Transcript of Oskar Linden's Beta Server Office Hour for September 29th, 2011:
- [15:00] Motor Loon: Motor Loon throws a tasty bone out for Coyot
- [15:00] Coyot Linden: hi
- [15:01] SMILE (sigma.avro): hello
- [15:01] Coyot Linden: So, Oskar is not going to be here today. :)
- [15:01] Talia Malaspina: That bastage!
- [15:01] Maestro Linden: alright guys
- [15:01] Maestro Linden: I've just updated this section:
- [15:01] Maestro Linden: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Server_Beta_User_Group#Updates
- [15:01] Motor Loon: running for coffee
- [15:01] Jacky Scharf: Uhhh? No OH? :-(
- [15:01] Coyot Linden: Maestor will lead
- [15:01] Gooden Uggla: the prim is a lie
- [15:01] Vincent Nacon: NO COFFEE!? RAGE!
- [15:02] Jacky Scharf: Ahhh ... great. °͜°
- [15:02] Maestro Linden: So, how's everybody doing?
- [15:02] Talia Malaspina: I'm doing great!
- [15:02] Gooden Uggla: it's not august 18th anymore :P
- [15:02] Gooden Uggla: hiya maestro
- [15:02] Maestro Linden: Alright! Let's get started
- [15:03] Motor Loon: 3 2 1 go!
- [15:03] Homeless Resident (homeless): take it away Maestro!
- [15:03] Maestro Linden: So, first off, let's do the server summary
- [15:03] Maestro Linden: so, last week's Bluesteel got promoted to the main channel this week
- [15:03] Maestro Linden: it only had the fix for SVC-7283
- [15:03] Coyot Linden: \o/
- [15:03] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7283] llRemoteLoadScriptPin and llGiveInventory fail when installing non-full perm items into worn attachments https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7283
- [15:03] xstorm Radek: bluesteel has some gliches with apche2
- [15:03] Maestro Linden: the other RC channels also had that fix, but they had some bugs that came up
- [15:03] Maestro Linden: oh?
- [15:03] Maestro Linden: well, let's get back to that in a bit
- [15:04] xstorm Radek: seen bluesteel sim not wishing to restart
- [15:04] Maestro Linden: LeTigre and Magnum are pretty much the same as last week
- [15:04] Maestro Linden: both of them have bugfixes
- [15:04] Maestro Linden: LeTigre got fixes for SVC-7303, SVC-7305, as well as a crash fix
- [15:04] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7303] borked LeTigre 11.09.09.240509 install, server placing anything rezzed with velocity at <0,0,0> https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7305
- [15:04] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7305] the PRIM_PHYSICS switch for llSetPrimitiveParams and associated functions is broken https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7305
- [15:04] Maestro Linden: Magnum's bugs.. wouldn't be publically visible :)
- [15:05] Maestro Linden: not yet, anyway
- [15:05] Coyot Linden: wait for it....!
- [15:05] Rex Cronon: hello people
- [15:05] Maestro Linden: Hi Rex
- [15:05] Coyot Linden: hi Rex
- [15:05] Motor Loon: ticking bomb eh
- [15:05] xstorm Radek: hi rex
- [15:05] Talia Malaspina: HI Rex
- [15:05] SMILE (sigma.avro): haya
- [15:05] Maestro Linden: so we also have a new project on BlueSteel, which we've talked about here before
- [15:05] Maestro Linden: it has Andrew's LSL speed tweaks
- [15:05] Rex Cronon: hi maestro, coyot, xstorm, talia
- [15:05] xstorm Radek: is thee physics problems viewer side ?
- [15:05] Maestro Linden: and also has all the stuff on LeTigre
- [15:06] Latif Khalifa: it also has some new crashers ;)
- [15:06] Coyot Linden: XD
- [15:06] Maestro Linden: *ahem* yes
- [15:06] Maestro Linden: well, 1 new crasher that I know about
- [15:06] Coyot Linden: SEC-954
- [15:06] Coyot Linden: oh, wait, sorry
- [15:06] xstorm Radek: chashing is it user side or server ?
- [15:06] Maestro Linden: well, most of you can't see that =P
- [15:06] Latif Khalifa: who submitted taht?
- [15:06] Pauline Darkfury: SEC-974
- [15:07] Latif Khalifa: ah pauline, ok so that's the same one i heard about
- [15:07] Maestro Linden: ^ pauline did
- [15:07] Coyot Linden: yeah, Pauline has the number right
- [15:07] Coyot Linden: sry
- [15:07] Maestro Linden: thanks for that, btw
- [15:07] Pauline Darkfury: Yup, but I should say you didn't hear specific details from me, just that there was a crasher…
- [15:07] Maestro Linden: anyway, this weeks' BlueSteel can't get promoted next week, but hopefully we'll have that crasher fixed
- [15:08] Coyot Linden: by the way, Pauline, I moved your regions to LeTigre so that you don't crash so much
- [15:08] Maestro Linden: heh honestly Pauline, it's hard enough to trigger the crash without a particular object that it's probably not all that dangerous to mention =P
- [15:08] F L I P (flip.idlemind): What about this week's LeTigre? Can it get promoted? I know some people (me) are about ready for physical objects to stop freezing when selected
- [15:08] Pauline Darkfury: Hehe, true
- [15:08] Pauline Darkfury: Thanks, Coyot
- [15:08] Coyot Linden: yw
- [15:08] Motor Loon: soooo waiting for the letigre stuff
- [15:08] Maestro Linden: Maybe, Flip. So far I haven't heard of anything wrong in LeTigre
- [15:08] F L I P (flip.idlemind): Wooty
- [15:08] Coyot Linden: Our choices will be:
- [15:08] Coyot Linden: LT
- [15:08] Motor Loon: ¸.•´¸.•*¨) ¸.•*¨) (¨*•.¸(¨*•.¸´•.¸
- [15:08] Motor Loon: -:¦:-.•:*¨¨*:•WooHoo!!•:*¨¨*:•.-:¦:-
- [15:08] Motor Loon: ¸.•´¸.•*¨) ¸.•*¨) (¨*•.¸(¨*•.¸´•.¸
- [15:08] Coyot Linden: Magnum
- [15:08] Coyot Linden: nothing
- [15:09] Coyot Linden: one of those three
- [15:09] Talia Malaspina: Talia Malaspina eeps.
