  • [12:06] Eli Linden: noelle is trying to log in with windows build, hopefully that'll work
  • [12:06] Irene Muni: BTW, Rand, thera are questions about labels translation in the Private Forum :)
  • [12:06] Rand Linden: ok i will look at them ...
  • [12:07] Irene Muni: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Translation-Q-A/KB-label-quot-Reference-quot/m-p/882373
  • [12:07] Irene Muni: jnothan is in the agenda... without name LOL
  • [12:07] Irene Muni: jonathan, sorry
  • [12:08] Irene Muni: Hi Admiral
  • [12:08] Radioactive Rosca: greetings
  • [12:08] Torben Trautman: Hi Admiral :)
  • [12:08] Jonathan Yap: That's okay. I have just finished a rough draft of some instructions. I will wait my turn to speak. :)
  • [12:08] Irene Muni: :)
  • [12:08] Eli Linden: i'll answer #7 for me first:
  • [12:09] Irene Muni: (i can publish tomorrow the chat log)
  • [12:09] Eli Linden: Yes. Please install the latest build from viewer-development, use the XUI files from the new build to create fixes to XML files, restart Viewer to verify the fix does what's intended and does not break anything, and then attach the fix to the Jira.
  • [12:09] Torben Trautman: Agenda: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Community_Translation_User_Group
  • [12:09] Torben Trautman: ok
  • [12:09] Irene Muni: ok, understand :)
  • [12:09] Rand Linden: Well, shall we just start on the agenda items?
  • [12:10] Eli Linden: do you guys have the link to the latest viewer-development build?
  • [12:10] Rand Linden: Since we dont know if Noelle will be able to join us?
  • [12:10] Torben Trautman: I think Eli just did :)
  • [12:10] Irene Muni: Me not Eli
  • [12:10] Torben Trautman: Eli: yes
  • [12:10] Rand Linden: ok
  • [12:10] Torben Trautman: Irene: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Downloading_test_builds
  • [12:11] Irene Muni: ok, bookmarked
  • [12:11] Eli Linden: This is the link to the latest:
  • [12:11] Eli Linden: http://automated-builds-secondlife-com.s3.amazonaws.com/hg/repo/snowstorm_viewer-development/arch/CYGWIN/quicklink.html
  • [12:11] Eli Linden: windows build that is
  • [12:12] Irene Muni: ok
  • [12:12] Irene Muni: who is the moderator? LOL
  • [12:12] Rand Linden: Eli - you want to run the meeting?
  • [12:13] Eli Linden: i thought we can discuss those questions while we wait for noelle, ok?
  • [12:13] Torben Trautman: yay :)
  • [12:13] Irene Muni: ok, we can see the agenda :)
  • [12:13] Rand Linden: I think we should just go through the agenda ... cause we dont know if Noelle will make it at all
  • [12:13] Eli Linden: sure
  • [12:14] Irene Muni: Noelle is frozen in VFS LOL
  • [12:14] Irene Muni: or in waiting region handshake :)
  • [12:14] Torben Trautman: First question is: GENERAL. Improving communication:
There are many JIRAs without assignment and/or "awaiting review". We cannot know if any Linden has seen those JIRAs.
We do not know why LL decided to fix some JIRAs (some non-urgent) and why LL dedided to pospone other (some urgent).

For these and other reasons, how can we improve communication between translators and Lindens about the viewer translation?

P.S.: Is the private forum really an appropriate method of communication?
  • [12:14] Irene Muni: Interesting question :)
  • [12:15] Jonathan Yap: This is related to why I am here, item 3)
  • [12:15] Irene Muni: (the IM of the item 3 is from jonathan LOL)
  • [12:15] Eli Linden: i know i am working through Jiras assigned to me
  • [12:16] Rand Linden: aha
  • [12:16] Irene Muni: who assigned those JIRAS Eli?
  • [12:16] Eli Linden: i know that the Snowstorm team is supposed to be doing triage of unassigned Jira in VWR
  • [12:16] Irene Muni: ah ok
  • [12:16] Eli Linden: then, for localization/translation issues, ST team assigns them to me
  • [12:17] Irene Muni: and is it possible comunication about urgent/NoUrgent with Snowstorm team?
