Advertising Outside of Second Life

Advertising your skill game offerings outside of the Second Life platform is permitted with strict adherence to appropriate disclaimers and with an understanding of the legal constraints involved.

Key Requirements:

  1. Disclaimers Are Mandatory:
    • Any external advertisement must clearly state that:
      1. The skill games are only accessible within Second Life's Skill Gaming Regions.
      2. Access is restricted to residents of jurisdictions where such games are legally permitted.
      3. The service is not available to residents of certain U.S. states (a list should be provided in the disclaimer).
  2. No Representations About Global Availability:
    • While Second Life is a global platform, we have not conducted a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction legal analysis for non-U.S. markets. Operators must not imply or suggest that skill gaming is available globally or make representations about availability outside of legally reviewed jurisdictions.
  3. No Targeted Ads to Restricted Regions:
    • Operators must avoid directly targeting individuals or audiences located in U.S. states or countries where skill gaming access is restricted or where legal analysis has not been completed.
  4. No Misrepresentation of Platform Access:
    • Ads must make it clear that participation in these games requires a Second Life account and access to the Skill Gaming Region within the platform. It should be evident that this is not a standalone or mobile gaming service.

Sample Disclaimer: “Second Life Skill Gaming is only accessible within designated Skill Gaming Regions inside the Second Life platform. Access is restricted to individuals located in jurisdictions where skill gaming is legally permitted. Participation is not available to residents of Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee and Utah. Void where prohibited.”

Linden Lab will continue to monitor legal developments and will update this guidance as needed. For now, these guidelines should be strictly followed in any marketing efforts outside of Second Life.
