Tateru Nino: Included Linden Lab's description of the current traffic algorithm and the reasoning behind it

What is Traffic? (Dwell)

Linden initially introduced "traffic" or "dwell" as a way to reward residents who create popular locations.

The current traffic algorithm
In May 2008, Linden Lab provided a description of the traffic algorithm, which they assure is still current:

How ‘traffic’ works:
* Every user gets 1 point of dwell to give out during the 24 hours between midnight and midnight. Any parcel of land that the user spends more than 5 sequential minutes on gets counted as a place that they spent time.
* Parcels owned by the resident (or group) are counted as if they were the same parcel. The user's 1 point is then evenly divided between those parcels
* So, if was online for 1 hour and spent 20 minutes on resident A's parcel and 40 minutes on resident B's parcel, resident A would get 0.333 from me and resident B would get 0.666 from me.
* Alternately, if I only spent 5 minutes online and spent all of it on resident A's land, she would receive 1 point from me. Those raw point totals are what is reported in the find window.

Traffic does not take into account the length of time someone spends on a parcel, but rather is based on the proportion of their inworld time spent there.

As you can see, the traffic measurement is confusing to understand and doesn’t necessarily result in useful statistics for Residents, which is another reason why the Popular Places tab is being replaced with the Showcase.
(Source, LewisPR on behalf of Linden Lab, 16 May 2008)

How the algorithm evolved into its current form
The original idea was to reward builds of ‘good’ content. We first tried to detect "good" via Voting Stations -- green pillars placed in-world on which a user could click to indicate a parcel was "good". Only one vote per day per user per parcel was allowed. We would then tally up the votes nightly and distribute L$.

This didn't work well because users would gang up, fly around to all their friends' parcels and click the voting stations. Or they created vote farms - collections of 16m2 parcels each owned by a different person each with its own vote box, to make voting for friends easier. So we decided to replace it.

Dwell (subsequently renamed to ‘traffic’) was an attempt to limit how many "votes" a single user could provide in a day. The idea was to give each user one "aggregate vote" per day, and divide that contribution up among all parcels that user visited. Visits under 5 minutes were discarded as "just passing through".

(Source, LewisPR on behalf of Linden Lab, 16 May 2008)

Since 2006
* In 2006 traffic was changed to be a minute an avatar spends in a parcel (Ref: ) but only for avatars that do not move to another parcel (for at least five minutes) within the 24 hour data-collection period. Otherwise, it still works largely according to the pre-2006 model according to the Lab as of May 2008 (Ref: )
* The traffic of all avatars count, regardless of their membership status or if a resident or bot
* Mainland sims limited to 40 avatars generally can't have traffic over 57,600, while island estates with 100 avatar limits usually won't be over 144000, but those limits can be exceeded by avatars relogging back into a sim
* Traffic also determines which "Popular Places" are selected each night. You can see these by clicking on the Find button and selecting the "Popular Places" tab. They also appear on the Map as a "thumbs up" icon. (Note: as of viewer version 1.20, "Popular Places" is no longer included in the search system.)
* If you want to start another tedious argument about whether this wiki page or the knowledge base or any other source of information including various Linden Lab employees is right please review this thread and particularly this post which conclusively proved, again, that traffic is one point per avatar per minute (barring some small questions about the timing of the mechanism that tracks the minutes)

Up to 2006
* Initially, Dwell was a fixed value of points for each Resident assigned by calculating the proportion of their SL day spent at each location in the world on a daily basis. Previously, a Resident needed to spend at least 5 minutes in one full chunk to give a parcel at least one traffic point.
* Linden Lab offered a $US reward to the 2% of landowners who receive the most dwell - in proportion to the dwell their properties received. In August of 2004, US$2,308 was distributed to 36 landowners. This was essentially seed funding in the earlier days of SL when even a popular build could still become economically unviable due to very low population numbers.
* In mid-2006, stipends based on dwell were removed as population growth provided an audience sufficient enough to support a more conventional economy in Second Life.

