I have a parcel of group-owned land and I want to let a trusted friend help me return objects. How do I do this?

KBnote.png Note: This is an example which is specific enough to be practical, yet can be applied more broadly for other group abilities.

This tutorial assumes:

  1. You (Resident A) are an owner of this group, or have abilities close to an owner. (Certain steps will be grayed out if you don't have the right abilities).
  2. You've already created a group.
  3. You've already deeded a parcel of land to this group.
  4. Your friend (Resident B) is inworld, preferably on the same parcel you are, and ready to accept your group invitation.

As a precursor, within a group, you can have several roles, each with its own set for abilities. This system works similarly to structures you may have seen on other software, and while it can be confusing at first due to its granularity, this also gives you a great deal of flexibility once you know how.

  1. Move your avatar to your parcel.
  2. Select World menu > Place Profile > About Land to confirm you're on the right parcel. In the General tab, the Owner should be (Group Owned). If not, you'll need to deed the parcel first.
  3. Once that's confirmed, click the People sidebar tab, then click the My Groups tab.
    • (Unfortunately, you can't simply click the group name in the About Land window as you might expect.)
  4. Hover your cursor over the right group, then click the View profile (right arrow) button on the right. The group profile now fills the tab.
  5. Scroll down and click the Roles tab.
  6. Click the Roles tab.
  7. Click the New Role button.
  8. Give the new role a specific Role Name (like "Cleanup Crew"). Filling in Role Title and Role Description are optional. You can change any of these in the future.
  9. Scroll down some more — the important part we're looking for has the header Allowed Abilities. These are the "powers" a group member in a specific role can have, and they're separated into sections represented by folder icons. (You can't re-sort them, though.) It looks complicated because there's a scrollbar within a scrollbar.
  10. Scroll down within Allowed Abilities, and under the Parcel Content "folder", check the following:
    • Return objects owned by group
    • Return objects set to group
    • Return non-group objects
(You can of course be more selective once you know more about what you're doing, but for this example, this role gives someone else the ability to return every kind of object on a parcel.)
  11. At the bottom right of the sidebar, click Save. Give it a moment and Save should gray out to indicate that these changes you've made to the role have definitely been saved.

Now that you've made this role, it's time for you to invite your friend to the group.

  1. In the group sidebar, scroll up under the Roles section and click the Members tab.
  2. Click the Invite button to open the Group Invitation window. Then, click Open Resident Chooser to open the Choose Resident window.
  3. Type the friend's name as instructed, or if they're actually on your friends list, click the Friends tab and select them from there.
  4. Click your friend's name to highlight it, then click Select button at the bottom of the window.
  5. In the Choose Resident window, click the Close button.
  6. Back in the Group Invitation window, under Choose what Role to assign them to, click the dropdown menu and choose the new role you created above.
  7. Click Send Invitations.

Joining the group

Instructions here are given to your friend's perspective.

  1. If you're logged in (Resident B), you now see a notification asking you to join the group.
    • If you're not logged in, the next time, you'll see a notification in the bottom-right of your Viewer window.
  2. You must click Join, and shortly after, you should be notified "You have been added to the group".
  3. Now, right-click an object that isn't needed on the parcel, and select Remove > Return from the context menu. You should be able to return objects as expected.
