08/20/2009 Question about organization names in Success Stories: It's not always clear to me whether an organization's official name in Japan is the phonetically translated version or the English version. Can I leave them in English?

"In fact, the inworld economy is so vibrant that that we saw over $360 million USD in user-to-user transactions in 2009 which makes Second Life one of the largest hubs for user-generated content in the world."

08/20/2009 Question about the use of "氏" by itself: In the Japanese translation of IBM case study, "氏" is sometimes used by itself, for instance, "氏のミッションは「さらにアクティブ且つ自主的に活動できるようIBMアカデミーを変換」させることで、<snip>" or "しかしVirtual World Conferenceに参加したすぐ後だったため、氏とリーダーシップ・チームは、大規模会議を現実世界で物理的に開く必要性はないと判断しました". In my opinion, this usage of "氏" is strange. Can I change it to "同氏" or "xxx (xxx=appropriate last name; in the above examples, Martin)氏"?

08/20/2009 Question about the gender specific pronoun "彼女": Again, in the IBM case study, suddenly "彼女" appears, for instance, "Joanne Martin氏は仮想会議の正当性について、全ては人と人が関わり合うこと、ネットワーキングである、と述べています。 それはIBMアカデミーのプレジデントとしての彼女のミッションであり、Second Lifeで彼女のビジョンが現実となったのです。" The use of this gender specific pronoun is very inconsistent with the rest of the case studies. Can I change it to "Martin氏"?

Question about the translation of Northrop Grumman: Of all the success stories, this company name is the only one (so far) that has been translated into katakana (ノースロップ・グラマン). Is this correct/preferred/intentional?

Answer: Yes, it is intentional. As their Japanese pages (this pdf for example) have the company name in Katakana with a dot in the middle, I followed it.

Question about the usage of a dot (・) to separate katakana words: In some of the existing translations of success stories, dots are heavily used, for instance: ノースロップ・グラマン or マルチメディア・データ・ストリーミング. However, in some of the success stories (specifically, those I have translated), dots aren't used this way. Do we need to make the dot usage consistent across the case study text?

Answer: Thank you for bringing this to my attention. In reply, no, we don't need to. I've been following the usage of a dot the previous translation vendor was using in between Katakana. (We don't have their TM or Glossary) However I started feeling it's a bit too much to see dots all over the place, especially when there're many Katakana words in cases. I would like to shift towards minimum usage of dots within Katakana.