Fixed a few minor syntax errors and reworked the top of the article a bit. As an article it is quite far along though it still has a ways to go. Strife Onizuka 03:32, 29 January 2007 (PST)

Intro is awful
"gymbal lock" is something that affects mechanical systems with gyroscopes. A quaternion rotation is a mathematical abstraction. The term simply does not apply, and only serves to confuse things. The reference to "SLERP" without a link is useless. Doran Zemlja

Gimbal lock effects Euler angles to which you wrote an article using them everywhere without mention it; it is a gross oversight. That sentence is a bit complex on review and yes there is no SLERP article but that doesn't mean someone won't write one (it is better to leave open links then no links; no links give no hint that a page should be created). I may write a short one tomorrow, I already have a function that implements it (I've just been pressed for time). I will find a better article on gimbal lock, the wikipedia one is pretty poor in this regard as it fails to go into the programing implications. I gave you the benefit of the doubt and looked up 'gymbal' in the dictionary, to which it was nowhere to be found; but 'gimbal' was. Strife Onizuka 19:33, 31 January 2007 (PST)

Mirroring using quaternions
I think I have worked out how to mirror a point (and therefore an entire object in pieces,) using quaternions, but does anyone here know how to, or if it is even possible to, define a rotation that turns a left hand into a right hand or vise-versa? This is a three diminsional mirror operation, but in four diminsions it is a simple rotation. (I could be wrong, but based on my research into quaternions it seems right...)<br />Cron Stardust 22:16, 25 March 2007 (PDT)
:It depends entirely upon which axis you want to mirror around. Save yourself some work and look up Jeffrey's Prim Mirror. Strife Onizuka 11:13, 26 March 2007 (PDT)

Moving this page
Shouldn't the content of this page be moved to Category:LSL Rotation? It seems confusing to me to have multiple Rotation pages.
:Good point, I see no problem merging them. -- Strife Onizuka 08:40, 22 July 2007 (PDT)

GetRot()/SetRot() chart
llGetLocalRot() and llGetRot() clearly do *not* return the same value in the root prim of an attachment. While I believe that llGetRot() returns the avatar rotation as indicated, llGetLocalRot() I believe gives the rotation of the root prim relative to the attachment point (or the avatar?)
:You are correct, that entry in the table is wrong. -- Strife Onizuka 08:40, 22 July 2007 (PDT)

Post questions about the Registration API here. If you can answer a question, please do. If not, Linden Lab will try to provide an answer.

Intermittent Error messages/outages
My call to GetCapabilities is ok, but on an intermittent basis, when I try to get the list of names, this is the result: "An fatal error has occurred (error ticket #19178). Please visit the support section at http://secondlife.com/support/ for further assistance. Note this error ticket code and a description of the problem.
Error Description: undefined method `permission' for #<User:***********>."

I have noticed that other gateways suffer from the same outage at the same times, while others do not. What can I do to prevent the outages from impacting my gateway?

RegAPI Capabilities expire
* A: We've now set them to not expire for 5 years, so this should not be a problem for now, and we'll fix this in the next revision of the RegAPI. (Glenn Linden, 5/22/07)
* As of 5/17/07, all existing capabilities were set to expire in 5 years, so for the near term, you only have to worry about this with new RegAPI accounts. (Glenn Linden 5/17/07)

Do I need to renew the capability URLs every 30 days?
A: No. The need to renew the capability URLs every 30 days or for each session is *no longer necessary* in the current reg API (i.e. the one you are using now). The code was changed so the capability URLs' expiration dates is now 'long lived' - i.e. expiration date is 5 years. So the need to renew them (and resubmit your password) is no longer needed.

When will we get additional capabilities with the RegAPI?
*A: (Update by Sue Linden 2007.08.15)
Timeline: At the moment, we plan to have development and QA work done on the new RegAPI the end of September.

Features: With the first release of the new RegAPI, you will be able to:
* Assign groups. NOTE: Group sign-ups will be automated ... users do not have to "accept" groups.
* Set an improved start location
* Register people even if the grid is down (i.e. RegAPI will be up regardless if there is planned or unplanned grid downtime)
* Set initial inventory (hopefully). Avatars will start wearing the initial outfit (including HUDs) specified in the inventory ... like LL does on our orientation island. NOTE: I put the "hopefully" caveat on this one because there are some significant changes to the inventory transfer protocols that must be made before it can support the regAPI. We will do our best to get this into the first release of the RegAPI, but it might be added later. In my future updates, I will include updates on this.

Future Features: The following are being considered for future releases of the new RegAPI:
* Provide additional avatar choices
* Flag users as only accessing a specific sim, estate, PG / M, or custom list of locations
* A Test Production Server
* Registrar Management API:
**update the TOS messaging that people see
**close or transfer accounts (i.e. Create accounts and keep ownership of them for 'staff/employment' use)
**Track HTTP Referrer via regAPI users
**manage load-balancing start locations
* Add "Verify Me" functions
* Enable Flash-based RegAPI use

We <b>strongly recommend</b> you join the regapi mailing list to share information and send inquiries about the existing and new regAPI to others (regapi@lists.secondlife.com). To join, go to https://lists.secondlife.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/regapi.

