A BIG thanks to Zand Gundersen for sending me his copy after Torley noticed his chat logger wasn't on!
Torley Linden: Friendly greetings! :D
Zand Gundersen: Good Day Torley!
Torley Linden: It's all rezzing in for me now... woot.
Taryn London: Hi Torley!
Kooky Jetaime: Hahaha chance
Jaymes Kjeller: Hey Torley!
Torley Linden: Good day Zand! Hi! Wow... avatars afoot.
Tiger Nosferatu: Hello there Torley!
Torley Linden: Hey Taryn, Jaymes!
Senna Demina: Hi Torley
MichelAngel Guyot: hi torley
Kooky Jetaime: Taryn - yes... but I still am curious to know what the LL responce is going to be
Harmony Colman: allo to everyone who has not rezzed
Lisa Lowe: Hi Torley :)
Kooky Jetaime: or if they'll claim to ignore it.
Dizzy Banjo: w00t the Torlmeister has arrived !
Torley Linden: Oh my gosh!
Torley Linden: This is so nice!
Kooky Jetaime: which would be a mistake.
Torley Linden: Hi hi all!
Torley Linden: What's up and what did I miss so far?
Kooky Jetaime: (Thats not a statement that they should comply either)
BiGSiN Wormser is Offline
Harmony Colman: yay the vid man himself
Mark Athens: Hi Torley
Harmony Colman: im a huge fan
Wrinkle Finkel: that's your opinion kooky..
Mark Athens: :)
Kooky Jetaime: Torley - talking about the Video/Grief
Wrinkle Finkel: I think they should track them down
Dizzy Banjo settles in with a lemon drink...
Spider Mycron is Online
Torley Linden: I'm not familiar with this yet...
Kooky Jetaime: Wrinkle - that is a valid action as well....
Kooky Jetaime: http://youtube.com/?v=RsV2wbgzRDk
Kooky Jetaime: check it out Torley
Kooky Jetaime: you love youtube.
Lisa Lowe: yeah...nice video's...keep up the good work, Torley :)
Chance Abattoir: Maniko, what is that square thing opposite of Longcat?
Torley Linden: Well, most of the time.
Wrinkle Finkel: you seem to be almost promoting their cause kooky
Torley Linden: Thanks Lisa!
Kooky Jetaime: Wrinkle - no
Kooky Jetaime: I'm not
Dizzy Banjo has got flu.. so made a lemon / honey / ginger drink so strong that he winces incontrollably whilst drinking it
Kooky Jetaime: I think it was the wrong way to do it
Wrinkle Finkel: and say it should not be ignored
Wrinkle Finkel: yes, well, you agree with the sentiment
Wrinkle Finkel: that's what it means when you say "wrong way to do it"
Kooky Jetaime: Do I agree with some of their statement, then yes. By ignore I mean LL takes the stance of "we're just going to ignore it".
Kooky Jetaime: I can agree with part of a statement without supporting the entire statement or its delivery.
Wrinkle Finkel: It's extortion.
Torley Linden: I reckon our GTeam already knows about this. We have seen a lot of videos like this (if you search YouTube there are others) that didn't pan through. I'm not an expert/specialist in that area, but I do know part of the challenge is following up on what's legit when there are so many threats/hoaxes.
Wrinkle Finkel: and vandalism.
Wrinkle Finkel: and harassment
Kooky Jetaime: Agreed Wrinkle
Kooky Jetaime: Which is why I don't support their method of doing it.
Wrinkle Finkel: and effect not just LL, but customers
Wrinkle Finkel: So, what do you mean..that LL has no right to enforce trademarks?
Lisa Lowe: How long does it take you to make a tutorial video usually?
Wrinkle Finkel: is that the part you agree with?
Kooky Jetaime: Wrinkle - thats a complex situation.
Torley Linden: Lisa, depends on what the subject matter is. But as a rough approximation, sometimes I can do a dozen in a day if I'm not interrupted by meetings and other stuff.
Torley Linden: A lot of my time is also spent talking to Residents and getting feedback/learning what to do next, sifting through ideas (there are many) and moving quickly.

Torley Linden: Oh sorry about the previous no-scripts here, I was testing land permissions. For LAND tutorials. =)
Lisa Lowe: Yeah...I can imagine
Torley Linden: I like to simplify, but there are a lot of edge cases and oddities in Second Life that are important to mention!
Taryn London: Sorry for my shoes, they are chatty.
Kooky Jetaime: Wrinkle - without getting into it, US Trademark law requires you to constantly defend your trademarks. Failure to defend means you lose the right to defend. They have not been actively defended in 4 years, otherwise entities like SLExchange wouldn't exist, nor would every other current blatent violation on and off the grid.
Torley Linden: No problem, shoes can talk in Second Life, I often smile at this. ;)
Taryn London grins
Kooky Jetaime: The fact that they have now decided to get off their legal butts, in my opinion (IANAL), is a sad commentary and imho, no longer enforacble
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Plenty of precedent there, if feet can smell is not too big a leap that shoes can talk ...
Kooky Jetaime: but as said, IANAL. Thats for the courts to decide.
Torley Linden: Re: trademark controversies and such, there'll be more responses/followup from LL on that. Again, not an area I'm focused on, but open communication is important.
Torley Linden: (Sounds like conversation was active before I arrived!)
Kooky Jetaime: Its OK Tory.
Dizzy Banjo heard something about a massive group people are being encouraged to join.. to represent the entire community.. however, thought the group system would bork before it could handle that many residents in one group anyway .. lol
Kooky Jetaime: Torey. I just love people who think the world is black and white.
Torley Linden: Hmmm... this region appears to have been rolled back (!), some textures I left out are gone and my copyright-violating watermelon Linden Lab logo is still up (!), I'd better remove that right away. XD
Kooky Jetaime: and yes, I'm one of those people, but I also understand that grey does exist, although I don' tlike to admit it.