- [15:09] Maestro Linden: fixing svc-7303 and svc-7305 should be a relief to some folks too
- [15:09] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7303] borked LeTigre 11.09.09.240509 install, server placing anything rezzed with velocity at <0,0,0> https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7305
- [15:09] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7305] the PRIM_PHYSICS switch for llSetPrimitiveParams and associated functions is broken https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7305
- [15:09] Talia Malaspina: sorry!!
- [15:09] Vincent Nacon: nice legs
- [15:09] Talia Malaspina: heehe!
- [15:09] Maestro Linden: (7303 was a regression in LeTigre, but 7305 is grid-wide)
- [15:09] Pauline Darkfury: hmm, freeze on select is actually useful sometimes
- [15:09] Talia Malaspina: I have about a dozen things in inventory just called "mesh model" grr
- [15:09] Maestro Linden: Well, it's not totally disabled, Pauline. It depends on your avatar's permissions
- [15:10] Motor Loon: EM and obj. owners can still freeze Pauline
- [15:10] Maestro Linden: or if you're a rider on a vehicle, you can always freeze that
- [15:10] Pauline Darkfury: 7303 & 7305 are urgent
- [15:10] xstorm Radek: i think freez on select needs to stay
- [15:10] Latif Khalifa: Pauline, new rules are very sensible. Only freezes when owener select physical object (or people that have move right)
- [15:10] Lucia Nightfire: I thought 7305 was fixed on all RC channels as I tested it today, mc still didn't work
- [15:10] Pauline Darkfury: Hmm, shouldn't it be EM, obj owner, and anyone with return rights
- [15:10] xstorm Radek: oor you will have griefers using it
- [15:10] Vincent Nacon: I'd leave it alone as it is now
- [15:11] Vincent Nacon: because race track managers still use that trick to stop abusers
- [15:11] Rex Cronon: why not make it to be able to freeze anything, but u have to pay 10L$ to the owner for each object u freeze:)
- [15:11] Maestro Linden: well Lucia, Bluesteel also has the LeTigre changes.. I don't think Magnum has the 7305 fix though
- [15:11] Vincent Nacon: it got pro and con
- [15:11] Vincent Nacon: so it need something else
- [15:11] Lucia Nightfire: I tested it in Mauve which is Magnum and it worked
- [15:11] Pauline Darkfury: Not letting landowners freeze opens abuse cases, tbh
- [15:11] Gooden Uggla: it's nice to be able to stop moving prims to return them
- [15:11] Vincent Nacon: I know... it need something else instead of switching that over
- [15:12] Maestro Linden: good call, Rex. I wish car horns charged $1 each time somebody held theirs down :)
- [15:12] Talia Malaspina: For $10 per freeze, I'd be much more likely to press the line of griefer with my annoying objects.
- [15:12] Pauline Darkfury: If an object jumps back and forth between your land and elsewhere rapidly, it could become extremely hard to return
- [15:12] xstorm Radek: plus if your in linden admin mode you need that freez to remove item from inventory
- [15:12] Maestro Linden: Then you can disable object entry, I suppose
- [15:12] Vincent Nacon: or a wall
- [15:12] Latif Khalifa: once object entry prohibition works :P
- [15:13] Pauline Darkfury: If you have 20+ parcels, disabling objectg entry or changing parcel perms to catch an object like that is a major pain
- [15:13] xstorm Radek: plus removing a object uuid
- [15:13] Maestro Linden: So, aside from Pauline's crasher, how are the RCs looking so far?
- [15:13] Liisa Runo: SCR-19 will make it easy to return
- [15:13] Flame of Jira: [#SCR-19] Script function to return objects https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SCR-19
- [15:13] Gooden Uggla: i can see a whole new jumping line of griefing objects coming to a store near you...
- [15:14] xstorm Radek: stop that there are no new riefers
- [15:14] Latif Khalifa: i think it's a very good change. one could argue griefing potential in just about anything
- [15:14] Gooden Uggla: also, cage orbits will make a comeback
- [15:14] Vincent Nacon: it can be abused in both ways... it need something else
- [15:14] xstorm Radek: plus with no Gteam there can not be griefers lol
- [15:14] Gooden Uggla: mhmm
- [15:15] xstorm Radek: nnooo
- [15:15] Coyot Linden: So we'll know ore after a meeting tomorrow, but right now it is a toss up as to whether LT or Magnum gets promoted
- [15:15] Oskars Throne: You are not authorized for Oskar's Throne
- [15:15] Oskars Throne: You have 5 seconds until you are booted.
- [15:15] Oskars Throne: 5
- [15:15] Oskars Throne: 4
- [15:15] Coyot Linden: But it looks like one of them will.
- [15:15] Oskars Throne: 3
- [15:15] Vincent Nacon: llGetMassMKS, can we talk about that?
- [15:15] Oskars Throne: 2
- [15:15] Oskars Throne: 1
- [15:15] Oskars Throne: Oskars Throne doesn't like Motor Loon
- [15:15] Homeless Resident (homeless): the only way to get rid of griefers is to disallow logins..
