If your avatar is suddenly and unexpectedly turned all black, here are some steps you can attempt in order to try to restore your normal color:

  • Go to Preferences > Graphics > Custom and make sure the Hardware Skinning box is unchecked.
  • If you are using Second Life on a secondary monitor, move it to your primary monitor, log out, and log back in. You may need to "rebake" your avatar's textures:
  • ** Go to Advanced > Character > Rebake Textures
    • If you do not have an Advanced menu, you can activate it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+D. See this article for more details on opening the Advanced menu.
  • If you are using an ATI video card, you may need to reset your Catalyst drivers. For information on how to use your Catalyst software, please visit ATI's website.