Dizzy Banjo: lol
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Nice sharp dividing lines are so convenient for fence-sitters!
Torley Linden: Don't look under where we're sitting! ;)
Torley Linden: OK whew.
Torley Linden also changes the one on the wall. @_@
Dizzy Banjo: lol
Torley Linden: I was recently advised to put ® when I use Second Life for the first time in stuff like video tutorials soooo if you see that, it's legal compliance, that's why.
Harmony Colman: meh i prefer skittles i like rainbows to black and white
Torley Linden: Sometimes this place is just too hyperreal/surreal.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Gee, I must be getting used to it.
Torley Linden: Oh, and back up there I meant "trademark" not "copyright", there's a difference. Sorry.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Looks normal to me.
Torley Linden: I watched many of those "taste the rainbow" commercials, Harmony. I like brilliant ads.
Multi Chair Crate v1.0.42 (TORLEY MOD) whispers: Maximum number of chairs reached, please rez another Multi Chair table.
Dizzy Banjo: hey Torley i wanted to ask you.. when learning to present you video tutorials.. were there any particular books or peoples presentation styles you looked at ( /me is going to do some videotours of the grid showing interesting audio / music installations )
Torley Linden: I browse the Internet looking for a lot of design inspiration.
Wrinkle Finkel: Dizzy, the video claims that LL is " slowly destroying the platform known as Second Life. " Do you agree with that?
Torley Linden: Dizzy, great question, and yes, I have some very strong feelings on that.
Torley Linden: I really REALLY like Carl Sagan.
Dizzy Banjo: Winkle.. no !
Torley Linden: Also, the work of Russell Brown... the PHOTOSHOP GURU... is most welcome.
Torley Linden: He's a video tutorial hero to me.
Torley Linden: I also really like Steve Jobs' presentation style.
Dizzy Banjo: cool
Torley Linden: And for After Effects vidtuts, Andrew Kramer can't be beat.
fr43k Paine: What about the rumor SL is getting closed for the public?
Torley Linden: George Takei is awesome.
Torley Linden: fr43k: Who's your source for that rumor?
CeeJay Tigerpaw: " LL is " slowly destroying the platform known as ..."" is perhaps a defensible position in view of the database problems ...
Wrinkle Finkel: Yes, kooky, do you know anything about that? Do you agree with that claim of the griefers..
Torley Linden: http://www.russellbrown.com and http://www.videocopilot.net (good video tutorials)
fr43k Paine: It was mentioned in the Video posted before..sorry I am slow reader :-)
Dizzy Banjo: ah great thanks torley
fr43k Paine: Its one of the reasons for them to attack LL
Chance Abattoir: George Takei does video tutorials?
Wrinkle Finkel: "Furthermore, you will abort your plans to close Second Life to the public. We know of these plans to make SL exclusive to real world businesses and we are revealing them publicly here today"
Torley Linden: fr43k: Oh, see, problem with stuff like that is it spreads fear and doubt and uncertainty and all that bad stuff.
Torley Linden: Some folks buy into that and take it seriously, and it wastes everyone's time.
Dizzy Banjo: im not sure why LL would close a platform to the public which is entirely based on user generated content and community .. lol..
Torley Linden: No, we're not closing SL to the public.
fr43k Paine: Yea...I would lie if I would say it would concern me
Torley Linden: I have to question whether that was even meant seriously to confuse people or as a parody, too bad it's not April Fool's!
fr43k Paine: I love SL too much to lose it ...guess its not only me
CeeJay Tigerpaw: But current problems restrict access and use, notwithstanding intent.
Harmony Colman: lol that would make no sense to close it to the public most of the profit is due to residents not buisness winkel
Kooky Jetaime: Winkle - Do I feel that LL is asleep at the wheel?? Sometimes.
Wrinkle Finkel: Is that part of what you agree with? That is one of the griefer's claims..you agree with their sentiment..but not their method..don't know what part you agree with..
Multi Chair Crate v1.0.42 (TORLEY MOD) whispers: Maximum number of chairs reached, please rez another Multi Chair table.
Wrinkle Finkel: yes, kooky, they sometimes are. ;-D
Torley Linden: It's kind of absurd though... but sad... I mean, innocent people send us emails asking if we're going to ban furry avatars and all that. They're well-meaning, but those rumors are so ludicrous and false that it is such a waste of people's time & energy — considering all the actual problems that do need to be fixed.
Kooky Jetaime: Actively destorying it would say there was intent. I don't think there is intent, just some.. Misguided directions.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Suggest that someone should be fired for introducing new viewer and new client at same time, when database is stretched to its limits.
Kooky Jetaime: I think Brad needs to be Spanked personally for his answers last week at the 1.19 meeting.
Zand Gundersen heres furry ban!
Torley Linden: But I will agree that's one of the complications with Second Life, that there's so many interwoven pieces. That generalizations will and cannot be accurate due to so many moving parts.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Changing everything at once is classic recipe for disaster.
Harmony Colman: there are doomsday sayers in every world dont belive the chicken littles until you hear it for sure
CeeJay Tigerpaw: *sigh* -- stops mouthing off -- just frustrated ...
Torley Linden: When the world was smaller, I knew a lot more about what was going on, but eventually found that detracted from my ability to focus on my job responsibilities... so over time I've adapted to have greater concentration and help where I can.
Kooky Jetaime: CeeJay - Viewer == Client. Did you mean Client && Server?
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Oops, yes.
Torley Linden: I often have frustrations myself, like... when I'm filming a video tutorial and crashing (!).
Torley Linden: I often leave those in, of course, to accurately show what someone might expect.
Kooky Jetaime: Torley
Torley Linden: And how to deal with it, if there are workarounds/solutions.
