[15:04] Charlette Proto: hiya
[15:04] Jacek Antonelli: Hi Charlette
[15:04] Armin Weatherwax: Hi Charlette
[15:05] Charlette Proto: any topic ideas?
[15:06] Armin Weatherwax: the same topic as every night ... try to take over the viewer?
[15:06] Jacek Antonelli: Today we are talking about Avatars United and the upcoming forum upgrades
[15:06] Jacek Antonelli: hehe Armin
[15:06] Charlette Proto: Avatars United?
[15:06] Armin Weatherwax: scnr
[15:06] Charlette Proto: no idea here
[15:06] Charlette Proto: was that a joke
[15:06] Armin Weatherwax: is rainbow linden joining?
[15:07] Charlette Proto: sorry I'm slow
[15:07] Jacek Antonelli: Charlette: https://lists.secondlife.com/pipermail/sl-ux/2010-February/000364.html
[15:07] Charlette Proto: I had a thought which isn't the most obvious user need, tell you about it later
[15:08] Charlette Proto: OMG I had a blog post (2) THAT TURNED INTO FLAME WARS
[15:09] Charlette Proto: shit sorry caps
[15:09] Armin Weatherwax: THAT TURNED INTO FLAME WARS is good for caps
[15:09] Charlette Proto: haha it is
[15:10] Charlette Proto: when I read M say 'intuitive' I puke
[15:10] Jacek Antonelli: Maybe the snowglobe meeting will go an hour late and I can just sleep the whole time
[15:10] Armin Weatherwax: lol
[15:10] Charlette Proto: even worse when he says 'more intuitive'
[15:11] Jacek Antonelli: Hey Geneko
[15:11] Geneko Nemeth: Sorry, aib tlagging...
[15:11] Charlette Proto: ni Gen
[15:11] Armin Weatherwax: Hi Geneko
[15:12] Geneko Nemeth: And they are still going about nobody-knows-what...
[15:12] Charlette Proto: perhaps I'm just loosing it (feeling) for SL, but all these bull Lindens gobble up these days makes me snigger
[15:12] Jacek Antonelli: By the way Armin, I tried the Snowglobe code last night, it worked great on Linux32 and Mac. Rezzing seems way faster now :D
[15:12] Armin Weatherwax: \o/ ©
[15:13] Charlette Proto: Jacek you rebased Imp into Snow
[15:13] Charlette Proto: that would be good news
[15:13] Armin Weatherwax: i spent 2 1/2 hrs at ahern today and 3 in lbsa plaza yesterday, without crash
[15:13] Jacek Antonelli: Not exactly. Armin ported part of SG
[15:13] Charlette Proto: ah
[15:13] Jacek Antonelli: So Imprudence will have the same fast loading as Snowglobe
[15:14] Armin Weatherwax: yeah, sadly i left out the map
[15:14] Charlette Proto: armin I expect 20 hours plus, but I know what ahern is like
[15:14] Charlette Proto: the HTTP texture stuff?
[15:14] Geneko Nemeth: No, it's still UDP-based.
[15:14] Jacek Antonelli: Hi lufpleh, welcome
[15:15] lufpleh Obstreperous: Hi all
[15:15] Armin Weatherwax: you are right, charlette, but after 2 1/2 i wasnt in the mood to listen to kirstenlee anymore
[15:15] Charlette Proto: the Snow map is UDP Gen?
[15:15] Geneko Nemeth: I mean the texture fetch in general.
[15:15] Jacek Antonelli: haha Armin
[15:15] Armin Weatherwax: no really
[15:15] Charlette Proto: haha agree, 2 hours of Ahern is a sick stomach anyway
[15:16] Charlette Proto: yeah Gen, but the map is HTTP I thought
[15:16] Geneko Nemeth: Yeah, but that map won't work on OpenSim.
[15:16] Jacek Antonelli: Hi Mm
[15:16] Mm Alder: hello
[15:17] Armin Weatherwax: Hi MM :)
[15:17] Jacek Antonelli: Okay, I guess we had better start. I'm not sure how much longer Merov will keep going
[15:17] Geneko Nemeth: Merov wants to stop,
[15:17] Geneko Nemeth: but they don't let him.
