a year ago, I was intrigued by the notion that this was a world where anything was possible, a literal dreamworld. Within my first day, I was seriously discouraged: it seemed that people's dreams amounted to a virtual condo in the virtual Keyes, with a virtual Beemer in the virtual driveway, having virtual sex with a virtual partner wearing virtual pounds of virtual bling, while virtual rapacious vitual land deals percolated in the background.

I'm glad I didn't stop there. In a very short time I made some good friends who showed me that it wasn't ALL that way - that just like anything else, virtual or otherwise, Sturgeon's Law holds true in all matters where people are involved: 90% of everything is crud. Music, movies, TV, food, literature, art. This is not to say that one should give up because the odds are so overwhelming, but to value even more the things that manage to buck the odds. Not to sound Pollyanna, but you really do need to look beyond the noise and din to see the wonders. They're out there to be found. And the more you find, the more you pursue the miraculous, the less you'll settle for less. It's not easy, and you have to decide to be a part of of it - not simply let it wash over you, or lament endlessly on the shortcomings, but dig your heels in and and draw the line in front of mediocracy.

As much as I hated hearing people chanting "Your World, your imagination", it really IS that. If the world sucks, do something about it. Is making Victorian adventure wear a fiscally wise course? Maybe not, but it's my imagination - if not me, then who? And I happen to think that I like a world where I can get a deepsea diving suit, even if I make it myself.

The Magic Lantern: I've had a number of people ask why I didn't make a video, or convert what I've done to video. That would miss the point. Back in the mid-90's I was working at a major effects house (not boasting so much as suggesting the level of imaging technology available). One of our systems people used our (then) beefy pipeline to download 3d images from the mars lander. He printed them on our very expensive digital printer... and mounted them in a handheld stereoscope from the 1880's. The irony of the massive engine of modern digital imaging being put to work for 19th century technology caught me just right. Hence, a Magic Lantern show, to be enjoyed as it should be - in a particular place and time, with no control by the viewer over the experience. A series of words and pictures, communicating in a 19th century fashion, via the engine of what hopes to be the next generation of a global communication system.

stab.

There is no Art inherent to Second Life. All attempts to classify and ismify the
creative activities that take place on the grid every day will fail. Because to
understand what counts as 'Art' on the grid demands that you step outside of the
fourth wall that we inexplicably breach the minute we log on.

Every texture of something Other on a prim demands the viewpoint of a frame
within a frame. Every object that responds to our 'touch' requires an infinite
leap of faith - the ultimate Suspension of Disbelief - that our Avatars are
'us'.

And *that* is where the Art in Second Life lies - not within the scripted
animation, or the tortured prim - but within the one true item that we have
unconditional control over - our *selves*.

the nature of digital imagery and video by restricting the processes and
outcomes to purely digital techniques, and to push the validity of digital
abstraction as more than a decorative element.

In Second Life, she is mainly interested in the relationship between the 'self'
and the 'avatar', the connections between the 'mind' and the 'screen', and the
implications of these on possible forms of artistic outcomes within the virtual
space.

In her First Life, she is a Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Art and Graphic
Design at Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK, where her role focuses on the
interdisciplinary nature of digital media and its practices. Her work has been
shown at the ICA in London, the Leeds Film Festival, and featured in Creative
Review magazine. She has also worked with the BBC, and is currently up to all
sorts of secret things.

She lives in Lancaster, with her cats and her Macs.

I love my Second Life, my sanctuary. Here we defy gravity, bound only by the shackles of our own imaginations. Here we dance, propelled by legs that never need rest. Here we experience ourselves in new and unbridled ways, without remorse, without regret.

Born in October of 2006, Felony is still a relative newcomer to this wonderful place. She is a petite mixture of European and Asian bloodlines, like me, though I was born and raised in the US of A.

Felony loves to dance. She has an active and playful imagination. She can be naughty and daring at times, but her soul is bright. She seeks out and thrives on positive energy. She is an artist in her heart, and she loves to explore the beautiful new worlds and amazing creations that her fellow Second Lifers create on a regular basis.

Hello, my dearies.

I found SL in November of 2005 and have had countless wonderful experiences with all of the awesome people I know here, so when I was asked to participate in SL's birthday, I happily agreed. So uh... welcome to my first gallery in SL. Having never done one of these before, I'm not sure what the etiquette is, but I'm not really one to stand on ceremony anyway.