Kooky Jetaime: I'm gonna suggest using Nicholaz' Viewer. You won't crash unless the sim does.
Wrinkle Finkel: Oh, Linden's don't have a "No-crash" mode Torley? ;-D
Torley Linden: I generally use "Viewer" over "Client".
Torley Linden: Kooky, I think it's brilliant that Nicholaz and some others have had a good history of open source servers with enhancements. I don't have enough time tho, and need to stay on official viewers (including internal builds) for a number of reasons.
Merilyn Dreamscape: My computer crashes hourly without the help of SL, so I got used to it a long time ago\
Kooky Jetaime: Well, I'm giving you an option to make your vids without crashing, unless there is a ui issue for that particular one
Torley Linden: Looking back though, a lot of these difficulties will look laughable. Much as we look at a 20 MB hard drive for US$1000 and laugh at... that is how things used to be!
Torley Linden: Kooky: I don't crash *that* much but the first 1.20 RC0 was horrible to me.
Kooky Jetaime: Torley - are you on Win or Lin?
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Can only look back from future if you get there in the first place.
Torley Linden: RC1 not so much. BUT... I do see the "black bars when region crossing" problem.
Torley Linden: Aye CeeJay, that's how hindsight goes.
Torley Linden: Kooky, mainly Windows.
Kooky Jetaime: Ok
Dizzy Banjo needs to go to the UI office hours.. but so far with the RC ive been getting used to Dazzle and can see some improvements in legibility ( although i am very sad to see the previous interface go ).. do you think the colour customisation could be extended to control more of the interface colour contrast etc ?
Torley Linden: Windows and sometimes Mac. Linux I've dabbled in (with much good encouragement from some Resis) but not so much.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Impression among self and many friends is that LL is in serious trouble due to scaling issues and is blowing it badly about dealing with it.
Torley Linden: Dizzy, eventually, yes. It'll be much easier to support skinning. Not yet, but that's really a "Yeah, that's coming... we're not there yet" thing.
Dizzy Banjo: ok
Torley Linden: CeeJay: I get very concerned when there are easy things we can do to address pain points but miss them. I know a lot of the hard things are being "worked on", but what specifically do you mean by "blowing it badly"? Are there some simple things you/friends believe LL is oblivious to?
Torley Linden: E.g., good communication is always an example in times like this.
Kooky Jetaime: I'm maxed out on every setting except draw, which is around 120m. My ram usage is at 770MB (I have 512MB on my video card which inflates it just a bit). At the end of this meeting I'll still be around there. But I'll bet everyone here on 1.19.1.4 will be higher at the end of this meeting.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Bad decision to introduce so many new features when underlying system is at limits of size.
Chance Abattoir: @ceejay People have been saying exactly what you are saying since the week I started. I don't think it's in any more trouble than usual.
Kooky Jetaime: Memory Usage Torley.
Kooky Jetaime: Thats my #1 LL is blowing it on
Dizzy Banjo: lol chance
Torley Linden: Some people think we shouldn't have continued to go forth with Havok 4... but... at the same time, it substantially reduces server crashes. (Some folks don't realize that.)
Jaymes Kjeller: All in all, I feel that these are indeed troubled times, both RL and SL.
Torley Linden: Yeah, memory usage is severe for me too with the viewer.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: I am only a four-month resident, but if things had been as bad in my first two weeks as in the last few weeks, i would have closed my account.
Kooky Jetaime: There have been fixes for these leaks since 1.18 version... Yet they still are present in 1.19.
Torley Linden: But then again, I do realize that when there was such a continuation of service disruptions last year, that the same sentiments were held.
Torley Linden: I remember when we had problems with a concurrency of 5,000 and a lot of doomsayers were out and about!
Kooky Jetaime: Brad's answer is they arn't being incorporated because "They Shouldn't Work" (even though they do and are stable as demonstrated by use since at least november.)
Suzy Forcella: things have greatly improved for me over the year I've been in SL
Dizzy Banjo: im getting a strange thing with RC.. my system is performing BETTER with antialiasing on.. lol.. w00t !
Wrinkle Finkel: Kooky, that memory problem would be eased if LL just eliminated textures. ;-D
Chance Abattoir: @Ceejay It comes in waves.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Then why did LL choose a development path that created a similar situation again?
CeeJay Tigerpaw: (rhetorical question)
Wrinkle Finkel: maybe we could all go to using wireframe
Wrinkle Finkel: ;-D
Kooky Jetaime: Even though there are comments in the Source Code that say "This is a hack but it works"
CeeJay Tigerpaw: *shuts up* Not the problem of anyone here ... I apologize.
Harmony Colman: things go up and down with the labs have for a long time but so far things seem to remain strong constant and improve
Jaymes Kjeller: We could...but it wouldn't look so good.
Suzy Forcella: has the behavior of the Space bar changed with the latest release viewer?
Torley Linden: I think part of the problem is there's never been another system that's closely followed Second Life... so there's no precedent in some areas. It's a difficult thing when we introduce changes that are meant to fix stuff but end up causing more problems. Always always a pain point for me.
Torley Linden: Suzy, more details please?
Suzy Forcella: in one of your tutorials you showed how to use the space bar to slow yourself down...
Suzy Forcella: hold space while moving
Torley Linden: Suzy, your chat bar is closed?
Suzy Forcella: yes
Torley Linden: Suzy, which version # are you on?
Torley Linden: I'll have to check that out later.
Dizzy Banjo: yes Torley, I think one fundamental issue is that people do not understand what a streaming 3d environment actually means technically.. and why SL it totally different proposition to a say a game engine
Suzy Forcella: 1.19.1.4
Wrinkle Finkel: that's a good point dizzy...expectations
Dizzy Banjo: it might be really good to somehow explain that
Torley Linden: Dizzy, yeah, it "looks" like a game sometimes but doesn't behave like one. Part of the problem/reward comes simultaneously with Second Life's cultural richness, yet within that, many people who disagree.
