Transcript of Oskar Linden's Beta Server Office Hour for March 17th, 2011:
- [15:00] Oskar Linden: light crowd today
- [15:00] Bronson Blackadder: he funny how we both got it wrong
- [15:00] Bronson Blackadder: heh even
- [15:00] Flip Idlemind: Was that just an excuse to say "light"?
- [15:01] Flip Idlemind: Well, could be DST related
- [15:01] Eddi Decosta: well, whit the light i can use phoenix here and the viewer 2 in agni
- [15:02] Oskar Linden: alrighty then
- [15:02] Oskar Linden: let's get this party started
- [15:02] Eddi Decosta: ask one coffee to oskar
- [15:02] Liisa Runo: took a while to realise i was not in chat range of everyone, some evil lindens refuse to get sensed :P
- [15:03] Draconis Neurocam: did oskar crash
- [15:03] Fancy Greeter: Oskar Linden has arrived! (Or, returned?)
- [15:03] Eddi Decosta: sorry
- [15:04] Draconis Neurocam: wb oskar
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: ossm
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: and that is what happens when I attempt to run a project vwr for a live meeting
- [15:04] Eddi Decosta: wb oskar!! ;)
- [15:04] Flip Idlemind: And now the "Or, returned?" part of my greeter makes sense
- [15:04] Entering god: mode, level 200
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: I will now need a copy of the transcript after the meeting please :-)
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: anyways
- [15:05] Draconis Neurocam: you didnt miss anything
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: agenda link time
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Server_Beta_User_Group
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: this was one of "those" weeks
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: if you hadn't noticed we seemed to go a little release happy today
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: oh, Happy Saint Patricks Day BTW
- [15:05] Coyot Linden: ::cough::
- [15:06] Eddi Decosta: thanks for this place oskar ;)
- [15:06] Oskar Linden: as of this morning at 1am all channels and regions are running 11.03.16.224235
- [15:06] Oskar Linden: we started the week off as usual
- [15:06] Oskar Linden: and promoted LeTigre to main channel
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: and rolled it on Tuesday
- [15:07] Draconis Neurocam: im guessing we cant know the content issue that was fixed
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: then we rolled all the RC channels with updated code Wednesday morning
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: then yesterday afternoon the prims hit the fan
- [15:07] Coyot Linden: LOL
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: we had some frantic emergency meetings
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: and decided that we needed to do an emergency deploy
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: we've not done a full grid deploy like that in a while
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: we have gotten used to spreading the load over a few days
- [15:08] Draconis Neurocam: emergency meetings are usually more fun than the planned ones
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: straight from the go it takes close to 8 hours
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: no. here it works the other way
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: our regular meetings are ossm
- [15:09] Rex Cronon: hello everybody
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: emergency ones are ulcer inducing
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: hi rex
- [15:09] Rex Cronon: hi oskar
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: we also have the unfortunate situation for most sec level exploits that we can't talk about them until they are fixed
- [15:09] Flip Idlemind: You guize haven't done an emergency roll since the server versions were numbered 1.xx (Or have you..?)
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: people will go overboard exploiting them until the last server rolls
- [15:10] Rex Cronon: can u at least give a clue what we should watch out for?
- [15:10] Oskar Linden: it was a new exploit that allowed morally questionable people to duplicate no copy items
- [15:10] Draconis Neurocam: it must be hard to have a meeting if you cant talk about the exploit (terrible joke i know)
- [15:10] Oskar Linden: in a nutshell that's it
- [15:10] Oskar Linden: and it was being exploited in ever increasing numbers
- [15:10] Monty Linden: we use mime
- [15:11] Rex Cronon: :(
- [15:11] Oskar Linden: it's never an easy call to do an emergency deploy like this and not one that we take lightly
- [15:11] Oskar Linden: we know how disruptive it is
- [15:11] Coyot LindenCoyot: Linden wondered why our meetings were mime encoded
- [15:11] Oskar Linden: we have to weigh that against the risk of leaving the exploit out there
- [15:11] Draconis Neurocam: the white face paint shops must have been confused by the sales increase
- [15:12] Oskar Linden: sadly this has put us behind a week in terms of deployment velocity
- [15:12] Coyot Linden: lol
- [15:12] Draconis Neurocam: seriously though, good job, and i know it must suck
- [15:12] Rex Cronon: btw there is something weird going on with MeshHQ. i tp there. i hear beeps. things start to slow down and had to relog. looked like graphics spamming
- [15:12] Oskar Linden: things should be stable til next Tuesday when we start the release/rolling restart dance again
- [15:12] Oskar Linden: no idea rex
- [15:12] Flip Idlemind: So are all sims running the exact same version, or is it like a patched BlueSteel, and patched LeTigre, etc.
