Hamilton introduces himself. Comment about him being a ‘grid stability spokesman” [er Robin’s note. Hamilton’s initial projects at LL are publishing service quality metrics to the community and reducing inventory loss.

Resident comments & discussion on inventory loss:

‘Top 5’ Reasons for: - database instability - enormous inventories - inbound and outbound data connections overloading - lag issues with the asset server - seems to coincide with grid problems - items built in-world don’t appear in inventory - graphics card issue: inventory there but you can’t see it - smaller inventory = less problems due to everything being cached on PC; when queueing server it has a lot of searching to do and may time out resulting in items missing from inventory - clothing often lost is accessing it during crashes - SL doesn’t have more insight in to prime causes (not symptoms)

Three kinds of inventory losses: - disappearing - still there but can’t rez - error when trying to use

Various comments from residents about never having inventory loss issues, sometimes having them linked to crashes (but not necessarily directly); parts of library disappearing (sub folders under Scult Textures); losses not related to grid failures; objects added to note cards; since you can only backup items that are copyable, purchased items can’t be backed up (suggestions like how sims work with contact contiedge and they restore backup—that’s needed for inventories; inventory stability doesn’t seem to improve by putting items in prims; permissions can be issues for backing up;

General discussion of gestures getting lost; missing gesture reported fixed internally at http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-333.

Question from Hamilton: how many people here reset their client cache and did objects ever reappear after that: - Iridium does that, and items don’t reappear - Arabella Nemeth experiences same - Revolution Perenti—maybe there should be uid or md5 in the database to stop having the same item appear twice (compare it to what already exists in the database)

Question from Hamilton: Has anyone ever lost inventory during a sim restart that was not a crash but maintenance (i.e. when you get a warning message about the sim restarting in 5 minutes): - the phrase “http/1.1 304 not modified” comes to mind - lost things on a sim, but took ¾ days for recovery - never; never had this happen… - summation: seems like unintentional crashes are the only problem—not intentional restarts

Suggestions:

- Perhaps having a special pay-for system to cover costs for better backups? - Maybe better messaging from LL re: inventories/mgmt (better explain causes of inventory loss, ways to avoid false positives, more meaningful details & related info) - Offline inventory storage process (Hamilton to chat with Zero) - Write-up a quick description on how inventory architecture works (comment about items in prims—see above) - Per Torley: continue investigating/working on https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2281 - Implement a server journaling system