Suzy Forcella: What happens now is that I don't move if I hold down Space
Kooky Jetaime: I'm going afk, but I'll be logging cuz I'm curious
Faxian Marksman: Evening, Torley.
Torley Linden: We need to make that point stronger, and emphasize more about inworld content optimization that end-users (Residents!) have control over.
Kooky Jetaime: Suzy - thats od
Kooky Jetaime: Old
Mark Athens: Torley, may I chat with you regarding digital rights and SL Photography?
Torley Linden: (Sorry I can't reply to IMs, too much happening out in the open!)
Lisa Lowe: I am still using the pre-WindLight client now as my computer can't handle it and in basic mode everyting suddenly looks terrible usually compared to before WindLight. Will there be support for these older clients or will I be forced to quit SL/buy new hardware soon?
Torley Linden: Mark, what specifically? Feel free to ask about it, I may not know tho.
Torley Linden: And by the way... just to be clear... I no longer work so closely with the Issue Tracker and bugs because my focus has shifted to Resident Education (like video tutorials), so pardon if I'm drawing blanks in some areas.
Jaymes Kjeller: Which is one thing I like about Second Life, is that you can meet just about anyone.
Mark Athens: my partner and I take numerous landscape-style pictures in SL
Mark Athens: we compose, build, lighting, effort in setting the picture etc
Dizzy Banjo: yeh just demonstrating the complexity of what the SL architecture does.. would help people sympathise with the various issues that come up.. and feel more involved in the process of making it work better etc
Merilyn Dreamscape: there is still a pre-windlight veiwer available? My poor old comp is having a hard time keeping up with windlight and would greatly prefer the old version
Torley Linden: Lisa: What specifically looks terrible? It shouldn't look *that* much worse (I know of some bugs), and we can't support systems that don't meet our System Requirements. Even at a minimal level tho, some of the Environment Editor controls will work, so you may be able to customize some things more to your liking.
Faxian Marksman: So, Torley, what's comming up next? -- In the teaching videos I mean.
Mark Athens: so the immediate issue is, we posted one of these pictures as a piece of SL Art in a donation show, and we were pinged by a person
Lisa Lowe: With basic settings all colors and light look different
Torley Linden: And you can turn WindLight off in Preferences > Graphics tab by unchecking "Atmospheric Shaders". You may need to also check "Custom" to see the controls under the slider.
Mark Athens: stating that we used a bit of his copyrighted texture in the picture
Lisa Lowe: not wthen i use the pre WindLight client, then it still looks ok
Mark Athens: we did, but it was a small part of a larger setting, and we did not take the picture for purposes of reselling it as texture
Mark Athens: but as art in and of itself
Lisa Lowe: Without Atmospheric, a lot of light is lost
Torley Linden: Faxian: LAND series (epic, lots of those, very big topic with many sub-topics), this week's Tip of the Week will be on Creating & Uploading Animations, and there's another volume of QUICKTIPS due in the next 2-3 weeks or so. Also working a lot on promoting them in places they're not getting enough attention.
Lisa Lowe: not very nice colors either
Torley Linden: Lisa, yes, that's precisely because WindLight makes a big difference.
Merilyn Dreamscape: I keep having issues where random textures decide to stretch themselves across My screen away from their objects. I have pictures I can put into My MySpace account if it would help explain what I mean
Faxian Marksman: Looking foraward to it, chap.
Mark Athens: so Torley, the question is, do you believe RL laws apply to photography issues here in SL?
Lisa Lowe: I noticed :(
Torley Linden: Thanks Faxian. :)
Faxian Marksman: :D
Dizzy Banjo: also sometimes in situations like this i go to a customised LOW setting .. with avatar imposters on low also.. and basically everything on low.. which gets FPS up to reasonable rates
Lisa Lowe: Using Atmospheric slow me down to 2 frames per second
Faxian Marksman: ( I hear lovely music.)
Torley Linden: Mark, well first of all, I have very little legal knowledge. I'd say if someone else has a problem with content *within* Second Life then they could file a DMCA to try to protect their intellectual property rights. Outside of SL they'd still need to have a lawyer.
Mark Athens: nods
Qie Niangao: just curious, Mark : was it a building texture? or... what?
Wrinkle Finkel: well, it is interesting topic...in RL, sometimes you need permission to photograph people.
Torley Linden: Preferences > Graphics on "Low" should be as fast or faster than previous, non-WindLight viewers due to numerous code optimizations. (Some stuff like Shiny is actually faster, and there's a lot of cleanup that surprisingly did make SL more compatible on some, but not all, hardware configurations. There were more details on that in the WindLight podcast... if you missed it, http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/04/07/inside-the-lab-podcast-with-the-windlight-team/ )
Harmony Colman: ok everyone sorry to bable and leave
Mark Athens: in RL law, photography of public buildings, landscapes, or taken from a public location are not covered under usual copyright law
Harmony Colman: but nap time for a pregnat lady it was nice to meet all of you
Torley Linden: Yeah Wrinkle, on private spaces, I remember Thomas Hawk said something like that.
Torley Linden: I understand protecting rights, but some people... laws or no laws... are just jerks!
Dizzy Banjo: manzanillo.. whats that Mark ?
Mark Athens: it was a picture of a texture blown up and covering an interesting building, where we moved the camera view up closely
Chance Abattoir: Nice to meet you, Harmony.
Harmony Colman: torley thanks always for being fantastic and continueing to keep up the good work
Mark Athens: to get a unique surreal view
Torley Linden: Take care Harmony!
Mark Athens: Manzanillo is our Art Gallery
Wrinkle Finkel: Not sure in here...for example..if you are on your land Torley...I take your picture..