I am really interested in SL as a new medium for bringing people together in new ways. So, when I made my gallery, I didn't want it to be just photos on a wall. I wanted it to be a fun space that would encourage people to hang out and socialize... to meet new friends and to CONNECT, instead of just wandering through quickly.

So, I have some photos here, but they display slowly, to encourage you to hang out and visit with your neighbor while your eyes nibble. Sit long, talk much, and enjoy them. When you're done, if you'd like to visit with me, also, I am generally found making messes on my plot in Wollaston, and you can find the LM in my picks.

Thaumata came to the grid in November 2005, after a friend suggested she would highly enjoy the collaborative nature of the residents there. The friend was correct, and Thau immediately dell in love with the grid and all of the amazing people she met there day after day.

Artistic mash-ups are absolutely the normal course of things for Thaumata. She is frequently seen building crazy homes on her lot in Wollaston, from steampunk airships to elaborate gardens and everything in between. These homes are always open to the public, and Thau highly enjoys watching people explore them. She started taking photos in SL to document these builds, and accidentally stumbled upon the Second Life Flickr community, which sealed the deal and dashed any hopes of ever escaping from this virtual life. Impressed at what she saw there, Thau started dabbling more into artistic photography and modeling. Modeling was kind to Thaumata, with several gallery shows, the cover of Anastacia SL magazine, and a story about beautiful avatars in a real life german magazine.

SL4B is Thaumata's first official gallery of her own, and she was flattered to participate. Not wanting to create a static space, she instead concentrated on building a simple space that focused more on gathering and less on photos, because that's what has been the most meaningful to her in SL.

== Off the Grid ==

Thaumata is a musician, playing piano since age 5, majoring in opera and tackling a plethora of teaching and performing gigs in the years since. Her current project is [http://www.splicemusic.com Splice], a website that allows musicians from around the world to make music together via the world's most advanced online sequencer and creative commons licenses. The 10-person Splice team will re-launch the site and present the world's most advanced online sequencer in June of 2007, which is making Thau's life a little hectic at the moment.

Another recent project was filming a portion of a pilot for VH1 for a show about airing your confessions on the internet, something Thau got very good at a few years ago, when she was one of the first people to use YouTube to broadcast her video diaries. The vlog got so much attention at the time that it was normal to get 200 emails a day from viewers. Thaumata used this power for awesome and launched a fundraising campaign for the 60-mile (90k) breast cancer walk she does each year. Through $5 and $10 donations from the internet, she raised nearly $10k for the cause in three months.

In her 'spare time', Thau likes to work on her spanish and meet new people. She calls Chicago her home, but often resides in Barcelona, Spain, as well as frequent trips to San Francisco for work.

I'm showing my photographs at the SL4 PG area.
Since I'm only 6 months old on Secondlife it is the most logical place to be. I will probably do an installation showing static pictures, some scripted slideshows and some interactive browser-like displays. The pictures will be grouped to show different activities here on Secondlife.
I didn't make a final decision on how to group the pictures but at least following categories will be represented :
- dancing (alone or with friends)
- portraits (me or other friends)
- activities (mainly sports or adventure type activities)
- artwork (some special setups, compositions, mashups,...)

It is a great experience to participate in this B-day activity. It's fantastic to show to everybody what different activities, different levels of creativity, and different levels of content creation can be achieved here in SL.

People in the real world have been confronted lately with only scandals and negative information about SL. I am convinced that this kind of initiative can help convince people that there is more happening in SL then what they hear in the newspapers. Secondlife is about our imagination, our creativity, our world ...

Since I'm only 6 month on Secondlife it is the most logical place to be.
I will probably do an installation showing static pictures, some scripted slideshows and some interactive browser-like displays. The pictures will be grouped to show different activities here on Secondlife.
I didn't make a final decision on how to group the pictures but at least following categories will be represented :

Second Life has become an outlet for my creativity in so many ways… I have to admit when I first arrived in SL, I wasn’t sure I’d stay. It seemed all about the shopping, and the clubbing until we finally bought our first land. That was the first I opened up Photoshop for anything other than to draw a box or by accident when I wanted to view a picture. I actually designed my first texture for SL. From that day forward, it became one possibility after another as I began to forge this emotional channel. I pursue many avenues: skin design, fabric design and accompanying fashion design, Victorian wear and most recently virtual photography and post production.

