In this section, you will find the local market press mood and key highlights. For a comprehensive listing of press stories, please visit:

Summary:

This week, the UK team saw a great segment on BBC Click, featuring fantastic interviews with Mark, highlighting the future of Second Life and virtual worlds, including discussion of the positive IBM case study. In the US, the team also saw a nice feature in Federal Computer Week, which includes four articles on using government uses of virtual worlds. We also secured a piece in the San Francisco Chronicle on virtual law, which turned out to be a good and well-presented article.

Also this week, we announced the winners of the Linden Prize, finalizing and pitching the release in the US, with coverage in Massively, Virtual Worlds News and Second Life Update so far. The European teams have been continuing their pitching efforts around the AO announcement, with Japan issuing and pitching the news this week. Coverage has remained neutral to positive across markets, with only a few negative pieces internationally.

The teams are beginning to prepare for Nebraska, proposing potential event dates and meeting with Amanda next week to begin planning for the launch.

UK

Mood: Positive

  • BBC Click program aired both in the US and in the UK, and is a very forward-looking, positive and comprehensive look at virtual worlds. The feature includes both in-person and inworld interviews with Mark, providing an overview of: the virtual worlds market, integration of virtual worlds with the Web, the inworld economy and virtual goods market and how Second Life is working with IBM to enable cross-virtual platform integration. An online article summarizing the main issues followed the broadcast.
  • There have been 13 pieces of UK coverage of the AO announcement. Following a more negative BBC blog piece when the announcement was first made, several other gaming titles have covered the news in a more neutral tone, merely stating the facts of the announcement rather than speculating on the future of Second Life.
  • Elsewhere, VNUnet included an article on Intel’s predictions of technologies they expect to become mainstream within the next decade, and have named ‘integration between virtual worlds,’ such as Second Life, as one to watch.
