A Public Nightly build is a viewer that was built from an internal code branch automatically overnight and distributed to a small group of alpha-tester Residents. (The group is affectionately named "Battery Street Irregulars" or BSI.)

These nightly builds lead up to Release Candidate viewers, but may contain glaring bugs as they are not always fully tested by Linden Lab's QA team. Only dedicated residents who want to experiment with new features and help Linden Lab engineers to resolve challenging bugs should download them.

Nightly builds of the viewer will connect to the main LIVE Second Life Grid. All user information, L$, content, land and other transactions are REAL.

If you're interested in becoming a member of Battery Street Irregulars to receive these builds, please
# create a notecard with your name, email address, and system configuration/details.
# Save the notecard as your avatar's name.
# Drop the notecard on the profile of "Cake Linden."
# Waiting for Godot.
We will add you to the Battery Street Irregulars group inworld and an email list for communication with the team.

OpenSim regions cannot be placed directly adjacent to existing regions on aditi or vaak.

:Zha Ewry: "Setup as a very basic stand alone opensim. set the default location and the location of your region to be the same value, and run only one region on the server. (ie. in OpenSim.ini, make sure you set default_loc_x and default_loc_y, and make them match the ones in the default.xml in the Regions subdirectory of you r bin directory in your install."

All units are in reference OpenSim's coordinate system.

If you set regions adjacent to one another, you will see some odd effects, depending on if you had visited the adjacent region. If you haven't visited the adjacent region, it will not appear in your map or camera view. And you will be unable to cross over to it by walking or flying.

To avoid the effect, select an offset of at least one unit from other sims. On the other hand, it's an interesting effect.

Non-Linden Lab OpenSims should use default_loc_x and default_loc_y values greater than 2304 (Note Change).

Map claims should be unique. Otherwise teleport failures will occur if you try to jump between regions at the same X/Y coordinates.

For those who want to play with SSL: It's configured and the certificate is signed with the junkCA, the viewer connects fine to https://lexa.ath.cx:9001 but it works even without adding the CA certificate to the viewer's CA.pem, so something is not working as it should... and it breaks teleports from vaak to my region. Teleports between OpenSim regions work fine though. Feel free to experiment with it.
Voice on Linux: Step-by-step instructions
Technical Background
Voice in Second Life uses Vivox technology that is based on RTP (using the oRTP library), SIP (using the amsip library from Antisip), OpenAL, TinyXPath, OpenSSL, and libcurl for the transmission of voice data. The positional 3D audio is achieved with technology from DiamondWare. These technologies are contained in external daemon software that is started and stopped by the Second Life client.

You can find the official ViVox documentation on the JIRA.

The SecondLife viewer handles configuration, control, and display functions, but the voice streams (from the microphone and from the Vivox voice server) do not enter the viewer. Unfortunately the source code for the external SLVoice daemon is not available due to contractual obligations between Linden Lab and Vivox.