- [15:15] Maestro Linden: sure Vincent
- [15:15] Talia Malaspina: Talia Malaspina points and laughs
- [15:15] xstorm Radek: lol
- [15:15] Coyot Linden: ha
- [15:15] Rex Cronon: if u wear a flight assist u might be able to get out of orbit cages
- [15:15] Maestro Linden: so llGetMassMKS() is just like llGetMass()
- [15:16] Maestro Linden: except that the new function returns in units of kg
- [15:16] Vincent Nacon: much as I'd support it.... but for the stake of LSL in general, it's ugly
- [15:16] xstorm Radek: well the chair worked
- [15:16] Maestro Linden: whereas llGetMass() used units of 100kg
- [15:16] Gooden Uggla: homeless, i don't assume griefing can be ended, but why re-enable all the old griefing tools?
- [15:16] Maestro Linden: so it just returns 100x the value that llGetMass() would return
- [15:16] Vincent Nacon: yes, instead of giving us new Mass function, just fix Density in old Mass' unit as "lindogram"
- [15:17] Ponyboy Enigma (ponyboy.galaxy): Hey guize. I'm having an issue. And, if you tell me I should contact support, I think that would be perfectly reasonable. However, I did, and they said my issue doesn't fall into the category of things they can help me with unless I pay for premium
- [15:17] Maestro Linden: well, the viewer is starting to show units, for density
- [15:17] Ponyboy Enigma (ponyboy.galaxy): Here's a JIRA for it: WEB-511
- [15:17] Flame of Jira: [#WEB-511] "Friends' Page incorrectly reporting avatars online https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-511
- [15:17] Vincent Nacon: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/CTS-573
- [15:17] Flame of Jira: [#CTS-573] Incorrect Prim Density Value https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/CTS-573
- [15:17] Coyot Linden: oh cthulhu help us, no lindogram
- [15:17] Maestro Linden: you can still use llGetMass(), of course
- [15:17] Vincent Nacon: I know.
- [15:17] Vincent Nacon: but...
- [15:17] Maestro Linden: a default prim is 1000kg/m^3, the same as water
- [15:17] Vincent Nacon: using density with llGetMass isn't correct
- [15:17] xstorm Radek: lol
- [15:17] Motor Loon: Motor Loon giggles
- [15:17] Vincent Nacon: so I'm saying change density to 10"lindogram"/m^3
- [15:18] Maestro Linden: and you can tweak that with either the build tool or llSetPhysicsMaterials()
- [15:18] SMILE (sigma.avro): I would prefer llGetVolume
- [15:18] Rex Cronon: what would bring back orbiting cages?
- [15:18] Maestro Linden: well, that woudl also work, vincent
- [15:18] Talia Malaspina: llRezOrbitCage(key id)
- [15:18] Lucia Nightfire: lol
- [15:18] Vincent Nacon: right... so it's better not to make it more awkward
- [15:18] Rex Cronon: haha. a special function:)
- [15:18] Gooden Uggla: the inability to click them to stop them
- [15:19] Rex Cronon: ok. got it
- [15:19] Vincent Nacon: because you can't update llGetMass without new mass fucntion
- [15:19] Maestro Linden: honestly I don't think it matters much either way, as long as we're consistent with the units shown
- [15:19] Maestro Linden: well, we wouldn't want to change what llGetMass() returns for a given object
- [15:19] Motor Loon: no, pls dont do that
- [15:19] Vincent Nacon: I know, that's why it's awkward now
- [15:19] Maestro Linden: since a lot of scripts using physics are already tuned to the existing values
- [15:19] Motor Loon: Motor Loon agrees, since his scripts are
- [15:20] Vincent Nacon: I'm suggesting to fix Density instead of new Mass function
- [15:20] Maestro Linden: anyway, if you call llGetMassMKS() on a 1m cube, you'll get 1000
- [15:20] Vincent Nacon: I know
- [15:20] xstorm Radek: mass return never works right all the time
- [15:20] Maestro Linden: which matches the density
- [15:20] Vincent Nacon: I know....
- [15:20] Maestro Linden: which is nice
- [15:20] Gooden Uggla: next month's quota for the lab breaking things hasn't been used up yet...
- [15:20] lonetorus Habilis: xstorm, so ppl have tuned it to its non functionality ;)
- [15:20] xstorm Radek: and you do not wish to do sim rollbacks thats a no no
- [15:21] Maestro Linden: though, actually, viewer3 incorrectly shows the units as "100kg/m^3", which should just be "kg/m^3"
- [15:21] Vincent Nacon: and awkward for those realized llGetMass and llGetMassMKS aren't the same thing
- [15:21] Vincent Nacon: for new scripters would think "wtf is this?"
- [15:21] Gooden Uggla: ummm maestro? any chance it can wait till the viewer is fixed?
- [15:21] Rex Cronon: doesn't mass depend on material?
- [15:22] Vincent Nacon: no
- [15:22] Lucia Nightfire: CoR does
- [15:22] Vincent Nacon: density
- [15:22] Latif Khalifa: it depends on density
- [15:22] Lucia Nightfire: but that can also be altered
- [15:22] Maestro Linden: it would be awkward to hold up the project based on the viewer behavior.. they're on their own schedule
- [15:22] Vincent Nacon: and volume as well
- [15:22] Rex Cronon: well the density of gold should be higher than the desity of wood:)
- [15:22] Fellony Lock Pick Hud: Reading pickconfig note card....
- [15:22] Fellony Lock Pick Hud: Reading pickconfig note card....
- [15:22] Vincent Nacon: right...?
- [15:22] Motor Loon: goldwood?
- [15:22] Talia Malaspina: I just wish we could reduce the density of certain people.
- [15:22] xstorm Radek: hold on if there is a error in the reading for mass then it can mess up physic too
- [15:22] Latif Khalifa: yes, so a cubic meter of gold has much more mass than a cubic meter of wood
- [15:22] SMILE (sigma.avro): yes, and getvolume would be more handy than a new funtion that only.....