- [15:13] Coyot Linden: the former
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: yes Flip
- [15:13] Coyot Linden: all is the same
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: all RC's are running the same code as main channel
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: 11.03.16.224235
- [15:13] Rex Cronon: that is the deploy done last night?
- [15:13] Coyot Linden: yes
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: coyot deserves some love for holding Agni's hand until 1am this morning
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: I was holding Coyot's hand
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: and Maestro was holding my hand
- [15:14] Coyot Linden: we'll go back to having separate RCs next week
- [15:14] Coyot Linden: thanks, Oskar
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: we formed a release/qa chain
- [15:14] Rex Cronon: u had a group prayer?
- [15:14] Coyot Linden: kumbaya...
- [15:14] Draconis Neurocam: beat me too it
- [15:14] Coyot Linden: :)
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: so that makes this part of the meeting a little light
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: I was going to talk about all the new code
- [15:14] Coffee Maker: Request accepted, Please wait..
- [15:14] Rex Cronon: but now things r ok. right?
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: including the content managment branch crash fix
- [15:15] Maestro Linden: yes, they've calmed down
- [15:15] Coffee Maker: Thanks you, Have a nice day Eddi
- [15:15] Maestro Linden: at least I hope so :)
- [15:15] Coyot Linden: that's not a little light, that's a really big light (bulb)
- [15:15] Coffee Maker: Request accepted, Please wait..
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: I love this wand for meetings
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: seems fitting for this crowd
- [15:15] Flip Idlemind: Ah yes, the elusive BlueSteel crasher? You guize finally track it down?
- [15:15] Coffee Maker: Thanks you, Have a nice day Eddi
- [15:15] Rex Cronon: cool. so what happens with all the clones?
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: we did Flip
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: it took a lot of work
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: it's one of those things that goes like this
- [15:16] Coyot Linden: We're turning the clones into stormtroopers
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: 2 weeks of testing time
- [15:16] Rex Cronon: haha:)
- [15:16] Fancy Greeter: PLDude2 Tester has arrived! (Or, returned?)
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: 1 week of getting the dev env set up to test it
- [15:16] Eddi Decosta: outch
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: multiple days to track the code down
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: a few hours to analyze it
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: and 5 minutes to fix it
- [15:17] Oskar Linden: we'll see the RC's again next week
- [15:17] Fancy Greeter: PLDude3 Tester has arrived! (Or, returned?)
- [15:17] Flip Idlemind: So what was it? (Or can you not tell us because it had to be rolled back)
- [15:17] Oskar Linden: I did
- [15:18] Oskar Linden: we didn't roll back. we rolled forward to a fixed version
- [15:18] Fancy Greeter: PLDude4 Tester has arrived! (Or, returned?)
- [15:18] Flip Idlemind: Fixed version of what was crashing BlueSteel?
- [15:18] Maestro Linden: no, a fixed version of what used to be "Second Life Server"
- [15:19] Oskar Linden: oh sorry
- [15:19] Oskar Linden: we took the RC code off the grid
- [15:19] Oskar Linden: it's all one version now
- [15:19] Oskar Linden: til next week
- [15:19] Oskar Linden: we could roll a new RC today... but the sims need some time to breathe
- [15:19] Draconis Neurocam: gadget
- [15:19] Oskar Linden: no one wants 3 rolling restarts in 36 hours
- [15:20] Flip Idlemind: I do!
- [15:20] Oskar Linden: ok flip
- [15:20] Coyot LindenCoyot: Linden certainly doesn't
- [15:20] Flip Idlemind: But I may be in a minority
- [15:20] Oskar Linden: I will make you the new resi contact point
- [15:20] Oskar Linden: all residents with complaints about release velocity talk to FLIP X-D
- [15:20] Fancy Greeter: PLDude5 Tester has arrived! (Or, returned?)
- [15:20] Draconis Neurocam: he runs a business apparently, so any advertising is good advertising right?
- [15:20] Oskar Linden: heh
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: I do haev good news on the XMPP front
- [15:21] Coyot Linden: tell it to Charlie Sheen
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: we have a project vwr now!!!
