Your cache serves the purpose to store textures, information about inventory items, the friends list and other assets for quick access.

It is possible that a corrupted cache can lead to problems inworld, such as missing inventory, wrongly displayed clothes and others.

How to Clear Cache

The cache can be cleared by going to Edit > Preferences (or pressing Ctrl-P), accessing the Network tab and pressing the Clear Cache button. The viewer will let you know that a restart is required to complete this action. Close your Second Life viewer (Ctrl-Q) and start it again. On start-up, your cache will be cleared. This may take some time, depending on how much space you granted your viewer to use for caching. After logging in, your surrounding might load slower and your inventory will show that it is just fetching items. Have some patience so the viewer can cache the information again.

How to clear Group Cache

You can clear the group cache seperatly without the need for a relog. This is particularly useful when you'd like to fetch a fresh import of a groups memberlist.

Group Cache can be cleared by accessing the advanced menu (might need to activate it with Ctrl-Alt-⇧ Shift-D) and selecting Clear Group Cache. Make sure to close and re-open the group window, so the effect can take place.

Rebake Textures

In order to display your avatar's clothes and bodyparts inworld, your graphics card takes all the textures of these and bakes them to one[1] texture, which is then sent to the sim and distributed to the other agents around you. It is possible that an error occurs somewhere in the process, resulting in your avatar beeing displayed incorrectly (not just to you, but to everyone). It is possible that a texture rebake solves this problem. You can do so by opening Advanced > Character and clicking Rebake Textures (or Ctrl-Alt-R).

Still Problems?

Even rebaking won't solve the problem in case your graphics card driver has an incompatibiltiy with the Second Life software. Search the issue tracker for known problems or file a support ticket in the Support Portal in case you're experiencing ongoing problems.

Be sure to include all needed information in the support ticket! E.g.:

  • Which version of the Second Life Viewer are you using?
  • Which graphics card and which graphics card driver?
  • Which operating system?
  • Complete description of the error you're experiencing, when it happened and what you already tried to fix it.

The clearer your explanation, the bigger the chance that someone can help you out.

  1. Actually the card bakes 3 textures. Face, upper and lower body.