Will the new version of the regAPI break old applications that use the original implementation?
*A: No, good news, the new version will not break the old applications using the original implementation. Existing applications will continue to run but we will stop granting new access to it. Now, the maybe not so good news, the old version will be considered deprecated and will not be compatible with the new API. When we launch the new API, we will provide transition guidelines and encourage people to move to the new one.

Are there audit requirements on user acknowledgement of the TOS?
*A: Checking with legal on this. (Glenn Linden 5/18/07)

Are 3rd party registration sites required to provide a security image code confirmation function to prevent automated account registration attempts via their sites?
*Not yet but we will be able to require that with the new reg api. (Glenn Linden 5/18/07)

For purposes of clarification, what is an example of usage that is NOT permitted by the following statement?
* You may not use the Registration API other than as a means of collecting Account registration information from Your Website. (section 2.3.1 of API Terms of Use - http://secondlife.com/developers/api/tos.php)
* A: The primarly limitation is against using it to create accounts that are used by a single person to get around our other account limitations or for fraud. (Glenn Linden 5/18/07)

Is there an ID number for the custom name? It looks like this is required by the API for account creation.
*A: You should be able to acquire your custom name in the name queue for last names returned by the RegAPI - and then go into the list of returned names to see the ID number for it. This may take a little coding. (Glenn Linden 06/26/07)

I get the message "An fatal error has occurred (error ticket #NNNNN). Please visit the support section at http://secondlife.com/support/ for further assistance. Note this error ticket code and a description of the problem."
*A: Usually you get this because you are providing improperly formatted data in the RegAPI. RegAPI error codes will tell you if you've sent bad data, but not if its misformatted. For example, using * instead of - to seprate elements of the date will give a server error rather than a RegAPI error. ( For the date example, the data is misformatted since the problem is the separator. It was neither an invalid date (31 Feb) - error 100(not a valid date) - nor a malformed string (07 instead of 2007) - error 110(Date string is malformed)--both of which report problems with the digits.)

Can I limit accounts to an Estate (island)?
You can limit accounts to an estate using the RegAPI:

create_user (POST) Creates a new Second Life user

POST to this url a LLSD XML document, representing a hash, containing at least "username" (string), "last_name_id" (integer), "email" (string), "dob" (string in YYYY-MM-DD format), "password" (string)

Optional arguments are "limited_to_estate" (integer), "start_region_name" (string), "start_local_x" (float between 0-128), "start_local_y", "start_local_z", "start_look_at_x" (float between 0-1), "start_look_at_y", "start_look_at_z"

If all is successful, a hash containing the new user's agent_id will be returned. If there are errors, instead an array containing the applicable error codes will be returned.

Estate number (integer) needs to be provided in the Post.

How do I close accounts I've created with the RegAPI?
An employee has left, or you otherwise need to close an account you've created with the RegAPI. To do that, you'll have to contact the Concierge team and have them either change the password or close the account.

Couldn't resolve host 'URI_CREATE_USER'
You need to define those in your php file. Here's an example:

// Capability URLs
// see https://secure-web3.secondlife.com/developers/third_party_reg/
define('URI_CREATE_USER', 'https://cap.secondlife.com/cap/0/12345678-abcd-ef12-1234567812345');
define('URI_GET_LAST_NAMES', 'https://cap.secondlife.com/cap/0/12345678-abcd-ef12-12345678a5678');
define('URI_CHECK_NAME', 'https://cap.secondlife.com/cap/0/12345678-abcd-ef12-12345678b9abc');

Is there a way to provide a direct secondlife binary download from my website ?
We've recently launched a service that I think will help you out. Try going to http://get.secondlife.com. This fetches you the latest version of the client for your operating system, no questions asked.

It guesses your OS based on your user-agent, so if you're using curl or something that doesn't have a user-agent, it'll return an HTTP 400.

If you're using a script, though, you can hit a specific OS-version:
* Windows:
http://get.secondlife.com/win
* Mac:
http://get.secondlife.com/mac
* Linux:
http://get.secondlife.com/linux
* If you input an OS that we don't support, then it'll return a 404.
