As the list of editors grows, a marker of some kind next to commercial editors would be useful.  I checked some Wikipedia entries and other sources, but haven't seen any common marker yet.  Is there some standard, or could we just add a dollar sign ($) after some names?  Something more international would be nice.

Cleaning up

Going to clean up this page as theres tons of no longer used or maintained products here. Added a feature table... What i see is a smaller compact list of editors withe their own wiki pages so its less cluttered. Dimentox Travanti 04:48, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

commercial indicator

As the list of editors grows, a marker of some kind next to commercial editors would be useful. I checked some Wikipedia entries and other sources, but haven't seen any common marker yet. Is there some standard, or could we just add a dollar sign ($) after some names? Something more international would be nice. --Adam Marker (02:23, 2 March 2007)

I agree, but it is rather USA-specific. Fennec Wind 21:24, 6 March 2007 (PST)

That was nagging at me. Couldn't think of a good solution. Strife Onizuka 22:53, 6 March 2007 (PST)

I finally found the symbol that was lurking in the back of my brain, the generic currency symbol, ¤, "used to denote a currency when the symbol for a particular currency is unavailable" (Currency (typography). If no one says otherwise, I may give it a try. --Adam Marker 23:47, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

While the $ symbol might stand for the currency of the USA, it's widely recognized even outside the U.S. (due to various media channels) as a symbol for "money" in general.
I would guess there is a very small minority who knows about the currency symbol ¤. So although it might be the right symbol, I think it's unintuitive for most readers. Those who are living in other countries might use other symbols (€, ¥,...) on the localized version of this page.
In this case, I'd be afraid that (political) correctness (¤) would be to the discontent of most readers.
Maybe we could use L$ ? ^_^

Is ¤ better or worse than the current commercial symbol? "C" was only reasonable because it has a popup description of "commercial software", which we'd use with ¤ too. L$ (while a real currency) doesn't fit real world software prices, and $ was long ago rejected. --Adam Marker 01:01, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

I would favour ¤ over C while I would like $ better than either of the two others.
In the end, the symbol shouldn't represent a currency used to buy the software, but it should represent money in general. So we're not searching a currency but a money symbol or icon.
I don't want to give the impression I'd be stubborn with this. I'm just brainstorming. You can use either symbol or an asterisk * or a footnote as long as its described well in the article.
Maybe we can even use an intuitive looking icon instead of a character. Something released under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 like this for example. Just made a quick google search... Dunno if there's something better out there which fits the conditions.
