Note

This wasn't a monthly meeting of the GsL but one Office Hour of Lexie Linden whith localization manager Danica Linden as guest speaker. The Office Hour was related to the currently starting Community Translation Project.

Summary

  1. Community Translation Project started on August 4th (see also VTeam Blog)
  2. Using the PJira for translation projects is a temporarily solution, until a Localization Portal is established.[1]
    1. Localization Portal will be neither Wiki nor PJira but some other software.[2]
    2. Localization Portal will allow to translate Viewer, KB and Blog.[1]
  3. Current Translation Project contains 25 most urgent KB articles[3]
More then 100 might come up during the process.[4]
  4. It's fine to copy KB articles to the Wiki, translate them there and then add them to the PJira.[5]
  5. Danica Linden doesn't have a Linden Bear but promised to bring one to the next meeting.[6]

  • [10:11 SLT] Danica Linden: :)
  • [10:11 SLT] Zai Lynch: i don't want to be the first one who starts bitching so plz someone else ask before i do ^_^
  • [10:11 SLT] Lexie Linden: haha
  • [10:11 SLT] Danica Linden: haha
  • [10:11 SLT] Lexie Linden: go for it
  • [10:11 SLT] Lexie Linden gets ready
  • [10:11 SLT] Lexie Linden: lol
  • [10:11 SLT] Rails Bailey: mentors dont bitch
  • [10:11 SLT] Zai Lynch: ok... as you know, i'm totally not fine with the jira beeing used for it... i don't see any (real) argument for not using the wiki
  • [10:12 SLT] Zai Lynch: so you sure got some or wouldn't have choosen the jira otherwise... which are those?
  • [10:12 SLT] Lexie Linden: Danica...did you want to go over the reasons why Pjira was chosen over wiki?
  • [10:12 SLT] Danica Linden: sure
  • [10:13 SLT] Lexie Linden: There are quite a few
  • [10:13 SLT] Danica Linden: so, we needed an easier way to track the progress on localization
  • [10:13 SLT] Danica Linden: this is, I should say, only an interim solution
  • [10:13 SLT] Danica Linden: we are in the process of putting together requirements for a localization portal
  • [10:14 SLT] Tom32 Anatine: I think that the main positive effect of using the Jira is the simple way to assign a task to myself, on the wiki this would have to be done through a list of stuff that needs to be done in the project, as it is the case for our mentors tralsation project main page, where we have to tag our name, furthermore the implemntation of external data as screenshots seems easier in the JIRA and it is easier to overview *hides*
  • [10:14 SLT] Danica Linden: that will include all our product assets: viewer strings, web strings, KB's, blog, etc
  • [10:14 SLT] Danica Linden: that system will actively be leveraging translation memory
  • [10:14 SLT] Lexie Linden: (true Tom32)
  • [10:14 SLT] Lexie Linden: right..so this is for now
  • [10:14 SLT] Lexie Linden: In the future it is going to be much easier
  • [10:14 SLT] Waya Sion: in most cases, a wiki would be too editible by random people to be useful
  • [10:14 SLT] Danica Linden: yes
  • [10:15 SLT] Zai Lynch: you can upload pictures to the wiki as easy as you upload them to the jira... so this isn't a reason. assigning via click or via writing your name... ok. it's less work ^^
  • [10:15 SLT] Danica Linden: as you saw, we now have KB articles, which is new area that we are opening up to community translation
  • [10:15 SLT] Zai Lynch: so l10n portal means: new software? not jira, not wiki but something totally different?
  • [10:15 SLT] Lexie Linden: Zai..you had mentioned an idea to me awhile back about people using their user pages if they did not want to use the Pjira?
  • [10:16 SLT] Danica Linden: and the flow was immesurably easier to track for us, really
  • [10:16 SLT] Lexie Linden: yes it will be new Zai
  • [10:16 SLT] Zai Lynch: yeah. or some project page
  • [10:16 SLT] Lexie Linden: you might want to tell Danica a bit about that idea as an option..
  • [10:16 SLT] Danica Linden: new portal will have a very easy way to translate content
  • [10:17 SLT] Danica Linden: it will show you previously translated segments
  • [10:17 SLT] Danica Linden: it will leverage various translation tools
  • [10:17 SLT] Danica Linden: that we are putting together
  • [10:17 SLT] Monalisa Robbiani: I got a question. How will you ensure quality of transaltions? Will there be someone to proof read them?
  • [10:17 SLT] Carduccis Sticky Green: puff puff pass... the air is full of weed smoke
  • [10:17 SLT] Danica Linden: we will have review at first
