Heyas Which!
I noticed your fight with the cite extension. In order to make it work, you need both, the <ref>something</ref> part, as well as a <references /> tag to mark the spot where the references are supposed to be displayed. The manual is explaining it in more detail with all the fancy extras, but but <ref>, </ref>, and <references /> should be enough for the basics.
