If you are experiencing slow performance in Second Life, the problem may be your antivirus software. We've found that on some systems, Norton AntiVirus can significantly slow down the texture cache system introduced in 1.14.0.

Antivirus software also occasionally misidentifies files in the Second Life cache directories as viruses. Don't be alarmed if you get a virus alert about Second Life. These are almost certainly false positives, and in any case Second Life never actually executes code in the cache, so there is no danger.

To prevent false cache virus alerts and improve texture cache performance, turn off virus scanning for the following directories and add them to the list of ignored (that is, trusted) directories for Norton AntiVirus:

* The Second Life skins directory (C:\Program Files\SecondLife\skins )
* The Second Life cache, which you can find in the '''Network''' tab of the Preferences window in Second Life under '''Disk Cache Location''' (C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\SecondLife\cache)