- [15:21] Draconis Neurocam: woo
- [15:21] Coyot Linden: \o/
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Alternate_Viewers#XMPP_Group_Chat
- [15:21] Rex Cronon: u guys dring tiger blood:)
- [15:21] Rex Cronon: drink*
- [15:21] Coyot Linden: mmm
- [15:21] Draconis Neurocam: thats how they got the rollout done so fast
- [15:21] Draconis Neurocam: tigerblooded devs
- [15:22] Oskar Linden: yeah adonis dna
- [15:22] Draconis Neurocam: they are winners
- [15:22] ac14 Hutson: going to be hard to beta test that here. some groups have more members then the higest recorded concurrency on here :/
- [15:22] Oskar Linden: this roll went pretty fast and smooth last night
- [15:22] Oskar Linden: any comments on that coyot?
- [15:22] Coyot Linden: nope
- [15:22] Oskar Linden: alright then
- [15:23] Coyot Linden: no real bumpts
- [15:23] Coyot Linden: bumps, even
- [15:23] Oskar Linden: so yeah get on the XMPP project vwr
- [15:23] Oskar Linden: hmm do we have a place to file jira's for project vwr issues?
- [15:23] Oskar Linden: it totally crashed on me
- [15:23] Oskar Linden: I'll mess with it some more later
- [15:23] Maestro Linden: we should add an 'affects versoin' field for the project viewer if we don't have one yet
- [15:24] Draconis Neurocam: i totally think that deserves a tech blog post, that would most likely be the best way to get enough people on line on the beta grid to really put it through some stress
- [15:24] Flip Idlemind: All you have to do is go on Agni and start a chat with the Beta group saying "Come to Aditi if you want group chat fixed!" Boom, instant giant crowd
- [15:25] Draconis Neurocam: srsly
- [15:25] Rex Cronon: no
- [15:25] Oskar Linden: yeah, I'm planning some comms
- [15:25] Rex Cronon: u need to go to merchants group and say: if u don;t want your things "cloned" come to beta to help fight it:)
- [15:26] Oskar Linden: heh
- [15:26] Oskar Linden: I'ce tried
- [15:26] Oskar Linden: I've
- [15:26] Oskar Linden: most merchants believe it is not their responsibility
- [15:26] Coyot Linden: I'ce I'ce baby
- [15:26] Oskar Linden: I can kinda understand
- [15:26] Oskar Linden: as long as they tell me when things break on AGNI
- [15:27] Oskar Linden: in an RC
- [15:27] Draconis Neurocam: i can see them just having the opinion that coming to the beta grid would serve no purpose if all they do is sell things, it wouldnt change anything if they all logged in and had no idea what to do to help stop it
- [15:28] Rex Cronon: ok. instrunctions would help
- [15:28] Draconis Neurocam: probably
- [15:28] Oskar Linden: it's a complicated issue
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: also ADITI isn't what it was
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: and we don't have server versions stewing out here for 3 months
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: we're pushing 4 versions of server to agni weekly now
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: I can't expect anyone to test their stuff on all 4
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: every week
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: it just isn't feasible
- [15:30] Coyot LindenCoyot: Linden nods
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: so the RC process Kelly devised is our best chance at release quality code with some semblence of velocity
- [15:30] Rex Cronon: can't u put flags in code and see if anything triggers it?
- [15:31] Draconis Neurocam: i severly doubt its that simple rez
- [15:31] Draconis Neurocam: rex
- [15:31] Rex Cronon: like protect money exchanges, prims
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: you can
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: and we do have things like that in the code
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: for certain things
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: but the more you put in the more thigns can lag
- [15:32] Oskar Linden: then you also have a problem if you flag or log too much
- [15:32] Oskar Linden: the signal to noise ratio problem
- [15:32] Kelly Linden: we log WAY too much right now.
- [15:32] Rex Cronon: ok. what if u make these flags temp. like only for first 24 hours?
- [15:32] Kelly Linden: it is very difficult to find signal in the noise
- [15:32] Oskar Linden: temp on rez flags? :-D
- [15:33] Coyot Linden: Rex,
- [15:33] Rex Cronon: :)
- [15:33] Rex Cronon: usually problems rise i the first 24 hours
- [15:33] Coyot Linden: I don't think you want an automatic expiration for these things
- [15:33] Rex Cronon: in the*
- [15:33] Coyot Linden: You want to make sure it works and then remove it
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: it depends. sometimes new issues idle in the wings for weeks
- [15:33] Coyot Linden: automation may do the wrong thing
- [15:34] Maestro Linden: yeah, but if there are reported issues, we can always temporarily enable DEBUG-level logging on a single sim
- [15:34] Oskar Linden: sometimes I'm like "wait you mean no one noticed this before?"