Harmony Colman: :)
Harmony Colman: huggles to all
Dizzy Banjo: ah interesting :D
Torley Linden: Sometimes I've been contacted by folks who asked me to credit them specifically for photographing a build they made... I edited my Flickr page to reflect that.
Mark Athens: exactly!
Faxian Marksman: Right you are Torley. I met this guy today that wouldn't listen, no matter what. I'd say he gave me grief, but then again..
Mark Athens: and we do that constantly, all the locales we travel to we include notes on where the pic was taken
CeeJay Tigerpaw: CUL Harmony
Taryn London: *hugs* See you soon Harm
Mark Athens: SL offers a unique oppty to actually "experience" art, rather than just see it on the wall
Torley Linden: Yeah Mark, I like how it literally "comes off the wall", or in 3D spaces, you can look into it deeply.
Raloc Dorado is Offline
Mark Athens: we take pictures expressly as art, never used as textures, prims, etc
Mark Athens: it would be tough to re use as a texture anyways, because of the random bits of the pics themselves
Faxian Marksman: (( Torlay, is this you playing the piano? ))
Faxian Marksman: Torley*
Torley Linden: Yes Faxian it is!
Torley Linden: I have that and more piano music @ http://torley.com/piano ;)
Faxian Marksman: Wow, nice playing!
Tiger Nosferatu: You're quite good
Dizzy Banjo is wondering at the mo if its worth getting a 3d connextion thingy.. cos he is so used to using mouse / keys very intuiatively.. however.. perhaps there could be interesting ways of controlling objects as part of artistic installtions with it that wouldnt be possible with any other system.. hmmmmmm
Torley Linden: Thanks!
Wrinkle Finkel: as art, not textures for prims Mark? How do you display it in world if you don't put it on a prim?
Mark Athens: Wrinkle, the point is the purpose of the art is as art itself
Faxian Marksman: Would you mind if I had it playing at my house?
Mark Athens: yes displayed on prim, but no not used as texture
Torley Linden: Dizzy, what's getting interesting is the different configs I've seen it in. I like mine a lot and I use mine with right hand but some people (right-handed) use it in their left hand while their mouse is in their right. I wonder if anyone's using it with their feet. The Flycam stuff is very nice for sure.
Dizzy Banjo wants to link his Wii to control SL.. does anyone know of any code to do that ?
Mark Athens: alright so I guess there is no precedent regarding SL photography then
Mark Athens: besides the obvious texture stealing issues
Torley Linden: Yeah I haven't heard of any big stories on that, Mark.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: I used a 3D mouse once, long ago -- it was a magnetic gadget -- predictably, we called it a "bat".
Mark Athens: well soon enough!
Torley Linden: Dizzy, not offhand, I wonder if SignpostMarv does... if anyone would know, it'd likely be him.
Dizzy Banjo pings SMM
Lisa Lowe: Torley....as a mentor I often get the question on the OI's/HI's "What is SL about?" Could you make a video about nice places, avatars, live music and whatever is out there? Maybe post it on the website so we can direct them to that? A sort of first impression video? I bet your enthousiams would inspire many to stay in SL :)
Multi Chair Crate v1.0.42 (TORLEY MOD) whispers: Maximum number of chairs reached, please rez another Multi Chair table.
Mark Athens: in the RL, my partner and I were perusing an art fair this weekend, and we saw in a booth there art we recognized here in SL
Lucent Melnik is Online
Mark Athens: the crossover from RL to SL in the area of art is only going to intensify
Torley Linden: I look forward to that Mark, more creativity flourishing!
Mark Athens: me too :)
Wrinkle Finkel: Lisa, there are a lot of resource existing..and a number of books out now..
Wrinkle Finkel: you could recommend
Tiger Nosferatu: It was nice meeting you all! Merilyn and I are going to run off, sorry much wasn't said by me, but I'll be sure to visit again one of these weeks!
CeeJay Tigerpaw: CUL
Faxian Marksman: See you later Tiger.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: As one tiger to another, keep the faith!
Faxian Marksman: -- Looking foraward to it.
Torley Linden: Lisa, that's a good question but it's a dangerous one because different people seek different things and there couldn't only be one. I had an internal discussion related from the viewpoints of game-players, educators, businesspeople, etc. We could summarize some of it but I'm not sure that'd be as effective as, say, several targeted ones. But I know IMVU has racked up mega views by embedding a "What is IMVU?" on their website.
Michelle Babii: TY for your time Torley
Torley Linden: Take care Tiger, thanks for coming!
Mark Athens: thank you Torley, for your input :)
Merilyn Dreamscape: I'm taking off as well, thank you everyone^^
Torley Linden: Nevertheless Lisa I'm open to the possibility...
Merilyn Dreamscape: this was definitely enlightening
Mark Athens: if someone in your world stumbles over or you hear about photography being an issue, could you let me know somehow?
Torley Linden: I know before we've encouraged Residents in contests to make videos about "What is SL?" and the diversity was pretty cool, but again, points to all the different possibilities.
Faxian Marksman: Torley, I've always been meaning to ask.. And I believe you've heard this question before..
Faxian Marksman: What's with the watermelons..? :P
Torley Linden: Mark: Alas I have too much to keep track of and I don't want to make a promise I can't keep, but if it did become a big issue, you'd likely hear about it in the SL news. ;)
Mark Athens nods
Mark Athens: alright, carry on then :)
Torley Linden: =)
Mark Athens: ciao :)
Torley Linden: Faxian, oh, they appeal to all my senses. They taste good, look really cool, they smell nice too.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: And they make such a satisfying SPLAT when dropped ....
Torley Linden: Watermelons also have a key role in several world mythologies.
Faxian Marksman: (( Can't say that watermelons have a smell :o))
Torley Linden: And they're very funny to talk about.
