Businesses In Second Life

My main focus in Second Life is with my costume store, 'Je Voudrais Costumes', However, I also have two new businesses in the works - 'Fete Party Goods & Decorations' and 'Roux Redhead Art & Accessories'. I intend to bring these together under the banner of the 'Tapis Rouge' group of businesses along with my personal blog under the 'Braise' banner.

If you are good with languages (or French!) you may have noticed that all my business names are French. I started 'Je Voudrais Costumes' some time ago and chose the name simply because it sounded good! When I decided to work on 'Fete' and 'Roux' it seemed logical to stick with the French theme, and I also decided to switch my personal blog to the name 'Braise'. 'Tapis Rouge' completed the theme as an overall group brand.

  • Tapis Rouge (noun; masculine) - red carpet, rolled out in honour of a VIP. See what I did there?! It's both a clever pun on providing 'the red carpet treatment' to my customers and a cheeky nod to the age old question we redheads get asked, "does the carpet match the drapes?!" (The answer to which I'm not going to give on a public Wiki!)

Je Voudrais Costumes Links Je Voudrais (phrase) - I would like. No particular pun there, it just sounds good!

Fete Logo.jpg

Fete Party Goods Links Fete (noun; feminine) - holiday; celebration; fair; festival. All the types of events I intend to create decorations and accessories for!

Roux Redhead Art & Accessories Links Roux (adjective) - red; ginger; auburn hair. In other words 'roux' is essentially French for 'redhead'. As a natural redhead myself it just seemed like a natural progression to start creating things for redheads and their admirers (plus it has come to my attention that redheads are popular in Second Life - I always knew everyone really wants to be a redhead!)

Braise Logo 256.jpg

Braise - My personal blog Braise (noun; feminine) - fire ember. My surname is 'Ember', see?! I really am a genius! :-) My blog contains helpful guides to Second Life, fun inworld finds, general opinion and news on Second Life issues and other random ramblings and slight insanity!

Helping Out!

I really do like to help out where I can. It's a little bit 'hippyish' I know, but I really am all for community spirit and shared knowledge ... man!

I don't always get to offer help as much as I'd like due to everything else I'm doing (as you can see from my details on this page, I tend to give myself loads of work to do!) However, I do as much as I can and, as well as seeing me offer edits and contributions here on the Wiki \ Knowledge Base, you can also often find me answering questions in SL Answers and in the other areas of the forums. If you have a burning question to do with SL I can highly recommend both searching here in the Wiki and asking in SL Answers - there are a great group of people there who love to help!

I am also maintaining a list of excellent help pages and SL guides on my blog. This includes links to official sources, help guides written by other SL residents and my own help guides that I have written. It's not perfect so please mind the mess! It's also not intended to replace any of the official help sources such as the Wiki or SL Answers. It's more a collection of useful links as my own indexing system. I would always recommend looking for help in the official places first, but if my own list of help resources is of any use to others, then that's great too!

As a random aside - I once read a comment from someone in the forums that said "No-one helps for truly altruistic reasons. They help because they expect to get something in return." At first I thought that was utter nonsense. I help because I want to not because I expect anything in return. However, I then realised that I always do get something in return. Something great! I get a huge smile on my face and a sense of satisfaction knowing that I have helped someone find an answer to their problem and that, hopefully, that they will go on to help others too now that they know the answer. I don't care if you think that makes me naive. Community spirit is what makes SL so great and I encourage you all to do your part too! :-)

Having Fun!

Finally, when I have half a second to spare in between all my creating, blogging and helping, I like to have fun too!

I love exploring and shopping in Second Life. Check out the Destination Guide to find cool places, but don't neglect inworld search. There are some great 'hidden gems' not in the Destination Guide.

Chatting and generally being silly with my closest friends is always fun (shout outs in particular go to Elita and Maia!). I'm a wee bit of a traditionalist when it comes to the concept of friends and generally maintain a short friends list of really close people who I could genuinely call friends in 'real life' too. So, if ever you ask to friend me in Second Life, please don't be offended if I decline. It's simply that I don't know you yet. Chat to me and just be yourself - who knows, if you continue to be an amazingly cool person you might one day make it on to my friends list :-) Also, please don't be offended if you ever contact me in Second Life and I don't reply - I'm so crazy busy half the time and forget to go in 'busy mode' and usually miss IM's!

I also have great fun playing around with photography in Second Life and am getting more interesting in my amateur attempts at machinima. As well as photos of my creations on my Flickr page you can also find plenty of self-portrait photos, photos from my explorations inworld and lots of random silliness!

With all that said - I'm not off to do crazy things inworld!

Hope you enjoyed reading my random ramblings!