  • [12:17] Eli Linden: the priority field
  • [12:17] Eli Linden: default level is minor
  • [12:17] Torben Trautman: Eli: Is it ok if we assign l10n issues to you right away (minus the web stuff)?
  • [12:17] Irene Muni: No, the priority field don't woks :)
  • [12:18] Irene Muni: Torben I cannot assign JIRAs
  • [12:18] Jonathan Yap: My hope is that volunteers in this group can fix issue involving just text changes.
  • [12:18] Jonathan Yap: *issues
  • [12:18] Eli Linden: yes, go ahead to assign XUI issues to me :-(
  • [12:18] Torben Trautman: ok, prepare your mailbox ;)
  • [12:18] Irene Muni: Weel, what if we cannot assign JIRAs?
  • [12:18] Irene Muni: well*, sorry
  • [12:18] Eli Linden: priority field: i think it works
  • [12:18] Torben Trautman: Irene, I´ll help you with that :)
  • [12:19] Eli Linden: i in fact will look at major issues first then minor ones
  • [12:19] Irene Muni: No, priority field DON'T works, thera are major issues from Viewer 2.01. Beta
  • [12:20] Jonathan Yap: Since I am new here are the two biggest issues 1) wrong wording and 2) text not fitting ?
  • [12:20] Irene Muni: and bad translations
  • [12:20] Eli Linden: Irene: i feel it is more of a matter of ... how the ST team sees translation issues
  • [12:20] Irene Muni: and no translations LOL
  • [12:20] Irene Muni: ok eli, but I'm nort sure about how ST team can evaluate urgent translations :)
  • [12:20] Eli Linden: they are a much smaller team now than last year and therefore have different priority
  • [12:21] Jonathan Yap: Volunteers can fix bad translations / no translations -- the snowstorm team is very short of staff right now
  • [12:21] Jonathan Yap: If you have a fix all done in the format that LL needs it is much easier for it to be taken in
  • [12:21] Eli Linden: there are two kinds of "no translation"
  • [12:21] Irene Muni: OK, that (smaller team) i a good reason for improve communication :)
  • [12:22] Identity Euler: I am sorry I have to log off soon. See you next week.
  • [12:22] Eli Linden: 1. the string is new, or recently changed, so that no translation yet for any language
  • [12:22] Eli Linden: for this kind, please leave it to me to manage to translation updates
  • [12:23] Eli Linden: 2. if a language is missing a translation, but some other languages have the translation, it is a bug for that particular language
  • [12:23] Eli Linden: in this case, you can help by providing the translation in Jira
  • [12:23] Irene Muni: well ok
  • [12:23] Irene Muni: we have done that in past, ok
  • [12:23] Eli Linden: (See you Id)
  • [12:23] Torben Trautman: next question?
  • [12:24] Eli Linden: do we feel this question is largely addressed?
  • [12:24] Irene Muni: apparently item 2 of the agenda is answered
  • [12:24] Jonathan Yap: Eli, I have just written up a first pass at instructions for volunteers to create repositories which is a better use of your time as you wouldn't have to make them yourself, just review the results.
  • [12:24] Jonathan Yap: http://pastebin.com/hHjuMibB
  • [12:25] Torben Trautman: I do; we assign issues to you and set a (felt) priority
  • [12:25] Torben Trautman: and if possible provide you with a solution in xml
  • [12:25] Eli Linden: yes Torben
  • [12:25] Irene Muni: then the best way for communication is the same way until now, ok?
  • [12:26] Eli Linden: Jonathan: got it
  • [12:26] Irene Muni: JIRA & wait LOL
  • [12:26] Radioactive Rosca: eheheh
  • [12:26] Jonathan Yap: Eli, do you fell training people in this more advanced method is a good idea?
  • [12:26] Eli Linden: Irene: i wish it could go faster
  • [12:26] Jonathan Yap: *feel
  • [12:26] Torben Trautman: I know I asked that before (a while back) but do repositories make sence?
  • [12:26] Eli Linden: J: what is "more advanced method"?