  • [10:17 SLT] Zai Lynch: the idea behind it was, to store translations on the wiki and then assign one person who is familiar with the jira already who can put them there after the translations are finished. it#s easier to just have to look at a translation page then it is to download a file, correct misstakes, upload it again..... etc
  • [10:18 SLT] Waya Sion: that'd probably be easier for some languages, and more work for others
  • [10:19 SLT] Lexie Linden: Danica..do you think that would be an option? Let a few who are comfortable with pjira be the ones to add the translated text to the subtasks from a users page in wiki?
  • [10:19 SLT] Danica Linden: yeah, I don't see aproblem
  • [10:19 SLT] Lexie Linden: That would mean...well..they still have to have the needed articles available..
  • [10:19 SLT] Danica Linden: if any of you want to take the .txt file, run it trhough Trados or other translation tools, then upload it up to PJIRA, that is fine too
  • [10:20 SLT] Danica Linden: in short, it is up to you where you want to conduct the actual translation or editing
  • [10:20 SLT] Zai Lynch: translation tool o.O
  • [10:20 SLT] Zai Lynch: ooh i see
  • [10:20 SLT] Zai Lynch: not automatted translation....
  • [10:20 SLT] Monalisa Robbiani: tranlsation tools? you mean automated translations?
  • [10:20 SLT] Danica Linden: no, human translation tools
  • [10:21 SLT] Danica Linden: but if you want to first run it through machine translation then edit, that is fine too
  • [10:21 SLT] Lexie Linden: Whatever makes it easier for you
  • [10:21 SLT] Danica Linden: as long as you leverage the SL glossary, you do not disturb the html markings
  • [10:21 SLT] Danica Linden: we are fine
  • [10:21 SLT] Monalisa Robbiani: will there be an expert supervising the whole thing? It seems like everyone thinks they know how to translate. I have seen very bad translations on several third party SL websites.
  • [10:22 SLT] Zai Lynch: so i can take a .txt file from the jira, sandbox it in my wiki space, translate it and reupload it later. is that correct?
  • [10:22 SLT] Lexie Linden: The glossary and style guide are downloadable on the Pjira Community Translation project page..fyi
  • [10:22 SLT] Danica Linden: we will have professional review at the end of the editorial task for every KB article
  • [10:22 SLT] Zai Lynch: *sl wiki space that is
  • [10:22 SLT] Lexie Linden: correct Zai
  • [10:22 SLT] Monalisa Robbiani: good that sounds reasonable
  • [10:22 SLT] Danica Linden: yes, zai
  • [10:22 SLT] Carduccis Sticky Green: puff puff pass... the air is full of weed smoke
  • [10:22 SLT] Zai Lynch: ok =)
  • [10:23 SLT] Lexie Linden: and if you want to set up a wiki page that lists who is available to do the actual pjira actions..you can. Then let me know and I can link it to the project page too
  • [10:23 SLT] Zai Lynch: great =) will bring it up at the meeting on thursday
  • [10:23 SLT] Lexie Linden: Also and other ideas you have please do tell us.
  • [10:23 SLT] Lexie Linden: excellent
  • [10:24 SLT] Carduccis Sticky Green: puff puff pass... the air is full of weed smoke
  • [10:24 SLT] Danica Linden: fguys, just one little request: pls. make sure to follow PJIRA task flow. That way I know where you are with it and can push the KB's through to QA/review and publish
  • [10:24 SLT] Danica Linden: I meant: guys
  • [10:24 SLT] Lexie Linden: right
  • [10:24 SLT] menschling Aabye: mona wo seid ihr den heut *zzz*
  • [10:25 SLT] Lexie Linden: As long as we can keep track of the status..things will run smoothly
  • [10:25 SLT] Lexie Linden: So that is important
  • [10:25 SLT] Lexie Linden: Also remember that you all can check each others translations and edit
  • [10:25 SLT] Lexie Linden: More eyes on one article is a good thing
  • [10:26 SLT] Danica Linden: if youexactly
  • [10:26 SLT] Lexie Linden: : ))
  • [10:26 SLT] Danica Linden: I meant: exactly
  • [10:26 SLT] Lexie Linden: Any other thoughts or questions on the project?
  • [10:26 SLT] Danica Linden: have a moment, please, give that wiki page about this project a read to see what we really need to have this go as smoothly as possible
  • [10:27 SLT] Danica Linden: (if you have a moment)
  • [10:27 SLT] Lexie Linden: oh..when you sign up it may take a couple days to be added to the pjira group. So you wil want to check back to see whn you are in
  • [10:27 SLT] Zai Lynch: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Community_Translation_Project and https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Terms_and_Conditions_for_Second_Life_Community_Translation_Program