- [15:22] Maestro Linden: it depends on the 'physics material' parameter
- [15:22] Lucia Nightfire: and teh density of Osmium shouldn;'t be the limit for density since CoR and CoF have unnatural limits, heh
- [15:23] Gooden Uggla: so you're going to push ahead with a project that you know will break a lotta things for people using the recent viewers?
- [15:23] Ponyboy Enigma (ponyboy.galaxy): So, yeah, my dashboard friends list (the one on the website) is "disabled", and has been for about a week. I guess I could always just log in, but I like to know who's on beforehand. Halp?
- [15:23] Rex Cronon: and we can change the physics material. using lsl. right?
- [15:23] xstorm Radek: fix the viewer please or people will post a ton of jiras
- [15:23] Vincent Nacon: change density, yes
- [15:23] Maestro Linden: Sorry Ponyboy, I'm not too familiar with secondlife.com stuff
- [15:24] Gooden Uggla: ponyboy, the webservice team at the lab is slow, incompetent and unresponsive, send in a ticket and be prepared to wait 3 months
- [15:24] Pauline Darkfury: Ponyboy, this meeting is 99.9% server stuff (sim servers, not web servers)
- [15:24] Vincent Nacon: material drop down menu isn't the same thing with the physic
- [15:24] Maestro Linden: yeah Rex, that's new in LeTigre and Bluesteel
- [15:24] Motor Loon: o.O
- [15:24] Ponyboy Enigma (ponyboy.galaxy): T_T
- [15:24] Maestro Linden: llSetPhysicsMaterial()
- [15:24] Gooden Uggla: like we did for trans history when they broke it
- [15:24] Vincent Nacon: they're mostly friction
- [15:24] Ponyboy Enigma (ponyboy.galaxy): Aww ok, well I did contact support, and they were like "Gimmie moneyz!"
- [15:24] Maestro Linden: you can change fun stuff like gravity, friction, and restitution there as well
- [15:24] Rex Cronon: cool:)
- [15:25] xstorm Radek: yes just please no crashing the physics
- [15:25] Maestro Linden: also you can change prim physics shape in those branches too.. I think we covered the parameters a few weeks ago
- [15:25] xstorm Radek: i hate that
- [15:25] Pauline Darkfury: Ponybox, check the "User Groups" page on the wiki, there's probably somewhere that your issue might be on-topic
- [15:25] Talia Malaspina: I prefer Non Frictino.
- [15:25] Maestro Linden: me too xstorm
- [15:25] Gooden Uggla: have someone who's premium test it and see if it works for them
- [15:25] Vincent Nacon: we're not crashing anything
- [15:25] Pauline Darkfury: SOrry, typo'd your name, unintentional
- [15:25] Rex Cronon: why isn't llSetPhysicsMaterial() listed here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Category:LSL_Functions
- [15:25] Rex Cronon: ?
- [15:25] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Too new?
- [15:25] Maestro Linden: Because Falcon is lazy
- [15:26] Maestro Linden: yes, also it's new
- [15:26] xstorm Radek: lol
- [15:26] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): /m chuckles
- [15:26] xstorm Radek: please no pick on falcon
- [15:26] Motor Loon: hehe
- [15:26] Maestro Linden: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_RC_LeTigre/11#11.09.23.241511
- [15:26] Maestro Linden: ^ has the function descriptions
- [15:26] xstorm Radek: he will have his hands full soon
- [15:26] Rex Cronon: that is why i asked if we had the lsl function to change material, because i couldn't find it there
- [15:26] Vincent Nacon: well excuse me for assuming Falcon is the physic expert... maybe I should take his job
- [15:26] Vincent Nacon: muhahahaha!
- [15:27] Gooden Uggla: maestro has anyone tested it on breedables to see which one it will effect?
- [15:27] xstorm Radek: you do not wish to have his job
- [15:27] Vincent Nacon: sure I do
- [15:27] Maestro Linden: there's also a PRIM_MATERIAL parameter you can use to set a prim to 'wood' or something, but that doesn't have nearly as much of a direct impact on physics behavior
- [15:27] Vincent Nacon: yeah those are friction
- [15:28] Gooden Uggla: not to be a downer, but i foresee a huge number of tickets and JIRAs
- [15:28] Maestro Linden: what do you mean, gooden?
- [15:28] Talia Malaspina: llSetLinkPrimitiveParams PRIM_MATERIAL
- [15:28] Vincent Nacon: no density or any of that sort
- [15:28] Homeless Resident (homeless): I never understood what those materials were for anyway
- [15:28] Vincent Nacon: just friction
- [15:28] Talia Malaspina: And sound, when they hit the ground. Or so I've been told.
- [15:28] Maestro Linden: if the breedables makers are using llSetPhysicsMaterial(), it's up to them to use proper parameters that make their animals work well
- [15:28] Vincent Nacon: rubber used to have some bounce in later date
- [15:28] xstorm Radek: not any more the setting worked better when we was back when it first was put in the viewer
- [15:28] Gooden Uggla: didn't you just say that the new viewer won't trasnlate the server gravity etc properly?
- [15:28] Maestro Linden: well, you could make an ice rink with low friction
- [15:28] Coyot Linden: We are living in a PRIM_MATERIAL world...
- [15:28] Homeless Resident (homeless): I've heard about the sound part... but they all sound the same to me
- [15:29] Maestro Linden: and then horses would ice skate on it
- [15:29] Talia Malaspina: heehe!
- [15:29] Maestro Linden: which would be pretty fun to watch, honestly :)
- [15:29] xstorm Radek: but then again its like any thing like land shaping bombs was good at one time
- [15:29] Rex Cronon: i imagine a hippo skating:)
- [15:29] SMILE (sigma.avro): haha
- [15:29] Gooden Uggla: horse owners saw them skate right before the kent8ucky derby
- [15:29] Nal (nalates.urriah): We have to talk LDPW into putting black ice on the roads...