  • [12:27] Jonathan Yap: I have an idea that you spend a lot of time making repos from people's xml contributions
  • [12:27] Eli Linden: J: i have yet to read it
  • [12:27] Jonathan Yap: having the volunteers make a repo and put it in bitbucket
  • [12:27] Jonathan Yap: then you just have to do a review and a pull
  • [12:28] Irene Muni: I don't know what are you talking, but no problem XD
  • [12:28] Eli Linden: j: the best way (for me) is to see xml fixes in Jira, and i'll take the fix and submit
  • [12:28] Jonathan Yap: Irene, the source code is fixed by using changes stored in a repository, one repository per change
  • [12:29] Irene Muni: ok, ok, I will learned that, you can create a step by step guide :)
  • [12:29] Irene Muni: I'm only a translator XD
  • [12:29] Jonathan Yap: It takes a Linden some time to pull in the xml file and process the change. I was thinking of a way to speed the process up a little
  • [12:29] Radioactive Rosca: that would be nice
  • [12:29] Torben Trautman: I believe this is also part of question three, isn´t it?
  • [12:29] Irene Muni: agree with admiral LOL
  • [12:29] Jonathan Yap: Yes, this is item 3
  • [12:30] Torben Trautman: Jonathan, we are a bit complicated :)
  • [12:30] Jonathan Yap: Better to have a translator make the repository then tie up a Linden with "bookkeeping" jobs
  • [12:30] Eli Linden: j: as long as translation changes go through me
  • [12:30] Torben Trautman: when we change something, it also needs to be changed in the glossary and the TM and so on
  • [12:30] Torben Trautman: so we say beep and Eli has a bunch of work :)
  • [12:30] Jonathan Yap: Eli, you would still review them and get them into viewer-development
  • [12:30] Eli Linden: yes i do
  • [12:31] Irene Muni: If I understand correctly, answer to question 2 is "no", isn`t it?
  • [12:31] Jonathan Yap: Irene, the answer is yes
  • [12:31] Torben Trautman: it´s yes, the answer was no
  • [12:31] Irene Muni: to question 2, tranlatre BEFORE publish release?
  • [12:31] Irene Muni: translate*
  • [12:31] Eli Linden: irene: correct.. unless the policy changes, the answer is no
  • [12:31] Irene Muni: ok
  • [12:32] Eli Linden: translation need cannot hold back a viewer release
  • [12:32] Radioactive Rosca: logic
  • [12:32] Eli Linden: this wasn't my idea but i can't change it
  • [12:32] Eli Linden: :-(
  • [12:32] Jonathan Yap: Irene, you can get the source code as it stands today, before a release. What Eli lets you do is something else . :)
  • [12:32] Irene Muni: jonathan, I'm not sure if the 13 spanisg translator want to manage source code :)
  • [12:33] Torben Trautman: Next agenda item would be: SPANISH. How can we tell LL what JIRAs are specially urgent? (No, the "major" priority does not work.) The list of pending JIRAs is long (see these meta issues: VWR-25534[c] and WEB-3819[c]), but not always are the JIRAs selected for fix the really urgent ones.
  • [12:33] Jonathan Yap: Irene, it is hardly any different than what you are doing now, getting at xml files in an installed viewer
  • [12:33] Torben Trautman: /me thinks this was answered
  • [12:34] Irene Muni: agree with Torben, the way is priority
  • [12:34] Eli Linden: please indicate priority (or your felt priority)
  • [12:34] Eli Linden: and, i prefer that I get VWR issues, not meta issues with sub issues
  • [12:34] Eli Linden: just plain simple VWR issues
  • [12:34] Torben Trautman: ok
  • [12:35] Irene Muni: The meta issues are for we, the translators :)
  • [12:35] Eli Linden: one VWR issue with as few problems (preferably one) as possible
  • [12:35] Irene Muni: So we can follow the JIRAs :)
  • [12:35] Eli Linden: irene: i see. no problem.
  • [12:35] Irene Muni: :)
  • [12:35] Torben Trautman: SPANISH. Is there a plan/schedule for translate the "Help" (F1) of the Viewer?
  • [12:36] Eli Linden: is it currently completely untranslated?
