Who I am in SL
A bookbinder and a scriptwriter. I do some building, but haven't had enough time to build what I would like.
Who I am in RL
Way too many years programming, but I love to teach. Of all the things I have done, teaching has been the most satisfying.
I have developed software using more than 30 different computer languages and have been a core developer on many operating systems.
Things I do or have done:
- Design complex computer networks
- Hardware/software systems design & integration
- Teach university level courses
- R&D for networks
Please note that while my name is German and my family was born in Germany, I no longer speak the language well enough to teach in German. My family left Germany long ago and I haven't spoken German in many, many years. Bitte frag mich nicht zu lehren Sie Scripting in Deutsch.
What I would like to do in SL
A number of months ago I developed the concept of "intelligent books". These are books and other information objects that change their behaviors based on the needs and desired of of the person using them. Things like a book that automatically switches languages for the reader or possibly gets converted to audio if the reader has said they are hearing impaired. There are many challenges in this area including some that SL does not allow solutions for. Finding alternate methods is "interesting".
An extension of this work is a kiosk or tutorial board that would change it's language (including all the button labels) based on the desires of the person standing in front of it. I feel this could provide a great deal of help to people in SL. Not everyone speaks English.
Just for fun in RL
Try thinking in three dimensions:
- Puzzle World, but mostly six piece burrs.
Classic diners offer many interesting things. Here are some pointers along with other food related web spots:
- New England Diners
- Some of the best cookbooks and cooking magazines I have ever read.
- Lamy's Diner (scroll down) is part of the Henry Ford Museum. I used to have breakfast there once a week when it was the local diner.
Just plain fun.
