Second Life has some unique laws of physics. A general piece of advice that dates back far back is:

If you sit on an object, you can't be pushed.

Why would you not want to be pushed? Pushing with various weapons, or one avatar ramming into another, can be very disruptive to your experience, since you can get thrown far away from your original position (also known as "being orbited"). It's also possibly a violation of the Community Standards.

While you may know land parcels can have No Pushing turned on (World > About Land > Options), this doesn't stop certain behaviors which appear to be pushing (in the technical sense of llPushObject), but are not. For example, a cage that entraps your avatar, and by using physics collisions, forces you upwards. Nevertheless, it's still annoying.

The simplest way to sit is on the ground. Right-click the terrain and select Sit Here.

Note: Being pushed while you're sitting on the ground can still have some unexpected effects, so you should always try to sit on a non-physical object if possible. You can also stop pushing by sitting on a object, but some special conditions apply:

  • Physical objects are affected by gravity and can be pushed around.
  • Temporary objects stay rezzed until either you stand up, the owner deletes it, or it gets returned.
  • Phantom objects become non-phantom for as long as you're sitting there. However, phantom objects can be difficult to sit on, unless they have "sit targets" assigned to them by an LSL script.

These options are found in the Object tab of the Tools window.

For these reasons, sitting on a vehicle -- since it's meant to be in motion -- is probably not a good idea. Neither are some other types of scripted objects subject to change.

If you get fired upon while sitting on an object, your avatar remains seated, and you can continue to ignore your would-be attackers (View > Mute List can block their chat), or file an Abuse Report if they don't stop. Even during momentary waves of sandbox rowdiness, sitting on an object can save you a lot of trouble.

You can also make your own prim (primitive object) to sit on:

  1. Right-click the ground and select Create to rez a prim.
  2. Right-click the prim and Sit Here.
  3. When you're ready to move around again, click Stand Up near the bottom of the Second Life window.