Torley Linden: In China in the rural countryside, there were "melon Robin Hoods" who stole melons and gave them to the poor.
Torley Linden: There's a quirky Taiwanese movie (I think it's Taiwanese) where the people run out of water so they need to use melon juice.
Torley Linden: It's not kid-friendly but I saw the trailer and laughed so much.
Faxian Marksman: Ha ha
Maniko Manamiko: lol ment to activate sl didn want to sit on you
Kooky Jetaime: And they were Gallager's favorite thing, IIRC
Torley Linden: Haha yes, to SMASH!
Torley Linden: And that's why I'm at odds with Gallagher and prefer Lewis Black. At least he just RANTS, doesn't destroy melonz. ;)
Kooky Jetaime: Love Lewis Black :)
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Plust the one in Buckaroo Banzai with the electrodes ...
Faxian Marksman: haha
Torley Linden: I like how Lewis Black gets increasingly agitated during his rants.
Kooky Jetaime: Though Root of Evil, I don't think its gonna make it.
Torley Linden: Haha CeeJay, I wanted to like that movie SO MUCH but I didn't watch it all the way through.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: I loved some of the lines.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: I still have a Yoyodine Palo Alto Research Lab coffee mug.
Faxian Marksman: Well, talking about movies and veggies.. Revenge of the killer tomatoes are the best :P
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Someone got some silkscreened when I was working at a lab there.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: *Yoyodyne
CeeJay Tigerpaw: (Actually Schlumberger -- the lawyers were upset that we had violated the trademark.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: but the mugs were *very* popular...)
Kooky Jetaime: Roflol
Kooky Jetaime: Usually the blood sucking laywers go after the profiteers, not the end users
Torley Linden: Yoyodyne is a very good name for a corporation.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: We were the Lab -- they needed us, and we could all get jobs anywhere else, they knew enough to shut up.
Torley Linden: I like Weyland-Yutani too.
Torley Linden: Haha CeeJay, that's hilarious.
Torley Linden: It's such a WEIRD mix of names.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: The mugs were all personalized, all of us had first names of "John".
Torley Linden: Hahahaha.
Torley Linden: I know that reference.
Kooky Jetaime: Slashdot had a poll a few weeks back for the best sci-fi company
Kooky Jetaime: let me look
IM: Spider Mycron: Hello every one .. feel free to send your events to me likethe note card said : we will have all of our events just fresh :)

Torley Linden: I contacted Aestival Cohen but haven't heard back from her, she was THE original maker of Studio Ghibli-like avatars!
IM: Gypsyrose Singh: hello
CeeJay Tigerpaw: YAAYY Miyazaki!
Torley Linden: I'm a big fan of Cyberpunk and all the stuff within...
Kooky Jetaime: Other options were

IM: Gypsyrose Singh: did you mean for me to seel on the web thru SLX?
Dizzy Banjo needs to get the soundtrack to Castle in the Sky
Kooky Jetaime: Omni Consumer Products, CHOAM, Tyrell Corp. Maas-Biotek, InGen
Lisa Lowe: Torley, could you tell me something about your other activities at LL besides making the video's please?
Dizzy Banjo: lol Kooky
IM: Orteil Reinard: Yeah, I have my shop in SLX too
CeeJay Tigerpaw: When they write the real history of Cyberspace, though, William Gibson will just get a footnote; most of the first chapter will be about us.
IM: Orteil Reinard: Can we send a link to our SLX profile, and not necessarily a landmark ?
Torley Linden: Lisa, I only make videos. Just kidding! Haha... well it's certainly the major focus.
IM: Gypsyrose Singh: oh Orteil, how do you do that?
IM: Spider Mycron: yes Gypsy . if you don;t have land , you can come to place SLX box over this class room to sell by SLX
Lisa Lowe: lol
Kooky Jetaime: When they write the history, Neal Stephenson better have a place
Lisa Lowe: lucky you :)
Faxian Marksman: (( Torley, you made me addicted to that melody of yours.. I shall sue you now :P))
Torley Linden: Well, I've done a lot of previous stuff, http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Torley_Linden
IM: Spider Mycron: Gypsy justeasy .. you need to register by slx
Torley Linden: Faxian, awwwww.
IM: Gypsyrose Singh: really? I didn't know
IM: Orteil Reinard: I don't actually have a "shop" in SLX, I just put my stuff on there, that's all
Kooky Jetaime: The first time I ran into the name Da5id
Torley Linden: That page has sort of my career info @ LL but currently, I also help Marketing/PR do press shots for stock photography/media usage.
IM: Gypsyrose Singh: I don't have land
IM: Spider Mycron: i havemy best selling there
Torley Linden: (Which are legally cleared.)
Torley Linden: Kooky, I could never figure out how that's actually pronounced.
IM: Spider Mycron: Gypsy .. then IM me i will show u every step
Taryn London: My friend has "Poor Impulse Control" as a tag in SL :P
Kooky Jetaime: David I think
Torley Linden: Oh yeah, V = 5.
Torley Linden: OH MY GOSH, I just realized that!
Torley Linden: Haha Taryn, first person I saw with that title was Jai Nomad.
Faxian Marksman: Ha ha
Kooky Jetaime: I just loved the name Hiro Protaginist
Kooky Jetaime chuckles
IM: Gypsyrose Singh: thank you spider
Taryn London: Me too, great name
Torley Linden: Jai Nomad and CrowCatcher Valen back in the days of... Magenta. *thinks of old regions*
Torley Linden: Yeah, LOL, that's a very good name.