  • [12:36] Irene Muni: yes
  • [12:36] Eli Linden: this help content comes from Web
  • [12:36] Irene Muni: almost currently, I cannot be sure :)
  • [12:36] Eli Linden: i think it's also my impression that it hasn't been translated for quite a while
  • [12:36] Eli Linden: i'll take the question with the web team and get back to you
  • [12:37] Irene Muni: thanks :)
  • [12:37] Jonathan Yap: A new copy of that help is created for every new viewer release
  • [12:37] Torben Trautman: SPANISH. The Quick Start Guide has without translation the images (WEB-3776[c]) and some chapters (WEB-3818[c]). There are another JIRAs about the Spanish translation of the web (WEB-3819[c]), but those are urgents.
  • [12:37] Irene Muni: That question probably has the same answer.
  • [12:37] Rand Linden: Irene, much of the help content IS translated
  • [12:38] Rand Linden: Are you not seeing it in the Spanish Viewer?
  • [12:38] Irene Muni: no rand
  • [12:38] Eli Linden: are those WEB issues UNassigned?
  • [12:38] Rand Linden: Hang on
  • [12:38] Irene Muni: yes eli
  • [12:38] Rand Linden: Oh... my bad.
  • [12:38] Rand Linden: It is translated into DE, FR, and JP
  • [12:38] Rand Linden: *was* translated that is, for 2.0 release
  • [12:39] Irene Muni: hurray for Spanish residents XD
  • [12:39] Rand Linden: See for example https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Viewerhelp:Map_File/Second_Life/2.6.4
  • [12:39] Jonathan Yap: Maybe those translations are not being copied for newer releases
  • [12:39] Rand Linden: All that was actually pro. translation, actually
  • [12:39] Irene Muni: I know Rand, so the question about Spanish :)
  • [12:39] Eli Linden: ok, i'll ping them
  • [12:39] Irene Muni: ok thnaks :)
  • [12:39] Irene Muni: thanks*
  • [12:39] Rand Linden: So, for Spanish, answer is no, but we have not used any community trans. for help..... If noelle can get exec approval, we *could* start that
  • [12:40] Irene Muni: great, or we can collaborate with Perez (or...)
  • [12:40] Torben Trautman: I remember there was a swear word once on the marketplace without volunteers help so it can´t get worse ;)
  • [12:40] Irene Muni: LOL
  • [12:40] Torben Trautman: just for the transcript: Is it still okay if we provide bug fixes as updated xml files?
  • [12:41] Torben Trautman: the answer was yes
  • [12:41] Eli Linden: yes, confirmed
  • [12:41] Torben Trautman: Last question for Eli: Is it still okay if we fix truncations (and should we do those fixes in the english file?)
  • [12:41] Eli Linden: reiterate: pls use latest viewer-development xui files
  • [12:41] Eli Linden: don't use 2-week old stale xui files
  • [12:41] Torben Trautman: ok :)
  • [12:42] Eli Linden: this last question is a ... complicated one
  • [12:42] Irene Muni: Torben is complicated :)
  • [12:42] Torben Trautman: I´m sorry
  • [12:42] Irene Muni: LOL
  • [12:42] Eli Linden: on the one hand, i desperately need and welcome help with this
  • [12:42] Eli Linden: but we have to be specific about what this is about
  • [12:43] Eli Linden: first, two methods to fix truncation
  • [12:43] Eli Linden: 1) fix the non-'en' xui files, e.g. Spanish, German, only, to adjust the numbers these, as needed
  • [12:44] Eli Linden: this has created LOTS of headache
  • [12:44] Irene Muni: (as Noelle said)
  • [12:44] Irene Muni: :)
  • [12:44] Eli Linden: because once fixed, it stays that way, without being able to adapt to new 'en' changes and UI redesign
  • [12:44] Torben Trautman: local override:BAD
  • [12:44] Eli Linden: i have spent lots of time undoing them
  • [12:44] Eli Linden: yes, "local override" was the key word i used
  • [12:44] Eli Linden: i even call them evil
  • [12:45] Jonathan Yap: truncation is when a floater or panel is too narrow?