- [15:30] Motor Loon: Simsized airhockey tables...
- [15:30] xstorm Radek: lol
- [15:30] xstorm Radek: hey
- [15:30] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): I Imagine a cow on Ice, having been described by a Marine Sgt as being that Graceful.
- [15:30] xstorm Radek: no poke me
- [15:30] Maestro Linden: anyway, the scriptable physics materials will be handy for vehicles and such
- [15:30] Maestro Linden: falcon was saying that in other games,
- [15:30] Rex Cronon: bullets:)
- [15:31] Maestro Linden: it's common for cars to have high gravity while on the road, and low gravity on jumps
- [15:31] xstorm Radek: well thats good will it let me fly off world again from sim to island ?
- [15:31] Motor Loon: jumping cars... yeah...
- [15:31] Maestro Linden: oh and..
- [15:31] xstorm Radek: lol
- [15:31] SMILE (sigma.avro): an sl specialty
- [15:31] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Kallista Arliss refrans from talking about Falcon's understanding of games.
- [15:31] Maestro Linden: apparently, setting gravity is a lot more efficient on the physics engine than using llSetBuoyancy()
- [15:32] Latif Khalifa: Kallista: s/of games//
- [15:32] Latif Khalifa: :P
- [15:32] xstorm Radek: yes i know why
- [15:32] Coyot Linden: Set Buoy, Set!
- [15:32] Maestro Linden: Ok, let's see... what else is new
- [15:32] xstorm Radek: odd lag in sim again
- [15:32] Maestro Linden: Oskar talked about the timewarp fix, where we're updating the kernel version on sim hosts
- [15:32] Vincent Nacon: I noticed llSetVelocity was added as well but it seem to be same as llApplyImpulse
- [15:32] Coyot Linden: ah, yes
- [15:33] Maestro Linden: I believe all sims on aditi (including this one) now run the new kernel
- [15:33] Vincent Nacon: but the difference is the object's engery?
- [15:33] Coyot Linden: that's correct
- [15:33] Coyot Linden: maestro
- [15:33] Maestro Linden: we'll look out for odd crashes, though it shouldn't affect inworld behavior much
- [15:33] Vincent Nacon: not sure how much of a difference that make
- [15:33] xstorm Radek: so timewarp is fix ?
- [15:33] Maestro Linden: Coyot, can you talk about the deploy plan for the kernel update?
- [15:33] Coyot Linden: There will be restarts on agni next week as we upgrade the kernel
- [15:33] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): I'm impressed at how quickly y'all managed that.
- [15:33] Vincent Nacon: aye
- [15:33] Coyot Linden: Much of this will be in off hours SLT
- [15:34] Maestro Linden: xstorm, we think that it'll be fixed in the vast majority of cases, but of course we won't know until we have it out.
- [15:34] Coyot Linden: The kernel upgrade should relieve most of the TW issues
- [15:34] Coyot Linden: and we are *hoping* it is a complete fix
- [15:34] Coyot Linden: but we will see
- [15:35] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Could you make that coincidental with the Simulator switches, ... Oh of course noew because not all of the reions on a servr will be at the same code.
- [15:35] xstorm Radek: what part will that fix have on rounding up the math on a sim when it restarts to cut down on prim drift ?
- [15:35] F L I P (flip.idlemind): What kinda down time are we talkin? Better or Worse than the old upgrade Wednesdays (Which I technically wasn't around for, so I may not know what I'm talking about)
- [15:35] Coyot Linden: I don't think that's related, xstorm
- [15:35] Coyot Linden: So, flip
- [15:35] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): So we can n general expect every region to restart twice next week?
- [15:36] Coyot Linden: Yes, Kallista, exactly
- [15:36] Coyot Linden: and the kernel one should be very brief
- [15:36] xstorm Radek: so sims may still have a small bit of drift ?
- [15:36] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): well I;m finally instrumented to watch down tim.
- [15:36] Gooden Uggla: upgrade wednesdays were a particular kind of hell that you're better off not remembering...
- [15:36] Vincent Nacon: relax, sim restarting or rebooting so often was once normal back 4 years ago
- [15:36] Vincent Nacon: muhahahaha!
- [15:36] Coyot Linden: because the region will come back up with the same code version, no change
- [15:36] Maestro Linden: Coyot, do you know if they'll simply restart the regions to empty a host, before installing the new kernel?
- [15:36] Wolfpup (wolfpup.lowenhar): that is so true gooden
- [15:36] Maestro Linden: or will the regions be down through the host reboot?
- [15:37] Gooden Uggla: i have the entire first half of 2008 blocked from memory
- [15:37] Coyot Linden: Yes, I think that's the plan, Maestro
- [15:37] xstorm Radek: server reboot for that i bet
- [15:37] Maestro Linden: yes.. restarting the regions?
- [15:37] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): hehehe dsck of 4 X 750 MB diskdrives.
- [15:37] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): fsck.
- [15:37] Coyot Linden: It depends on how much spare space is available
- [15:37] Maestro Linden: ok, but in either case it shouldn't be all that bad.
- [15:38] Coyot Linden: But yeah, Benoc is doing everything he
- [15:38] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): I'm sure the drives haven't been checked in ages.
