Welcome to all widgets that help improve and extend your Second Life experience. Please add according to category any additional external services you know of that connect with Second Life. Popular Places/ Bookmarking Service
- Popular Places http://www.slpopularplaces.com/index.php?rating=pg (OBJECT CENTRIC)
- bad website (this whole thing really just sucks)
- link to voting kiosk doesn't quite work
- empty forum available
- provides teleport
- requires login to post
- Tagging http://www.sloog.org/ (OBJECT CENTRIC)
- Bookmarking service
- provides either "most tagged" or "most recent"
- can click on user and see their tags and locations- no profile info
- provides teleport
- about tagging a location- can custom name a location but no notes
- requires login from SL to post
- Social Bookmarking http://www.gridmarker.com/ (OBJECT CENTRIC)
- uses HUD IW to sign up
- add friends and watch their lists
- plus tagging and RSS
- requires a bit more technical savvy
Popular Articles
- SLIGG (user-voted articles list) http://sligg.com/ (OBJECT CENTRIC)
- like digg for SL content, but not all content is SL related
- lots of spam
- can comment to posts
- would not recommend
Popular Objects IW
- SlateIT http://slateit.org/ (OBJECT CENTRIC)
- need to go IW to get HUD
- no profiles at all, just listings with ratings
Events
- Eventful: http://eventful.com/events?l=Second%20Life
- all of the events in Second Life are automatically added to this website
- allows people to "demand it"
- need to change location to "Second Life"- the UI isn't terribly easy to search from home, but the direct link is better
- allows for creation of profile with connected actions/ entered info by user
Popular Websites
- Top Sites (traffic) http://www.sltopsites.com/ (OBJECT CENTRIC)
- user name, but no profile
- tags, rating, categories, reviews
Communities
- PUBLIC http://www.slprofiles.com/ (EGO CENTRIC)
- Rating system on places
- member profiles- separate from SL
- SL favorites can be stored via web
- groups, events - separate from SL system, but most connect via SLRUL
- question and answer voting - plus comments
- actual profile creation
- PRIVATE http://www.efaiconica.com (EGO AND OBJECT CENTRIC)
- by invite only, then free
- includes news, events, classifieds, etc
- rating and comments directly to profile
- friends, groups, blog posts
- rating directly on photos
- offers status: offline (has presence?- not sure if SL or this website)
- can plugin "slstats" (see image to right)
- SL actually has a dedicated URL at meetup: http://secondlife.meetup.com/
- typically based on location
- seems like a great way for virtual friends to meet in RL
- doesn't seem like they are using this to drive IW meetings
Content Sharing
- Blogging (HUD) http://bloghud.com/ (OBJECT CENTRIC)
- fancier version of sloog
- no profile information, just can see their favs or their recent
- can cross post text or images to bloghud and/or your own blog/ flickr
- Can add notes to post
- provides teleport
- w/ RSS
- requires login from SL to post
- views, comments (no rating)
- requires password creation from IW- so some type of authentication
- Snapzilla (Postcards) http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/ (OBJECT CENTRIC)
- no profile information, just can see their favs or their recent
- can post directly to snapzilla or to flickr
- requires login to SL
- provides teleport
- can add notes to post
- rating, views and comments to snapshot
- SLbuzz (Postcards) http://snapshots.slbuzz.com/search (OBJECT and EGO CENTRIC)
- profile information
- recent content (including blog), contacts
- comments to profile directly
- can add notes to post
- no views, can comment to snapshot directly
- Second Life Twitter client http://ordinalmalaprop.com/twitter/
- uses an IW HUD or something similar to allow residents to twitter directly from SL
- looks like it requires a little technical savvy
Stats
- Stats http://slstats.com/
- pretty basic stuff
- evidently can plug into other websites (see private SN example)
Search Aids
- Product Search Engine http://www.second411.com/
- owners can list their items
- residents can use the HUD or website to search listed items
- not really a SN
- provides teleport on click
- SL Toolbar http://www.sl-toolbar.eu/sl/english/english.html
- installs directly to IW or Firefox
- provides quick links to SL related websites and allows you to search those specifically
- also provides stats
- provides suggestions for TP
- provides teleport on click
Group Management/ Advertising
- Advertising, update groups alternative http://www.subscribeomatic.com/
- Your subscribers are safely stored in a database outside SL, so you can have virtually unlimited number of subscribers, and your customer database is safe from SL disasters like script resets, object deletion, etc
- Message and item history
- RSS feed
- IW driven
SL w/out the 3D part
- SLeek http://delta.slinked.net/second-life/sleek/
- software to download
- allows you to perform basic in-world tasks such as chatting, IM, viewing Inventory, viewing Profiles, and more
- PC only
- will compete with SLIM
- Movable Life http://www.movablelife.net/login.aspx
- access SL via web browser
- allows you to chat, IM, search, teleport, manage friends, groups, etc
- attempted to chat, but no one responded- not sure if it works
- tried to teleport, but not sure if that worked either
- in concept this is (per my gut feeling) what we need to go for but more flexible
DIY Bits
- google gadgets: http://www.google.com/ig/directory?synd=open&q=second+life&btnG=Search+Google+Gadgets
- friends online, stats, search or news feed
- at least one of the friends widget you also have to be logged into the sl website
- good for people who have a website where they want to pull in data
- not general public friendly
MAC Dashboard
- map: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/games/secondlifemapwidget.html
- allows your to browse the map by entering sim name or coordinates
- status: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/games/secondlifestatus.html
- friends, SL stats, property stats (including those who visit)
- also provides links out to useful places (L$)
- could not get friends list to appear- not sure how to enter that
- evidently can chat to friends from widget once they appear?
- currency: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/calculate_convert/currencyconverter_palplesoftware.html
- seems like a basic currency converter- nothing too social about this one