I express myself in many ways, through color, shading, filtering, texturing and in black and white. A tumble of emotions and many trial and errors occur, until it feels right. I joke often that I could never hope to recreate some of my better pieces...I don’t know how I got there. Sometimes that’s a blessing in disguise.

Art to me is about the feelings, and emotion it stimulates in the viewer. If something moves me, or causes a sudden memory to well up, then I pursue it…those are the times I hope that others have a reaction. Whether it was a want, a dream, an idea or even a fancy….

Artist Statement, Melodious Source:

I came to Second Life, as an explorer on a marvelous journey. I truly had no idea what I was in store for. The first few months I bumped around, enjoying it, the adventure of it, but wondering where my people were, my fellow creatives?

Being a RL artist, I decided my talent in SL could be to show others a view of this enchanting land, through my eyes, and it’s limitless possibilities of the imagination – with photography. Also, with the intention of inspiring others to “higher realms” of thought and artistic imagery, within this enchanting realm. My reward has been the amazing circle of friends I’ve made in my travels, who in turn lift and enhance my own evolution of character. I call it beautifully contagious - it spreads like wildfire. I am eternally grateful, and very much looking forward to all the future holds as I continue to learn. Exciting, excitement!

I draw inspiration from everything. I feel the joy and put it into my art. It could be a person... an emotion... a song... a color... I just never know. My objective is to show people SecondLife from my eyes, and hopefully - inspire them, by sharing the beauty.

I'm interested in many different media in both real-life and in Second Life; my subject matter is rather diverse, so with my work you'll never know quite what you're going to get.

I've been exhibiting my work in Second Life since 2005. I haven't had much real-life exposure so far, but I am extremely interested in bridging the gap.

I am the founder of The Art & Artist Network group, the largest group devoted to art in Second Life so far.

In my real artwork I analyse the world around me: I moved around as I was growing up, and didn't understand things because the rules were always changing. Through my paintings I looked intently my surroundings. For instance, I could see that people planted little shrubs too close to their houses, then the shrubs grew into huge things that pressed up against the walls. So I was undercover, but not by choice -- trying to figure things out from a purely visual standpoint.

Once I worked as a waitress. I did it because my friend Anne asked me to please work for her. Waitressing is part theatre and part nursing as well as part undercover spy. I was tickled by the undercover spy part: if you want to know which people are genuinely nice, work as a waitress. I'd never been in that section of society before -- holy moley it's a bizarre place. I should add "invisibility" to my list of waitressing components, as some people don't see you (as a person). I've always liked grumpy people, so the nursing part -- waiting on people with low blood sugar grumpiness who suddenly become wreathed in smiles after eating -- made me laugh.

Because I'm just that way, I've been searching for something "cool" about having ms, and let me tell you, it's been a fruitless task of many years -- until recently one morning as I was staggering up the stairs bearing a load of laundry. I don't know why it didn't occur to me before, but being a hopeless crip gives undercover observer status. I went to a Japanese teahouse once, for a tea ceremony, and as each person receives a cup he or she turns it and looks at every part -- observing and appreciating the weight, the texture, the dimensions, the color, the shape, the design, etc. I'm inclined that way anyway -- so what better way to turn life in my hands and observe each part than to have many roles? I like to see all around things -- so I have to go here and see life from above, here to see from below, here to see from any of a vast number of possible viewpoints. Makes sense to me.

One place I am able to explore now is art from the inside. Second Life gives me the ability to interact with my art in ways I'm not able to do in FL. I can build a house of my paintings, create any kind of avatar to be, design a stage set and upload it for 10L then act in it five minutes later. It's a bit like being inside the frame looking out. I have gone from analysing cultural subtext to exploring my own artwork, my own brain. It's turned the process from the charting of an unknown and hostile region to the exploration of the familiar, as new slants give perspective to old methods.

I like to shoot a diverse range of subjects, including landscapes, still life and portrait photography. Creations by other residents such as sculpture, I find fascinating.
I have created a set of photos with two tiny avatars called, The Tiny Adventures of Fox and Wolf, which many of my fellow SL photographers seem you enjoy.

Second Life, has produced a rich tapestry of individuals, locations and experiences, and if any of my photographs inspires someone to go exploring, create something or start taking photographs themselves, then I will be more than happy.

Second Life is only limited by your imagination, so go see, be inspired, create, be extraordinary.
