Every Second Life item has a set of permissions that determines what you can and can't do with it. In some circumstances, permissions can be altered: for example, if you originally rezzed a prim, you have the right to set permissions however you like. In many cases, permissions come as-is, and understanding them is key to knowing how to get the most out of items you buy.

KBtip2.png Tip: "Item" and "object" are different: "item" refers to any asset in your inventory, including clothes, textures, and objects; an "object" is a specific item type made of one or more prims. Since only objects can be rezzed as-is inworld, some of of the following only apply to objects, including those containing other items.

You can view an item's permissions from various places in the Viewer, usually:

While most of these controls are common, some are only available for inworld objects:

General

Name

  The object's name.
Description

  The object's brief description. While optional, this field can referenced by LSL scripts and inspectors.
Creator

  The Resident who created this object. Click the name to view the Resident's inspector. Can't ever be changed.
Owner

  The Resident who owns this object. If it's in your inventory, that's you. Click the name to view the Resident's inspector.
Acquired

  The date you received the object in your inventory, whether you bought, took, or were given it. Not applicable for inworld objects.

You can

You either own the item, or have been granted permission to edit it.

Modify

  You can make changes to the item. Renaming a texture, changing a cube object into a sphere, or retinting a shirt are all examples of modifications.
Copy

  You can make unlimited copies of the item.
Transfer

  Historically also referred to as "Resell/Give away" because you can sell or give the item to other Residents. If an object has Copy and Transfer enabled, you can distribute unlimited copies and always retain a copy.

Anyone

These permissions are unchecked by default.

Move

  Allows anyone to move the object inworld by right-clicking it and dragging the positioning arrows.
Copy

  Allows anyone to copy the object from inworld by right-clicking it and choosing Take Copy. All of the items in the object's contents must also allow anyone to copy for the parent object to be copied. It may be easier to set an object For Sale for L$0.

Group

Group

  The group to which this object is set. If you can modify this object, you can set its group to any of your groups by clicking .


Share

  Shares control of the object with its active group when rezzed inworld. It retains its owner, but other group members may modify it as their group abilities allow.
Deed

  Transfers ownership of the object to its currently active group. Group-owned objects treat an entire group as their owner for the purposes of land-based permissions and Linden dollar payments. An object must first be Shared with the group before it can be deeded.


Next owner

What the next person you give an item to can do.

Modify

  The next owner can make changes to the item.
Copy

  The next owner can make copies of the item.
Transfer

  The next owner can give the item or its copies to other Residents.

For Sale

For Sale

  Another Resident can buy this object when it's rezzed inworld. You can't make an object for sale if it's no-transfer. After setting a price, choose one of three sales modes.
Price: L$

  The item's price in Linden dollars. Setting price to 0 allows it to be "bought" for free.
Copy

  An exact copy is automatically sent to another Resident's inventory after purchase. The original stays inworld.
Original

  The inworld original changes ownership to another Resident upon purchase. Once they take it, it disappears from inworld. Also useful for transferring objects that need to be moved but not taken into inventory.
Contents

  A folder containing the object's contents is sent to another Resident's inventory after purchase. This is the preferred choice of delivering outfits and other multi-item packages without having to open a box.

Others

Click to

  Click actions are useful for making object interaction easier with a single left-click. For example, on a chair with Sit enabled, instead of having to right-click and Sit, a single left click seats your avatar.
  • Touch (default) - Nothing happens unless the object is scripted to respond to a click (touch).
  • Sit on object - Same action as right-clicking the object and choosing Sit Here. If the object has a sit script with a custom position, pose, and so on, that gets used instead.
  • Buy object - Same action as right-clicking the object and choosing Buy.
  • Pay object - Same action as right-clicking the object and choosing Pay. Only works if the object uses a pay script.
  • Open - Same action as right-clicking the object and choosing Open. Makes boxes easier to unpack. Only works with objects that have contents, since those are what get unpacked.
Show in search

  Makes this object findable in Second Life's search tool. May take a day or two to appear after being checked.

Caveats

KBwarning.png Warning: Be extremely careful when setting permissions on an item you create; copies can't recalled even though you're the original creator.
  • Permissions are restrictive: if you create a shirt, make it no-copy, and give it to a friend, if they give it back to you, it will still be no-copy and you can't make it copyable. (You can change the "original" you have.)
  • When an object with contents is in your inventory, it displays a simplified set of permissions. For example, you can't see whether multiple creators were involved. To fully view an object with nested permissions, you must rez it inworld, then examine contents.
