Newbie's Experience

Setup

  1. Create a new user account using the usertool or via secondlife.com.
    1. for this test, skip the avatar selection test when signing up via secondlife.com.
    2. for this test, skip the part that gives you some L$.
  2. Ininstall all versions of Second Life to clear all settings and cache files.
  3. Install Second Life.

Log on to the new account.

  • After logging in you should see the Terms of Service Agreement. Accept it.
  • A Critical Messge containing Second Life Community Standards should appear. Click "Continue".
  • You will continue to log in and be asked if you wish to play streaming media.

If you don't press this, more modeless dialogs will pile on top of it. (Then you will hear several "dings" played simultaneously and very loud.)

  • You should see a dialog asking you to choose a gender.

(This dialog has several messages on it)

  1. "Your character will appear in a moment." (This is not true. Your chacter will not appear until you choose a gender.)
  2. "User arrow keys to walk." (you cannot do this until you choose a gender)
  3. "Press the F1 key at any time for help or to learn more about Second Life." (you cannot do this until you choose a gender)
  4. "Please choose the male or female character. You can change your mind later." (perhaps we should ask them to choose their language... can we deal with this on the sign-up page and pass along the preferred language to the viewer?)
  5. "Male" and "Female" buttons.

Meanwhile you will see naked avatars appear where your avatar should be. ie. it looks like MY avatar is naked.

  1. Click one of the buttons to choose a gender.

(my avatar appears, naked for a moment, then dressed) (The "Play Music"/"Disable" modeless dialog is now visible.)

  • Click the "Play Music" button.

(The voiceover is overmodulated. The stream stopped playing after about 30 seconds.)

  • Press the F1 key to open Help, Read thru several pages of online help and verify links/buttons work and are correct.
  • Verify Home takes you to a help index page listing the various help topics available (welcome, basic skills)?
  • Verify the "Back" and "Forward" buttons behave as expected for a browser
  • Check that previously visited links are highlighted in a different color.

( this no longer happens. should it?)

  • Close the help.
  • Click on Help/Message of the Day. Verify that multiple clicks will not bring up multiple copies. (it does)
  • Check the build/sim info is correct from the Help/About SecondLife... Verify that multiple clicks will not bring up multiple copies.
  • Verify that you are in a Orientation Island sim at an appropriate start location.
  • Check your Edit/Preference, they should all have default values. (this should be detailed and tested in some other test)