  • [12:45] Eli Linden: just yesterday i undid many such overrides in the snapshot->email floater
  • [12:45] Eli Linden: it was completely screwed up due to the overrides
  • [12:45] Torben Trautman: sometimes there is enough space on the floater but the text field is too short
  • [12:46] Eli Linden: so, i really want to avoid creating more
  • [12:46] Torben Trautman: nods
  • [12:46] Eli Linden: but i don't want to absolutely forbid them either
  • [12:47] Eli Linden: the next method (2), is global adjustment in the 'en' xui files
  • [12:47] Torben Trautman: so is it safe to say that we rather should try and fix in the -en file?
  • [12:47] Eli Linden: i conveyed and continue to convey this message to our dev team
  • [12:47] Eli Linden: that we should have a global mentality of UI design
  • [12:48] Eli Linden: just because an 'en' message is short, doesn't mean they should just fit the UI to it
  • [12:48] Torben Trautman: true :)
  • [12:48] Irene Muni: veeeeery true
  • [12:48] Eli Linden: i want the UI to be "loose" and accommodate longer text in different languages
  • [12:49] Eli Linden: even at the expense of the English 'en' UI NOT looking the sharpest
  • [12:49] Eli Linden: this advocacy met with some resistence
  • [12:49] Irene Muni: "some"? LOL
  • [12:49] Eli Linden: to put it mildly
  • [12:49] Irene Muni: hehehehe
  • [12:49] Eli Linden: so, my approach has been:
  • [12:49] Radioactive Rosca: :-)
  • [12:50] Eli Linden: i fix truncation issues myself when they are simple
  • [12:50] Eli Linden: not involving more than 1 or 2 numbers
  • [12:50] Eli Linden: and i can see the effect of my fix
  • [12:50] Eli Linden: then i submit the changes in 'en' to make it wide enough for all languages
  • [12:51] Eli Linden: but, sometimes the design is so narrow that there is no way to expand
  • [12:51] Eli Linden: or sometimes it is beyond my knowledge of the UI to fix myself
  • [12:51] Eli Linden: for those cases, i change the VWR to STORM and let the dev team fix them
  • [12:52] Eli Linden: i provide them with all the translations for all languages
  • [12:52] Eli Linden: for the issues, so they can see which languages require the most space
  • [12:52] Eli Linden: and can use that info to adjust the UI globally
  • [12:52] Irene Muni: Rand has the solution: use Lithium team LOL (sorry for the bad joke)
  • [12:52] Rand Linden: ha
  • [12:52] Torben Trautman: hehe *good* one Irene
  • [12:53] Eli Linden: so, as far as residents helping with truncation goes:
  • [12:53] Eli Linden: i welcome this, if you know how to adjust 'en' global in a minimum way possible
  • [12:53] Eli Linden: i.e. without making the 'en' UI look so drastically different
  • [12:54] Jonathan Yap: There is a UI preview tool you can activate from the login page. I find that helpful sometimes to see a size change or to get the name of an element
  • [12:54] Eli Linden: then pls go ahead to do it and attach your xml fix in Jira
  • [12:54] Torben Trautman: ok, so easy fixes yes - messing with snowstorm´s toy no
  • [12:54] Eli Linden: j: that tool is getting more and more inadequate
  • [12:54] Eli Linden: it is very outdated and doesn't work for all floaters and panels
  • [12:54] Eli Linden: but use it as you see fit
  • [12:54] Irene Muni: Seriously, Eli, thank you very much for the explanation, I'm a ignoramus in this matters, but I understand your explanation, thanks, really
  • [12:55] Torben Trautman: yes, thank you!
  • [12:55] Eli Linden: truncation is my #1 pain point
  • [12:55] Eli Linden: if you haven't noticed that
  • [12:55] Radioactive Rosca: indeed
  • [12:55] Torben Trautman: nods
  • [12:55] Irene Muni: yes :)
  • [12:55] Eli Linden: i hope that answers the question
  • [12:55] Torben Trautman: :)
  • [12:55] Irene Muni: off topic -> proposal to CEO: new Lindens for help to Eli :) (and Rand, and, ST team, and web team, and...)
  • [12:56] Rand Linden: yes!
  • [12:56] Torben Trautman: Rand, did you see my last comment on the Lithium issue?
  • [12:56] Eli Linden: should we move to non-Eli questions?