[15:17] lufpleh Obstreperous: he just logged off
[15:17] Armin Weatherwax: and hi lufpleh
[15:17] lufpleh Obstreperous: or he was goign to rather
[15:17] Geneko Nemeth: Nyahahahaha.
[15:17] lufpleh Obstreperous: hi Armin
[15:18] Geneko Nemeth: ... and can somebody tell me why there's an Aimee Linden at today's meeting?
[15:19] lufpleh Obstreperous: lol
[15:19] Jacek Antonelli: Okay, so. Today we're talking about Avatars United and the upcoming SL forum upgrades. If you haven't seen the blog posts already, take a look: https://lists.secondlife.com/pipermail/sl-ux/2010-February/000364.html
[15:19] Jacek Antonelli: Have any of you tried out Avatars United already?
[15:20] lufpleh Obstreperous: yup
[15:20] Mm Alder: I haven't tried AU. Does it work in the viewer or not?
[15:20] Geneko Nemeth: This is just Facebook for Second Life, right? No thanks.
[15:20] Jacek Antonelli: I don't think so. It's just a website, I think.
[15:20] Charlette Proto: what is AU in short - an avie facebook?
[15:20] Charlette Proto: same feeling Gen
[15:21] Jacek Antonelli: Geneko: And other MMOs. WoW, EVE, etc. Although I'm not sure if that will last now that LL has acquired them.
[15:21] Charlette Proto: we must be getting inbread here at UXIG
[15:21] Charlette Proto: well if LL owns it it is Second Life™
[15:21] Armin Weatherwax: not yet. should I (I'm here to find out)
[15:21] Jacek Antonelli: What's your impression of AU, lufpleh?
[15:21] Armin Weatherwax: ?
[15:21] lufpleh Obstreperous: M Linden has expressley said they want to continue it being a multi platform site
[15:21] lufpleh Obstreperous: its freaking useless
[15:22] Charlette Proto: sure M is about as in touch with SN and Viral Networking as a banker on Twitter
[15:22] Geneko Nemeth: Even if it's meant to be used with other virtual worlds, the fact that LL owns it would mean it will be somewhat biased towards SL. Mostly for the people who join I guess.
[15:22] Armin Weatherwax: so I can register there Armin Lin... no thats silly
[15:22] Charlette Proto: not just biased, skewed full tilt
[15:22] Mm Alder: Does it have any redeeming qualities, lufpleh?
[15:22] lufpleh Obstreperous: at the moment there are 40k + avatars on it, WoW makes up 20K + of them
[15:23] Geneko Nemeth: I thought WoW already had the Armory?
[15:23] lufpleh Obstreperous: today there were about 5.6k SL accounts
[15:23] lufpleh Obstreperous: last week it was somewhere down in the hundreds of SL accounts
[15:24] lufpleh Obstreperous: cant tell hhow many are dead/dormant accounts
[15:24] Charlette Proto: so what is the point? besides the facebook analogy
[15:24] lufpleh Obstreperous: it looks like a pretty dead site
[15:24] Geneko Nemeth: I think that's precisely the point...
[15:24] lufpleh Obstreperous: well SL users are scattered all over social media
[15:25] Jacek Antonelli: True.
[15:25] lufpleh Obstreperous: from Twitter, Facebook, Plurk, Friendster, Flicker
[15:25] lufpleh Obstreperous: maybe hte ide is to bring them together as a community
[15:25] Charlette Proto: I actually would prefer (and do) to use facebook, it provides the best bridge out of Second Life™ to RL
[15:25] lufpleh Obstreperous: FB maybe has nice itnerface
[15:26] Mm Alder: The blog said something about group management. Any idea how that would happen?
[15:26] Jacek Antonelli: Although apparently Facebook doesn't want avatars, and is kicking any they find.
[15:26] Charlette Proto: don't see the point in making the avatar based distinction
[15:26] lufpleh Obstreperous: but many SL users wiould scream at links due to privacy
[15:26] lufpleh Obstreperous: FB has had several ciulls of SL accounts
[15:26] Charlette Proto: really, mine is an avatar page and registered name is Charlette Proto
[15:26] lufpleh Obstreperous: its part of FB ToS you must use RL identity
[15:27] Charlette Proto: haha didn't read it
[15:27] Mm Alder: makes it esier for the child molesters?
