The unit of currency for all monetary transactions in Second Life. Linden Dollars are a "Wikipedia logo"microcurrency and can be traded for "Wikipedia logo"real world currencies (e.g., USD, EUR, GBP, JPY...) on the official LindeX currency exchange.

Its official currency symbol is L$ (and appears as such on the top of the viewer, when displaying the money in the current account).

Several people commonly abbreviate Linden Dollar colloquially to "lindens" (sometimes spelled as "lindons" for some reason) — even here on the SL Wiki. Depending on the context, Lindens can also mean the employees of Linden Lab (especially those whose avatars are often in-world), a potential source of confusion. As such, it's better to either use the full name or the unambiguous "L$" symbol when referring to Linden Dollars.

Note

The current iteration of the Second Life Terms and Conditions of service (retrieved on September 2024), on its point 3.3, explicitly forbids any other form of acquiring L$ and/or converting them to fiat currency. Unless these Terms and Conditions change, please avoid any transactions 'outside' the only approved currency exchange; otherwise, you risk suspension of your account(s).