- [15:38] Coyot Linden: can to minimize down time
- [15:38] Maestro Linden: let's see... the next item on the agenda is also release-y
- [15:38] Coyot Linden: Actually, Kallista, the drives are monitored 24x7
- [15:38] Maestro Linden: Coyot is rebalancing the RC channels
- [15:38] xstorm Radek: i hate to say this but i think some of the mainland servers can use a good restart
- [15:38] Gooden Uggla: ok maestro, "it won't be that bad" is the kernel update motto :)
- [15:38] Pauline Darkfury: Mmmmm, yeah, if they are ext2/ext3, there's likely to be some stuff can be fixed by fsck if it's been an age since it last ran
- [15:39] Maestro Linden: :)
- [15:39] Pauline Darkfury: I've yet to see an ext2/ext3 that doesn't gain some non-critical state corruption over time
- [15:39] Coyot Linden: Right, that's the homestead rebalance I talked about last timet
- [15:39] Maestro Linden: Right now, we have almost 0 homesteads on BlueSteel and LeTigre, and we have an excessive amount of homesteads on Magnum
- [15:39] Coyot Linden: still happening monday
- [15:39] Gooden Uggla: i just hope murphy isn't listening...
- [15:39] Maestro Linden: cool.
- [15:39] xstorm Radek: waterhead telehub prims are drifting out of place
- [15:39] Gooden Uggla: good news coyot, thanks
- [15:39] Coyot Linden: yw
- [15:40] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Oh I'm sure they are and are running the latest journaled Filesystem. but they still are schedulad to be actually FSCKed every so many days and so many reboots. and I expect that your servers are up for simply ages.
- [15:40] Gooden Uggla: maestro, oskar asked for homesteads on magnum, that's why'
- [15:40] Maestro Linden: yeah, we needed a bunch on Magnum for one of Kelly's LSL updates a few months bakc
- [15:40] xstorm Radek: eeeewww i hate homesteads lol
- [15:41] Coyot Linden: Gooden, that was to support testing of DRTSIM that was already released
- [15:41] Coyot Linden: same as what Maestro said
- [15:41] Maestro Linden: we really need all kinds of region on each RC... otherwise we won't catch certain bug that only affect certain types of regions
- [15:41] Coyot Linden: +1
- [15:41] Gooden Uggla: yup, and no one in their right mind puts homestead tenants on a RC
- [15:41] xstorm Radek: so many problems from homesteads
- [15:41] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): yeah, the migration to magnum was because something slipped through
- [15:41] Gooden Uggla: i donated my personal sim with the public surfing wave
- [15:42] Maestro Linden: let's see, what else is new
- [15:42] Gooden Uggla: when the wave stops running, i tell oskar :)
- [15:42] Maestro Linden: Falcon still has those regions up on aditi for keyframed animation testing
- [15:42] Maestro Linden: although I've heard there's been some talk about renaming the function,
- [15:42] Maestro Linden: because people who are familiar with character animation might get confused by the name
- [15:43] Nal (nalates.urriah): prolly a good idea
- [15:43] xstorm Radek: yes it will
- [15:43] Vincent Nacon: no it won't.....
- [15:43] Maestro Linden: also, we have another maint-server project coming up, which actually just got deployed to svc-7283
- [15:43] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7283] llRemoteLoadScriptPin and llGiveInventory fail when installing non-full perm items into worn attachments https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7283
- [15:43] Maestro Linden: durr to aditi
- [15:43] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Sorry Maestro I didn;t relize the taking a copy would unseat you
- [15:43] Vincent Nacon: we have had that sort of name before there was charactar animation
- [15:44] xstorm Radek: ?????? oh ???
- [15:44] Maestro Linden: no worries
- [15:44] Vincent Nacon: it's even in 3Ds Max
- [15:44] Maestro Linden: so the new maint-server has...
- [15:44] xstorm Radek: are you permited to talk about it ?
- [15:44] Maestro Linden: OBJECT_PRIM_EQUIVALENCE, OBJECT_SERVER_COST, OBJECT_STREAMING_COST, OBJECT_PHYSICS_COST for llGetObjectDetails
- [15:44] F L I P (flip.idlemind): Taking a copy actually takes the original and makes a copy (I think...)
- [15:44] Talia Malaspina: Yes
- [15:44] Maestro Linden: "X-SecondLife-Owner-Name" sometimes set to '(waiting)' instead of ownername
- [15:45] Maestro Linden: State changes considerably slower under Mono-LSL than LSO-LSL
- [15:45] Maestro Linden: llRemoteLoadScriptPin() does not allow injection of an O:VMCT script into an O:PERM_ALL worn attachment svc-7321
- [15:45] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7321] llRemoteLoadScriptPin() and llGiveInventory() do not allow injection of an O:VMCT item into an O:PERM_ALL worn attachment https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7321
- [15:45] Maestro Linden: svc-7294
- [15:45] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7294] The simulator is too strict when llGiveInventory() adds restricted-permission items to fullperm attachments which already contained other restricted-permission items https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7294
- [15:45] Maestro Linden: and some crash fixes
- [15:45] xstorm Radek: hhhmmm oject physics cost sounds like a new way to have people kicked from furnation sandbox lol
- [15:45] Maestro Linden: so those 2 permissions bugfixes will hopefully fix the rest of the problems around svc-7283
- [15:45] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7283] llRemoteLoadScriptPin and llGiveInventory fail when installing non-full perm items into worn attachments https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7283
- [15:45] Gooden Uggla: those broke a lotta attachments
- [15:46] SMILE (sigma.avro): true
- [15:46] Pauline Darkfury: I've seen X-SecondLife-Owner-Name show "Loading…", but not "waiting"
- [15:46] Maestro Linden: Once I'm sure that the bugfixes basically work, I'll probably invite people who still have problems to try it out on aditi
- [15:46] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): That was a disaster (7283)
- [15:47] Maestro Linden: yeah, it was certainly not fun
- [15:47] Coyot Linden: The
- [15:47] Coyot Linden: JIRA
- [15:47] Coyot Linden: That
- [15:47] Coyot Linden: Would
- [15:47] Coyot Linden: Not
- [15:47] Coyot Linden: Die
- [15:47] Pauline Darkfury: My main complaint with 7283 is it being broken for 14 days for most of the grid
- [15:47] Maestro Linden: with the initial 7283 fix, most commercial updaters seem to be fixed
- [15:48] Pauline Darkfury: Problems happen, SEC fixes can't be rolled back if the exploitability is high. That's life. 14 days to fix it, that's the real problem :(
- [15:48] Maestro Linden: but there are some edge cases which still fail, that those other 2 jiras hope to solve
- [15:48] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Well after getting bitten twice I don't blame them for being ultra cautious.