[15:27] lufpleh Obstreperous: from what I seen of Avatar United, looked like a site that was semi dead
[15:27] Charlette Proto: all want to molest Char after seeing the pictures
[15:28] lufpleh Obstreperous: if LL can bring everyone together on AU
[15:28] lufpleh Obstreperous: it makes a good portal/advertising/promotional site
[15:28] Charlette Proto: well the top link on AU didn't work for me just then
[15:28] Mm Alder: Isn't the whole point of SL to bring people together?
[15:29] lufpleh Obstreperous: as fro Groups, would be a lot easier to establish/maintain groups on a web site like a forum
[15:29] Charlette Proto: create profiles (learn more) went to a blank page
[15:29] lufpleh Obstreperous: if you can access the site from within SL you stillhave the immersion
[15:30] Charlette Proto: I think the forums and blogs LL runs should be the outworld portal for Second Life™ avs
[15:30] Mm Alder: Are there and plans to integrate it into SL?
[15:30] Charlette Proto: this way you can link to existing stuff easier (web UI)
[15:30] Mm Alder: *any*
[15:30] lufpleh Obstreperous: we only speculating
[15:30] lufpleh Obstreperous: or I am anyways
[15:30] Charlette Proto: I've been asked a few times by users if there is any way (besides moving focus away from viewer) to reduce the load on the PC, but still use comms etc - any thoughts???
[15:31] Geneko Nemeth: Framerate cap?
[15:31] Charlette Proto: the separate comms windows in UI would obviously be a good move, but low FPS rendering may be a good thought
[15:32] Charlette Proto: yup
[15:32] Mm Alder: The low fps would affect the appearance of typing as well.
[15:32] Charlette Proto: give it less CPU, conserve the load and energy, but see the world as is (slow)
[15:33] Charlette Proto: yeah, but 3D rendering could be throttled separately
[15:33] Charlette Proto: like a low FPS postcard with emphases on comms side of things
[15:34] Mm Alder: But then, if you're only chatting, do you care about the load on the PC?
[15:34] Jacek Antonelli: Hrm. Well, high loads will drain laptop batteries faster.
[15:34] Charlette Proto: some people want to run it multitasking and low spec machines eg notebook on battery would last longer
[15:35] Charlette Proto: yup
[15:35] Mm Alder is anchored to a desktop
[15:35] lufpleh Obstreperous: LL have to think about the whole fututre of computing being low power & mobile
[15:35] Charlette Proto: I tried a small window, not much change and comms very compromised
[15:36] Armin Weatherwax: i wouldnt mind having a chat client with about 1/60 fps
[15:36] Charlette Proto: yeah a phone comms app like Ajax plus slow 3D would be nice
[15:36] Jacek Antonelli: There is SLim (if anyone remembers that, heh). But that doesn't have any 3D view at all, and no way to move around.
[15:37] Charlette Proto: precisely Armin, especially when you want to be in two places or like we said low load is prfered
[15:37] Charlette Proto: Slim had no 3D
[15:37] Charlette Proto: it is essential to see the world I think
[15:37] Jacek Antonelli: Yeah.
[15:37] Charlette Proto: this is why Ajax is of no use really
[15:38] Jacek Antonelli: Let's transition and talk about the forum upgrades for a while. https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/community/blog/2010/02/01/upgrading-the-forums
[15:38] Geneko Nemeth: Catch 22 then. You can't have your world and not draw it at all.
[15:38] Charlette Proto: 1 FPS would still give you a feeling of being there
[15:38] Geneko Nemeth: Let's just render everyone as impostors
[15:38] Geneko Nemeth: And make the world a 2-d side scrolling then!
[15:38] Armin Weatherwax: slim had some other flaws. when i read the eula i decided not to install it since the only thing i really understood was that i'm only allowed to install it if i understand the eula
[15:38] Jacek Antonelli: Like AU, the forums are a way for SL residents to communicate with each other outside of SL.
[15:39] lufpleh Obstreperous: dont see what the fuss is about the forums, its a transition/upgrade
[15:39] Charlette Proto: ah forums? why are blogs just another forum when it comes to web UI etc (comments)
[15:39] Geneko Nemeth: Well, some residents want to post some topics and not just reply to them.
[15:39] Charlette Proto: I thought they can Gen
[15:40] Geneko Nemeth: Then there's even less reason to maintain two systems at once.
