For how long are 'historical' names retained?

Bear with me for a moment, I have been around since the days when it was impossible to change one's username — your only choice was to register a new avatar. I understand that Premium users are now (since when?) allowed to change their usernames, and I'm assuming that this function exists mostly to deal with griefers who used a username in the past and are now using something completely different to attempt to evade detection.

My question is just how back in time does this list of 'historical' names goes? Since the dawn of time, i.e., late 2002 or so? Or just since the ability to change usernames became available? Or is there a limit per avatar (e.g. the last three usernames, or all the usernames in the past three years, or something similar)? Having some pointers to either the LL announcements, the community forums and/or some in-world chat with Lindens explaining this functionality would be an awesome addition to this page :)

Thanks in advance!