- [15:48] Gooden Uggla: yes paulinie
- [15:48] Gooden Uggla: SL is losing a few good creators from it
- [15:48] Coyot Linden: Perhaps I should address Pauline's point
- [15:48] Coyot Linden: Here's the thing
- [15:49] Coyot Linden: Either we play by the rules
- [15:49] Coyot Linden: and test our stuff thoroughly in sandboxes
- [15:49] Coyot Linden: aditi and RC
- [15:49] Coyot Linden: which takes about two weeks
- [15:49] Coyot Linden: OR
- [15:49] Coyot Linden: we just throw stuff over the wall
- [15:50] Coyot Linden: and hope it doesn't break anything further
- [15:50] Coyot Linden: so
- [15:50] Coyot Linden: while I understand your frustration with the two weeks
- [15:50] xstorm Radek: hey i love testing
- [15:50] Coyot Linden: really, we are doing it with the Residents best interest at heart
- [15:50] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): which we all recall was much worse WORSE.
- [15:50] Coyot Linden: making sure hotfixes don't have further breaks
- [15:51] Gooden Uggla: Coyot - here's the thing - when the lab breaks millions of L$ worth of items in a server roll, and the lab pretends that's not important, you lose the people who spend money and just keep the freebie wearers who don't care
- [15:51] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Kallista Arliss points at the number over her head. I suspect that this would not have made it out of RC.
- [15:51] xstorm Radek: no take away my testing
- [15:51] Pauline Darkfury: What I'd have liked to have seen is 24-48h of all-hands action to get a high-confidence hot-fix, then emergency deploy on a RC for 48h, then emergency deploy rest of grid
- [15:52] Coyot Linden: Gooden:
- [15:52] Pauline Darkfury: Sticking rigidly to rules is folly in critical situations with wide reaching impact (which had no workaround in some cases)
- [15:52] Gooden Uggla: acting sympathetic would get the lab a lot further in these cases
- [15:52] Coyot Linden: I think you are missing intent
- [15:52] Coyot Linden: rather mis-ascribing intent
- [15:52] Gooden Uggla: no, i'm nailing "reaction"
- [15:52] Rex Cronon: i guess ll has an protocol, and they have to follow it
- [15:52] Coyot Linden: let me finish, please
- [15:53] Gooden Uggla: we all understand why yoiu had to do it
- [15:53] Pauline Darkfury: “Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men.” Douglas Bader
- [15:53] xstorm Radek: i like rules
- [15:53] Coyot Linden: Coyot Linden waits
- [15:53] Talia Malaspina: Nice quote. But you cannot dictate innovation. If a quick fix fixes one thing and breaks two others, you've MORE than doubled the problem.
- [15:53] SMILE (sigma.avro): Well, we got the idea I think Coyot, no woories
- [15:53] Vincent Nacon: I hate rules because we had to have lesser mind people among us. :)
- [15:54] Maestro Linden: Well, some issues are bigger than others
- [15:54] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Lol WingCo was a notorious Iconoclast and all around nautght boy.
- [15:54] F L I P (flip.idlemind): The "disaster" in question (the one regarding attachments and scripts) is fixed everywhere now, yes?
- [15:54] Homeless Resident (homeless): not following rules on your job can get you fired
- [15:54] Coyot Linden: Anyway, Gooden, I have asked for greater communication around bug fixes
- [15:54] Pauline Darkfury: Yes, some of it is about how you interpret the scale of things
- [15:54] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Just look how he lost his Legs.
- [15:54] Maestro Linden: in most cases, yes, Flip
- [15:54] Vincent Nacon: I don't see how this (7283) issue is a big deal when there ARE work arounds
- [15:54] Coyot Linden: Indeed, that's what prompted Mercille to act on the timewarp bug
- [15:54] Latif Khalifa: anyone got a link to Kelly html hud demo wiki page?
- [15:55] Maestro Linden: although those 2 issues I mentioned a few minutes ago are not yet fixed except in some Aditi channel
- [15:55] Pauline Darkfury: There are not workarounds for all cases, and moving regions to RC didn't reduce it to 7 days for all cases
- [15:55] Coyot Linden: but just because no-one says "we're on it" on each and every bug, doesn't mean we don't care
- [15:55] Vincent Nacon: actually... hardly a "work around" when it dosen't use that function anyway
- [15:55] Gooden Uggla: coyot a simple acknowledgement on the blog "we're sorry for the broken items, but it was a necessary fix" would have gone a long way
- [15:55] Gooden Uggla: or oon login
- [15:55] Pauline Darkfury: Some products deliberately disable themselves when rezzed in-world
- [15:55] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Vince there are workarounds that are implemental, and there are workarounds that can't be implemented.
- [15:55] Coyot Linden: Gooden, I agree
- [15:55] Pauline Darkfury: Many "average users" are painfully unaware of channels, to know how to find a RC
- [15:55] Talia Malaspina: Latif, if you google "Kelly html hud demo wiki" I think it's the first one. :|
- [15:55] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): vs the Maker has left.