[15:40] Charlette Proto: Lexi Linden emailed me to say I should post forum threads instead of blogs, so I thought it was open to residents
[15:41] Geneko Nemeth: So I don't see anything special about moving forums.
[15:41] Jacek Antonelli: The old forums had some issues, both from the user's standpoint and LL's standpoint of maintaining it. But I think many users are not very pleased with the new software.
[15:41] Charlette Proto: but never strted a forum yet, will try now (not quite this minute)
[15:42] Armin Weatherwax: well, the only forum i read regulary was the linux client testers forum and that is almost dead since december 2008
[15:43] Charlette Proto: looking at the Forums link Lexie gave me
[15:44] Charlette Proto: looks like a duplication of blogs
[15:45] Charlette Proto: even same topics
[15:45] Jacek Antonelli: I'm reading to see whether the old forum posts will be moved over to the new forums. The impression I have is that the old forums will be archived, but not moved over.
[15:45] lufpleh Obstreperous: does seem odd to me LL are doing both AU and new forums
[15:46] lufpleh Obstreperous: archieved is what I heard
[15:46] lufpleh Obstreperous: similar topics in new forum, but fewer
[15:47] lufpleh Obstreperous: remove some of the spread/dead wood
[15:47] Jacek Antonelli: Yeah, apparently it won't have as many different forums sections as the old forums
[15:47] Charlette Proto: is adding a new system going to help? I'm not sure it is a good move
[15:47] Jacek Antonelli: More "focused" is the word.
[15:48] lufpleh Obstreperous: from reading the post I got the impression LL being trying to do stuff/improve the old forms and being hampered by the provider
[15:48] Geneko Nemeth: Well, it came together as a package with the blogs, so why not use it?
[15:49] Jacek Antonelli: Hrm. From the comments on this blog post, it looks like users are concerned that the new software is harder to use. And that the search feature is much less useful.
[15:49] Jacek Antonelli: Among other things.
[15:49] Charlette Proto: search and LL is always a nono
[15:50] Geneko Nemeth: That is true. The new blog is confusing.
[15:50] Jacek Antonelli: But, hopefully these issues can be resolved over time, if this new software is as extensible as LL believes.
[15:50] Charlette Proto: haha but once you have URLs what can be organised
[15:51] lufpleh Obstreperous: i joke din another chat about the blog, on AU each user can host his own groups and forums, thats why they bought AU, so they dont have to bother listening to residents or maintaing forums, the users can sort themselves out
[15:51] Charlette Proto: the structure (hierarchy) should be in place before you allow for posts, but maybe the number based URLs can copeanyway
[15:51] Jacek Antonelli: Are the forums on AU any better than this new software, lufpleh?
[15:52] Geneko Nemeth: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/community/support/blog/2010/02/01/calling-all-support-blog-readers#comment-773866
[15:52] lufpleh Obstreperous: nothing I seen on AU is good
[15:52] Armin Weatherwax: even the crappiest forum and blog software can be accepted as long as the content is good
[15:52] Geneko Nemeth: A resi's lament on Clearspace...
[15:52] lufpleh Obstreperous: I would say no
[15:53] Charlette Proto: to me it sounds like a big mess again
[15:53] lufpleh Obstreperous: me agrees with Charlette
[15:53] Charlette Proto: can't LL deploy a webpage any more
[15:53] lufpleh Obstreperous: to me it looks like an impulse buy
[15:53] lufpleh Obstreperous: when you get a close look at AU it is pretty tatty
[15:54] Charlette Proto: honestly I may be getting tired of LL, but they seem to be going down feet first
[15:54] lufpleh Obstreperous: on the up side AU has a lot of potential!! lol
[15:55] Charlette Proto: if AU is not a runaway success (I never heard of it till today) then it a waste of effort trying to integrate it
[15:55] lufpleh Obstreperous: I think its part of the grand plan to attract/retain new users
[15:55] Charlette Proto: blogs, forums, wiki, AU, how many branches can you have
[15:56] Mm Alder: See Charlette, you already forgot the virtual world itself.
[15:56] Charlette Proto: yeah new users, but our word of mouth and good will is the best way to grow Second Life™ population, not free download for people with no idea
[15:57] Geneko Nemeth: I disagree, there's only so fast you can grow a community by word-of-mouth.
