This Article is a history of the Second Life Railroad ( SLRR ) on the Heterocera Atoll continent compiled by the Virtual Railway Consortium.

The history of the SLRR is long and growing, so multiple pages are required to present it in appropriate detail:

2005 to 2009

2010

SLRR Growth

In 2010 SLRR improvements continued and new track extensions, junctions, stations, switches, sidings, and passing tracks began popping up all over Heterocera.

VRC Member Cooperation

VRC members are continuously surveying and mapping new SLRR features as they appear, publicizing their availability to the Resident population.

Several VRC members bought land and made swaps with LL to enable:

Expanding SLRR ROW at Pawpaw🖈, adding that station and bridging track. Completing the LL ROW to a large Linden land area in Pyri🖈.

Several Residents began providing fully automated train services on various stretches of the SLRR so Residents could ride and enjoy the scenery without having to buy or even operate any rolling stock.

Hobo Junction🖈 became affiliated with the VRC and began offering a travel Service🖈 with descriptions and LMs

SLRR Wiki Pages

At the start of the year new Wiki pages were set up by Stryker Jenkinsfor the SLRR. Michael Linden confirmed the names for the new and existing branch lines on the SLRR: Branching off the Main Line from Crumbi to Vicina is the Maritime Branch; From Crumbi via Pawpaw to Crenulate is the Mountain Branch; From Pawpaw up the Nothern coast of the Heterocera Atoll is the North Coast Branch.

Clearwing/Paranthrene transfer reconfiguration

In early 2010 Michael Linden began the realignment of SLRR tracks at the border of Clearwing and Paranthrene regions🖈. The transfer station there was slightly relocated and became a line station, with the now-connected tracks passing on either side of the the station. With the addition of active switches, these tracks will provide a passing loop to ease bidirectional travel on the SLRR.

New passing track & siding

In early 2010, a passing track was laid in Triphosa🖈, and a siding in Spangle at the time the branch track was laid.

Resident interconnections

The LL Maintenance group began accepting requests for Resident interconnection🖈 to the SLRR, with connecting track being placed on a case-by-case basis. Actual switching mechanisms will be placed after the final design has been validated.

Signals

The LDPW began building and placing new signals for a signal and switching system under development. Several different designs have been fielded, and are used to set switch routings as well as indicate current status of the switches.

In 2010, several new stations and a railyard were built by the LDPW on existing and new track:

In the first half of 2010, the list of existing Resident-built stations grew with several additions. Some of these unofficial station are:

Railroad crossings

The Mocis crossing🖈, Cisthene crossing🖈 and Oculea crossing🖈 are part of the LDPW signal and switch project in progress. Sylvan Mole is developing a system to operate active structures on the SLRR.

SLRR Rail Group RAIL JAM 2010

On August 15th DOUGIE Flossberg and Damion Goodman of SLRR Rail Group organized RAIL JAM 2010. A lot of members from all over the rail community took part in this great event. Over 45 trains where counted. From a large range of build types. From a horse drawn car to tram cars and from a rail motorcycle to realistic looking steam trains.
The route of RAIL JAM 2010 took the participants from Bhaga Station🖈 where they started at 11:00 AM (PDT) to Calleta "Hobo" Station🖈, where the last train arrived about 90 minutes later.
By that time, 30 trains had made it past Achemon, including 7 without operators aboard. One physical train was observed for certain, Kitto Flora's two-car consist.
Along the line many SL Residents stood and cheered and many a photo was taken. This was a very successful event, and before the event was done a second one for later this year was already in the planning. The event ended with a party with DJ.

Railroad Brown Bag meeting with the community

Michael Linden, from the Linden Department of Public Works, organized a Railway Brown bag meeting to discuss the future of the SLRR and the standards of track, switches and signals. This took place on August 18th 2010. For this a temporary test track was built to show the switches and signals that where produced by Sylvan Mole.
42 railway community members, including a few Moles from the LDPW attended that meeting. And a good, sometimes pointed, discussion was held by the participants.
Installation and completion of the branches without guide rails is expected to be completed in a few months time. This includes the installation of several needed Switches.

More tracks added

By request via support tickets residents have asked LDPW to place a few more passing tracks along the SLRR lines. Some were installed by Michael Linden at the beginning of September 2010. On the Tussock railyard some additional track was setup for a shunting track and extended into Hooktip alongside route 3.