- [15:34] Coyot Linden: if someone forgets to turn it off
- [15:34] Maestro Linden: (which is REALLY verbose and slow)
- [15:34] Rex Cronon: is not easy, nor simple, but u need it
- [15:35] Draconis Neurocam: kelly, i know i mentioned it before, but the issue of public urls never being given to the estate script time debugger, you said it needed to be rewritten, any news
- [15:35] Kelly Linden: I did not successfully parse that
- [15:36] Oskar Linden: Draconis you broke kelly
- [15:36] Draconis Neurocam: the public urls column, in the script time floater, always reports 0, and gives a warning or error in the debug console
- [15:36] Draconis Neurocam: and i have no idea if its a client or server issue
- [15:36] Kelly Linden: purely viewer side bug
- [15:36] Draconis Neurocam: ah
- [15:37] Kelly Linden: pretty sure. ~90% confidence
- [15:37] Draconis Neurocam: its kinda hard to test because the right code in the viewer has never been there apparently
- [15:37] Kelly Linden: I think if you look at the caps the viewer uses and fetch those
- [15:37] Draconis Neurocam: if that is the case
- [15:37] Kelly Linden: you get all the data
- [15:38] Kelly Linden: fetch with curl for example
- [15:38] Draconis Neurocam: ill look into it
- [15:39] Draconis Neurocam: sorry if i derailed the meeting
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: no worries drac
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: I don't have much of an agenda because of the emergency deploy
- [15:40] Flip Idlemind: "Falcon's RayCasting Challenge"?
- [15:40] Coyot LindenCoyot: Linden has always wondered about Oskar's agenda. :P
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: The Oskar Agenda
- [15:41] Draconis Neurocam: hes been better about it than others, ill give that to oskar
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: it is full of love and rainbows
- [15:41] Monty Linden: "Fix the truck"
- [15:41] Rex Cronon: btw. i remember hearing recently that there were some bugs with applying mask/filters to lllisten
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: so falcon's raycasting challenge
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: falcon wants me to communicate a new challenge
- [15:41] Maestro Linden: Rex: Yep, there was a bad bug with one of the deploys.. 2 weeks ago?
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: the raycasting code is in the mesh server branch
- [15:41] Maestro Linden: llListen() wasn't respecting uuid filters
- [15:42] Kelly Linden: it was on RC for less than a day rex.
- [15:42] Maestro Linden: it's been fixed
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: anyone have the raycasting wiki link handy?
- [15:42] Rex Cronon: was fixed? ok cool
- [15:42] Flip Idlemind: This one? [1]
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: there we go
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: falcon wants people to break llCastRay as hard as possible
- [15:42] Draconis Neurocam: moy should be interested in that
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: he wants to flex it as much as can be flexed
- [15:43] Oskar Linden: moy's messed with it
- [15:43] Oskar Linden: I'll write up an email and a wiki page with his thoughts
- [15:43] Oskar Linden: but he really wants to see it stress tested
- [15:44] Draconis Neurocam: ill have to spend some time i guess, ive not messed with it much myself, fear of getting envy on agni
- [15:44] Oskar Linden: I'm not really sure what the scope of possibilities are with that function
- [15:44] Oskar Linden: well now is your chance
- [15:44] Oskar Linden: it'll make it to agni soon enough
- [15:44] Rex Cronon: implement our own physics engine using lsl:)
- [15:45] Flip Idlemind: Ok, just be aware that whenever someone challenges me to break something...I usually end up breaking something
- [15:46] Rex Cronon: usually when somebody issues such a challange they r pretty sure of the end results:)
- [15:46] Draconis Neurocam: i wonder if you tried to detected holes through extremely tortured prims, hmmm
- [15:46] Oskar Linden: falcon is never cocky
- [15:46] Draconis Neurocam: detect*
- [15:46] Oskar Linden: but if you want to prove him wrong
- [15:46] Oskar Linden: now is your chance
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: "Falcon says llCastRay is unbreakable" --Oskar
- [15:47] Flip Idlemind: I think the servers running the mesh sims will be on fire by the end of the day o.O
- [15:47] Kelly LindenKelly: Linden can break it. Give me 1 release cycle.