[15:57] Charlette Proto: yes MM, maybe two days online is enough to forget the whole thing was a meeting place
[15:57] Mm Alder: Well SL got another mention on PBS TV this week.
[15:58] Charlette Proto: but Gen, noobs without a clue are just a waste of account space and av names
[15:58] lufpleh Obstreperous: not if they are a rich noob happy to spend RL $
[15:58] Charlette Proto: well TV hype has always worked for LL, mentioned millionaires and sex bed scandal i suppose
[15:59] Mm Alder: actually it was quite favorable. interviewed Phillip Linden
[15:59] Charlette Proto: as ususal
[15:59] Charlette Proto: seen him tell the bullshit many times, always the same
[15:59] lufpleh Obstreperous: thought it was very positive about virtual worlds being a definite of the future
[16:00] Geneko Nemeth smirks
[16:00] Charlette Proto: once I did some figures based on the $ he talked about - total crap
[16:00] Mm Alder: http://video.pbs.org/video/1402987791/
[16:00] Geneko Nemeth: My professor also says that virtual world is the way of the future.
[16:00] Charlette Proto: thanks MM
[16:00] lufpleh Obstreperous: the empty IBM building was a little spooky
[16:01] lufpleh Obstreperous: if IBM offices are emptying now how long before other business follow suit
[16:02] Charlette Proto: 86 minutes, I'll look later haha
[16:02] Jacek Antonelli: I think IBM is moving behind their own firewall
[16:02] Charlette Proto: Real Life™ business in SL simply doesn't work - get griefed and freak
[16:02] Mm Alder: Charlette, you can go directly to the Chapters in the video. Nice Ui there. :-)
[16:03] Charlette Proto: yeah Mm it looks neat and functional
[16:04] Azwaldo Villota: Thank you for the link, Mm.
[16:04] Azwaldo Villota: Howdy Jacek, greetings all. Regarding FPS and lag and such, can can anyone recommend a wiki article or blog post about the Statistics Bar (and how to use it)? Have looked at the SL Wiki page, hoping that someone has addressed this in a more thorough sort of guide.
[16:04] Azwaldo Villota: *SL Wiki Statistics Bar page
[16:05] Mm Alder: Which is the Statistics Bar?
[16:05] Azwaldo Villota: I am often asked about sim performance, lag, etc. I always send them to you guys.
[16:05] Geneko Nemeth: The thing I always open when I use SL.
[16:05] Geneko Nemeth: ( I got a lot of freezes and slowdowns...)
[16:05] Charlette Proto: Statistics bar is great (lots of subsection can be opened) but UI is a bit crude
[16:05] Azwaldo Villota: View > Statistics Bar
[16:06] Geneko Nemeth: It wasn't meant for public consumption, but everyone used it anyway, so it got moved out of the Advanced menu.
[16:06] Charlette Proto: actually the Imprudence Stats bar has a few more problems (persistance of opions used)
[16:08] Charlette Proto: one more thing on the main topic, why couldn't the menu Help include blogs and forums (content dropdowns)
[16:08] Mm Alder: The blog is on the Help menu.
[16:09] Jacek Antonelli: Do you mean Imprudence or SL, Charlette?
[16:09] Charlette Proto: perhaps a feed of live data from web is unrealistic in a menu, but top of hiererchy should be easy
[16:09] Charlette Proto: both
[16:09] Charlette Proto: even custom ones eg Imp threads in Imp help menu
[16:09] Charlette Proto: it would make sense next to JIRA
[16:10] Jacek Antonelli: You'd like a list of blog/forum posts in the help menu, like from RSS?
[16:10] Mm Alder: Linden used to do links to blog posts on the login page
[16:10] Charlette Proto: instead of "Bug Reporting" make a WEB menu and include blogs etc
[16:10] Charlette Proto: yeah I miss the links on the login page
[16:11] Charlette Proto: especially the current info
[16:11] Azwaldo Villota: How about giving the user X open slots to assign web URLs, like having Favorites/Bookmarks in a browser?