Dizzy Banjo: you know Torley, the other day .. on a mountaintop of Gaeta the new continent that popped up on the grid.. i was talking with a crowd of residents, many of whom were very disgruntled at LL .. one suggestion that came up, to increase a sense of community / communication .. was that you do a huge tour of the grid.. meeting and greeting squillions of residents... i thought it was quite nice.. like a sort of big Torleyroadshow
Torley Linden: In Diamond Age, I TOTALLY like the name Lord Chung-Sik Finkle-McGraw!
Faxian Marksman: Hahaha
Dizzy Banjo: maybe you could do it.. in a giant flying watermelon
Faxian Marksman: Just the name McGraw makes it manly
IM: Spider Mycron: uw
Torley Linden: Dizzy, oooh yeah some Lindens (like my Mentor, Melissa) suggested that too. Maybe I should do more Second Life Videoblogging. One open question I had tho was, what about many people who aren't on voice? Reading lines of text isn't so interesting...
IM: Bryan Caldwell: Spider...just FYI, I'm opening half of my second floor for gallery space, too.
Torley Linden: When I started my Second Life, I was very happy to explore Second Life a lot. Doing video tutorials gets me closer to those roots, so I'm happy.
Torley Linden: Again.
IM: Spider Mycron: yeah send me details plz and when you have event send fresh details at time
Torley Linden: Faxian, did you ever see the Cracked.com article of the top manliest names?
Kooky Jetaime: I could have swore I was sitting on the chair
Faxian Marksman: No! I ought to do that :P
Torley Linden: http://www.cracked.com/article_14982_9-manliest-names-in-world.html
Faxian Marksman: Thanks
Torley Linden: I like Cracked's humor on the website so much... I haven't really read the mag but the webpages LOLOLOL.
Faxian Marksman: The "Armstrong" name.. Shiesh, musta been a hell'of a story ;P
Torley Linden: I had this other idea to go around randomly teleporting from the perspective of a Quantum Leap-type character and find myself at a loss to describe where I had ended up in.
Torley Linden: Hahaha.
Torley Linden: I wonder if anyone's made a Chef's apron with GlaDOS lines on it.
SL Exchange Magic Box black owned by TerdNerd Barbosa gave you 'FREEBIE SCULPT CONCEPT FULL PERMS RESELLABLE!! BOXED' ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Winkie/182/118/259 ).
Torley Linden: (It got so quiet.)
Faxian Marksman: "This was a triumpph..!
Dizzy Banjo: oo.. looks on Melissa's profile and see's Linden University..
Torley Linden: "My cakes are not lies."
Kooky Jetaime: Roflol
Dizzy Banjo: on sneaky LiaisonLand.. inaccessable.. :(
Torley Linden: Oh LOL Dizzy, yeah that's an internal training course...
Dizzy Banjo: lol
Kooky Jetaime: Torley *Points above his head.. it IS a lie
SL Exchange Magic Box standard owned by Tooter Claxton gave you 'freebie-tooter-textures' ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Oculea/198/241/43 ).
Faxian Marksman: "For the good of all of us.. except the ones who are dead..!"
Dizzy Banjo: ive seen it Kooky
Giusto Babenco is Offline
Dizzy Banjo: lol
Torley Linden: so we have these sessions, called Linden U's, where a given Linden will teach others about topics...
Torley Linden: be it building, land, economics, etc.
SL Exchange Magic Box standard owned by EyeR Hax gave you 'Deagle.50 Prototype The K*Lolsbs' ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Huckleberry/37/132/78 ).
Dizzy Banjo: lol cool
Faxian Marksman: LOL
Faxian Marksman: I love that comment
Torley Linden: Jonathan Coulton doth fill the position of "geek troubador" so well!
Faxian Marksman: The last fight was the best of all xD
Torley Linden: I'd love to voice-act a villain in a video game.
Chance Abattoir: Don't you already do that?
Torley Linden: I've been practicing doing the sinister/creepy thing. Ever since I played Deus Ex I've been enamored with Tom Hall's voice.
Faxian Marksman: Listening to your video's that would fit you perfectly :D
Dithean Ringo: lol
Dizzy Banjo wants to know what software they used for that voice manipulation.. hmm ponders
Arawn Spitteler: The best rolls are villainous, but the stories come out all wrong
Kooky Jetaime: Dizzy - I think they say how
Torley Linden: Dizzy, yeah, I'm curious too, there's obviously some pitchshifting/correction taken to the extreme...
Kooky Jetaime: if you listen to the commentary
Chance Abattoir: Kidding.
Dizzy Banjo: sounds like autotune / melodyne
Torley Linden: I wonder if there's an easy formula to do the GlaDOS vox tho.
Torley Linden: The new Melodyne is so awesome, I think you told me about it, Dizzy?
Torley Linden: Melodyne 2 (at last).
Dizzy Banjo: maybe..
Dizzy Banjo: its cool :D
SL Exchange Magic Box standard owned by Kamizu Fold gave you 'Final Fantasy 7 Highwind' ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Otgoreum/146/223/39 ).
Dizzy Banjo: its saved many a vocalists ass at my studio
Torley Linden: Being able to correct polyphonic stuffl ike that, sooo neat. The demo was lovely how the same music shifted between the background and the foreground, depending on what the narrator needed to emphasize.
Torley Linden: Hahahaha.
Faxian Marksman: Portals is one of the greatest games they have ever unleashed..!
Torley Linden: "SAVED A VOCALIST'S ASS AWARD!"
Kooky Jetaime: I think half of it was true voice work, They played the lines through a voice synth, standard Text 2 Speach, then had her read the lines trying to use the same rythem and anunciation
Kooky Jetaime: then they combined the two
Torley Linden: Faxian: It seems like one of those gems that at first sight, looked "cool" but it really turned into a phenom.
Dizzy Banjo: ah
Dizzy Banjo: lol
Dizzy Banjo: there is a great effect called Morph.. which literally does stuff like that
Dizzy Banjo: Voxendo make it
Torley Linden: I don't think there's a single computer game journalist who doesn't know about Portal.