- [15:47] Kelly Linden: ;)
- [15:47] Draconis Neurocam: quotes help angering the right people
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: that's not fair kelly
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: you'll go into the code and add bugs, then release it
- [15:48] Oskar Linden: then win
- [15:48] Rex Cronon: .
- [15:49] Rex Cronon: i have connection problems:(
- [15:49] Oskar Linden: maestro, monty, kelly: you guys have anything coming up you want to chat about?
- [15:49] Rex Cronon: did i miss anything after: [15:47
- [15:49] Monty Linden: no, slowish week
- [15:49] Monty Linden: trying to QA some stuff so I can hit Aditi
- [15:50] Maestro Linden: we'll have a fix for SVC-6544 soon
- [15:50] JIRA-helper: http//jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-6544:
- [#SVC-6544] In "About: Land" dialog, "Most Recent" objects show a date of 1970/01/01 00:00 UTC
- [15:50] Kelly Linden: I may be able to mono 2 onto aditi in the next few days. double checking versions now.
- [15:50] Draconis Neurocam: that would be nice
- [15:50] Kelly Linden: mesh finally updated (woot)
- [15:50] Oskar Linden: nice
- [15:51] Draconis Neurocam: also whats up with translation getting an entirely new usergroup, while kelly still has to deal with not even being in the table
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: huh?
- [15:52] Sigma Avro: I thought 6544 was due to refresh time for newly created objects
- [15:53] Draconis Neurocam: [2]
- [15:53] Draconis Neurocam: theres a translation group there now
- [15:53] Draconis Neurocam: but kelly's still isnt
- [15:53] Maestro Linden: no, it was just that we didn't set the time when threaded rez is enabled. it looks like the code skipped that part
- [15:53] Sigma Avro: oh !
- [15:53] Oskar Linden: kelly is just spending the extra time getting code done
- [15:53] Oskar Linden: I have nothing better to do than just talk about QA :-D
- [15:54] Oskar Linden: ok 6 muntes left
- [15:54] Master Starship: Oh oskar throwing an idea out there would having 4 sims that could be for branches that would replace the current RC be helpfull. it may need more explination
- [15:54] Oskar Linden: ?
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: oh on aditi
- [15:55] Coyot Linden: not sure I followed that either
- [15:55] Coyot Linden: is this a pipelining strategy?
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: master?
- [15:55] Monty LindenMonty: Linden has beer and wings waiting for him....
- [15:55] Master Starship: yes
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: doing things like that on ADITI is not as easy as it sounds
- [15:55] Master Starship: sims that are expected ot be restarted often
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: the stuff hits ADITI but it comes and goes so fast
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: it's hard to organize anything publicly before it's on AGNI
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: hired
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: Hi Red
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: oops
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: heh
- [15:56] Coyot Linden: I think we also lose some deploy flexibility there
- [15:56] Sigma Avro: lol
- [15:57] RedMokum Bravin: Hello
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: some projects are on ADITI for a few weeks
- [15:57] Rex Cronon: hi
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: others have a day or two only
- [15:57] Maestro Linden: we may try to have something like mono2-performance on aditi for a while, for people to test. but for other stuff, it's not uncommon for a version to be out on aditi for less than a day...
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: exactly
- [15:57] Master Starship: ah let me write it out in detail not tonight
- [15:57] Draconis Neurocam: mono2-performance with raycasting would be sweet
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: the big stuff that needs some lead in / smoke time we get on here for a while
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: like mesh
- [15:58] Oskar Linden: it won't have raycasting
- [15:58] Oskar Linden: that's in mesh
- [15:58] Kelly Linden: mono2-performance won't have mesh
- [15:58] Draconis Neurocam: blah
- [15:58] Oskar Linden: it will after mesh
- [15:58] Sigma Avro: by the way castray is anounced a new function in lsl wiki, but works only on Aditi
- [15:58] ac14 Hutson: hmm
- [15:58] Coyot Linden: master, please cc me on that: coyot@lindenlab.com
- [15:58] Oskar Linden: right
- [15:58] Flip Idlemind: So if raycasting is in mesh, and you said raycasting will hit agni "soon enough", how excited should that statement make us?
- [15:58] Oskar Linden: it's in beta
- [15:59] Oskar Linden: you can be somewhat excited
- [15:59] Draconis Neurocam: sigma, i would be happy that its documented at all, they do document early sometimes