[16:11] Charlette Proto: precisely Azwaldo
[16:11] Jacek Antonelli: Interesting ideas
[16:11] Charlette Proto: but it isn't dynamic at runtime
[16:12] Charlette Proto: xml gets parsed once if I'm not wrong
[16:13] Charlette Proto: viewer 2 will have some SLUR bookmarks I think
[16:13] Mm Alder: You can create menus on the fly.
[16:13] Charlette Proto: ah than there is a good chance Mm
[16:14] Mm Alder: and dynamic lists are easy
[16:14] Charlette Proto: one could just use a hosted page for each viewer live
[16:15] Jacek Antonelli: Okay, let's wrap it up for this week, I think. Any final remarks about AU/forums?
[16:16] Geneko Nemeth: Zzzzz
[16:16] Charlette Proto: make the UI point to a URL and new/current content could improve the outworld aspect of Second Life™ viewer
[16:16] Jacek Antonelli: hehe
[16:16] Charlette Proto: a mess Jacek
[16:16] Mm Alder: I want LL to do something impressive. :-(
[16:16] Geneko Nemeth: I'd rather talk about my coursework which could use a bit of help.
[16:16] Charlette Proto: haha Gen
[16:16] Geneko Nemeth: I'm serious.
[16:16] Mm Alder: too much time in-world Gen?
[16:17] Geneko Nemeth: I'll be designing some kind of UI,
[16:17] Geneko Nemeth: I want to do the SL build interface, of course,
[16:17] Geneko Nemeth: but I'm afraid LL might have already done it.
[16:17] Charlette Proto: shame about the viewer 2 silence
[16:18] Jacek Antonelli: Hrm. Want to talk about it next week, Geneko?
[16:18] Geneko Nemeth: (Failing that I would also like to redesign imprudenceviewer.org *smirks*
[16:18] Mm Alder: LL has really raised expectations by their silence. :-)
[16:18] Charlette Proto: really getting on my nerves being in the dark for so long
[16:18] Azwaldo Villota: By "designing some kind of UI" do you mean a viewer, Gen?
[16:18] Geneko Nemeth: THat will be too late, it's almost due by then.
[16:18] Geneko Nemeth: No, any kind of UI, including games, desktop apps, mobile apps, websites.
[16:19] Mm Alder: Do you have to build it?
[16:19] Azwaldo Villota: Still no expected date for Viewer2, right?
[16:19] Geneko Nemeth: Nah, I think a prototype should be fine.
[16:19] Geneko Nemeth: Viewer2 RC should come out in Feburary.
[16:19] Charlette Proto: some work on the Imp wiki would be good
[16:19] Charlette Proto: haha Gen
[16:20] Armin Weatherwax: SLIM was announced several months before it came - and disappeared silently :P
[16:20] Geneko Nemeth: I don't think resturcturing the wiki would be inside the interface design domain, although it's still work needs to be done...
[16:20] Charlette Proto: it is Feb and I've heard this many times, but still interested in case it happened this time
[16:20] Geneko Nemeth: It's okay, it's all Aimee Linden's fault!
[16:20] Geneko Nemeth giggles
[16:20] Jacek Antonelli: heh
[16:20] Mm Alder: You mean viewer 2009 will be out this month?
[16:20] Geneko Nemeth: (seriously, that was her nametag...)
[16:21] Charlette Proto: Gen, UI on web is the best example of UI work one can have, especially when you take mobile viewers on
[16:21] Charlette Proto: haha Mm
[16:21] Jacek Antonelli: Okay, let's adjourn. Take care everyone, see you next week. :)
[16:21] Mm Alder: Geneki, did you not know that Aimee is now a Linden?
[16:21] Armin Weatherwax: take care jacek :)
[16:21] Geneko Nemeth: No I did not know (until two hours earlier).
[16:21] Geneko Nemeth: Charlette, not everything has to relate to metaverse.
[16:21] Charlette Proto: byee everyone, I'll watch the doco now
[16:22] Geneko Nemeth: I think mobile viewer is something... unlikely
[16:22] Armin Weatherwax: nini everybody
[16:22] Mm Alder: bye all
[16:22] Geneko Nemeth: Unless Khronos actually got OpenGL into browsers.
[16:22] Azwaldo Villota: Thanks Jacek
[16:22] lufpleh Obstreperous: cya Jacek, thx for hosting
[16:22] Charlette Proto: byee everyone
[16:22] Armin Weatherwax: bye