- [15:55] Vincent Nacon: I know and I think it's kinda silly to depends on one thing like remote pin
- [15:55] Coyot Linden: but comms is not something I control
- [15:56] Coyot Linden: just provide input on
- [15:56] Latif Khalifa: Talia, thanks! (and doh :)
- [15:56] Gooden Uggla: you're preaching to the choir, but many of us inworld see the reactions that you guys don't
- [15:56] Talia Malaspina: Sorry, it's ON the first one..heehe
- [15:56] Gooden Uggla: i'llk shaddup now
- [15:56] Lares Carter: Latif, https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/HTML_HUD_Demo
- [15:56] Vincent Nacon: muhahahaha!
- [15:57] xstorm Radek: grumbles
- [15:57] Nal (nalates.urriah): It is hard to predict what the uninformed with think. Informing everyone in SL seems impossible.
- [15:57] Marigold Devin: Marigold Devin passes the botox round to all those who are currently frowning in RL.
- [15:57] SMILE (sigma.avro): if LLs do products, what is left to us...
- [15:57] Maestro Linden: There was a forum post in the thread about the deploy
- [15:57] Gooden Uggla: nalates they have a login announcement that can reach literally everyone
- [15:57] Maestro Linden: and the support team was informed about the issue, of course
- [15:57] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): You can inform a sufficient number to quash rumours.
- [15:58] F L I P (flip.idlemind): Some TPVs replace that with their own log in announcement
- [15:58] Rex Cronon: right now they do demos. there is still hope they leave something for us;)
- [15:58] xstorm Radek: LL can not make content
- [15:58] Vincent Nacon: always good idea to have some kind fail-safe in every script communication
- [15:58] Nal (nalates.urriah): Gooden, that is true. Now how to you assure people will read it?
- [15:58] Gooden Uggla: you don't, but it's the best they have, next to the email spam
- [15:58] Vincent Nacon: Yeah, LL can't... haven't you seen their "Ruth" shape?
- [15:58] Nal (nalates.urriah): agreed
- [15:58] Marigold Devin: I think the Deploy/Server threads ought to get a special billing - like a red outline - when they are added to the forums, as they seem to get buried a lot of the time. Make more of the regular users a bit more aware.
- [15:58] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Yeah MOTD is the least read communications forum after Isvestia and Pravda
- [15:58] xstorm Radek: lol
- [15:59] Pauline Darkfury: Vincent, the LSL environment actively discourages having rigorous checking, fall backs, and fail safes, due to the lack of memory
- [15:59] Vincent Nacon: that's not a good fail-safe, Gooden
- [15:59] Maestro Linden: Falcon's talking to me now
- [15:59] Maestro Linden: reminding me to tell you about another upcoming project
- [15:59] Vincent Nacon: tell him I said hi
- [15:59] Maestro Linden: there's a Havok2011 update
- [15:59] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Hi Falcon *waves*
- [15:59] Vincent Nacon: and I hate your density fix
- [15:59] Vincent Nacon: :P
- [15:59] Nal (nalates.urriah): \o/ new projects
- [15:59] SMILE (sigma.avro): lol
- [15:59] Maestro Linden: 'with unicorns and ponies'
- [15:59] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Oh brother
- [16:00] Motor Loon: ooh
- [16:00] Motor Loon: what kind of ponies?
- [16:00] Talia Malaspina: Rainbows, don't forget rainbows!
- [16:00] Coyot Linden: pumpkin time
- [16:00] Pauline Darkfury: A big part of the 7283 issue was the LSL function having a fail-delete feature, so not only did it fail, but it also destroyed the object in the process of failing
- [16:00] Maestro Linden: it should actually be a lot smaller than the Havok7 update. it's a minor update
- [16:00] Vincent Nacon: what about Havok2010.2?
- [16:00] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Cry Havok and let slip.... Uh which version?
- [16:00] Maestro Linden: we're going straight to 2011.2 on the server
- [16:00] Coyot Linden: ...the dogs of war
- [16:00] xstorm Radek: oh tell Falcon the script that read night and day of a sim is no longer working right on aditi and lots of auto lights will be broken
- [16:00] Vincent Nacon: ok
- [16:01] Vincent Nacon: so what's new in 2011 version?
- [16:01] xstorm Radek: :)
- [16:01] Maestro Linden: ok xstorm, though I don't think that's his department :)
- [16:01] Rex Cronon: btw. where is oskar?
- [16:01] Coyot Linden: Shakesphere is really best in the original Klingon
- [16:01] Vincent Nacon: or anything that would actually help SL with?
- [16:01] Maestro Linden: Falcon says that nothing's new :)
- [16:01] xstorm Radek: well kelly not around lol
- [16:01] Vincent Nacon: figured
- [16:01] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): Kallista Arliss snorts as she pushes her glasses back up her nose
- [16:01] Vincent Nacon: another useless update
- [16:01] xstorm Radek: ;)
- [16:01] Maestro Linden: "improvements in the math library"
- [16:01] Maestro Linden: sounds like a speed/accuracy improvement
- [16:01] SMILE (sigma.avro): oh, that is good
- [16:01] Vincent Nacon: I dunno
- [16:02] Maestro Linden: also it makes future upgrades less risky
- [16:02] Talia Malaspina: And what a lovely nose it is, Kallista.
- [16:02] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): ah Pi is no longer =3 now it's 22/7
- [16:02] xstorm Radek: hhmm true
- [16:02] Vincent Nacon: yeah but Havok tend to update the features stuff than physic
- [16:02] SMILE (sigma.avro): haha
- [16:02] Rex Cronon: now instead of pie the mat lib returns 3?
- [16:02] Kallista Arliss (kallista.destiny): no it used to return 3, now it's 22/7
- [16:02] Vincent Nacon: wait what?
- [16:02] Vincent Nacon: O-o
- [16:02] Gooden Uggla: speaking of kelly, where is he?
- [16:02] SMILE (sigma.avro): some efforts on lmist maybe ?