Dizzy Banjo: lol
Dizzy Banjo: hey cahse
Torley Linden: Hmmm Voxengo makes Elephant (my fave limiter) too.
Dizzy Banjo: chase*
Faxian Marksman: ha ha
Kooky Jetaime: Or Steam, or the whole Orange Box
Chase Marellan: Hi, all
Kooky Jetaime SOOO hopes they put a portal gun in HL2:Ep3
Dizzy Banjo: ah its bound to happen Kooky
SL Exchange Magic Box standard owned by MathieuBC Noel gave you 'Missile nuke final 1' ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Woodhenville/19/9/26 ).
Kooky Jetaime: They set it up
Torley Linden: I recommend for anyone and everyone, if you're gonna lay down some voice tracks for a voiceover, at the very least, if you can plugin a limiter, go for it. It'll let ya amp up the volume without uggggly digital clipping.
Faxian Marksman: I don't think it's going to happen.
Kooky Jetaime: And the beauty of it is
Dizzy Banjo: aperture is already mentioned
Kooky Jetaime: they don't even have to waste game time on training the player cept for maybe a bit of remedial
Torley Linden: I wish inworld voice had volume leveling.
Faxian Marksman: The staff in Aperture Science is dead remember.
Kooky Jetaime: Yep, with the Borealis
Taryn London: I'm heading out... see you later all :)
Taryn London: Take care Torley
Torley Linden: Blue Linden wanted to name one programme here Aperture Science, based on improving new user experience. ;)
Torley Linden: Have a good one Taryn!
Torley Linden: Nice to see yas! :)
Taryn London: you too :)
Faxian Marksman: Most of them was gassed down by GlaDOS
Torley Linden: :D
Kooky Jetaime: Faxian - but the Borealis was an AS Ship, and its set up that there is something on that ship
Zand Gundersen: by
Dizzy Banjo wants a portal gun in SL.. so he can fire off a portal under people who are griefing and drop them into the fire
Torley Linden: I like sentient warships.
Kooky Jetaime: Wait here while I warm up the Neuro-Toxin
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Depends what they are thinking...
Chase Marellan: Torley, I'm sorry to interrupt, but I wanted to make sure I didn't miss Zand Gundersen: who's responsible for Marketing and PR, is that still Catherine?
Torley Linden: I LOVE tales of agrarian races who, through upheaval and conflict, become the interstellar aggressors.
Faxian Marksman: ( But the gun you were playing with in Portals was the Alpha version of it)
CeeJay Tigerpaw: I recall a political cartoon at the time of the Falklands war ...
Torley Linden: Chase: Yes, we have several Lindens working in that dept., Melissa and Red Linden also are.
Kooky Jetaime: Was it Faxian?
Chase Marellan: Ah, cool. Who's the best bet for Relay for Life?
Faxian Marksman: As far as I remember, yes it was.
Kooky Jetaime: Remember, there were at least 2
Torley Linden: Apparently New Order's "Blue Monday" is about the Falklands War. Who would've known?
Faxian Marksman: But I heard rumors about a second portal game aswell
Jaymes Kjeller: I never knew that
CeeJay Tigerpaw: it showed an Exocet antishipping missile speeding over the waves, thinking "The hell with this kamikaze business, I am heading for Tahiti."
Torley Linden: Chase: Hmm I'd have to say use the general presscontact@secondlife.com email addy. :)
Kooky Jetaime: Hey All
Torley Linden: That'll get to all of them I believe.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Artificial intelligence may yet save the world.
Chase Marellan: thank you
Kooky Jetaime: The latest version of Firefox is NOT compatable with PicLens if you use it.
Torley Linden: You're welcome!
Torley Linden: Kooky, I liked Piclens.
Kooky Jetaime: Ok, I'm off to Everett's
Jaymes Kjeller: Mind you, "Blue Monday" is one of my favorite New Order songs.
Chase Marellan can relax and enjoy now. :)
Kooky Jetaime: I think it needs some work
Torley Linden: I like the bassline to "Blue Monday" so much.
Dizzy Banjo: correction from earlier : PROSONIQ make Morph..
Kooky Jetaime: but I like it too
Torley Linden: It can't be mistaken for anything else... sign of greatness!
Torley Linden: That's another plugin manufacturer I haven't heard of in awhile.
Torley Linden: HOW... DOES IT FEEL... etc.
Kooky Jetaime: I'd like it if you could minimize it instead of closing it when you focus on a picture's site.
Dizzy Banjo: http://www.prosoniq.com/main/prosoniq-morph/
Kooky Jetaime: Anyone else going to Everett's
Kooky Jetaime: ?
Faxian Marksman: "Commander Flex Plexico, at your service!"
Torley Linden: I like Everett!
Torley Linden: :D
Faxian Marksman: LOL
Free Radar HUD v1.1 by Crystal Gadgets
Torley Linden: Ah the joy of names.
Torley Linden: Well I'd like to thank each and all of you for coming to my office hour... I need to leave earlier than I normally do because I have errands to run. Pardon for that, but there'll be another office hour next week. :)
Chase Marellan: Nice to see you, Torley!
Dizzy Banjo: cu Torley :)
Dithean Ringo: thanks for your time Torley
Faxian Marksman: Aww. How sad.
Torley Linden: And you too Chase, DIzzy, Dithean, everyone!
Jaymes Kjeller: See you around, Torley! :)
Torley Linden: THE SAGA CONTINUES...
Faxian Marksman: I'll see you soon Torley
Lisa Lowe: Thanks Torley. Nice meeting you :)
Dithean Ringo: *^_^*
Dizzy Banjo: byee :D
Torley Linden: Bye Faxian, Jaymes, Lisa, and thanx SO much again for coming to visit me! =D
Torley Linden: Byebye!