  • [10:47 SLT] Jumpman Lane: do the let them play sl in china?
  • [10:47 SLT] Zai Lynch: yeah i spoke to a chinese resident... but had to log in via a proxy server i think
  • [10:47 SLT] Keumjoo Ahn: you can but not go to wikipedia XD
  • [10:47 SLT] Jumpman Lane: hmmmmm
  • [10:47 SLT] Lexie Linden: (one minute..checking something)
  • [10:47 SLT] Zai Lynch: oohh hey keumjoo =)
  • [10:48 SLT] Keumjoo Ahn waves to Zai and grins.
  • [10:49 SLT] Lexie Linden: ok I was wrong..it is German, French, Spanish then Portuguese as far as the number of Linguists go
  • [10:49 SLT] Carduccis Sticky Green: puff puff pass... the air is full of weed smoke
  • [10:49 SLT] Lexie Linden: Then Dutch and Italian
  • [10:49 SLT] Lexie Linden: : ))
  • [10:49 SLT] Lexie Linden: Linguist role is growing and I am really glad to see that
  • [10:49 SLT] Danica Linden: absolutely!
  • [10:49 SLT] JayR Cela: hello everyone :_)
  • [10:49 SLT] Lexie Linden: Hi!
  • [10:50 SLT] GOLAN Eilde: i may join in
  • [10:50 SLT] Zai Lynch: so according to the wiki... japanese language has the most articles (besides english of course). japanese translators been busy =)
  • [10:50 SLT] Danica Linden: hi
  • [10:50 SLT] Jumpman Lane: well its a BIG world :P
  • [10:50 SLT] Lexie Linden: That is great Zai because we do not have many in group who speak Japanese
  • [10:50 SLT] Lexie Linden: A few
  • [10:50 SLT] Keumjoo Ahn will translate one korean wikipage today, yeay
  • [10:50 SLT] Lexie Linden: maybe...9
  • [10:50 SLT] GOLAN Eilde: do u got any in hebrew ?
  • [10:50 SLT] GOLAN Eilde: lol
  • [10:51 SLT] Zai Lynch: i got the impression that asuka neely (who is a mentor too i think) translated it almost on her own...
  • [10:51 SLT] Lexie Linden: wow
  • [10:51 SLT] Danica Linden: impressive
  • [10:51 SLT] Zai Lynch: yuss...
  • [10:51 SLT] Lexie Linden: I only see one for Hebrew
  • [10:52 SLT] Lexie Linden: But I also realize that not all who speak other languages are in the role
  • [10:52 SLT] GOLAN Eilde: no 1 born in israel so no 1 wil do it then ?
  • [10:53 SLT] Lexie Linden: I think as time goes on and SL grows even more...we are going to see alot more languages covered by those in the linguist role
  • [10:53 SLT] Carduccis Sticky Green: puff puff pass... the air is full of weed smoke
  • [10:53 SLT] Rails Bailey: bet u dont cover aussie - sighs
  • [10:54 SLT] Lexie Linden: And like Zai pointed out..many just jump in and do a bunch on the wiki without a role or anything. That is just going to continue and make things better
  • [10:54 SLT] Shadow Pidgeon: you could do that rails
  • [10:54 SLT] Carduccis Sticky Green: puff puff pass... the air is full of weed smoke
  • [10:55 SLT] Lexie Linden: If any of you come up with more localization type ideas or questions feel free to contact me or Danica, use out talk pages on wiki..whatever you like. We really like your feedback and thoughts

  • [10:56 SLT] Doctor Gascoigne: spam spam
  • [10:56 SLT] Zai Lynch: ^^
  • [10:56 SLT] Doctor Gascoigne: ooh wrong group
  • [10:56 SLT] Lexie Linden: lol
  • [10:56 SLT] Waya Sion: though still based on localization but not with the project here's one thought:
  • [10:56 SLT] Waya Sion: not sure how you'd do it and i did run into an issue once with this, but it'd be usefull to have a statement somewhere that states we have no control over content directed at specific languages, global regions, etc. that other residants bring onto the grid.
  • [10:56 SLT] Lexie Linden: I don't think you spam it Zai : )
  • [10:56 SLT] Zai Lynch: (^_^)
  • [10:56 SLT] Danica Linden: yes, thank you in advance

  • [10:57 SLT] Zai Lynch: oh which languages danica? if i may ask...
  • [10:57 SLT] Waya Sion: I ran into someone last week in china, putting most of his frustrations on me cause he's trying to make money in that survey sim and they didn't have servey's for those in China
  • [10:57 SLT] Danica Linden: yes: arabic and serbo-croatian, mainly
  • [10:58 SLT] Zai Lynch: whew... (o.O)

  • [11:00 SLT] Lexie Linden: Jumpman it stays on your record but it "may" not prevent you from volunteering if it was long ago
  • [11:00 SLT] Jumpman Lane: oh coolies
  • [11:00 SLT] Jumpman Lane: i think my ;ast disciplinary action was last month
  • [11:00 SLT] Jumpman Lane: :)
  • [11:00 SLT] Jumpman Lane: and its er more them that it
  • [11:01 SLT] Waya Sion: also just having the "mentor" tag doesn't make one a mentor or not, it's wanting to give others a positive experance that does, and for htat anyone can do it
  • [11:01 SLT] Lexie Linden: right!
  • [11:01 SLT] Lexie Linden: A tag is much less important than the action
  • [11:01 SLT] Shadow Pidgeon: ooops time to run
  • [11:01 SLT] Lexie Linden: SL is full of residents who help and have no tag
